Pardon my lack of religious knowledge but i have read from differnet sources that Prophet (saw) prayed 3 times only in times of travel and during war. Therefore praying 3 times apart from these instances is not justified not allowed.

yes it is true. I read in a couple of papers (online) about this. He was a minister who converted to Islam 2-3 years back kept it secret but only now accepted it openly after the whole minaret issue became huge. He has resigned from his position if i remember correctly.
