1962 to 1972 - Ten Years that wrecked the Character & Mentality of Bohras
The Civilized, Self-respected and Upright, Dawoodi Bohras
turned in to Brute, Boot-licking, and Spineless
50th Dawoodi Bohra Dai, Sayedna Abdullah Badruddin Sahib prepared and sign the Nass document in favour of his eldest son, Tayyeb Bhai Sahib as he was critically ill. But Tayyeb Bhai Saheb Sahib dies a mysterious death on 10th Safar 1333 (23th December 1914). A month after Tayyeb Bhaisahib Zainuddin's death, Abdullah Badruddin Sahib died on 10th Rabiul Awwal 1333 (24th January 1915). Immediately his second son, Taher Baisaheb Saifuddin assumed the office of Dai. Sayedna Taher Saifuddin was intelligent, cunning, over-ambitious, scheming and ruthless. Immediately after assuming the office of Dai he left the dilapidated old devri, in Zanpa Bazar, Surat and came down to Bombay, the commercial capital of India. On one side he projected his image as exclusively great religious and divine personality by stage-managing meetings with world-dignitaries and by acquiring hounorary titles and degrees, on the other side he parted with traditional simplicity, God-fearing and honest life and started a life of extreme luxury. Soon he turned in to a filthy materialist, robbing community's trust funds and properties. The Dawoodi Bohra Community was on the right path of Islam when prosperity had not come in the community. But around early 19th century due to Government tenders and contracts to honest and hardworking Dawoodi Bohras during first and second world wars wealth and prosperity came in the community. The credit must be given to 48th Dai Sayedna Abdul Husain Hushamuddin that he persuaded newly-rich Bohras to construct masjids and rest-houses (Musafarkhanas) at various centers of pilgrimage for Bohras. The most properties of the community were built or establish and they were on 99 years lease which were due to expire somewhere in 1950s or 1960s. Sayedna Taher Saifuddin set his eyes on these properties and floated various temporary trusts in his own name, such as Dawat-e-Hadiyah Trustee, Saifee Foundation Trust etc. He made his family members trustees in these newly formed trusts and he became the Sole-Trustee of these Trustee with absolute powers. Having done this Taher Saifuddin now let loose his religious mafia gang to pressurized the original honest trustees to declare Mullaji Saheb as sole trustees of their trusts and properties and Then Taher Saifuddin compelled the original trustees to resign so that his own family members and his stogies can become the trustees in their place. Having done this Taher Saifuddin ordered the new trustees (his family members) to take the fresh lease directly in favour of the newly-formed secular trusts through misrepresentations and by gaining favour of various government officials through corrupt practices. This was in order to wipe out the original religious and charitable objects of these trusts and also to acquire total control over these properties. In order to establish his supremacy, Taher Saifuddin who was called Mullaji Saheb in the initial period of his Dai-ship soon started addressing himself as Dai-ul-Mutlaq, Sultanul-Bawahir, Shamud-Duatul-Mutlaqeen, Naib-e-Imam, Ilahul-Ard (God on earth), Owner of soul, body, mind and properties of his followers, Divine and Spiritual personality and All-knowing, and infallible, and above all supreme authority to allot choicest accommodation in the heaven to his loyalists.
As for as Dai was concerned Sayedna Taher Saifuddin Saheb raised himself to the level of God, but as for as Bohras were concerned he lowered them down to the level of bonded slaves.
After becoming Dai the first thing he did that he altered the text of Misaq. He introduced "Dai" with Imam and imposed the Misaq for Dai as most essential part of Dawoodi Bohra Faith, though Misaq Imam and had remained a customary practice. He also made the condition harsher in the Misaq such as:-
"You shall accept the orders of Dai in all things. You shall love him/her whom the Dai loves. You shall be enemy to him/her against whom the Dai is hostile.
You shall war against him/her against whom the Dai makes war."
These inhuman conditions made Dawoodi Bohras absolute slaves of Sayedna. The peace-loving community became hatred monger, violent and revengeful. The civilized Bohras became uncivilized and brute who went up to the extent that at the instigation of Sayedna Taher Saifuddin, they exhumed the dead body of Sir Adamji Peerbhoy's daughter-in-law from her grave, removed its shroud and threw the naked on the footpath, they burnt Abbas Aurangabadi alive in brought day light, student violently attacked their senior teacher, they enjoyed stoning the dead bodies and torturing their own blood relations. This act was one of the biggest sin committed by Sayedna Taher Saifuddin.
He further invented a lethal weapon "Jamat Kharij" to install permanent fear in the minds of the Bohras.
Even then few courageous and upright Bohras kept on challenging him for his wrongdoings. But the verdic of Supreme Court on 10th January 1962, declaring excommunication purely on religious ground invalid, was a shot in arm for Sayedna Taher Saifuddin. After celebrating "great victory" (Fateh Mubeen) he most vigorously worked usurping the community's funds and properties and further suppressed the community.
He also introduced the system of "Raza" and snatched away all the freedom from the Bohras. Now Bohras were required to seek Dai's or his Amil's Raza for naming a child, performing Aquiqa, Nikah, burial, majlis, ziyarat, social functions, opening a shop, establishing charitable institution, school, college, even namaz, hajj, niyaz-e-Husain and reciting marsiyah/nohas etc.
Fortunately he lived just four more there after. But he insured that his large family live in utmost luxury in palaces and are known as Shahzadas and Shahzadis.
His son and 52nd. Dai, Sayedna Mohammad Burhanuddin Saheb ruled the community on his father's footsteps till the mass-revolt in Udaipur in 1972. Then in order to prevent the community from the influence of the Bohra Youth reform movement he further imposed the dress-code and e-Jamaat cards. All these innovations forced on the community especially from 1962 t0 1972, for the sake of absolute control over the community by Dai and his family, wrecked the character & mentality of Bohras and turned the civilized, self-respected and upright, Dawoodi Bohras in to brute, boot-licking, and spineless.
