Why are NRI and oveseas Bohras so subservient to religious ties with subcontinent.

The one and only free public forum for Bohras. The focus of this forum is the reform movement, the Dawoodi Bohra faith and, of course, the corrupt priesthood. But the discussion is in no way restricted to the Bohras alone.

Excuse me but SMS is no longer exciting news.

Let us discuss more controversial issues. Expand and 1st and second generation migrants from India and Pakistan left the subcontinent over 30 years ago. Why are we still so subservient to religious and cultural directives from India.

They may have talent amd numbers but their social issues or advise are inapplicable in our local environment such as West, Africa or Asia.

What would happen if we stopped relying on Mumbai, Surat and Karachi ?

Br Oz
Bohras are sub servient to Religion from India because the seat of Bohra Hierarchy is India (both the so called Dais) Just as Catholics around the world are sub servient to Vatican. We can say the same for Hindus in West who still follow some of their Gurus.
The question why educated Bohras in West are still blinded by corruption and nepotism in their practices of religion.. Most important why NRI in West are still afraid of their children's marriage and their own burial. In West where freedom of Speech and Religion is guaranteed and no one can do Social boycott, why are they still afraid
Hopefully after FGM cases, more Bohras will become liberated and start asking question of the corrupt clergy.

Bro SBM , As other enlightened Muslim communities have found their own spiritual centres of excellence, enlightened Bohras need to find their own sources.

India no longer has monopoly of culture and spirituality. They may have numbers and we may have natural connections with extended family but thats where it stops.

I find it amusing Abdes in West are taught roti making, keeping streets clean, water hygiene etc. I hope you get my point. Teaching children a surti dielect , dress kids in kurta ijar. Really that shows how low and shortsighted the kothar is. Those cultural items may be ok for streets of Karachi or Mumbai but not San Francisco or Paris

Recently I heard they were poisoning minds by saying dragon fruit, rocket and some spices were harm.

Even application of sharia is misaligned. FGM is a classic case. Interest same thing if people in the west realised their whole governments rely on interest including supply of water through the pipes is based on leased assets and debt. SMS would not even be able to drink a drop if he was strict.

In conclusion we have so many options in West and stop importing these Mulla Amils and priests from India.

That is NOT going to happen in Bohra community.
Among Muslim Community that trend has started, Zaytuna College which is run by Sk Hamza Yusuf and other notable scholars has started graduating resident Scholars who are now hired by many local Masaajids. These are western trained Islamic Scholars who not only learn theology, but PR, and other life sciences.

There is an identity crisis in such communities. So they ally with the one that is at hand howsoever broken it may be and start practising it with renewed zeal as the options they are confronted with are :
  • Unreligious kids which are not at all subservient to them.
Religious kids which are die hard abdes but still keep them at home.
These people are caught between a rock and a hard place. Other than the money and the glam status thats not much to their life.
