Re: What is the purpose of religion?

@ Ghulam Muhammed I enjoyed reading your post---it added depth to the discussion. @Humsafar, Al Zulfiqar...... If I understand correctly, there are 2 major points of concern, 1) that people are incapable of understanding the depth of wisdom in religions, 2) that religion has outlived its usefulness....

@aarif.......your other questions... -Why is there diversity? Those who have the intellectual capacity to understand, have the responsibility to share with others--thus, they are a teacher of another, who is a student. In order for a teacher to be able to teach, there needs to be a student---one who...

Can the concept of free-will and accountability be independent of religion? On a limited scope---Yes, it can be independent of religion, in that our concept of "law and Justice" also incorporates the idea that we choose to follow or not follow the "law" and therefore are accountable for our actions....

suicide bombers--heroes or villains?

The way you imagine someone engaged in a suicide attack depends, not surprisingly, on which end of the attack you happen to be on -- in cultural, if not literal terms. In American films and pop culture, there were few acts more inexplicable or malevolent in the years of my childhood than those of Ja...

The books of Judaism also have "foreign words" whose origins are debatable---for example "Metatron" is the name of an angel that appears in the Talmud (Mishna/Gemarra) and there is speculation as to where this word originated from.

I agree with the interpretation about "orphans/wives". Since the prophet married widows---many of them war widows, (except Aisha)--One could say---technically, he may have married according to the interpretation of "orphan" as per Quran? However, more disturbing is why did the others such as "Imams"...
