syedna Hatim.

The one and only free public forum for Bohras. The focus of this forum is the reform movement, the Dawoodi Bohra faith and, of course, the corrupt priesthood. But the discussion is in no way restricted to the Bohras alone.

Sayedna Hatim, the 3rd Dai, was the son of 2nd Dai Sayedna Ibrahim bin Hasan al-Hamidee. He became Dai al-Mutlaq in 557 H, and reigned for almost 39 years dying in 596 H. He is buried at Hutaib in the Yemeni province of Haraaz. Hutaib is an important ziyarat site for Bohras. Institution of Darees is dedicated to him.

(The first Dai, Zoeb bin Musa, was appointed in 532 H, the 2nd in 546 H.)

His mazoon was Ali ibn Husain and mukasir, Muhammad ibn Taher.

Sayedna Hatim, like his predecessor Dais, had to defend his position continually in armed conflict with Zaidi warlords who also had their strongholds in Yemen. He was ensconced in a fort called Hisn al-Kokaban near Sanaa and, with support of the local Hamdani tribe, was able to thwart attacks by the Zaidis as well as by the Ayyubid Sultan of Sanaa.

He, like his father, the 2nd Dai, was both a warrior and accomplished intellectual and spiritual leader. He was a prolific writer and published over twenty books which are still being studied in Bohra Universities.

The more famous of his books are Tanbeeh al-Ghafileen and Tuhfat al-Quloob.

A controversial report attributed to Sayedna Hatim concerns the succession dispute between Ismailies and Ithna-asharis over Imam Ismail. Sayedna Hatim stated that Ali ibn Abi Talib had prophesied that Ismail, on whom nass would be proclaimed, would die during his father’s, Imam Jafar al-Sadiq’s, lifetime. Imam Jafar, being aware of this, made sure that a successor to Ismail was also designated during his lifetime. The successor was Ismail’s son, Muhammad bin Ismail.
Those of you who have seen the movie al-Nebras on Youtube will recall two incidents from the movie when Ali prophesied martyrdom for two converts to Islam.

In the first instance a Jew accepted Islam just before the battle of Khaybar. The Jew asked Ali if Allah would reward him with paradise. Ali told him that, even better, he would get a gift of martyrdom and told his army to bid their final welfare to him.

In the second instance, before the battle of Siffin, Ali pointed out a location of a secret well which according to a Christian prophecy, only a true heir of a Prophet could have known. A Christian who witnessed the episode converted to Islam and Ali again prophesied martyrdom for him.

I mention these episodes to underline the Shia belief that Ali was also blessed with the gift of prophecy, just like other members of Ahl-e-bayt. That is why Sayedna Hatim was not shy about mentioning Ali's name in relation to Imam Ismail.
