Adamji preebhoy

The one and only free public forum for Bohras. The focus of this forum is the reform movement, the Dawoodi Bohra faith and, of course, the corrupt priesthood. But the discussion is in no way restricted to the Bohras alone.

THIS IS AN ARTICLE BY MR.SAIFUDIN INSAF ON THE PRESENT CONDITION OF 'SIR ADAMJI PEERBHOY'S FAMILY WHICH IS TOTALLY OPPOSITE OF WHAT THE KOTHAR SAYS AND PROPOGATES ;-

Only Allah is All-Knower and Aimighty. Not even a Prophet, Imam or Dai. They are all mortal beings. Since I am a part of the reform movement I try to know the truth visa-vis Kothar's propaganda.

The members of Sir Adamji Peerbhoy family whom I know personally:-
That Allah has ruined the sons of Adamji Peerbhoy as they dared to oppose 51st Dai, Sayedna Taher Saifuddin, this propaganda is false and mischievous and to mislead the community. How can Allah who is merciful and compassionate and who has sent Qur’an with the sole purpose of radical restructuring the existing society free of injustices, exploitation and oppression, ever be against those persons who have fought against the oppressive and unjust policies of Sayedna Taher Saifuddin?

I can say this because I have personally met many members of the Peerbhoy family. I have found them quite rich, wealth-wise and property-wise even today.

I have seen their various bungalows and business establishments in India in places like Dhoraji, Matheran, Neral, Breach Candy, Gamdevi, Lohar Chawl and Churchgate. I have also met few members in Canada and USA. I have not gone to Pakistan where some of the Peerbhoy family members live in Karachi and Haiderabad.

Some of them are known as “Peerbhoy”, “Bootwalas” and “Merchant”.

I had also had the privilege of meeting Sir Adamji’s last surviving son, Mohammad Peerbhoy. He had come from Karachi and was staying with Adamji P. Peerbhoy, charter accountant at Forjett Street in Bombay.

And last two surviving daughters Rehmat bai Jani, wife of Jafar bhai Jani and Fatima bai Hathiari. They both used to stay in ‘Shanta Niketan” at Gamdevi, Bombay. Rehmat bai Jani’s son Mansoor Jani fought the famous “Sir Adamji Peerbhoy Sanatorium Case” along with Advocate Abid Merchant for more then 30 years with their own expenses which was more than a crore and half rupees, against powerful Sayedna’s establishment which wanted to demolish it and construct a commercial complex on its land. The entire credit for the huge commercial hospital that we see today in the name of “Saifee Hospital” and retaining Sir Adamji's sanatorium and his grave in the compound of the sanatorium goes to these two well-wishers of the community and humanity.

Rehmat bai Jani owns Sir Adamji’s Charlotte Bungalow at Matheran, a huge hardware shop in the name of “Jivaji Esaji Hardware Mart” in Lohar Chawl Bombay and various other properties in Neral, Kalina, Kurla.

Her daughter Mehfooza is running a charitable institute at Worli Bombay in the name of “Baap noo Ghar” and Mehfooza Bahen’s husband Saifuddin Haideri owns a Aluminum Factory and they stay in the posh area of Breach Candy at Bombay.

Akhtar P. Peerbhoy has a charter accountant firm at Marine lines Bombay and he runs a scholarship trust for college students in the name of “Chhaberia Caritable Trust" besides managing “Sir Adamji Peerbhoy Rafiuddin Yatimkhana” at Dharol.

Mustafa P. Peerbhoy owns a big store in the fort area in Bombay in the name of “Munnu’s Jeens”.

Husain Abdul Husain Peerbhoy owns two hotels, Green Hill and Wayfare at Matheran besides running a school in Neral in the name of “Sir Adamji Peerbhoy English School”.

Likewise Ishaq Haveliwala family (Owners of “Orient Apparels” at Churchgate Bombay), Zarina Hathiari, Lukmanji Bootwala family (London, Canada), Akber Abdul Husain Peerbhoy (owner of Khatija lodge at Matheran), Arif P. Peerbhoy (Owner of a charter accountant firm), Adamji Peerbhoy (Babu bhai), Hatim Merchant family (Owns a legal firm), Mohammad Ali Merchant (Lawyer), Gulam Husain Bootwala family etc are various other members of the Sir’s family.

Since the members of the Peerbhoy family have remained quite well-off since beginning there was no reason for any one of them to go back to Sayedna’s fold.

The family members in Bombay have their own Graveyard known as “Peerbhoy Kabrastan" adjacent to Bohra Naryalwadi Kabrastan

Sir Adamjee Peerbhai concentrated on the welfare work both for his own community and for general public. The amount he had spent in 19th Century must be multiplied several times to get the figure at today’s value as in those days Rs. 5 to 10 used to be the monthly income for an average decent family.

1) He distributed under his own supervision food grains worth Rs 4 lakh in 1877 among the draught affected people of Kathiwar.
2) He was illiterate but he established 27 schools and he used to spend Rs 12000 to 13000 annually to run these schools.
3) He built Rabat (rest houses) at Karbala, Mecca and Madina and he used to spend annually Rs 13000 to provide free food and the facilities to the Bohra pilgrims.
4) He built a huge sanatorium along with a mosque at the Charni Road Bombay in 1885 at the cost of Rs 3.5 lakhs. This sanatorium served as a rest house for sick persons and pilgrims for several years. He also used to run a school for Bohra orphans and a dispensary for immediate medical help here.
5) Thousands of people were affected by a devastating fire in 1886 at Burhanpur. He spent Rs 60,000 on the relief work.
6) In 1885 he started an orphanage in Kathiyawar for the Bohras on which he used to spend Rs 30,000 to 35,000 annually.
7) There was an acute draught situation in Yemen and he donated 2000 pound sterling for the relief of the affected Bohras.
8) There was again a draught in Gujarat in the year 1897 and he sent relief material worth Rs 1 lakh.
9) He also built a hospital for medical treatment of the children spending Rs 4 lakhs.
10) He donated Rs 5 lakh to establish Prince of Wails Science Institute at Alighar University.
Development of Matheran in Bombay and running a mini train there was his achievement.

It is important to note here that he paid for all these charities and development from his own hard-earned money and never collected a single paisa from the community. Sir Adamji Peerbhoy’s honesty, integrity and hard work were highly valued by the government officers.

In recognition of his splendid social welfare work he was amply awarded and recognised:

1) Title of Justice of Peace (J.P.)
2) He was made first Sheriff of Bombay in 1897.
3) The 49th Dai, Sayedna Mohammed Burhanuddin conferred title of `Rafiuddin’ on him.
4) In 1900 he was honoured by the title of `Qaisare-Hind'.
5) In 1907 he was made a knight and given the title of `Sir’ by the British Government.
6) Though an illiterate, Sir Adamji was honoured by Mohammedan Educational Conference to be its first president.

He died on 11th August 1913. The Times of India on his death wrote in a front-page editorial on 13th August 1913: “His wealth was made entirely by his own energy and persevering enterprise. He started life next to none. But as he accumulated the earnest of a hard life he showed in a marked degree that trait, which is fortunately characteristic of the modern Indian Capitalist, of generosity in devoting a portion of it to the amelioration of the lot of his fellow men … Moslems will remember him for his benefactions to their communal interests and all India is indebted to him for the splendid contribution which he made for the prosecution of scientific study at Aligarh. Government marked publicly their sense of his worth when they recommended him for Knighthood and now that he is gone we may think of him as a faithful citizen whose example it behooves his successors to emulate.”

The over ambitious and scheming Sayedna Taher Saifuddin right from beginning had started amassing wealth by hook or crook and built his own financial empire. Sir Adamji’s sons were well educated and emulated their father in public and charitable activities. Therefore Sayedna Taher Saifuddin did not take very kindly to Sir Adamji's sons activities as Sir Adamji’s and his son’s philanthropic activities far exceeded his. With Chandabhoy Galla case the Sayedna considered them as his rivals and tried to defame and alienate Sir Adamji Peerbhoy’s name. First he caught hold of ‘Peerbhoy Palace’ at Malabar Hills Bombay and converted it into Saifee Mahal, then Bohra Rabats at Karbala, Mecca and Medina, then Matheran and now Sir Adamji Peerbhoy Sanatorium, on which is now built “Saifee Hospital” on Sir Adamji Peerbhoy Sanatorium Trust’s land.

its a sad thing that instead of making peerbhoy a hero of community, kothar is busy trying to bury his name....
but he will remain hero no matter how hard kothar try to vanish his efforts.

Salutes to this great personality.....

I have heard about Sir Adamjee Peerbhoy and his philanthropy. Just one word for him 'Respect'. Such a personality should be made a role model for anyone. I doubt if the new generation bohras even know him.

dear all,
if Sir adamjee peerbhoy had not given all his possessions to the wicked dynasty the story would have been entirely different. foundation was built by Sir in good intent but what happened? His own children fought a loosing battle.the so called saifee mahal was once owned by Sir adamjee but in future the entire plotting against his family was done from there.
there are so many others to name like mr. jabirbhoy from kapadwanj who suffered the same atrocities. since they were all pioneers they stood against them.
so i kindly request the forum members to list out in detail the names and atrocities committed to many such people so that the world can know

Life Sketch of Sir Adamji Peerbhoy
By A. A. JASDENWALA

The nobleman, Adamji was born in the year 1846, at Dhoraji, in Kathiawar. His parents were comparatively poor. They were not able to give young Adamji more than an elementary education. He was, however, naturally endowed with strong commercial proclivities, so he induced his parents to settle in Bombay, where he began to trade on his own account at the age of 17 years. He then succeeded in securing small Government contracts, which he carried out so satisfactorily that the officers under whom he worked spontaneously testified to his ability and honesty. By 1867 he was executing important contracts for the Bombay Arsenal. In 1870, he obtained a contract for the supply of army camp equipage. At this time Fatehghar and Jubalpore had the monopoly in this trade. The contract was carried out by Mr. Adamji though there were no regular tent-makers of reputation then in Bombay. There was also a deep rooted and prejudice against tents made in Bombay. Mr. Adamjee, overcame all these obstacles and succeeded in tent-making trade. His tents were appreciated by the Army. In the Egyptian campaign of 1884, two-thirds of the tents used were manufactured by him. His tents were also used in the Afghan wars of 1879 and 1880 and in all the subsequent frontier expeditions, always giving unqualified satisfaction.
In December, 1878, when Sir Richard Temple, Governor of Bombay, applied for Maltese carts, Mr. Adamjee undertook to supply 500 carts in twenty days from the date of order, and a further supply of 400 soon afterwards, making in all 900. He delivered the whole 900.
Whatever the urgency, Mr. Adamjee never spared himself or his money to carry out his undertakings.
The above facts were prominently brought to the notice of the local Government by the Inspector-General of Ordnance at Bombay, Major General A. A. Bayley, R.A.-- who recommended Mr Adamjee for some Government honour. The Bombay Government endorsed this recommendation and forwarded the correspondence to the Government of India, but no practical outcome ensued in the matter owing to Mr. Adamjee modestly declining the proposed honour. He simply went on in his own quiet plodding way, now and again eliciting praise and expressions of satisfaction from the officers.
He also added to his usefulness to the community by estabilishing a tannery in the suburbs, Dharavi of Bombay, taning immense quantities of hides in the latest and most scientific fashion and producing leather of a quality unequalled anywhere else in India. To this tannery he added harness, saddlery and boot manufacturing departments, and produced them large scale. Boots and shoes were supplied by him to a considerable number of the troops employed in various expeditions. The authority pronounced them the best and most serviceable.
Heads of departments repeatedly brought to the notice of the Government of India the meritorious services rendered by Mr. Adamjee Peerbhoy during emergencies, and he has been as often thanked by the Government of India and the local Government.
The following remarks were put on record by General A. Walker, R.A., Director-General of Ordnance in Calcutta, India, in his memorandum to the Government of India on January 28, 1897: "Mr. Adamjee Peerbhoy is the best ordinance contractor on the Bombay side of India. His enterprise and resources are exhibited in the excellent leather he produces by manufacture in his own tannery in Bombay for the Madras and Bombay Arsenals. I would recommend experts, Government officials and others, to visit his workshops and see the push of the man. He is far and away the most advanced ordance contractor in India. The man has much grit in him. He is liberal and honest in his dealings as a contractor and he would do well in peace and war alike. It does one good to come across such a man and have dealings with him."
Until about a year or two ago, Mr. Adamjee was known to the general public only as a large employer of labor, an enterprising manufacturer and merchant, and an eminently successful Government contractor. But he has applied a large portion of his wealth with which he has been blessed for pious purposes. Some of which may here be referred to:
Some twenty years ago, he visited the sacred city of Kerbella, in Asiatic Turkey. There he personally experienced the hardships endured by Indian pilgrims, through want of shelter from the heat of a burning sun, from scarcity of provisions and water, and the chronic state of insecurity to life and property. He remedied this state of affairs at an annual outlay of Rs. 4,500 by erecting substantial rest houses (Bohra Rubats) and keeping agents on the spot who are charged with the duty of assisting his community members during their stay, gratuitously supplying them with food and shelter and seeing to the protection of their lives and property.
Again on his visit to Mecca he found a deplorable condition there. He made provision on a still larger scale than at Kerbella, for the necessities of his countrymen during their sojourn.
He also, at a cost of more then a lakh of rupees, erected in his native town (Dhoraji) a Public Market, a Museum, and Rest Houses (Musafirkhanas), for which the inhabitants are most grateful.
During the famines of 1977, 1888, 1891 and 1897 he sent his agents to Kathiawar with money, grain and colthes for distribution among the poor of his community in that province and thereby saved the lives of many thousands who, but for this timely and substantial aid, must have perished.
Some 120 Mussulmans having been improperly convicted by a Brahmin Magistrate in Malegaon, in Khandesh during communal clash there. Mr. Adamjee engaged Mr. Budruddin Tayabjee (the Honorable Mr. Justice Budruddin Tayabjee) and several solicitors and pleaders, at a cost of about Rs.33,000 to appeal against the sentences. The result was that all the prisoners were acquitted by the Sessions Judge.
About 5000 Bohras in Yemen were in great straits owing to the famine prevailed there. Mr. Adamjee sent his agents to their assistance, with provisions for alleviating their sufferings and enabling them to tide over their difficulties.
In 1894 a fire destroyed the village of Kookshi Barvani in Central India rendering homeless and involving in utter ruin about 500 Bohra families. Mr. Adamjee sent agents to assist these persons to rebuild their houses and to help them overcome the disaster.
In 1881, knowing the educational difficulties of Bohra youths in Kathiawar Mr. Adamjee established and handsomely endowed with 27 schools in different parts of the province, where poor girls and boys could be gratuitously taught, and about 20,000 boys and 3000 girls have already passed through these institutions.
In 1886 he erected at a cost of Rs. 3,25,000 a Sanitorium for the use of his community at Charni Road, Bombay. The building is 575 feet long and is "pucca" built, in three blocks and is capable of comfortably accommodating 25 families. It contains a beautiful mosque, situated at the southern end. There is also a charitable dispensary in the sanatorium. In the first block about 140 orphan Bohra boys are gratuitously boarded, lodged, clothed and taught to read the Koran, with its meanings in Gujarati, and to study Arabic literature of a high class, as well as Islamic history and theology. Arrangements are also provided for teaching architectural drawing and English to the advanced students, so that the institution supplies both educational and religious requirements. Many of the boys who passed out of this institution are now filling responsible and highly paid appointments in Bombay, Calcutta, Madras, Colombo, Rangoon, Zanzibar and other places. Mr. Adamjee naturally takes a particular interest in these boys. He has already applied about 6,00,000 rupees to the purposes of this schools and for the general benefit of the boys educated therein.
In 1897 a fire occurred at Burhanpur in the Central Provinces burning nearly 6,000 houses, and causing Bohras to suffer heavily. He inaugurated a fund for their relief, and the splendid donation of 60,000 rupees was distributed amongst them. He also aided the sufferers by subscribing to the general fund for the relief of the helpless poor whose houses had been burnt, for which the Chief Commissioner of the Central Provinces, in The Government Gazette, No. 5240 dated Nagpur, 11th June, 1897, conveyed his special thanks to Mr. Adamjee.
During the plague epidemics of 1896, 1897 and 1898 many thousands of panic-stricken Bohras were unabled to leave Bombay for their native places. Mr. Adamjee paid their railway fares and provided funds for the purchase of food on the road. He also set apart a portion of his palatial Charni Road sanatorium as a plague hospital for Bohra sufferers and employed, at his own expense, a large staff of doctors, both male and female, as well as a number of native Hakims. He placed another portion of the sanatorium at the disposal of the patients' relatives, to whom all the necessities of life were freely dispensed, so long as the patients remained under treatment. This was the only plague hospital which afforded these privileges, and the only one which was wholly maintained at the cost of a single individual.
Mr. Adamjee has also spent large sums on diverse charitable institutions and in scholarships for the encouragement of learning.
Mr. Adamjee's charities for Bohras for the alleviation of suffering and the improvement of the condition of Bohras are remarkable. But his charities were not confined to his community, as many other classes including Europeans have had cause to remember his munificent benefactions.
It will, no doubt, cause some astonishment when it is stated that the amount already devoted by Mr. Adamjee to charitable purposes totals no less than two and a half millions of rupees! It only remains to be stated that all the scholastic and charitable institutions founded and maintained by Mr. Adamjee are still in full working order, and each and all in a flourishing condition.
In December, 1897, to every one's surprise Mr. Adamjee was appointed the Sheriff of Bombay for the year 1897-98. As indicated by pouring letter and telegraphs the appointment got general satisfaction.
On this auspicious occasion some 40 addresses, from different places and bodies, were presented to Mr. Adamjee. The most notable of them was one organized by a large and influential citizens like Sir Dinshaw Maneckjee Petit, bart., (chairman). This was held at Petit Hall on 19th January, 1898, when thousands of Europeans and Native gentlemen attended.
The following address was presented to Mr. Adamjee in a golden casket :
"To Adamjee Peerbhoy, Esq., J.P. Sheriff of Bombay:
Sir : It affords us, speaking as we do on behalf of the various communities of Bombay, unqualified pleasure to be able to congratulate you on your selection for the chief civic honour of Bombay city in India.
It was but natural that the heart of every member Bohra community should have thrilled with delight when it became known that the choice of the Government of Lord Sandhurst for the Shrievalty for the ensuing year had fell upon your worthy shoulders.
In addition to them, your Musalman, European, Parsee, Hindu, and other fellow citizens also unanimously share in the feeling of gratification at your having been selected to fill the most ancident and distinguished civic office in the patronage of the State.
The high respect and esteem entertained for you may be ascribed to your large hearted, unsectarian charities, your solicitude for the poor, your assistance in the advancement of the industries of the country as also for your noble work in the cause of education and the amelioration of human suffering, which add brilliancy to a long, successful and honorable mercantile career. It must be gratifying for you to feel that you are in your declining years surrounded by sons who, in their social relations, reflect in no small measure your genial manners, kindness of heart, and virtues. Let us assure you that we are giving but faint expression to the general expectation when we express the hope that there await you in the near future and more lasting honours to carry down the well-known name of the head of an illustrious house to a distant posterity.
In conclusion, we once more offer you our congratulation and pray that the Almighty God may spare you to enjoy the honours you richly merit and grant you long life to enjoy them.
Signed by: Sir Dinshaw Manockjee Petit, Bart., Chariman, Adamjee Peerbhoy Public Reception Committee, JiJibhoy Framji Petit, Kazi Kabirrudin, Nooroodin Ebrahim, Goverdhandas Gokuldas Tejpal, Hon. Secretaries."
49th Dai, the High Priest of the Dawoodi Bohras also gave a grand entertainment to Mr. Adamjee and presented an address, on behalf of himself and his community, at the same time conferring on Mr. Admajee the distinguished rank of "Rafi-ud-Din" (i.e. Climax of Religion).
Mr. Adamjee Peerbhoy was the first member of his community to be made a Justice of Peace, and also the first to receive the hight appointment of Sheriff of Bombay. Mr. Admajee is recognized as the leading member of his community and that he has attained to his present position, influence and wealth by preserving habits, untiring energy, shrewd business capacities and above all, by his amiable, sympathetic and urbane disposition.
Mr. Adamjee has two daughters and six sons. The eldest son, Mr. Mohamedally, who is Justice of Peace, ably conducts his father's affairs and is already publicly known as one who worthily reflects his father's virtues. The second son, Mr. Abdul Husein, who is also a Justice of Peace, has a most genial and agreeable disposition. He promises to become a shining civic light, having lately been elected a member of the Bombay Municipal Corporation. He is ambitious to become useful to his fellow-citizens. The third son, Mr. Karimbhoy who is also a member of the Corporation, has the management of his father's large tanneries at Dharavi, Bombay.

EDITORIAL : THE TIMES OF INDIA DATED WEDNESDAY 13th August 1913
There will be general regret at the death of Sir Adamjee Peerbhoy. Sir Adamjee represented the best type of successful business enterprise. His wealth was made entirely by his own energy and presevering enterprise. He started life with next too none. But as he accumulated the carnest of a hard life he showed in a marked degree that trail, the charateristic of the modern Indian Capitalist. The indomitable courage he entered on his career and the Matheran railway may be cited as an instance of the Sir Adamjee was a self-made man. In 1867 he executed important contracts for the Bombay Arsenal. In 1870 he supplied army camp equipage. They were appreciated by the army.
In December 1878, Mr. Adamjee he undertook to supply 500 carts in 20 days from the date of order fine spirit of enterprise which he retained to a ripe old age. Moslems will remember him for his benefactions to their communal interests and all India is indebted to him for the splendid contribution which he made for the prosecution of scientific study at Aligarh. Government marked publicly their sense of his worth when they recommended him for Knighthood and now that he is gone we may think of him as a faithful citizen whose example for his successors to emulate.

Extracted from the Archives of PDB website :-

It was difficult for Dawoodi Bohras as for others to travel to Mecca and stay there for Haj during early days. Sir Adamji Peerbhoy realized this difficulty when he went on Haj for the first time in June 1882 with 125 Bohras from Kathyawar and Jamnagar. The people were required to come to Bombay to take a steamer for Mecca. There was no arrangement for Bohras to stay in Bombay and at Mecca, Medina and Karbala. So on his return from Haj he constructed a Sanatorium at Charni Road in Bombay and Bohra Rubats at all three places. Then in 1897 Seth Alibhai Karimji Alvi and Esaji Adamji established a Trust and named it as “Faiz-e-Husaini Charitable Trust with initial amount of Rs. 1,52,650/- by them and got it registered.

A memorandum submitted to the Governor of Bombay, Sir Leslie Wilson in 1933 states about this trust among many other cases of forceful usurpation of Community’s properties by Sayedna Taher Saifuddin Saheb. The text in brief is as follows :-

A trust known as Faiz-e-Husaini was founded by some honest and sincere good Bohras of Karachi some 35 years back. Due to enormous amount of good work and benefit the value of the trust increased to 35 lacs rupees in a short time. All along the trustees carried out their affairs quietly and peacefully without any interference from any of the Mullaji Sahebs. About 6 months ago when the present Mullaji Sayedna Taher Saifuddin went to Karachi he sent his agents to the trustees asking them 1) first to include a clause in the Trust Deed that the trustees would not do any thing without first obtaining the permission of Mullaji. 2) On a vacancy the trustee would be appointed by Mullaji. With that The Sayedna Saheb started coercion but was advised by his lawyers that “his action would be illegal and he would be civilly and criminally liable for any interference in the trust matter as Trust Deed prohibited the interference of any one other than trustees.” He came back to Bombay and instructed his solicitors to draw up a deed transferring all properties and funds of Faiz-e-Husaini in Karach, Bombay, Basra and Karbala to the Mullaji’s name. He then sent his emissaries to trustees in Karach to sign the deed. The entire circumstances how trustees were compelled to sign the deed is most horrifying. Thus the biggest charitable institution was usurped by Sayedna Taher Saifuddin. The memorandum had asked the Governor of Bombay to inquire into the matter by reference to the collector of Karachi and said that “Your Excellency will be horrified to know the tricks and dangerous games played by the Mullaji with Faiz-e-Husaini knowing fully well the law of the country.”

The same Faiz-e-Husaini today under the absolute control of Sayedna Saheb has become an exclusive tour and travel agent for Dawoodi Bohras. Its original office in Bombay has been shifted from Moriswala Musafarkhana building to Mazgaon after the raid by the Enforcement Directorate and exposure of big Hawala Racket through 204 illegal Bank drafts worth Rs. 27 lacs in Oct. 1984. Today because of the very stakes involved Faiz-e-Husaini has been given so much importance that Bohras are made to believe as if there is no way to go to Haj, Umra and Ziyarat out side India except through Faiz and they ask “How do you organise Hajj?”

An article from Archives of PDB website :-

Sayedna attempts to take credit for Saifee Hospital

By Saifuddin Insaf.

Today Sayedna Burhanuddin Saheb is taking undue credit for building a grand Hospital in Bombay. Actual credit for this Hospital today goes to two grandsons of Sir Adamji Peerbhoy namely, Advocate Abid Hatim Merchant and Mansoor Jaffer bhoy Jani. Let us understand this.

Similar to the land of Sir Adamji Peerbhoy Sanatorium Trust on which Saifee Hospital has now been built, the community's Abdul Kader E Ebrahim Trust and E.A. Currim Trust's land near Byculla in Bombay known as 'Dawood Baugh' was 1130 square worth more than Rs. 300 Crores.

As in case of Sir Adamji Peerbhoy Sanatorium Trust the original trustees of Dawood Baugh were compelled to transfer the entire property in the name of Sayedna Taher Saifuddin

In 1963 two years before his death Sayedna Taher Saifuddin made an announcement to built a 22 story "Saifee Jubilee Technical Institution" to be constructed at the cost of Rs. 20 Crores. It was a biggest event in the Bohra Community. The photographs of Sayedna with the President of India and other political dignitaries were widely publicised. New York times carried a full page paid advertisement. But for years nothing happened and ultimately in 1984 the entire property was sold to one Amir Builders and money pocketed by the Saifee Foundation Trust.

How could the Sayedna's administration publicly cheat a man of the stature of the President of India, the community and the public at large and get away with it?

It was because then the Dawoodi Bohra Reform Movement was not strong enough. There was non like Abid Merchant or Mansoor Jani to pull the Sayedna's trustees in the law courts and compel them to built the technical institution as
it is done in the case of Saifee Hospital.

Strangely Mr. Ismail Kanga the son of the famous reformist, late Khan Bahadur Mohammed Ali Kanga, was pushed in June, 1965 as a trustee of Sir Adamji Peerbhoy Sanatorium Trust with "a proposal to construct a Residencial-cum-Hospital Building" on G.S. no. 36 & 37 Maharishi Karve Road (Charni Road) i.e. on Sir Adamji Peerbhoy Sanatorium Trust land. This was quitely done when Sayedna Tahir Saifuddin had died and entire community was kept busy in mourning and breast-beating.

The trustees by manoeuvring the officials in Bombay Municipal Corporation got the plans of "Residential-cum-Hospital" passed. It will be a shock to the Dawoodi Bohras in general and Muslims in particular that in this plan a Bank was shown in place of the existing mosque and a ladies' lavatory in place of Sir Adamji's existing Darghah.

In order to demolish the existing structures of Sanatorium buildings, which were registered under Charity Commissioner, court's permission was required. So when the trustees went to the court for permission Sir Adamji's grand son, Abid Merchant came to know about the devilish scheme and halted the efforts of usurpers.

Advocate Abid Merchant and Mansoor Jani fought the case in City Civil Court and High Court in Bombay and in Supreme Court at Delhi bearing themselves the entire high cost of the cases. They had the courage and dedication to
challenge mighty priesthood. They were alone in front of lawyers and solicitors army of Sayedna. They were cursed, humiliated and discouraged. But they stood firms. All the files brought from B.M.C., Judiciary, Charity Commissioner etc. were stolen from the court room. Sayedna's trustees tried to use Sir Adamji's private plot, backside cemetary land, Sanatorium as Nursing Home etc. but Abid Merchant exposed them in the court and never allowed them to succeed.

They were also sucessful in insisting free beds in Saifee Hospital for the Dawoodi Bohras and even for reformist Bohras. They not only fought this case upto the Supreme Court but Mansoor Jani filed a case against the trustees with Charity commissioner for unregistered Saifee Hospital Trust and for not submitting the audited accounts for 13 years, criminal case with Bombay police for illegally transferring the trust money of Sanatorium Trust in the personal accounts of Ali Asghar Kalimuddin and Mudreka Zakiuddin. They caught the trustees on various fronts so much that the Senior Council of Dawat-Hadiya, Mudreka T. Zakiuddin came begging to them for out of court settlement which they refused. Inspite of all odds they saw to it that Sir Adamji Peerbhoy's name and memory remains and the property is utilised for the benefit of the Humanity.
