Dawoodi Bohras in the media

The one and only free public forum for Bohras. The focus of this forum is the reform movement, the Dawoodi Bohra faith and, of course, the corrupt priesthood. But the discussion is in no way restricted to the Bohras alone.

these videos of confessions by many people were taken surrounded by gundas and in fear of safety, and other times they were paid fakhir raqams for saying things. there is no shortage of money, and apparently most people can be bought....

I dont claim I am religious or I know every thing, but when I see behurmati of matme Hussain(s), it does boils up my blood, specially by those who are sitting on high rank of so called dawat.

basic ethics of matam is, we should do it with respect, and just just Quraan we need to remove shoes while doing matam.

but in this video it is clearly seen most so called shesadaz and jamiya ustaads are wearing footwear and doing matam for show off.

Breakaway Dawoodi Bohra leaders to have a conference on Tuesday
Tuesday, 11 March 2014 - 6:15am IST | Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA
Ashutosh Shukla

Supporters and children of Khuzaima Qutbuddin, the self-declared new Syedna of the million strong Dawoodi Bohra community will for the first time be addressing a press gathering. The interaction will take place at the Trident Hotel. As per the press release, Khuzaima's children "Dr. Abdeali Qutbuddin and Dr. Aziz Qutbuddin will be sharing their views / plans on the 53rd Dai ul-Mutlaq."

Soon after the demise of the Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, the 52nd Dai Ul Mutlaq of the community on January 17, there was a revolt of sorts in the community. Khuzaima Qutbuddin, the late leader's brother who until then was Mazoon, the second position to Dai, declared himself as the rightful successor. Burhanuddin, on the other hand had anointed his second son, Mufaddal Saifuddin as the new Syenda and 53rd Dai.

In a press statement after Burhanuddin's demise, the Khuzaima stated that the late Burhanuddin had performed the ceremony of succession on him in private as early as December 10, 1965.

The press statement alleged that "Mufaddal, his brothers and some other family members were took advantage of a severe debilitating stroke that had affected Syedna following his 100th birthday in London. They immediately and unilaterally made the untenable and false claim that Sydena Burhanuddin in that condition had appointed Mufaddal as his successor."

Over a month ago, dna had sent a questionnaire to Khuzaima wanting to know why the latter did not speak up or challenge the succession of Mufaddal in the presence of late Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin. In the response, while there was no direct response to the questions, a release stated "Syedna Qutbuddin in accordance with Syenda Burhanuddin's wishes, revealed that he was chosen successor immediately after Syedna Burhanuddin's sad demise."

Mumbai Bohras scramble to switch to lucky 53
Thursday, 6 March 2014 - 6:00am IST Updated: Thursday, 6 March 2014 - 12:57am IST | Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA

Mustafa Plumber

To celebrate 53rd Dai, community elevates the number to divine status.
Prashant Chaugule DNA
Wherever possible, a Thane resident ensured that his belongings and assets ended with the number 52. His mobile number, two-wheeler and four-wheeler plates had the same number. He even stays in flat No 502.

That was till recently. Now, the member of the Dawoodi Bohra community plans to have ‘53’ in all his new acquisitions. He is contemplating changing his phone number and intends to buy cars and two-wheelers with 53 as the last two digits on their number plates.

Fifty-three is now considered a lucky and auspicious number by the Dawoodi Bohra community. This is in response to Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin becoming the 53rd Dai-al-Matlaq of the community following the demise of the 52nd Dai, Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, in January.

“We consider it an auspicious number because we are led by the 53rd Dai,” said a member of the community on condition of anonymity. To highlight the significance of the number, 53,000 coconuts were offered at the mausoleum of Syedna Burhanuddin at the end of the mourning period on February 26.

The Dawoodi Bohras are making sure ‘53’ is promoted in every possible way. For instance, donations are being offered in the figure of 53 and the community plans to send 53 people for Haj pilgrimage this year.

Some others are looking at having phone numbers ending with 53 and vehicles with the same number.

The community leaders, too, are highlighting 53 as the new lucky number. “Yes, of course, it is,” a practising Dawoodi Bohra told dna. Some members, however, do not openly accept this, but the obsession with 53 is hard to ignore. “The important thing is our unconditional love towards our moula. Anything related to our moula is lucky and we take it as barakaat (blessing), including the number,” said another Dawoodi Bohra from Mazgaon.

Recently, on the eve of the late Syedna’s birth anniversary, a procession was carried out to commemorate his life. One-hundred-and-three groups participated in the procession. Each group comprised 52 members from the community with another person (the 53rd) being the flag bearer. The number 52 signified Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin’s incumbency as the 52nd Dai-al-Matlaq. The number 53 represented the incumbency of Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin as the 53rd Dai al-Matlaq.

Pervert, 66, nailed by passengers for clicking women’s pics on train
The accused, Shabbir Mohammed Ujjainwala, was arrested by the Palghar Government Railway Police (GRP) and charged with stalking, under Section 354(D) of the Indian Penal Code
Surat resident Shabbir Ujjainwala was caught clicking pictures of a teen; pictures of at least six other women in the bogie found on his phone.

A 66-year-old man from Surat was arrested on Monday for allegedly clicking pictures of a teenage girl using his mobile phone on board the Ahmedabad-Mumbai Gujarat Express.

The fellow passengers who confronted him and snatched his phone found that he had clicked pictures of several women in the compartment.

The accused, Shabbir Mohammed Ujjainwala, was arrested by the Palghar Government Railway Police (GRP) and charged with stalking, under Section 354(D) of the Indian Penal Code. He will be produced in the Virar Railway Court on Tuesday.

Police said Ujjainwala, employed as a nurse at a boys' hostel in Surat, is a widower and travels regularly to Mumbai to visit relatives. According to the complaint, a few passengers realised Ujjainwala was clicking pictures of the victim, a college student residing in Kandivali, after the train crossed Dahanu Road around 2 pm.

"The girl was travelling with her mother and grandmother in coach D1 and had boarded the train at Ahmedabad. Ujjainwala was seated opposite, and a couple of passengers noticed him clandestinely clicking her pictures. The passengers took away his mobile phone and handed it over to the girl's mother, who called up the GRP helpline," a Palghar GRP officer said.

Senior Inspector Pramod Dawre from Palghar GRP said that Ujjainwala had clicked pictures of at least other six women in the compartment and he was being questioned on whether he uploads these pictures on the internet.

The girl said that her entire family had been traumatised. "Thank God he got caught. Just thinking how damaging it would have been had he circulated my pictures makes me shiver. My father is especially worried," the girl said, adding that she couldn't have ever imagined that "a senior citizen, who appeared genial, would turn out to be a pervert".

Police said that the hostel where Ujjainwala is employed houses 250 boys. "The accused lives alone. Both his daughters have settled in Karachi after marriage, and he often visits relatives at Carnac Bunder in Mumbai," Senior Inspector Dawre said.

Qutbuddin was being true to his word: sons
Aziz Qutbuddin (l) and his brother Abdeali Qutbuddin during Tuesday’s conference
Mumbai Mirror Bureau

Aziz and Abdeali say the late Syedna had asked their father to be quiet about the appointment till the time was ripe.

Khuzaima Qutbuddin was bound by a promise he gave to the Syedna about his appointment as leader of the community 49 years ago, and that was why his family was quiet when the Syedna's pronounced his second son Mufaddal Saifuddin Dai in 2011 in a hospital in London, claimed Qutbuddin's sons on Tuesday. Qutbuddin is the late Syedna's brother.

"When late Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin did the Nuss (conferring of the succession) on my father, he told him that he did it in trust and would publicly reveal it later. He gave my father the ring pronouncing him Dai, but there were certain elements in the family that did not want this, and it was for our safety that he told my father that his appointment would be revealed to everyone when the time came. My father kept his promise till the end," said Abdeali Qutbuddin, Khuzaima Qutbuddin's son, at a news conference.

"We were in absolute shock and were waiting for the Syedna's health to improve so that his sons could stand corrected," said Abdeali, who holds a PhD from Manchester University.

He claimed that his father held the lofty position of Mazoon (second in command) for 50 years, and that his name was used right after the Syedna's when every Bohra took the 'Misak' (an oath). The family would use every forum to prove the late Syedna second son Mufaddal Saifuddin's "false," he said.

His father was not a nobody, having held the second highest position after the Dai for half a century, he said: "He was given this position at the young age of 25 in 1965. We have enough material to show that the Nuss was not logically possible on the night that a 100 year old person has a paralytic stroke."

Qutbuddin's sons Abdeali Qutbuddin and Aziz Qutbuddin would not say how many from the community supported their family. "We are a 12 lakh strong community in India, most of them from the working class. We are unable to give a number right now because people are scared. They fear there will be more than just excommunication. This issue is important because it will define the future of the community for the next 15-20 years," said Aziz.

Dawoodi Bohra factions now fight over custody of 9 kids

Dawoodi Bohra factions now fight over custody of 9 kids
(Left) Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin (centre) with his disciples; (Right) Khuzaima Qutbuddin (r), the brother of the late Syedna (l)
Kids taken away from Saifee Mahal by their mothers, daughters of Qutbuddin, on the very day the Syedna died.

As the battle over who is the rightful successor to the late Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin wages in the Dawoodi Bohra community, a parallel dispute has been happening between the two warring sides over custody of nine children who happen to be descendants of both factions.

On January 17, the very day that the Syedna passed away, the children -- who lived in Saifee Mahal, home of the Syedna and his family in Malabar Hill, were taken away to Thane by their mothers, and there has been no trace of them ever since.

Their mothers, Arwa and Fatema, are both daughters of Khuzima Qutbuddin who is now threatening legal action to claim spiritual leadership of the community as its 53rd Dai or religious leader. Thane is where Qutbuddin resides. Immediately after they left their Malabar Hill home, the children were "sent abroad to ensure their safety," said a member of Qutbuddin's family, requesting anonymity.

The children's fathers on the other hand, belong to Mufaddal Saifuddin's side of the family. Arwa is married to Mufaddal's son Taha; the couple have five children. Fatema is married to Mufaddal's nephew Ibrahim, and they have four children.

Insiders told Mirror that the battle over the children, aged between eight and sixteen years, has been brewing since January. And now that the mourning period for the late Syedna is over, both sides are becoming aggressive about their rights over the children.

The fathers of the children are now exploring all options to get the children back, while the mothers support their father Qutbuddin's faction over their husband's side, and do not want their children to live in Saifee Mahal any longer.

Members of Qutbuddin's family said that Arwa and Fatema, who were aware of the succession battle in the offing, "feared for their lives and their children's and hence fled". "They are firm believers in their father's philosophy and stake to the community leadership. They knew that their community would have choose between their father and Mufaddal as religious leader and that a split in the community was inevitable. They knew they would not be able to follow their father while living with their husbands, and had no choice but to flee," said the member of Qutbuddin's family.

"The children are safe and with their uncle Taher Bhaisaheb in the there for their safety," Zara Qutbuddin, head of Qutbuddin's public relations team said. Had the children not been sent overseas, Mufaddal's side would have traced them and forced them back to their home, claims the Qutbuddin faction.

Mufaddal's side on the other hand, was emphatic that the children should be with their fathers.

"They have been whisked away and forced to go with their mothers. They belong with their fathers," said a senior member of Mufaddal's side. However there was no official comment from this faction, on the grounds that the matter was personal in nature. Mufaddal's side, according to sources, are in talks with their lawyers to find a way to claim custody of the children.

"The children have been sent to US, where our laws do not apply. We are grappling with the situation to find a way out," said the Mufaddal family member.

WHAT LED TO THE FEUD?

After Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin died on January 17, the rift between the two sides became immediately apparent. Syedna's brother Khuzaima Qutbuddin (the Syedna's deputy and one of the claimants to the title of Dai) paid his last respects to the just-deceased Syedna and left the official residence of Saifee Mahal (Malabar Hill) for his other residence in Thane. The Syedna's second son Mufaddal Saifuddin, who was away in Colombo, rushed back to Mumbai and sat mourning beside his father's body.

That very night Khuzaima Qutbuddin made his first official address, indicating that the succession (nass) had been made in his favour 49 years ago and he was the 53rd Dai. Mufaddal Saifuddin, however, also claimed that he had been appointed as successor by the Syedna two years ago. Ever since, the two sides have been at war.

The Range Rover was gifted to Kutub of Kandivli probably by Ashter himself, he has also gifted him a Rolls Royce which was once used by SBM, I had posted the photographs somewhere on this forum. This Kutub was once a 'Tapori' of Kandivli who has now amassed huge wealth, courtesy Malik ul Ashter. In fact Ashter has got a flat in Kandivli itself which he frequents quite often.

The trip by Malek Bs is a business trip. It is his investment project. What is the benefit to common bohras to show such videos and send thru social medias? It is just an advertisement and nothing else. People here should ignore this.

[quote="Sequence"]Look at these guys they are trying to make joke on SKQ but ultimate joke is on them, they said they were laughing on waez of SKQ in toronto, while he was still in MAZOON rutba.

so what if his speech is lost, did they laugh on SMB as well, when he was terminally ill?

may lanat of ALLAH fall on these liars and hypocrites.
Agreed what a bunch of loosers and hypocrites, crawling out of the wood works now. Why did they not speak up when Sayedna Qutbuddin (TUS) was mazoon. I find Muffadal BS waez extremely boring and devoid of any intelleectual content, but I do not make fun of his obvious mental defeciency

Dawoodi Bohra women speak about home science
March 16, 2014 By Aziz Poonawalla 0 Comments
In my last post I defended my community, the Dawoodi Bohras, from accusations of Mr. Qutbuddin’s faction about the role of women and traditional values. The great flaw in my arguments of course is that I am a male. So here are many female voices from my community to speak for themselves instead.
For example, Rashida Mustafa writes at her blog, Child on Hip and Hand on Computer:
To be shouted down in the kind of storm levelled at us by the followers of Qutbuddin is judgemental and an offensive act of organised bullying and should be regarded as such.
On the other hand, it is vital not to disparage housework or to think that looking after a home requires no skill that ought to be taught. From Cleaning and Craft to Child-Psychology, there are subjects in the Home Science curricula that are more useful and fulfilling to the average woman than many others on offer. Entire curricula are being changed to accommodate this reasoning in progressive learning environments. New sets of qualifications are being generated with the same credit value and equivalence as the more old-fashioned academic disciplines so that our cherished values of equal rights, equal opportunity and equal dignity for every human being are reflected in the learning we promote. Nothing except complete arrogance and brutality would dismiss the rights of women at home or their roles and their work to the dustbin of the unaddressed.
Moreover, it is our belief, that of our own faith, that from these home-grown entrepreneurships women can be more economically independent and successful than when relegated to the brokerage of the service industry. Never mind women, it is our belief that even men will be more successful, independent, religious and courageous in their small corner shops than when employed by the Corporation. Would MoulaTUS then, advocate independence for men and servitude for women?
Why is it then, that we allow ourselves to be shaken up when we are told to reconsider our values? We have invested too much in the skills of servitude and like the prisoner who is released at last, we stand at the prison gates and wonder if we know how to live a life without drill. “Take me back in! Please give me a job! Tell me what to do!”
Meanwhile, the group blog Dawoodi Bohra Women has a number of posts by Bohra women, by professionals like Dr. Alefiyah Bharmal:
What a great advantage I had over my peers. I began graduate school and there were several times after completing my Masters when I just wanted to give up on my doctorate. It was so hard to juggle so many roles– a mother, wife, madresah teacher, and doctoral student. As I tucked my 9 month old into bed, cleaned the kitchen, and said goodnight to my family, I closed my eyes for a moment before pulling another “all nighter”, and every time I would feel the barakat from Moula’s RA raza telling me that he has faith in my success. This thought got me through endless nights of studying, tests, presentations, and papers. HIS barakat is present in my every amal as a psychologist.
housewives like Jamila Badroudine:
As we all know “health is wealth,” and in today’s times where people are health conscious, our beloved Moula TUS has taught us through simple ways how to attain that goal. Making roti, cooking food, and keeping the environment clean leads to a healthy life and keeps the family happy, too; a happy and healthy life leads to positive thinking.
single mothers like Rashida Sh. Najmuddin:
I understand the need to highlight the importance of women’s education. Having taken Arabic as an undergrad, my limited understanding of the language tells me that when Rasulallah SA has said that to seek ilm is farizat on every muslim and muslimah, the Arabic grammar would have encompassed the feminine gender along with the masculine even if the hadith had only included the word muslim. Yet, Rasulallah SA chose to use the word “muslimah” along with the word “muslim” highlighting the importance of a woman’s requirement to seek ilm. My daughters’ education is something that Rasulullah and my Moula TUS are both telling me is absolutely necessary.
and artists like Tasneem Mandviwala:
In a post 9-11 U.S., it certainly has become a very particular experience to be a Muslim woman in America. There are new challenges to navigate everyday with unknowable social outcomes lying in the future that we have to feel out, day by day. Ironically, even though my faith, worn visibly over myself in the form of a rida (a specific type of hijab), might on some level be held responsible for non-Muslim Americans’ sometimes initial, sometimes persistent negative views of me, it is this faith itself that allows me the strength to be patient and understanding in the face of ignorance.
Also worth reading is Durriya Badani’s reflections on the importance of the thaali program to her family, in a guest post at City of Brass:
Part of my faith is rooted in the countless moments of love I have experienced through my prayers, and emphasized in the following phrase, “Hal al-din illal Hub? Hal al-din illal Hub? Hal al-din illal Hub?” (“What is faith, except love?”) Syedna Saifuddin reminds us again and again, with Faiz al-Mawaid al-Burhaniyah being just one powerful example of how he has translated those words into meaningful action and impact. It is also another example of the way in which Syedna Saifuddin continues the legacy of Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin.
These are voices as authentic and as diverse as our community itself, and should be taken into account when hearing outsiders’ accusations. I am proud to be a part of a community that can mesh modernity and tradition so seamlessly. These are not the voices of oppressed women, but women who have freedom to make choices for themselves.

The Mad Hatter’s ball begins...

The Mad Hatter’s ball begins...
Once the new MPs sit in Central Hall, the Mad Hatter’s Ball could be replaced by a switcheroo
The Wonderland of politics has its own crazy logic. The more you turn things upside down, the better they tend to look

The strangest things happen at election time.

Anna Hazare has dumped his favourite acolyte Arvind Kejriwal and endorsed Mamata instead. So has Imam Bukhari. This has pitchforked her onto the national stage as a likely third front candidate for The Big Job. Salman Khan was last seen flying kites with Narendra Modi in Ahmedabad. Modi fans pitch this as a clear sign that Muslims are no longer averse to their leader. At least Bollywood's poster boy is not. Nor is the original AYM, who is no longer so young, nor so angry. He is Gujarat's most hardworking salesman.

Not to be left behind, the ageing disco dancer has dumped his leftist allies to become Didi's MP. While the bejewelled fat man who scored the disco number is now singing ditties to Didi's bete noire.

In the midst of all this, Amma has gone for the big kill. She has decided to set Rajiv's assassins free, now that the Supreme Court has spared them the gallows.

The freak shows on the side are as winsome. Kalmadi and Pawan Bansal, who brought ignominy to the Congress, look all set to fight the elections again on Congress tickets. The party has let Ashok Chavan go scot-free, even as Rahul demands stricter action against the Adarsh scamsters. Of course Chavan, like Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, is neck-deep in Adarsh. So is Uttam Khobragade, whose daughter has single-handedly managed to destroy Indo-US relations over an underpaid maid. In gratitude for the Congress support, Khobragade Sr has now staked claim to the Ramtek seat on a Sena-RPI ticket.

Kiran Bedi has dumped both Anna and Arvind, aligned with the BJP. She expects a Lok Sabha ticket, having declared Modi as the best man for 7 RCR. But Arvind is attacking Modi for shielding the corrupt. And AAP is fielding the Mahatma's grandson, Rajmohan Gandhi against him.

Meanwhile, Kiran Reddy has resigned as CM because the Congress is breaking up Andhra Pradesh to win some seats in Telangana with TRS, till recently its sworn enemy. And Tarun Tejpal, who has entrapped cricketers and politicians, lies rotting in jail for 80 days. He claims he's the victim of a BJP honey trap.

But the guys who take the cake at the Mad Hatter's Ball are not politicians. Penguin is pulping copies of Wendy Doniger's book just to welcome the incoming regime. The world's leading publishers prefer to shred a book rather than hurt Hindu sensibilities.

Meanwhile, the self declared new leader of the Dawoodi Bohras, the late Syedna's son, has asked all followers of the Islamic sect to not only declare their allegiance to him but abuse his uncle who the Syedna had anointed as his spiritual heir 50 years back.

Sharad Pawar still thinks he can make it to 7 RCR. So he won't fight the elections. Instead, like Manmohan Singh, he has sneaked into the Rajya Sabha and is contemplating whom to back. One day he declaims that Modi is not a criminal because the courts have cleared him. A fortnight later, he calls Modi a mass murderer. But Ashok Singhal, the venerable VHP leader, has the last laugh. Every true Indian, he argues, must produce 5 kids to keep Hindutva refreshed.

Rahul's high voltage campaign is a damp squib. Wherever I go I see him staring down at me in different, pensive postures from posters, kiosks and hoardings. (I have even seen a poster of him where he looked as if he was digging his nose.) Proving once again that monster budgets can't assure you monster impact. When your credibility is zero, you can spend thousands of crores but it won't fetch you one extra vote.

The tragedy is that even the Congress' most loyal supporters can't find a good enough reason to vote for it. The only votes it may get are from those who want to keep Modi out. This will get some seats for AAP too. But then, AAP is fielding some fine people. The Congress looks as if it will go with its old rogues. One good outcome of this bad decision may be that the entire lot could go missing from the Opposition benches in the new parliament.

As for Modi, I can't figure out his strategy. He goes to Bihar, runs down Nitish. He goes to Orissa, runs down Naveen. He goes to Bengal, runs down Mamata. Where is he going to find alliance partners? Or does he really think he can do it on his own?

The Wonderland of politics has its own crazy logic. The more you turn things upside down, the better they tend to look. We are, as Vishy Anand would say, in zugzwang. Once the new MPs sit in Central Hall, the Mad Hatter's Ball could be replaced by a switcheroo. Hopefully it will be as much fun.

Why is a raven like a writing desk? The Mad Hatter asked Alice. She had no answer. But if I were you, I would beware the Jubjub bird and shun the frumious Bandersnatch.

Dawoodi Bohra Controversy
Hello world,

Surat and Mumbai are important for Dawoodi Bohra community scattered through out the globe.Surat has Devadi Mubarak.Mumbai has the main residence of Dai, the religious head of the sect.On Monday,January 27,2014 Surat witnessed an unprecedented procession of Dawoodi Bohras, peaceful and, dignified, which drew everybody’s attention. Many questions were raised.i tried to probe the issue. It is nothing new.It happens in all big families.Rich and poor are affected equally when the issues of inheritance and succession arise.

The majority of Dawoodi Bohras have selected their religious head in a peaceful but equally strange manner.

i invite your vies on the issue.

Dr.Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, the 52nd Dai of Dawoodi Bohra community died at the age of 102 years. As per Gregorian calendar he was 99 years. Like Hindu calendar, Bohras follow lunar count, so roughly there is a deficit of 03 years in 99 years, 01 year in 33 years,11.060606 days in 01 year. For Bohras, late Syedna was 102 years old.Non-Bohras have to learn from Bohras to respect and follow the age old traditions.

52nd Dai is said to have nominated his heir twice during his life. First nomination was said to be in favour of his brother Khojema* Qutubuddin who has staked his claim. The second nominee was one of his children, Sayedana** Mufaddul*** Saifuddin who is widely accepted as 53rd Dai.

The strange phenomenon is processions by Dawoodi Bohras in city after city in support of Sayedana Mufaddul Saifuddin.Khojema Qutubuddin seems to have no supporter either in the Family or the Community at large. Little is known about his learning and contribution towards the Community and India.

The stampede during the funeral of the 52nd Dai was unusual and historic for Dawoodi Bohras. Always peace loving and very well disciplined, Bohras are not known or remembered for trouble making either for the State or for other religious bodies. As far as my memory goes back there were instances of Bohras retaliating and agitating in protest of fellow reformist Bohra citizens mainly, Asgar Ali Engineer and Zohra Cyclewala. It was 52nd Dai’s firm stand that made life difficult for reformists and rebellious Bohras. They were excommunicated by 52nd Dai.Probably he never wanted to see his hold getting weak on any count. 52nd Dai’s learning and deep understanding of Holy Koran evaporated during his dealings with the reformists.Probably that was the only weakness he had.

It will be interesting to see the outcome of this internecine competition for legacy. Immediately after the sad demise of 52nd Dai, the word was said to be spread that the succession issue would be decided by the omnipresent Imam. The method, time, and place of this decision was unknown and if that has come no one knows. At least that appears so. Otherwise Dawoodi Bohras would not have come out in processions in cities of their inhabitance to submit a memorandum in favour of Sayedna Mufaddul Saifuddin to District Collector, a government appointee by all means. The magnitude of these processions indicates that all is not well in the First Family of Dawoodi Bohras. It appears that Sayedana Mufaddul Saifuddin and his supporters want to pre-empt all legal and quasi legal attempts on behalf of Khojema Qutubuddin. Public demonstrations are by all means for creating pressure on the opposite camp and non-Boras mainly politicians who rule at present.

52nd Dai was expert in handling, tackling and dealing with erstwhile Bhartiya Jansangh, all ramifications of Congress, Janata Dal and Bharatiya Janta Party. He knew exactly what all politicians want and he was very prompt in satisfying them all by all means in equal vein. He never had any problem with Hindu extremist organisations like RSS, VHP, Bajrang Dal and Durgavahini. He was very friendly with media. He dealt with deftly and firmly other Islamic faiths in India. He was not very effective, at least that appeared so, in dealing with religio-political establishments in Pakistan, Bangla Desh and Afghanistan. His inter-action with Iran’s ruling clergy was never a matter of publicity. He was received with honour at Cairo, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. His knowledge and understanding of Holy Koran was probably the only reason for extremists in Saudi Arabia to allow his status,if not equal to Allah but next to him.Saudis and for that sake Islamic extremists worldwide never objected public display of his photographs as living deity representing Imam. They never object to such public display of H.H. Aga Khan’s photographs as well. Unfriendly treatment to all Shia sects by Pakistan’s successive religio-political rulers is a glaring example of disunity amongst all followers and children of Allah.

Sayedana Mufaddul Saifuddin’s learning and skill will be tested in his dealing with his uncle, Khojema Qutubuddin who has proclaimed himself as 53rd Dai.

i as a lover of Dawoodi Bohras and their practical wisdom in following 52nd Dai, would earnestly urge Khojema Qutubuddin to withdraw his claim to Dai’s position .God’s deemed representative,a living deity, should behave in a manner befitting the claim of legacy. That dictates Kojema Kutubuddin’s abdication of rights.

If this controversy is allowed to continue, politicians of all colours and advocates will take the center stage only to prove that children of God are all human beings and suffer from being human! It is difficult to say what would have been the reaction of late Asgar Ali Engineer to this situation. It is timely to note the respectful words from Zohra Cyclewala in tributes to 52nd Dai who has made her life extremely difficult . Sayedana Mufaddul Saifuddin has a challenging task as 53rd Dai to usher in reforms from above. Probably that will be the price Khojema Qutubuddin would demand in reciprocation of abdication of his claim to legacy.

*Khojema also spelt as Khuzaima
**Syedna also pelt as Sayedana
***Mufaddul also spelt as Muffadal
