Ridiculous Fatwas Of A Salafi From Saudi Arabia.

Unread post by ghulam muhammed » Sun Feb 12, 2012 4:30 pm

Fatwas from Shaykh Abdullah Ibn Abdur-Rahman al-Jibreen, a member of the General Presidency of Islaamic Research, Iftaa, Call and Propagation, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia :-

This “Noble Sheikh” once praised Osama bin Laden saying, “Osama was mujahid in the path of Allah before. And he had major efforts in the land of Afghanistan. May Allah give him success and make him victorious and make
victory happen by him. Until now he is still participating in Jihad.” (See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5TvlNECROM)

Presented below is a comparative analysis of Prophetic statements and some of Ibn Jibreen's radical pronouncements extracted from the book Fatawa Islamiyah collected by Muhammad bin Abdul Aziz Al-Musnad.

This book, published by Darussalam, contains fatwas by five authorities namely,

1. Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah bin Baz
2. Muhammad bin Salih Al-Uthaimeen
3. Abdullah bin Abdur Rahman Al-Jibreen
4. Permanent committee for legal rulings (Saudi Arabia)
5. Fiqh Council of Saudi Arabia

*Husband not obliged to pay for wife’s treatment:*

In one of his fatwas Ibn Jibreen says, “ It is not an obligation upon the husband to pay the cost of his wife’s treatment, nor the cost of the medicines, nor the doctor’s fee, because this not part of her normal essential needs; rather it is something temporary, so it is not required of him.” But if he pays “it would be an act of generosity, virtue, and
righteousness.” (Volume 5, p.184)

Compare this to the kindness of our beloved Prophet who said: ‘The most perfect of the believers in matters of conviction (eeman) is he who is best in conduct (khulq), and the best of you are those who are best to their wives” (Tirmizi). In another saying the Prophet said, ‘The best dinar a man spends is the dinar he spends for his family” (Muslim).

It is the belief of Muslims that those who differ with the Prophet’s understanding of Islam (particularly when it is made known through an authentic report) commit kufr, the most blasphemous of all crimes in the eyes of Allah.

*Associating with non-Muslims:*

Prophet’s greatest qualities included his humanitarianism and mastery of interpersonal skills which has been praised by the Quran in following words: “It is part of the mercy of Allah that you (O Prophet) deal gently with them (the people around you). Had you been severe or harsh-hearted they would have broken away from you.” (3:159).

It was this concern for peaceful coexistence with all human beings that made the Prophet repeatedly underscore the importance of neighbourliness and the value of preserving friendship. He said: “Make good neighborly connections with one who is your neighbor, for you will then be a (true) Muslim, and keep good company with one who keeps
company with you, for you will then be a (true) believer.” (Tirmizi, Ibn Majah).

In fact, such has been the emphasis placed by Islam on the rights of a neighbour, the Prophet once feared (in a report that is found in both Bukhari and Muslim) that neighbours would be granted inheritance rights in the properties of Muslims along with their legal heirs. No wonder the Prophet instructed the Muslims saying, “When you cook broth, increase its water and give some of it to your neighbour” (Muslim). It may be noted here that in none of the aforementioned reports the Prophet differentiates between a Muslim and a non-Muslim neighbour. In other words, a neighbour is a neighbour and, insofar as a Muslim is concerned, he/she enjoys all the rights conferred on him/her by Islam irrespective of his/her religion, caste, colour or social status.

The Quran goes a step further and says, “Repel evil with goodness; then will he between whom and you was hatred become as it were your friend and intimate” (41:34).

Reproduced below is another fatwa by Ibn Jibreen in the form of a reply to a question about associating with
non-Muslims.

“Q: I am living in Jordan in a house populated mostly by Christian brothers, and we eat and drink together. Is my prayer invalid, and is my living with them permissible?

(Ibn Jibreen): “Before answering your question I would like to make a point: I hope that it was a slip of the tongue when you said “I live with Christian brothers,” for there is absolutely no brotherhood between the Muslims and Christians…..So it is not permissible for the Muslims to describe the disbeliever- whatever his brand of disbelief, be he Christian, Jewish, Magian, or apostate- as a brother; so beware my brother of using such expressions.” “ ..It is necessary to avoid mixing with non-Muslims, because mixing with them causes the loss of one’s religious zeal from the heart and may even lead to affection and love for them.” (Volume 1, pp 263-265)

*Muslims who do not pray are apostates and should be killed:*

Another example of religious fanaticism can be found in the following fatwa issued by the Saudi cleric, the late Uthaimeen, who enjoyed status on a par with Ibn Jibreen. When asked about a person who does not perform salah,
that is, namaaz, Uthaimeen ruled that such a person “is a disbeliever and he is outside the pale of Islam. He must be called upon to repent; if he turns to Allah in repentance and prays, then Allah will turn to him in forgiveness…but if he does not repent, he must be killed as an apostate and buried outside the graveyards of the Muslims without being washed or shrouded, and without prayers being said over him” (Fatawa Arkanul Islam, pp 389-390).

This certainly is not the “vision of Islam” that is found in the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet. The truth is
that the Salafi fatwa books which betray an intolerant Khawariji mind-set have no place in modern Muslim society. If our beloved Prophet were alive today he would have unequivocally condemned such provocative books. While
freedom of expression is one of the basic doctrines of Islam, it cannot be invoked to misrepresent Islam and pollute gullible minds.

Fatwa: woman using a cell phone will have acid thrown in her face

May 14, 2012

Fatwas against women are becoming common again. In Noshki, Balochistan, a fatwa was announced in a mosque on May 11, stating that any woman using a cell phone will have acid thrown in her face. Another fatwa was issued in Kohistan about two weeks ago, warning ‘NGO women’ that they would be forcefully married to their local men if they dared to enter the area. There was a time when such fatwas were more common resulting in serious punishments inflicted on women who dared to venture beyond the four walls of their homes. However, over the last four years there has been a steady improvement in creating space for women to be more visible in public.

Who will tell the “fatwa guys” that they are nearly an extinct species. Who will tell these men that they need to wake up to 2012. Who will tell them that our interest in them is limited to a single news item. Perhaps they should be kept in a museum with the caption “we used to have people like this who thought work for women was ‘un-Islamic’ but marrying them by force was ‘Islamic’. Idiots who thought talking on a cell phone was ‘un-Islamic’ but throwing acid in women’s faces was ‘Islamic’!!”

I think it is time for our society to forcefully stop such people who not only violate the dignity and safety of women citizens, but also give a bad name to Islam, a religion which places a priority on the dignity of women.

Fatwa: The Final Solution?

A fatwa is a legal pronouncement in Islam, issued by a religious law specialist on a specific issue. Usually a fatwa is issued at the request of an individual or a judge to settle a question where ‘fiqh’ or Islamic jurisprudence, is unclear. A scholar capable of issuing fatwas is known as a ‘mujtahid’.

Because Islam has no centralized, international priestly hierarchy, there is no uniform method to determine who can issue a valid fatwa and who cannot, and upon whom such fatwas are binding. Some Islamic scholars complain that too many people feel qualified to issue fatwas.

The Sheikh of Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Muhammad Sayid Tantawy, who leads religious authority in the Sunni Muslim establishment in Egypt, said the following about fatwas issued by himself or the entire Al-Azhar University: "Fatwa issued by Al-Azhar are not binding, but they are not just whistling in the wind either; individuals are free to accept them, but Islam recognizes that extenuating circumstances may prevent it. For example, it is the right of Muslims in France who object to the law banning the veil to bring it up to the legislative and judicial authorities. If the judiciary decides in favour of the government because the country is secular, they would be considered to be Muslim individuals acting under compelling circumstances." Otherwise, they would be expected to adhere to the fatwa.

In nations where Islamic law is not the basis of law, different mujtahids can issue contradictory fatwas. In such cases, Muslims would typically honour the fatwa deriving from leadership of their religious tradition. For example, Sunni Muslims would favour a Sunni fatwa over a Shiite one.

This is where, I believe, the problem starts.

Muslims today, are divided amongst themselves. It is this division, supplemented by lack of knowledge, which is giving the clerics, a wide scope to issue edicts.

What the clerics as well as their followers (rather blind followers) fail to see is that such divisions are not endorsed by Islam. On the contrary, Islam believes in fostering unity amongst its followers. And Muslims have been asked to be united by a scripture, not other than Quran.

Not only Quran asks Muslims to be united, it is also prohibited to make divisions in Islam, which again, they either don’t see or ignore.

It is, however, a misconception that a Muslim should follow any one of these four schools of thoughts i.e. Hanafi, Shafi, Hanbali or Maliki. There is no proof whatsoever in the Qur’an or any authentic Hadith that a Muslim should only follow one of these four Imams.

It is also worth mentioning that these very four Imams said that if any of their fatwas or teachings contradicts Qur’an, or the sayings of the Prophet (pbuh) i.e. Hadith, then that particular Fatwa of theirs should be rejected, and the Sunnah of the Prophet should be followed.

Therefore, it is urgently required on the part of Muslims to stop the practice of making supreme judges out of these so called Imams and move towards the Holy Quran which is not a book but a constitution of life (only if implemented in true spirit). Till that happens, the clerics will go on cashing on the ignorance of the community and media will continue blowing the matter out of proportion.

Sheikh Abdullah Daoud, Saudi Arabian Cleric Issues Fatwa Calling For Female Babies To Wear Burkas

Footage of a Saudi cleric calling for all female babies to have their faces covered with the burkha has surfaced.

Sheikh Abdullah Daoud delivered the fatwa on Islamic al-Majd TV and stressed his belief the veil would protect baby girls from being sexually molested.

Sheikh Mohammad al-Jzlana, a former judge at the Saudi Board of Grievances, told the channel the ruling was “denigrating to Islam and Shariah and made Islam look bad.”

Al-Jzlana also urged Muslims to ignore “unregulated” fatwas.

While the comments have been greeted with outrage on social media, it is not the first time Saudi officials have made controversial comments of this nature.

Saudi court said to order criminal to be surgically paralyzed

DUBAI (Reuters) - Amnesty International has condemned a reported Saudi Arabian court ruling that a young man should be paralyzed as punishment for a crime he committed 10 years ago which resulted in the victim being confined to a wheelchair.

The London-based human rights group said Ali al-Khawaher, 24, was reported to have spent 10 years in jail waiting to be paralyzed surgically unless his family pays one million Saudi riyals ($270,000) to the victim.

The Saudi Gazette newspaper reported last week that Khawaher had stabbed a childhood friend in the spine during a dispute a decade ago, paralyzing him from the waist down.

Saudi Arabia applies Islamic sharia law, which allows eye-for-an-eye punishment for crimes but allows victims to pardon convicts in exchange for so-called blood money.

The Arabic-language al-Hayat daily quoted Khawaher's 60-year-old mother as saying her son was a juvenile aged 14 at the time of the offence. She said the victim had demanded 2 million riyals to pardon her son and later reduced this to 1 million. "But we don't have even a tenth of this sum," she said.

Al-Hayat said an unnamed philanthropist was trying to raise funds to pay the blood money, but it was not clear how much time remained before Khawaher's sentence was to be carried out.

Amnesty said the case demonstrated the need for Saudi Arabia to review its laws to "start respecting their international obligations and remove these terrible punishments from the law".

Saudi judges have in the past ordered sharia punishments that include tooth extraction, flogging, eye gouging and - in murder cases - death.

‘Men can peep at future wives,’ Egypt fatwa claims

An Egyptian preacher’s controversial remarks have hit the headlines this week after he issued a fatwa (religious edict) allowing a man to see his wife-to-be “while she is showering” before they marry.

In a video, Salafist preacher Usama al-Qawsi said that the man can “hide" while watching the woman he “intends to marry” bathe.

“If you were really honest and wanted to marry that woman, and you were able to hide and watch her in secret, see the things that she wouldn’t usually let you see before marrying her, then it is acceptable as long as your intentions are pure,” Qawsi said in a video.

“One of the Prophet’s companions did that. Some disapproved and told him: ‘How do you do that when you’re one of the Prophet’s companions?’ The Prophet answered: ‘If you can see something that would make you want to marry her then go ahead and do it.’”

In Islam, it is prohibited a woman to show parts of her body other than her hands and face to males, other than her husband, or direct members of her family known as “mahram.”

But his fatwa was swiftly rejected by the Egyptian Minister of Religious Endowments Mohammad Mukhtar.

“This is what we say to him and the likes of him, where is the glory and masculinity in watching a woman shower?” Mukhtar was quoted as saying.

“Would you allow this to happen to your daughter? If it was OK with you then it isn’t with the conservative, civilized Muslim and Christian societies – they disapprove of it. Besides, Islam preaches that modesty should be in our nature and all religions concur.”

This is not the first time a Salafist preacher has caused controversy in Egypt.

At the height of international World Cup fervor last June, an ultra-conservative Egyptian cleric said that watching soccer matches was unacceptable in Islam because it is a distraction and “destroys nations.”

Yasser Borhami, a founding member of the main Salafist movement in Egypt, the Salafist Call, said spending time watching the games was “a disaster that makes me very irate.”

He said it was a distraction from religious and worldly duties, ultimately leading to “the destruction of nations and peoples.”
His remarks sparked an outcry, at a time when Egyptians are glued to their televisions into the early morning hours because of the time difference with Brazil.

Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia has warned against celebrating the birthday of the Prophet (PBUH)

Grand Mufti Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Asheikh has warned against celebrating the birthday of the Prophet (peace be upon him), saying that it is a superstitious practice that was illegally added to the religion reported Arab News.
“It is a Bida (a sinful religious innovation) that crept into Islam after the first three centuries when the companions and successors of the companions lived.”

Instead, it is obligatory for Muslims to follow the Prophet’s teachings as contained in the Sunnah , the sheikh said in his Friday congregational sermon at the Imam Turki bin Abdullah mosque in Riyadh.

Addressing the weekly Friday sermon Sheikh Abdul Aziz said that those who urge others to celebrate the birthday of the Prophet are evil and corrupt. “The true love of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) is manifested by following in his footsteps and supporting his Sunnah … that is how the love for the Prophet (pbuh) is expressed.”

He said Almighty Allah has said: “Say: ‘If you do love Allah, follow me: Allah will love you and forgive your sins.’” Muslims have a duty to believe in the Prophet (pbuh) as the servant and messenger of Allah, who was sent as a guide to the entire universe, Al-Asheikh said.

It is the duty of Muslims to love and respect him. They should also defend him against those who misinterpret his teachings, the atheists who deny him, and those who abuse or mock him. These are the duties of Muslims who truly love the Prophet (pbuh), the sheikh said according to the report published in AN.

Fully agree too!

See how this has been used by Bohras to celebrate the 'Milads' of Imams and Dais ........... once a wrong precedent is set, it is used as bench mark to continue adding to that precedent and a time comes when original precedent is lost, only 'copies' remain - this we can now see how Bohras celebrate Eid Milad-un-Nabi as compared to 'Milad' of Imam and more importantly Dais .............. and now for Muffy we celebrate TWO, one coconut and one cake ...........

Saudi blogger to be publicly flogged on charges he insulted Islam

•Raif Badawi was sentenced last May to 10 years in prison and 1,000 lashes
•His website Free Saudi Liberals is now closed
•Badawi ‘being used as an example’ in crackdown on reform calls

A Saudi blogger who was sentenced last May to 10 years in prison and 1,000 lashes will be publicly flogged for the first time after Friday prayers outside a mosque in the Red Sea coastal city of Jeddah, according to a person close to his case.

Raif Badawi was sentenced on charges related to accusations that he insulted Islam on a liberal online forum he had created. He was also ordered by the Jeddah criminal court to pay a fine of 1m Saudi riyals, or about $266,000.

Rights groups and activists say his case is part of a wider clampdown on dissent throughout the kingdom. Officials have increasingly blunted calls for reforms since the region’s 2011 Arab Spring upheaval.

Badawi has been held since mid-2012, and his Free Saudi Liberals website is now closed. The case has drawn condemnation from rights groups.

He called from prison and informed his family of the flogging, due Friday, said a person close to the case. The person, who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity for fear of government reprisal, said Badawi was “being used as an example for others to see”.

Badawi’s lawyer Waleed Abul-Khair was sentenced in July to 15 years imprisonment and barred from travelling for another 15 years after being found guilty by an anti-terrorism court of “undermining the regime and officials”, “inciting public opinion” and “insulting the judiciary”.

Amnesty International has said that Badawi is to receive 50 lashes once a week for 20 weeks.

“It is horrifying to think that such a vicious and cruel punishment should be imposed on someone who is guilty of nothing more than daring to create a public forum for discussion and peacefully exercising the right to freedom of expression,” said Philip Luther, Amnesty’s Middle East and north Africa director.

Badawi was originally sentenced in 2013 to seven years in prison and 600 lashes in relation to the charges, but after an appeal, the judge stiffened the punishment. Following his arrest, his wife and children left the kingdom for Canada.

When the Prophet of Islam, and Hazarat Abu Bakar were pelted and ran from Taif, was there a fatwa against the people of Taif?

These Mullahs will pay dearly for their fatwas. If they loved the Prophet SAW, they would do what the Prophet S.A.W. did, i.e. left it to Allah SWT to do His work.

These Mullahs or Sheikhs are worst than animals. May be they should try only one slash on themselves and see if it is fair to mitigate this kind of cruel punishment to another human being!

It is sickening!!!!

These Fatwa promulgators are themselves totally ignorant about the true spirit of Islam. Why pay attention to them. You all may know that fatwas are not binding to other Muslims. Fatwas are personal opinions. Just that. IGNORE these subversive fatwas by IGNORANTs. God save us all.

'If plane stops still in air, China would come towards Earth,' claims Saudi cleric

A Saudi cleric has claimed and reasoned his theory that Earth is stationary and does not revolves around the Sun.

In a recent video, when a student questioned Sheikh Bandar al-Khaibari about whether the Earth was stationary or moving, he responded saying "stationary and does not move," the Express Tribune reported.

He further supported his bizarre theory by quoting some clerics, presenting some religious statements, and then argued by saying "If a plane stops still in the air, China would be coming towards Earth in case the Earth rotates in one direction."

"If the Earth rotates in the opposite direction, the plane would never reach China, because China is also rotating," he added.

The weird statements sparked a wave of social media remarks across the globe so much, that a new hashtag "#cleric_rejects_rotation_of_Earth" started trending on Twitter.

While one user said "made so laugh must be joke hello we are in 21st century they have proved that long time ago sorry u late!" another added "Now we know the source of Saudi #moonsighting problem, #cleric_rejects_rotation_of_Earth."

A user joked writing "Now I understand why women not allowed to drive cars" while in an interesting remark, one user tweeted "What a coincidence that this would occur on Galileo's birthday!" (ANI)

Egyptian Fatwa: Women who swim in the ocean guilty of adultery

India Today published on Nov. 28, 2013 that a listing has recently been compiled in Egypt of some of the more puritanical Islamic fatwa's issued during the presidency of now deposed leader Mohamed Morsi.

During Morsi's brief stint as president, the Muslim Brotherhood and the equally violently straight laced Salafists issued blatantly anti-women fatwas on a regular basis.

Arguably leading the list was the fatwa (Islamic religious ruling) issued that noted the Arab word for "sea" is masculine, therefore, if and when sea water comes into contact with a married woman's pelvic area, she literally committed adultery.

According to the fatwa, she becomes an 'adulteress' and should be punished.

The standard Sharia Law punishment for adultery for a woman is slowly stoning her to death.

As India Today reported, "According to the report, the fatwas issued by both groups (the Muslim Brotherhood and Salafists) regard women as strange creatures who are created solely for sex. They considered the voices of women, their looks and presence outside the walls of their homes an 'offence'. Some even went as far as to consider women as a whole offensive."

Other officially issued Fatwas of note include:

A prohibition on women "eating certain vegetables or even touching cucumbers or bananas", due to their phallic imagery which could sexually tempt women.

Women were ordered "turn off the air conditioners at home in the absence of their husbands as this could indicate to a neighbor that the woman is at home alone and any of them could commit adultery with her."

Upon reaching the age of 10, girls should be married "to prevent them from deviating from the right path."

A marriage would be annulled if a married couple engages in sexual congress without any clothes on.

In order to bypass the Islamic law that women shouldn't be in public with males they weren't married to or related to, that women could "breastfeed male acquaintances thereby making them relatives and justifying their mixed company".

Numerous Fatwas were authorized to use women as human shields during moments of violence.

Seen as pagan images, Fatwas were issued that "advocated the destruction of the pyramids and sphinx."

Sanctioning the execution of anyone who protested against then-President Mohamed Morsi.

Officially forbad Muslims from greeting any Christians

I can guarantee that these idiotic fatwas were not issued by anyone with even a basic understanding of the Arabic language. This is simply a conspiracy to malign Islam and muslim scholars. The reporter and the newspaper are probably on the CIA payroll.

Top Saudi Sheikh issues bizarre fatwa allowing men to EAT their wives if they are hungry

The scarcely believable announcement from cleric Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah has outraged human rights campaigners

Men in Saudi Arabia "can eat their wives if they are suffering severe hunger" under a bizarre new fatwa reportedly announced by a religious leader in the country.

Saudi Arabian grand mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah allegedly issued the guidelines to allow a husband to eat his wife's body parts in extreme circumstances.

The cleric is reported to have said the ruling represents the "sacrifice of women and obedience to her husband" - but campaigners are understandably outraged.

The announcement has sparked major concerns about the already well-documented poor treatment of women in the country.

A statement reportedly from the cleric's office said: “A fatwa attributed to the Mufti of Saudi Arabia, Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah, which allows a man to eat his wife or parts of her body if the husband was afflicted with a severe hunger, raised concern and debate over social media since yesterday evening.

"The fatwa is interpreted as evidence of the sacrifice of women and obedience to her husband and her desire for the two to become one."

The controversial Muslim leader has previously called on all churches to be destroyed under Islamic law.

But his latest declaration is yet to appear on his official website and no confirmation of its legitimacy has been made.

Women's rights in Saudi Arabia are notoriously scarce.

Until 2011 they were banned from voting or running in public elections and earlier this year all female television presenters were told they must adhere to a strict Islamic dress code.

The country has an abysmal human rights record, including against women, and females are banned from going anywhere in the country, or even opening a bank account, without a male chaperon.

Punishments for breaking such trivial laws include public lashings and humiliations.

"can eat their wives if they are suffering severe hunger"
The cleric is referring to the kind of eating that the woman enjoys.

Saudi Arabia: Halal Sex Shops to Sell 'Islamically Approved' Adult Toys for Muslims in Mecca

A halal sex shop that will sell "Islamically approved" adult products exclusively to Muslims will be opened in the Saudi city of Mecca.

According to a report published in Alyaoum24, an Arabic news portal, the shops will "strictly cater to Muslim customers in Mecca" and are being opened after due consultation with Saudi clerics, who have approved it as 'halal'.

Abdelaziz Aouragh, who is the owner of a Dutch halal sex shop called El Asira, will open the halal sex shop in Mecca. El Asira is famous for its sensual oils.

Aouragh, a Moroccan Muslim, told AFP that he was told by a Saudi Arabian cleric that opening of a "halal" sex shop would lead to "the improvement of the sexual relationship between husband and wife".

German company Beate Uhse will also be working with El Asira with regard to the adult store in Mecca. Beate Uhse is listed among the largest providers of "sexciting" products in Europe, and Aouragh would be selling the 18 "Islamically approved" toys in his store.

The store will, however, not be selling vibrators as they are not approved by Islam.

"Our products do include items that increase feelings of sensuality and improve the atmosphere between the couple in the sexual relationship between them," Aouragh said.

Contrary to popular assumptions that Islam is repressive about sex, there are ample dictates in Quran and hadith (a record of the sayings of the Prophet Mohammad and his companions) that encourage sex within the confines of marriage, Hamza Yusuf, an American Islamic scholar and co-founder of Zaytuna College in Berkeley, told Foreign Policy.

There are also instances in Quran where Prophet Mohammad tells men not to leave their wives for more than six months so as to avoid sexual neglect, and there are even some well-known references to foreplay in the hadith, he added.

The first halal sex shop in a predominantly Muslim country opened in Turkey in 2013.

Saudi beheads 80th person this year

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia on Tuesday carried out its 80th beheading of the year, edging closer to the 87 executions it carried out during all of 2014.

The interior ministry said a Saudi citizen, Rabie al-Sai'ari, had been convicted of trying to smuggle hashish into the kingdom.

He was executed in Najran, a district on the border with Yemen, a ministry statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency said.

The ministry has cited deterrence as a reason for its use of the death penalty despite criticism from human rights watchdogs.

Amnesty International ranked Saudi Arabia among the world's top three executioners of 2014.

On a visit to Riyadh this month, French President Francois Hollande said that capital punishment "should be banned", and his country is campaigning around the world for its abolition.

Drug trafficking, rape, murder, apostasy and armed robbery are all punishable by death under Saudi Arabia's strict version of Islamic sharia law.

Wanted, Executioners: Saudi Arabia Places Ads Online

The vacancies were advertised on the ministry's website in the "religious jobs" section.

Last year, Saudi Arabia executed 87 people, according to an AFP tally, ranking it third in the world for use of the death penalty
.

Riyadh: Saudi Arabia advertised vacancies for eight executioners Tuesday after beheading nearly as many people since the start of the year as it did in the whole of 2014.

The civil service ministry said that no qualifications were necessary and that applicants would be exempted from the usual entrance exams.

It said that as well as beheadings, the successful candidates would be expected to carry out amputations ordered by the courts under the kingdom's strict version of Islamic sharia law.

Amputation of one or both hands is a routine penalty for theft.

Drug trafficking, rape, murder, apostasy and armed robbery are all punishable by death.

Most executions are carried out by beheading, but a few are carried out by firing squad, stoning or crucifixion.

All are carried out in public and video footage sometimes appears on the Internet despite a ban on filming.

In January, gruesome footage was posted of a Burmese woman protesting her innocence before being beheaded by a swordsman on a public street in the Muslim holy city of Mecca.

Ignoring her screams, the white-robed executioner forces her to lie down on the ground, near a pedestrian crossing, then severs her head with a curved sword.

The official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) said that Layla bint Abdul Mutaleb Bassim had been sentenced to death for killing her husband's six-year-old daughter.

Already this year, it has put 85 people to death in what human rights group Amnesty International has described as a "macabre spike".

On Tuesday, a convicted serial rapist of young girls was beheaded in Riyadh, SPA reported.

The interior ministry says the death penalty is an important deterrent.

But on a visit to Riyadh this month, French President Francois Hollande said capital punishment "should be banned".

Saudi Arabia: Save Ali from Beheading and Crucifixion!

1,338,664 have signed. Let's get to 1,500,000

Saudi Arabia is about to behead a 21-year-old man and then crucify him to display his body in public. This same country was just chosen to head a U.N. Human Rights Council panel. If it weren’t so serious this would be funny!

Ali Mohammed al-Nimr was arrested when he was 17 for participating in demonstrations against the government, then he was convicted under torture. But his case is not an exception in the kingdom -- Saudi Arabia has executed more than 100 people this year, that’s a rate of one every 2 days!

France has already requested that Saudis stop this execution, but the US, Germany, and the UK also have very cosy relationships with the regime. The best way to get urgent action is to channel our outrage to these leaders who can persuade their Saudi allies. Sign up now to save Ali, and then stop this human rights farce, his execution could happen anytime.

Chess forbidden in Islam, rules Saudi mufti, but issue not black and white

Game likely to take on status of minor vices such as music after Sheikh Abdulaziz al-Sheikh says it encourages gambling

Saudi Arabia’s grand mufti has ruled that chess is forbidden in Islam, saying it encourages gambling and is a waste of time.

Sheikh Abdulaziz al-Sheikh was answering a question on a television show in which he issues fatwas in response to viewers’ queries on everyday religious matters.

He said chess was “included under gambling” and was “a waste of time and money and a cause for hatred and enmity between players”.

Sheikh justified the ruling by referring to the verse in the Qur’an banning “intoxicants, gambling, idolatry and divination”. It is not clear when the fatwa was delivered.

Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, Iraq’s supreme Shia religious authority, has previously issued rulings forbidding chess.

After the 1979 Islamic revolution, playing chess was banned in public in Iran and declared haram, or forbidden, by senior clerics because it was associated with gambling. But in 1988, Iran’s then supreme leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, lifted the ban and said it was permissible as long as it was not a means of gambling. Iran now has an active confederation for playing chess and sends players to international games.

Moves to suppress chess are likely to have come as a surprise to the seventh-century Muslims who conquered Persia and adopted the game before exporting it to Europe.

Muslim scholars tend to place chess, a skill-based game, in a different category from games of chance, such as dice, but frown upon it if it distracts a person from performing the five daily prayers. Placing bets under any circumstances is forbidden.

The region’s clerical establishment figures are no strangers to seemingly strange fatwas, or edicts. In the early 2000s, Saudi and other clerics issued a fatwa against the popular Pokémon franchise, and during football’s 2010 World Cup in South Africa, religious scholars in the United Arab Emirates said that using the widely reviled vuvuzela instrument was forbidden if the sound produced was above 100 decibels.

It is unlikely that Sheikh’s ruling will be enforced, and more plausible that chess will be relegated to the status of other minor vices, such as music, which many in the clerical establishment frown upon. Moreover, since the ruling was in response to a specific question, it was probably meant as an advisory opinion rather than a formal edict.
