Former Indian Attorney General Goolam Essaji Vahanvati died Tuesday afternoon in Mumbai, lawyers who knew him said. He was 65 years old. As attorney general, a post he held from 2009 to 2014, Mr. Vahanvati represented India’s government in high-profile cases such as the “Coalgate” investigation of alleged corruption in the distribution of mining rights.The Indian Supreme Court ruled last week that all coal-mining licenses issued since 1993 are illegal because they weren’t issued in a transparent manner. During his time in office, Mr. Vahanvati also appeared as a witness in proceedings before a special Central Bureau of Investigation court related to the allegedly fraudulent allocation of cellphone bandwidth.He was asked to answer questions on his role in advising the government in the run up to what became one of the biggest scandals involving the Congress party-led government he served.Mr. Vahanvati was not found to have committed any wrong-doing.Mr. Vahanvati belonged to the small and close-knit Dawoodi Bohra community — a Muslim sect with followers around the world. Born in Mumbai on May 7, 1949, he started his legal career in 1972.Before serving as attorney general, he was India’s solicitor general from 2004 to 2009 and prior to that, held the position of advocate general of the western state of Maharashtra.
