Imam `Ali [a] said,
"Allah sent the Prophet after the mission of other prophets had stopped and the peoples were in slumber for a long time. Evils were raising heads, all matters were under disruption and in flames of wars, while the world was devoid of brightness, and full of open deceitfulness. Its leaves had turned yellow and there was absence of hope about its fruits and its water had gone underground. The minarets of guidance had disappeared and signs of destruction had appeared. It was stern to its people and frowned in the face of its seeker. Its fruit was vice and its food was carcass. Its inner dress was fear and outer cover was sword."

Imam al-Hasan [a] narrated about his grandfather, the Holy Prophet [s]:
"God’s Prophet (s) was magnificent. His face shined as bright as the full moon. He was taller than the medium-sized people and shorter than the thin and tall people. He had a big head. His hair was neither too curly nor was it too soft and straight. He (s) parted his hair when it grew long. Otherwise he left it alone. Whenever his hair grew long, he never let it grow lower than his earlobes. His complexion was shining brightly. He had a broad forehead. His eyebrows were long and curved, they were thick but not attached to each other. Whenever he (s) got angry, the veins between his eyebrows got swelled up. His nose was slim and slightly raised in the middle. He possessed an illumination which always accompanied him in such a way that whoever did not ponder carefully over him thought he (s) was haughty.
His beard was short but bushy. His cheeks were flat and thin. His lips were big, and his teeth were bright white. He had a thin layer of hair extending from his chest down to his belly button. His neck looked like a silver jar. He had a balanced build. His body was strong, and his chest and stomach were in line with each other. He had wide muscular shoulders. His body was brilliant white. There was a thin layer of hair from his neck down to his belly button, but his lower chest and stomach had no hair. However, his upper chest and shoulders were hairy. His elbows were large, his palms were sturdy, his hands and feet were rough. His hands and legs were coordinated and his bones were straight without any crookedness. The sole of his feet were curved, and his heels were not chubby such that water passed under his feet and was not blocked.
When he (s) moved he took firm steps. He leaned to one side slightly, and walked fast but gently as if he was moving fast downhill. When he turned to the right or left, he turned his whole body around. He lowered his eyes and looked to the Earth more than he looked up to the sky. He never stared, and greeted everyone he (s) saw."

A man asked the Prophet (s): “O Prophet of God! What is [the requirement of] knowledge?”
The Prophet (s) replied: “Silence.”
The man asked: “What is next?”
The Prophet (s) replied: “Listening to knowledge.”
The man asked: “And what is next?”
The Prophet (s) replied: “Remembering it.”
The man asked: “And what is next?”
The Prophet (s) replied: “Acting upon it.”
The man asked: “And what is next?”
The Prophet (s) said: “Spreading and sharing it with others.”

In the expedition of Dhaat al-Riqaa`, the Messenger of Allah [s] disembarked under a tree at the edge of a valley. A flood began that cut him [s] off between him and his companions.
So a man from the polytheists saw him, and he saw the Muslims standing at the edge of the valley waiting for the flood would cease. So the man from the polytheists said to his people: "I will kill Muhammad".
So he went and attacked the Messenger of Allah [s] with a sword, then he said: “Who will save you from me, O Muhammad?”
So he [s] said: “My Lord, and your Lord”. So Jibra’il [a] uprooted him from his horse, and he fell upon his back, and the Messenger of Allah [s] stood up, took the sword and sat upon his chest and said: "Who will save you from me, O Ghawrath (the man’s name)?"
So the man said: “Your generosity and your honor, O Muhammad”.
So he [s] let him go, and the man stood up and said: “By Allah, you are better than me and more honorable”.

A lecture from Ja`far as-Sadiq on the Prophet Muhammad [s]:
"Their sins and ugly actions did not prevent our Lord – due to His forbearance, caring, and kindness – from selecting for them His most loved of the prophets and honouring them with Muhammad b. `Abdillah [s], born in the town of splendour and to a family of nobility.
His association was not suspicious, nor was his lineage diluted. His description was not unknown to the people of knowledge. He was heralded by the prophets in their writings, he was spoken of in the appellations of the scholars, and he was anticipated by the sages in their descriptions of him. No Hashimi has matched his courteousness or paralleled him, and no Abtahi is equivalent. His attribution was restraint, and his nature was generosity. He was programmed with the dignity of prophethood, and his character was set upon the qualities of messengership.
Every nation gave [the glad tidings about him] to the one thereafter, and from father to father – from one generation to the next. No indecency was mixed into his genealogy, nor did any [immoral] intercourse make his birth impure – from the son of Adam to his father `Abdillah. He was of the best group and the noblest tribe, from the exclusive entourage, the preserved womb, and the reserved scree. Allah had chosen him, and He was pleased with him, and He selected him, and He gave him from the knowledge of His keys and from the wisdom of His springs. He raised him to be a mercy to the worshipers and a spring to the cities.
Allah revealed him His Book; therein is eloquence and clarification – an Arabic Qur’an, free of complexities so that they may be pious. He elucidated it to the people; He approached him with the knowledge He systemized, and a religion that He has clarified in its obligations, He explained it and determined its boundaries for the people and clarified them. Therein are matters that He unveiled to His creatures and He announced them [openly]. Therein there are indications to salvation and knowledge that calls to His guidance.
So the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله preached that which he was sent with, and demanded [obedience] to what he ordered, and delivered what he carried from the burdens of prophethood. He was patient for his Lord and he fought for His cause. He advised his nation and called them to salvation, exhorted them in the Reminder, guided them to the cause of guidance – with methods and capacities that established a foundation for the worshipers, and with sources of light that he raised as beacons for them – so that the worshipers may not be misled after him. And he was compassionate and merciful to them."

The Messenger of Allah [s] said, in a sermon,
"Shall I not inform you of the best traits in this world and the Hereafter?
(1) Forgiving one who wrongs you,
(2) Establishing relations with one who has cut you off,
(3) Kindness towards one who does evil against you,
(4) Granting to one who has denied you."

The Prophet Muhammad [s] said,
"Teach your children three qualities: love of your Prophet; love of his Ahl al-Bayt, and the recitation of the Qur'an. Verily, the learned of the Qur'an will be with the prophets and the pious in the shade of Allah’s mercy on the Day when there will be no shade but His."

The Prophet [s] said,
"Allah made the delight of my eyes in prayer. He made prayer beloved to me just as He made food beloved to the hungry and water beloved to the thirsty. [The difference, however, is that] when the hungry eats, he will be satiated, and when the thirsty drinks, he will be quenched, but I never am never satiated (quenched) from prayer."

Ibn `Abbas said, "O Messenger of Allah, how many Imams will there be after you?"
He [s] said, "The same number as the number of apostles of Jesus, the tribes of Moses, and the chiefs of the Children of Israel."
Ibn `Abbas said, "O Messenger of Allah, how many were there?"
He [s] said, "There were twelve, and there are twelve Imams after me."

"The number of months in the sight of Allah is twelve - so ordained by Him the day He created the heavens and the earth; of them four are sacred: that is the straight usage." (9:36)
Regarding this verse, Imam al-Baqir [a] said, "As for the year, that is my grandfather, the Messenger of Allah [s]. It has twelve months, so that is [the Imams from] the Commander of the Faithful [a] to me, to my son Ja`far, to his son Musa, to his son `Ali, to his son Muhammad, to his son `Ali, to his son al-Hasan, to his son Muhammad the Guide the Mahdi. Twelve Imams, the Proofs of Allah in His creation, and His trustees over His revelation and his knowledge. The fourth four sacred ones are those whom are the upright religion. Four of them will appear with the same name: `Ali the Commander of the Faithful [a], my father `Ali b. al-Husayn, `Ali b. Musa, and `Ali b. Muhammad. The recognition of these is the upright religion, so do not oppress yourselves regarding them. Yes, claim them all and be guided."

When Jesus the son of Mary [a] sailed upon the sea, he threw a portion of his food into the water.
Some of his apostles said, "O Spirit and Word of Allah! Why did you do that? That was from your food."
Jesus replied, "I did this so that a sea animal may eat it. The reward of that is with Allah the Greatest."

Jesus the son of Mary [a] gave a sermon to the Children of Israel, so he said,
"O Children of Israel! Do not eat until you are hungry. If you are hungry, then eat, but do not fill yourselves. If you fill yourselves, your necks will thicken, your sides will fatten, and your Lord will be forgotten."

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (ceaseless charity); a knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him (for the deceased)."

Jesus the son of Mary [a] passed by a people who were weeping. He said, "Why are they weeping?"
So it was said, "They are weeping over their sins."
So he said, "Then abstain from committing them, and they will be forgiven."

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir [a] said,
"By Allah, the most beloved of my companions to me are those who are the most pious, the most discerning, and the most protective of our hadith. The worst of them to me are those who instantly detest a hadith coming from us and narrated from us when they hear it. They do not accept it, they are disgusted by it, they deny it, and they consider those who act by it to be disbelievers; while they do not comprehend that the hadith is indeed from us and connected to us. By that, they exit our wilaya."

The Prophet Muhammad [s] said,
"The best of deeds according to Allah are three:
(1) Satiating the hunger of a Muslim,
(2) Paying his debt,
(3) Alleviating his calamity.

Bismillah

For those who are finding hard to cope up with these present times. read this.

During this occultation, there are unique trials, tests, tribulations, confusions and perplexities. Imam ar-Rida (as) said in two narrations that the Shi`a will be "refined (yuftanoon) just as gold is refined; purified just as gold is purified". When gold is taken out of the ground, it is black. During the refinement process, in order to rid it of excess minerals, it must be burned until nothing remains except pure gold. Likewise, during the occultation, "years will come that will perish them, a sword that will kill them, and a disagreement that will scatter them" (يأتي عليهم سنون تفنيهم، وسيف يقتلهم، واختلاف يبددهم ). In the same hadith, as-Sadiq says this process will continue until 300+ true Shi`a are left. If you read the narrations on what constitutes a true Shi`a of Ahl al-Bayt, it's a very high bar that many of us will never reach. Beyond the 313 companions of the Mahdi, he will have no less than 10,000 others in his army, who will be people of taqwa, but not at the same level of yaqeen as the 313. These are the people that survive the tribulations, which will cause many Shi`as and Muslims to deviate under the heat.

Not only are we supposed to "await the relief day and night" (ليتوقعوا الفرج صباحا ومساء), but awaiting the relief is considered a part of the relief (إنتظار الفرج من الفر ). This is a time period where we can gradually develop our relationship with the Imam and be counted from his followers without even fighting alongside him. The reward of one who recognizes him is like that of those who will be in his pavilion

Another spiritual instruction given to us for the occultation is to hold our tongues and stick to our homes This is an indicator to the outward corruption and schism of this time period. The more time spent in the markets/malls, for example, the more likely we are to see/hear/do/buy things that are bad for our relationship with God and His representative. This is becoming increasingly the case with nudity, music marketed towards our desires, and a global culture that maximizes our ego and materialism.

Now, if you've read in between the lines, there's a trend here. Recognition of the Imam is not just knowing his name and biography. True recognition is to have an experiential relationship with him; so much so that you begin to take on his characteristics. Imam as-Sadiq (as) says, regarding the true Shi`a, "They are those, whose lives are so simple, whose abodes move from place to another, who, if they are seen they, will not be known, if they are absent, they will not be missed, if they become ill, they will not be visited, if they propose to a woman, they will not be married, and if they die, their funerals will not be attended. It is they, who divide their wealth among them, who visit each others' graves, and who never disagree even if their countries are different.” This isn't an instruction to be aloof, but rather, it's describing the state of the true believers of this time. They will be supporters of one another and have close ties, but to the outside world, it is as if they do not even exist. They are not recognized by their merit, and that's exactly what is happening now. The good is seen as evil, and the evil is seen as good, and so consequently, the Shi`a are despised, rejected, unrecognized, not missed, not visited, and not felt for. Sound familiar?

This is a part of the tawalla and tabarra. Anyone can pray, fast, perform Hajj, and give alms, but the true Shi`i is the one who has a direct relationship with his Imam and disassociates from his enemies. During the time of Husayn (as), when he was calling his supporters to come with him to Karbala, it did not suffice to say "I am going to stay in Medina, pray more tahajjud, write up some fiqh manuals". The true supporter had to live Husayn's life and die his death. Those who didn't regretted that, and they became the tawwabun. During the time of as-Sadiq, he became a teacher and educator in theology and jurisprudence, and likewise, his companions were not off joining revolutions - they were students of his and teachers of the people.

What I find fascinating is that the 313 live the life of the Hidden Imam. That is, they live simply, they are unrecognized, they are forgotten, they support one-another, and they seclude themselves from the overspreading darkness of this world. They feel the Imam's suffering and fear, and live it. But, their proximity to Imam will allow them to all travel to Mecca prior to his coming. They will be the first to give bay`a to the Imam upon his appearance. Then, they take on the new characteristics of the Imam: utmost strength, courage, initiative, and they abandon taqiyya. Then, with the Imam together, they bring justice and peace to a world fraught with tyranny and injustice.

Imam `Ali [a] said,
"Whoever would love to leave this world pure of sins, like pure gold with no defects, with no one to attribute a wrong to him [on Judgment Day], then he is to recite the Relation of the Lord (Surat al-Ikhlas) twelve times after each of the five prayers.
Then, he should stretch forth his hands and say:
'O Allah,
I ask You by Your hidden, treasured, clean, pure, blessed name,
and I ask You by Your mighty name and Your ancient power,
I ask You to bless Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad.
O Giver of gifts,
O Freer of captives,
O Emancipator of the necks from the Fire,
I ask You to bless Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad,
and to liberate my neck from the Fire,
and to take me out of this world secure,
and to enter me into Paradise safely,
and to make the beginning of my supplication a success,
and its middle a prosperity,
and its end a goodness,
Surely, You are the Knower of the unseen.'
This is from what the Messenger of Allah [s] taught me, and he commanded me to teach it to al-Hasan [a] and al-Husayn [a]."
(Allaahumma innee as’aluka bismika ‘l-maknooni ‘l-makhzooni ‘T-Tuhri ‘T-Taahiri ‘l-mubaarak, wa as’aluka bismika ‘l-`aZeemi wa sulTaanika ‘l-qadeem, as’aluku an tuSalliya `alaa MuHammadin wa aali MuHammad, yaa waahiba ‘l-`aTaayaa, wa yaa muTliqa ‘l-usaaraa, wa yaa fakkaaka ‘r-riqaabi mina ‘n-naar, as’aluka an tuSalliya `alaa MuHammadin wa aali MuHammad, wa an tu`tiqa raqabatee mina ‘n-naar, wa tukhrijanee mina ‘d-dunyaa aaminan, wa an tudkhilanee ‘l-jannata saaliman, wa an taja`ala du`aa’ee awwalahu falaaHan wa awsaTahu najaaHan wa aakhirahu SalaaHan, innaka anta `allaamu ‘l-ghuyoob)

A man wrote to Imam Hasan al-`Askari [a], asking, "How can a servant worship his Lord while he cannot see Him?"
The Imam replied, "My Master and my Lord and Benefactor is too great to be seen by me or my forefathers."
The man wrote back, "Did the Messenger of Allah [s] see his Lord?"
The Imam replied, "Allah made His Messenger's heart see the light of His greatness, which he loved."

Imam Musa al-Kadhim [a] said,
"There is no salvation except by obedience,
and obedience is by knowledge,
and knowledge is by learning,
and learning is by an intellect with conviction.
There is no knowledge except from a divine teacher."

The Messenger [s] said,
"Allah punishes the tongue by a punishment that He does not punish any of the limbs.
It says [on the Day of Judgment]: 'O Lord, You have punished me with a punishment by which You have not punished anything.'
So it is said to it: 'There came from you a word, and it reached the easts and wests of the Earth. Because of it, blood was shed unjustly. Because of it, a forbidden property was plundered. Because of it, a private part was violated. So by My might, I surely punish you with a punishment that I do not punish anything of your other limbs.'"
