Open letter to Obama: Modi and the Sangh Parivar have a lot in common with you

'The RSS follows your theory of liberation. And our prime minister too believes in inaction in the face of injustice.'

Dear Barack Obama,

It was gracious of you to accept Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s invitation to be the chief guest at India’s Republic Day celebrations on January 26. This was the day on which India adopted its Constitution, which provided for a democratic system of governance and spelt out the fundamental rights of its people. Could there have been a better backdrop for the heads of the world’s oldest and the largest democracies to engage with each other?

This backdrop appears particularly appropriate because of the tumult the two democracies are witnessing. Partly, the tumult has reached a disturbing pitch because of your and Modi’s reluctance to thwart those who challenge some of the fundamental principles of democracy.

America and tumult? Yes, Mr Obama, the tumult referred to pertains to the killing of unarmed black people by white policemen, the failure of grand juries to indict the killers, and the spilling out of people on the streets demanding justice.

Power-drunk bullies

As the world’s principal troubleshooter, you may not have had the time to read the headlines emerging from India. Therefore, you perhaps need to be told that there are outfits in India planning to reconvert Christians and Muslims to Hinduism. You shake your head and wonder, what is the crib about? People have the right to change their religion, don’t they?

Oh no, the consent of those who are to be converted will not necessarily be taken into consideration. As is alleged to have happened in Agra recently, affidavits will be furnished to prove their intent to convert, most likely secured through offers of material benefit or threats. In good many cases, we will not even know whether those proselytised were, to begin with, Christians or Muslims.

Bullies of all countries tend to go berserk as soon as they smell power. In America, bullies wear police uniforms and carry licensed guns. In India, they belong to outfits owing allegiance to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, which defines itself as a cultural organisation but is in reality the power behind India’s ruling party, the Bharatiya Janata Party. Yes, you are right, the RSS is to the BJP what Sonia Gandhi was to Manmohan Singh. It is the habit of the RSS-affiliated outfits to torment the religious minorities as soon as the BJP comes to power at the Centre.

So a month or so before your scheduled arrival in India to watch the enthralling Republic Day parade, an RSS affiliate was busy planning to swoop down on Aligarh on Christmas to reconvert Christians, of whom there are just 10,000 there. Many of them are Dalits, whose status in India is about the same as that of black people in America. But lately, it has been decided to postpone the reconversion programme. Postponed, not cancelled, mind you.

Following in US's footsteps

You perhaps want to ask: why does the RSS want to convert people to Hinduism? Well, it has been deemed that they were forcibly converted to Christianity, and are pining to reconvert to Hinduism. Deemed? Yes, just the way your predecessor, George Bush, and you determined that the Iraqis and Libyans wished to be liberated from the dictators who ruled them.

We in India are free, but our minds remain colonised. Perhaps the RSS affiliate has borrowed the theory of liberation from Bush and you. And now our prime minister has taken to emulating your silence and inaction in the wake of deeds unjust and incendiary.

“Me, of all people, silent and indifferent?”

Unfortunately for you, Mr Obama, a large segment of the American population thinks you should have visited the towns to commiserate with the communities whose members were shot dead in cold blood. You did not visit Staten Island, where Eric Garner died even though he kept bleating he could not breathe when placed in a chokehold by a white police officer. Nor did you go to Ferguson, where an 18-year-old was shot dead. Nor to Cleveland, where a white police officer mistook the pellet gun the 12-year-old Tamir Rice was carrying for a real one and pumped bullets into him.

A neutrality that harms

Did you not decide against visiting these towns because you thought you ought to appear neutral, to not be perceived to be siding with blacks, to not incur the displeasure of the conservative white America? There are many legal experts who feel your administration did not send a strong message to prosecutors to have the guilty officers indicted by the juries. It is the prosecutors who decide what evidence jury members see and hear.

Not surprisingly then, the streets of America burst out in protest, prompting you to speak with the eloquence you are renowned for. You said the Garner case “speaks to the larger issues that we’ve been talking about now for the last week, the last month, the last year and, sadly, for decades, and that is the concern on the part of too many minority communities that law enforcement is not… dealing with them in a fair way… It’s time for us to make more progress than we’ve made. I’m not interested in talk; I’m interested in action.”

A lot many minorities in India would have thought you were speaking of their feelings about the Indian state, its brazen biased behaviour against them.

Whether or not action in America would be forthcoming is beside the point. It might still be a good idea for you to persuade Modi to borrow your words for a speech he could deliver in the context of religious conversion in India. You see, Modi did not even refer to the threats to convert Christians in the December edition of the Mann ki baat programme, which he conducts every month on the All India Radio, but before ending it he was thoughtful enough to wish everyone Happy Christmas!

Don’t you say, “It is an example of chutzpah.” It is a word every Bollywood fan understands courtesy the film Haider.

Who cares for non-Hindus

You perhaps do not believe Modi has it in him to remain silent, having witnessed firsthand the manner in which he rocked the NRI audience in New York recently. Glance at his record – he did not utter a word as his party activists went around in Uttar Pradesh objecting to Hindu-Muslim relationships, believing it is jihad through other means. A locality in Delhi rioted and he remained silent.

To think, we used to call Manmohan Singh “Maunmohan” or “Silent-Mohan”.

Oh yes, he spoke to his party MPs this week, but, ironically, only to ask them to remain silent, to not cross the Rubicon, to not divert the nation’s attention from development and good governance through their intemperate remarks. But, hell, there was not a word on conversion.

Modi’s compulsions to keep silent are inverse of yours: he does not need the votes of Muslims and Christians who, anyway, do not support him. He does not want to alienate diehard Hindus whose hero he has been ever since Gujarat erupted in 2002, which inspired your country to impose a visa ban on him. It is also possible he does not wish to anger the RSS bosses who marshalled their formidable network to help him win the 2014 general elections.

Taking AFSPA to America

Hailing from a minority community you became president and the plight of blacks has not diminished. Modi is from the majority community and the fears of the minority community have only grown. Either way, as you can see, the minorities always get it in the neck.

These aspects of democracy you and he can discuss on Republic Day. You will likely advise him to not rely unduly on preset agendas. You will cite your own experience in implementing your promise to get American troops back from abroad. “Mr Modi,” you will say in a crisp voice, “Look at the mess in Iraq, Syria and Libya, not to speak of the badlands of Afghanistan.”

You will say that despite America staging an economic recovery of sorts, its people are sending Republicans to the Senate and the House of Representatives. So throwing an arm around Modi, you will suggest that governance and development might not take him anywhere, for its gains take time to trickle down to people. Then, in a crestfallen voice, you will add, “I think I may have lost the trust of those who were most enthusiastic about my victory. Yes, my black mates, my fellow white travellers.”

All this could caution Modi, but also amuse him no end. So he might decide to explain to you the provisions of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act and suggest you have it legislated in America too. With AFSPA in America, white police officers can remain trigger-happy. No compulsion to try them in court, no need for grand juries – and, therefore, no verdict to provoke the Americans to come out on the streets.

Silence and inaction are the best cure for all social illnesses. Mr Obama, you cannot understand this because you do not have a third term in office to vie for. So that is why, it can be assumed, you finally spoke. By contrast, there is no bar on the number of times Modi could become prime minister – and so, we assume, he will remain silent.

Mr Obama, hope you have a great trip to India. Oh yes, hope you deliver a great speech in India.

Ajaz Ashraf is a journalist from Delhi. His book The Hour Before Dawn will be published by HarperCollins in December-end.

TSR Committee Report-An Assault on the Environment in Favour of Big Business

NewsClick interviewed D. Raghunandan, President of All India Peoples Science Network, on TSR Subramanian Committee report. According to Raghunandan, the report is an attempt to dismantle the existing legislative provisions and weaken the environmental protection mechanisms. The report also suggests the removal of judicial review of environmental clearances in order to help big business. This report is an attempt to extend to entire India the Gujarat model, in which environmental pollution control measures were completely jettisoned. This abandoning of all pollution control measures is what has made Vapi, an industrial town in Gujarat, the most critically polluted area in the country.

Conversion: Gujarat becomes the hottest

Ahmedabad
Though it is very chilled atmosphere in Gujarat, but RSS along with its sister organisations like VHP, Bajrang Dal are leaving no stone unturned to boil this Hindutva Laboratory state with continuous conversion plans. Now RSS would show its strength at a three days workers shibir from January 2-4 just before some days of vibrant summit which will be held from Jan.7-13 in Gandhinagar, state capital. Before this Karyakarta shibir, RSS, along with Valsad District Dharma Jagaran Manch, plans to convert 400 to 500 Christians to Hinduism in Piprod village in the tribal dominated Dharampur taluka of Valsad on Christmas.

So, Gujarat in the first week of New Year, 2015 will see Vibrant Summit V/S. RSS's mega show of supremacy. Vibrant Summit will deliver the message of development of state, nation and world while this RSS meet will go for Hindutva. What a strange..MR. Modiji. Are you listening? One can see it as battle between Modi and RSS, alias RSS, Bhagwat and Togdiya.

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and senior leader from saffron outfits will be present in Shibir which will be turned into Sant Sammelan. As Gujarat is the hub of Hinduva, about more than 50000 people are expected to join this Hinduism show. In this Shibir it is expected that ultimatum may be given to Modi government for Ram Mandir at Ayodhya. Pressure will be built up even for abolition of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir. VHP has done a survey in the city and identified 145 pockets, which they claim are ‘vulnerable’ to conversion by other religions. Dharmendra Bhavani, a senior state VHP leader (Dharma Prasar) said, “We have surveyed 145 areas in the city where labourers and poor stay (Sewa Vasti). Such pockets are in places like Amraiwadi, Lambha, Narol, Saraspur etc. Christian missionaries frequented these areas, but they have disappeared after we began our activities. Our programme has already been launched in 68 out of 145 pockets.”

How close are we to the promised ‘acche din’? P. Sainath, delivering the Alladi Memorial lecture at the University of Hyderabad, demolishes all claims of development with staggering figures of what happens in rural India in 100 days. All But One BJP Candidates Lost Security Deposit in Kashmir Valley

The Bharatiya Janata Party suffered humiliating defeat in the Kashmir Valley with 33 of its 34 Assembly candidates losing their security deposit in the elections.

The party had fielded 34 candidates out of the 46 constituencies in the Valley hoping to give a tough fight to rival candidates, but they failed to secure even their own deposits
.

Even the party ‘s Muslim face in the Valley, Dr Hina Shafi Bhat, who was given considerable publicity and importance by the BJP failed to save her security desposit. Far from winning the seat, as she was projected to, Bhat got only 1359 votes losing the Amirakadal seat to the Peoples Democratic Party.

Hina, who had sparked a controversy by allegedly slapping an election officer during polling which she denied later, was banking on her father’s clout who was once a legislator with the National Conference. However, she failed to impress the voters.

Moti Koul, the BJP’s candidate from Habba Kadal in Srinagar district, was the only one who managed to save his security deposit. He was contesting from the constituency which recorded only 21 per cent voter turnout.

Koul was also under the threat of losing his security deposit till the migrant votes were counted, which propelled him from seventh position to the runners-up.

He lost to Shamima Firdous of National Conference(NC) by a margin of over 2,000 votes.

The other BJP candidates were way behind in most of the constituencies in the Valley from their nearest rivals, as was evident from the Election Commission data.

It is important to mention here that as per the rules, a candidate loses his deposit if the number of votes he/she gets is less than one-sixth of the total valid votes cast in the constituency.

BJP’s Shopian candidate Javed Ahmad Qadri managed to get over 3,300 votes but lost the security deposit due to the higher voter turnout in the constituency in south Kashmir.

Similarly Masood-ul-Hassan, fighting from Hazratbal constituency, polled 2,635 votes but he too could not save his deposit.

Other Prominent BJP nominees who got over 1,000 votes were Zubair Ahmad Wani from Batmaloo (1,304) and Dharakshan Indrabi from Sonawar (1,100) in terms of number of votes polled.

In another major embarrassment, the BJP candidate from Zadibal Constituency Neelam Gash received only 360 votes, fortifying her deposit.–

Kahan gaye woh achche din?

The Modi government is just continuing old ideas with a new twist -- of interference in matters where the State should not venture, says Mango Indian.

Recently, a Reuters article quoting unnamed government sources said India had slashed its already meagre health budget by 20 percent. It created a flutter -- even The New York Times picked up on it in a strongly worded editorial -- and on social media defenders of the government as well as health beat reporters were at pains to point out that the story was not true.

These were mid-year revised spending estimates that had been slashed, they said. And not only health, many ministries had not been able to spend the funds allocated to them. It was related to fund absorption. And this was not the first time it had happened.

Lost in the jargon over revised estimates and plan outlay is the fact that this government is no different from previous governments in underutilising already paltry monies in key social sectors.

If the health ministry does not know where to spend money on, maybe we can pitch in with ideas? Because I am sure everyone above a certain age has at least one hospital horror story to narrate.

Despite the Swatchh Bharat hullaballoo, the water and sanitation ministry spent just 29 per cent of what it was given for the first six months.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi got a historic mandate, on that there is no doubt. But as a new year dawns on India, not much has changed except for the loony fringe having a field day.

Filmmakers say the government is interfering in films.

Scientists say the government is interfering in science.

Historians say the government is distorting history.

Educationists say the government is interfering in education.

The Supreme Court says the government is not earnest enough in cleaning up the Ganga.

The Reserve Bank of India governor says the government has got its priorities wrong
(and for that Make for India remark, many believe the expert economist’s job is on the line, even though inflation is one of the few things the government has been able to control).

After opposing the Goods and Services Tax tooth and nail in the Opposition, this government now touts it as the biggest economic reform since 1947.

After taking the United Progressive Alliance government to task for ordinances, the government issues ordinance after ordinance.

After opposing Section 66A of the Information Technology Act -- the law that enables arrest over Facebook posts and suchlike -- as unconstitutional and opposed to freedom of speech as Opposition, this government now says the law is well meant.

After Modi declaring in campaign speeches that he will bring back black money and every poor person will get Rs 15 lakh from that, his lieutenant the newly-exonerated Amit Shah says it was just a way of saying things.

So, Prime Minister Modi, where is your promised ‘development’, and 'achche din’?

Was it meant only for Maya Kodnani, your former Gujarat minister convicted of mass murder and yet out on bail for months?

Was it meant only for Amit Shah, your able lieutenant against whom the Central Bureau of Investigation has dropped its own case?

Was it meant only for your friend Gautam Adani, who is bagging contracts in the countries you travel to?

Was it only meant for your party colleagues and past ideologues, who are being given government honours by the kilo?

Was it only meant for a murderer named Nathuram Godse?

Did you promise of ‘minimum government’ mean only hands off continuation of old policies like Aadhaar? Have you ever tried e-mailing the Aadhaar authorities and getting a reply?

Did your promise of ‘maximum governance’ only mean telling the people what films they should not see, what art they cannot exhibit, what books they cannot read, what religions they cannot follow, what food they cannot eat, and drumming in the real and downright-loony-bin-imaginary accomplishments of ancient India?

Gujarat cops make 'terrorists' wear skullcaps in mock drill

Following intelligence reports that two high-profile events of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas and Vibrant Gujarat Investors Summit in state capital Gandhinagar could be a target of terror attacks, anti-terror mock drills are being carried out across Gujarat.

In the diamond hub of Surat, the drill to check preparedness of the force on Tuesday ran into controversy, however, when some persons posing as terrorists in the drill were shown wearing skullcaps. The incident came under heavy criticism with the Congress mounting an attack on the state government, claiming it an administrative failure.

A video of the drill shows five policemen holding three dummy terrorists who are wearing skullcaps. The trio was also shown lying down, while policemen keep a watch on them. The video ends with the men posing as terrorists being bundled into a police jeep after being captured alive.

A MUST READ ARTICLE WHICH EXPOSES MODI AND HIS FUTURE AGENDA

“Triumph of the Will”: Narendra Modi, the RSS and the “Big Lie” propaganda technique

India’s new Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a member of both the Bharatiya Janata Party (“BJP”) and its neo-Nazi paramilitary “ideological fountainhead”, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (“RSS”).

Nevertheless, a series of problems have already arisen, which provides a revealing insight into the nature of Modi’s regime:

For example, as recently summarised in the Hindustan Times, (a) an RSS national executive member has called for India’s intelligence agencies to terminate their investigations of multiple RSS terrorist attacks, (b) senior members of Modi’s new national government are calling for the termination of affirmative action initiatives for India’s religious minorities, with the new Minister for Minority Affairs making the bizarre claim that Muslims are not a minority in India despite the fact that they are only 14% of the total population, and (c) it turns out that Modi’s newly-appointed education minister falsified her own educational qualifications in affidavits.

Shock defeat for BJP in Chhattisgarh civic elections

In its worst ever defeat in Chhattisgarh — its first electoral loss since coming to power at the Centre — the BJP on Sunday suffered heavy losses in the municipal elections. The party managed to win just four of the 10 municipal corporations, 16 of 39 municipalities and 37 of 105 nagar panchayats.

In 2009, the BJP had won six of the nine municipal corporations, 18 of 32 municipalities and 71 of the 127 nagar panchayats.

The party’s defeat was spread across the state, as it lost in the tribal zones of north Surguja and south Bastar, central plains, rural centres as well as the biggest urban seat of capital Raipur.

The results mark a huge gain for the Congress, which won only one of the 11 Lok Sabha seats in Chhattisgarh last May. On Sunday, the Congress won four municipal corporations, 16 municipalities and 50 nagar panchayats — its 2009 tally was three municipal corporations, 12 municipalities and 44 nagar panchayats.

The results come as a major blow for Chief Minister Raman Singh, who had personally led the campaign through the state. Almost in every seat, his face was projected instead of the local candidate. All local TV channels covered him live, and the BJP splurged on the campaign, even as the Congress seemed invisible.

The BJP even conceded the Raipur mayoral seat — home constituencies of ministers Brijmohan Agrawal and Rajesh Moonat and seven-time BJP MP Ramesh Bais — to the Congress. The entire BJP leadership, including the CM, had undertaken a massive campaign in Raipur. A fortnight before the elections, party president Amit Shah also visited Raipur.

The state recorded a turnout of 77.77 per cent as against 69.47 per cent during last year’s Lok Sabha polls, indicating that people came out in large numbers to vote against the ruling government. While the voting percentage for men was 78.02 per cent, for women it was 77.55 per cent.

Zafar Sareshwala, a convicted car dealer, whose mother tongue is Gujarati and not known to have any truck with the world of academia is appointed the Chancellor of Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad for his proximity to Modi

Reactions to Modi rewarding his long time aide Zafar Sareshwala

Zafar Sareshwala, notorious for siding with Modi, for being face of Modi's "Muslim" support, which Modi badly needed ever since the 2002 Gujarat Anti-Muslim pogrom, has been appointed Chancellor of Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad.

Sareshwala, was fined by The Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). They even cancelled his company’s broker registration, Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) said, "Parsoli is not a fit and proper person to act as an intermediary in the Indian securities market".

It is stupid to think that this must have been the only "reward" he must have got for being a Modi sycophant, but this "reward" hurts hard. In July 2014 Economic Times reported how Sareshwala's brother built a Rs 200 crore business in 5 years.

The Ministry of Human Resource and Development which oversees educational institutions in India has been continuously attempting or the other of saffronisation of education or displaying blatant interference in their functioning. Some see Sareshwala would be used to help this agenda of the BJP government. Others think sending Sareshwala to Hyderabad, bastion of the Owaisi brothers, may be to make political in-roads into their solid vote-bank.

Here are some reactions of netizens while Maulana Azad must be turning in his grave:

Urdu ka janaza hai, Zara dhoom say nikley. New Courses to be introduced in Maulana Azad National Urdu University:

1. Certificate course in Tehseen-e-Narendra Modi.
2. Diploma in Mubalagha Ameezi.
3. Diploma in Chaploosi.
4. BA in Ilm-e-Iqtesadiyate Modi.
5. MBBS in Amal e Vedic Jarrahat.
6. MA in Qatl-e-Urdu.
7. MSc in Jaded Uloom e Zulm o Amiriyyat.
8. MSc in Shuddhi o Sanghathan.
9. PhD in Maddah Sarai e Narendra Modi.
10. PhD in Tark-e- Ahl o Ayyal.

Horrendous.. save India, save the future generation — Shabnam Hashmi, Delhi

Corrupt businessman Sareshwala qualifying as sycophant of Modi made Chancellor of public funded Maulana Azad National Urdu University. Modi govt's assault on education expands! — Meera Ahmad, Delhi

5 Takeaways from Sareshwala appointment:

1. Loyalty to the great leader and not merit counts under the current dispensation.
2. The government is in no mood to placate the fears of the Muslim community.
3. The government us determined to show who is in control and wants to rub it in your face.
4. The government is not serious about promoting Urdu.
5. The appointment of a political wheeler and dealer will encourage even more corruption at MANUU
.
— Ayub Khan

Our attitude to higher education and public institutions on full display. Both are for doling out personal favours, but we want performance of international standard.—Padmaja Shaw

I won't be surprised if Salman Khan is made the Vice Chancellor of AMU by the fools !!!!
Zafar Sareshwala, one of the most corrupt businessman has been appointed as Chancellor)) of Maulana Azad National Urdu University (btw, Zafar Sareshwala can't even speak in Urdu language) !!!!

So the game that HRD Ministry has been playing with education system reaches directly campus of a minority institution. Naming of Modi’s loyalist as chief of top Urdu university angers activists

The HRD ministry was out to saffronise education in the country and Sareshwala might now be used in the top minority university to achieve this goal of the Modi government.

The appointment of a Gujarat-based businessman who is seen as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s face of ‘Muslim’ support as Chancellor of the prestigious Maulana Azad National Urdu University (Manuu), Hyderabad, has drawn sharp reactions from community leaders and activists.

Reacting to the announcement by the federal Ministry of Human Resource Development naming Zafar Sareshwala, CEO & MD of Parsoli Corporation Ltd. to the plum post, the Gujarat chapter of the All India Milli Council said that the decision was a mockery of the Urdu language as the new incumbent was not an Urdu scholar and had no notable educational background.

Abdul Hafiz Lakhani, council leader and editor of the first national Muslim Gujarati fortnightly, also said that the HRD ministry was out to saffronise education in the country and Sareshwala might now be used in the top minority university to achieve this goal of the Modi government.

Vadodara-based social activist J.S. Bandukwala, a retired physics professor of the famed M.S. University whose home was attacked by Hindu rioters in 2002, said that the appointment of a diploma holder in mechanical engineering to the hallowed post was made at the behest of the Modi government but the political appointee was a square peg in a round hole.

Pratik Sinha, who runs human rights organisations like the Truth of Gujarat and Jan Sangharsh Manch and has taken up the cudgels for the Muslim riot survivors, said Modi had rewarded a sycophant like Sareshwala for spreading lies in the country on his behalf during the Lok Sabha poll campaigns.

Gujarat High Court advocate Iqbal Masud Khan said he was surprised how a businessman with practically no background in education could be named the chancellor of a public-funded university.

“Such persons will not only spell the doom for the beautiful Urdu language but will also make the younger generation forget the contribution of Maulana Azad to the country’s freedom struggle and framing of a secular education policy as the federal education minister,” said Khan, who has fought the authorities to preserve heritage in the historical city of Ahmedabad.

Khan, a former newspaper journalist, also pointed out that Sareshwala was a staunch Tabligh Jamat member which, he said, had hidden sympathies with the notorious ISIS.

Shabnam Hashmi, managing trustee of the Act Now for Harmony and Democracy, described the appointment as ‘horrendous’ and said it was high time “the future generation was saved”.

Sareshwala, 51, had played a critical role in Modi’s attempt to reach out to the minorities, from organising conclaves for Muslim business leaders to facilitating kite-flying with actor Salman Khan during election campaigns.

Many say his credentials in business itself are dubious as his company Parsoli Group had faced the ire of the Securities and Exchange Board of India on several occasions.

But admits Sareshwala: “I don’t know much about Manuu. But I know that empowerment of a community is not possible without proper education.”

Why Narendra Modi Stole Christmas?

On 2 December 2014 , Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that in future 25 December would be celebrated as Good Governance Day because it was the birthday of Hindu nationalists Madan Mohan Malaviya and Atal Behari Vajpayee. Subsequently a circular was sent out to schools ordering them to cancel the public holiday on the 25 th and require children to come to school on Christmas Day for a variety of activities. Education Minister Smriti Irani was suspected of sending out the circular and lying when she denied it, but given PM Modi's propensity to bypass his ministers and deal directly with the bureaucrats under them, it is entirely possible that the order came from him. Even if it came from Irani, she was clearly acting in obedience to her master's voice. Notices went out to government offices, asking them to stay open and carry out similar programmes. The notice to universities had to be modified in view of the absurdity of asking students and university staff to come back in the middle of their vacation.

Christmas Day had been a public holiday throughout the history of independent India , so what changed in 2014? Obviously, the fact that it was the first Christmas with Modi in power as PM. Modi has from childhood been a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which, along with its large number of affiliated organisations including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is popularly known as the ‘Sangh Parivar' (‘Sangh family'). Its ideology of Hindu nationalism or ‘Hindutva' has been from its early days closely related to European fascism. Modi's role-model Hitler also had problems with Christmas: as the celebration of the birth of a Jew and a festival of peace for all humanity, it had no place in Nazi ideology. However, in a country where the majority were Christians, it would have been impossible simply to abolish it; instead, the Nazis redesigned it, changing its name, meaning and symbols. Modi suffers no such compulsions. With Christians only around 2 per cent of the Indian population, he has nothing to fear from cancelling one of their two holidays (rather than touching any of the several Hindu holidays).

As the articles referred to above (and there are many more) show, the print media and alternative websites have taken the threat to the Constitution seriously. Opposition parties, too, united to condemn what was called in parliament ‘an attack on the secular fabric of the country,' and to call for Modi to clarify his position. As a result, some of the BJP's proposed legislation failed to clear parliament and was later introduced as ordinances. The BJP hit back by castigating the opposition for derailing Modi's ‘development' agenda. The response of the electronic media was less than satisfactory. With very few exceptions, TV anchors either parroted the BJP line (without answering the question why robbing the 99% to enrich the 1% was so urgent that constitutional democracy could be sacrificed to it), or rued the fact that Modi allowed the opposition to derail his development agenda by failing to speak out against the ‘extremists' in his camp. But what, exactly, did they expect him to say? How could he possibly criticise them, given his record as Chief Minister of Gujarat ? Why would he even want to criticise them, when his election campaign drew so heavily on his reputation as an aggressive Hindu nationalist ? Why would he cancel Christmas unless he concurred with their goal of a Hindu state? The most he was willing to do was to tell his stormtroopers in private that they shouldn't court publicity about what they were doing, because it made some of his corporate supporters and foreign friends uncomfortable. ‘What head-in-the-sand liberals and Modi's newly-discovered liberal friends abroad (Obama, for instance) missed is that Modi and the right-wing see no contradiction between communalism and development'

US court dismisses lawsuit against India's Narendra Modi

A US judge has dismissed a lawsuit charging Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi with crimes against humanity during the 2002 Gujarat riots.

The New York-based judge upheld the US government's contention that Mr Modi was entitled to immunity as a sitting head of government.

A rights group filed the civil suit against Mr Modi in September on the eve of his maiden visit to the US.

More than 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, were killed in the religious riots.

Mr Modi has denied any wrongdoing and Indian courts have cleared him of all charges.

In September, The American Justice Centre filed a lawsuit against Mr Modi, which claimed that he did nothing to stop the riots.

The 28-page complaint also charged the prime minister with "committing crimes against humanity, extra-judicial killings, torture and inflicting mental and physical trauma on the victims, mostly from the Muslim community".

Judge Analisa Torres's dismissal of the lawsuit comes ahead of a planned visit to Delhi by US President Barack Obama to attend India's Republic Day celebrations on 26 January at Mr Modi's invitation.

The US and European countries boycotted Mr Modi for more than a decade after the riots, but have largely embraced him after he led his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to a landslide election win last year.

Mr Modi visited the US in September and held talks with Mr Obama, where the two leaders called for a "new agenda" between the two countries.

WHAT THE "PAID" MAINSTREAM MEDIA DOESNT SHOW --

Communal riots broke out in Hansot, near Ankleshwar (Gujarat) on Makar Sankrati day in which many were stabbed, shops were burnt and even ambulances were damaged. The injured were brought to a hospital in Surat and it is reported that a few of them succumbed to their injuries. The incident is deliberately underplayed by the mainstream media in order to avoid further embarrassment to Narendra Modi and his much hyped Vibrant Gujarat summit going on in Ahmedabad where delegates from many multinational companies across the globe are taking part....... Once again Modi refuses to tame the goons of his parent organisations like RSS/VHP and Bajrang Dal who are out to flame communal passions in the country.

What was Gandhi’s Evaluation of RSS ?

Ram Puniyani

With the new ruling dispensation, Modi Sarkar, attempts are being made to present Gandhi in a light which is favorable to the RSS combine. First, the "Swachata Abhiyan" (Cleanliness drive) was inaugurated on Gandhi Jayanti 2nd October, then it was claimed that RSS had nothing to do with Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse. Now; efforts are on to extract a certificate from Gandhi on the lines which should mean that Gandhi thought ‘RSS very good’. In this direction a multimedia program is being shown in ‘Dandi Kutir’ which was inaugurated by the Prime Minister Mr. Modi recently, (January 2015). In this multimedia presentation in the exhibition it is claimed that Gandhi had come to RSS camp in Wardha in 1930, along with Ghanshyamdas Birla. Gandhi was very impressed by its functioning of RSS and wanted to meet Dr. Hedgewar, the founder of RSS. As per these claims Mahatma did meet the RSS founder the next day.

Now how did Gandhi look at RSS? As RSS for long was working ‘quietly’, there are not too many references about the role of RSS during this period. Also since it was not a part of National movement we can’t comment about its role in that movement. However whatever one can glean from the available sources one can say that Gandhi’s thoughts were not favourable to RSS. In Harijan on 9th August 1942, Gandhi writes, “I had heard of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and its activities; and also know that it was a communal organization”, this was in response to the slogans and some speech against ‘other’ community, about which a complaint was made. In this Gandhi is referring to the drill of RSS volunteers, who shouted that this Nation belongs to Hindus alone and once the British leave we will subjugate the non Hindus. In response to the rowdyism indulged by communal organizations he writes, “I hear many things about RSS. I have heard it said the Sangh is at the root of all this mischief.” (Gandhi, xcviii, 320-322)

Amongst the recorded opinions about Gandhi’s evaluation of RSS, the most authentic is the one of his secretary Pyarelal. Pyarelal narrates an event in the wake of 1946 riots. A member of Gandhi’s entourage had praised the efficiency, discipline, courage and capacity for hard work shown by RSS cadres at Wagah, a major transit camp for Punjab refugees. Gandhi quipped back, ‘but don’t forget, even so had Hitler’s Nazis and Fascists under Mussolini’ Gandhi characterized RSS as a communal body with a totalitarian outlook’ (Pyarelal, Mahatma Gandhi: The Last Phase, Ahmadabad, page 440)

After independence, in the context of Delhi violence (Rajmohan Gandhi, Mohandas, page 642), Gandhi confronted the RSS chief Golwalkar, with reports of the RSS hand in Delhi violence, Denying the allegations Golwalkar also said that RSS did not stand for killing the Muslims. Gandhi asked him to say so publically. Golwalkar said Gandhi could quote him on this. Gandhi did this in his prayer talk that evening, but he told Golwalkar that statement ought to come from him. Later he told Nehru that he did not find Golwalkar convincing.’

Today having occupied the seat of power, RSS is desperate to link itself to the legacy of freedom movement from which it had kept aloof. It had criticized the freedom movement as people from all the communities were part of It. RSS aims for Hindu nation, the way Muslim League’s goal was Muslim nation. Today treading a careful path it wants to appropriate Gandhi for which a ‘certificate’ is needed from Gandhi. So his sentence is being manipulated to highlight ‘hard disciplined work’ and to hide the rider that ‘so had been the ‘Nazis of Hitler and Fascists of Mussolini.’ The basic contradiction in the two types of nationalisms should guide us as what was Gandhi’s attitude was towards RSS, despite the well manicured claims from RSS combine.

Shazia Ilmi and Kiran Bedi of the anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare fame have now joined BJP..... Sheer opportunists !!

Just consider the circus:

Kiran Bedi, Shazia Ilmi, VK Singh were giving nimbu paani to Hazare to break his fast (farce). Next VK Singh and Shazia Ilmi are 'fighting' an election against each other in Ghaziabad. Within months, Shazia Ilmi and Singh are in the same party, BJP !

We don't know whether the Ghaziabad match was fixed in heaven, or whether it was fixed in Nagpur. But it seems like a match fixed, if it was 'fought' between two candidates who were together before the elections, and together after the elections.

That's Indian Political League for you: IPL.
The cricketing IPL fixed matches are watched by millions of idiots.
How do you describe those who watch the political IPL fixed matches ?

The Kafkalands Of India

Looking at how the Amit Shah case has been managed, the possibility of other fake encounter cases falling apart is very real

At a time when the world is back to debating terror, it's clear that the ruling regime in India has made certain that things tilt in a certain direction. On December 30, 2014, in what appeared to be a New Year gift, BJP President Amit Shah was let off on all charges linked to the 2005-6 murders of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, his wife Kauser Bi and Tulsiram Prajapati. While giving a verdict that seemed to be doing the job of defending Shah at every stage, the judgement held that Sohrabbudin was a crook and hence deserved to be nabbed. In doing so, there was a presumption that the "encounter" that killed him was genuine although the facts reveal that he was abducted and murdered (what followed with his wife Kausar Bi, raped and killed in custody, was truly brutal).

It was in the context of the Gujarat fake encounters that some movement had taken place towards justice for the victims and punishment for the perpetrators. Following the manner in which the Shah case has been managed, the possibility of other cases falling apart is very real. That is one of the reasons why people who engage in such issues must read a recently released book, Kafkaland: Prejudice, Law and Counter-terrorism in India. It's written by activist-academic Manisha Sethi, who has been at the forefront of exposing random arrests in the name of fighting terrorism.

The book is dedicated to the late Mukul Sinha a lawyer whose diligent work actually put together the fake encounter cases that resulted in many Gujarat police-men landing behind bars. Sinha passed away a few months before Narendra Modi came to power. Will his life's work, done while living in Guajarat, now slowly fall apart?

The other reason for reading this book is to think about incidents such as the recent one of a boat blowing up off the coast of India. Frenzied speculation followed on whether it was a terrorist attack stalled by the coast guard or just a random incident built up by the agency? We shall never know, but Kafkaland will make us reflect about how narratives about terrorism are constructed and how ordinary citizens get trapped because of the casual subversion of norms, and a blatant profiling of a community.

Even those who would be on the other side of the ideological fence or see themselves as advocates of the hard state (never mind the collateral damage) should worry about the shoddy standards of investigations that are methodically detailed in Kafkaland. Equally important is to read the disturbing accounts of torture and acknowledge that this is not happening in Guantanamo Bay but in police stations in Mumbai, Delhi, or Hyderabad.

The book is disturbing, dark, farcical, indeed as the title suggests, a journey into a Kafkaesque reality. The author applies a clear headed passion to reveal the often fake idea of "truth" and the many "true lies" about counter-terrorism in India. This book challenges the version that is fed, digested and then regurgitated by the media. Following a terror strike, there are the rather breathless accounts of suspect X being rounded up by ATS Y or Special Cell Z!

"The short life of Ghulam Yazdani" is self explanatory as is the chapter "terrorism's true lies". Both tell us about what happens behind bars to the unfortunate people who are often just at the wrong place at the wrong time, and end up filling the demand for an arrest after an incident. Very relevant today is the chapter "Why the Ishrat Jahan Case Frightens our Commentators".

In the past, incidents such as the Mecca Masjid blasts turned out to be acts done by Hindu extremists whose aim was to trap Muslim boys, many of whom were tortured and behind bars for years before being released. Three months after the BJP came to power at the centre, the star accused in the Hindu terror castes, Swami Aseemanand, got bail on the charge of being involved in the conspiracy to bomb the Samjhauta Express. Certainly, those cases too are likely to collapse bit by bit.

Circular to Hold Puja in All Ahmedabad Schools Kicks Up a Row

The Ahmedabad School Board has whipped up a controversy with its circular asking all schools to hold 'Saraswati Vandana' on Vasant Panchami tomorrow, drawing accusations of promoting ruling BJP's Hindutva agenda and warnings of legal action and protest by Congress.

"Vasant Panchami is the occasion to remember Goddess of knowledge Maa Saraswati Devi. To make students understand the importance of education, schools need to organize Saraswati Puja and make students recite prayers of Saraswati during prayer gathering. Also, make them understand how Vasant Panchami is celebrated in other states," reads the January 19 circular issued by the board.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's (AMC) School Board runs around 450 primary schools in the city, including 64 Urdu medium schools, mostly in Muslim dominated areas attended by around 16,000 students from the minority community.

The circular has raised the hackles of opposition Congress, which has dubbed the move as an attack on the fundamental rights of Muslims. All forms of idolatry is prohibited in Islam.

Congress councillor from Sarkhej ward Haji Mirza Baig called it an attempt to promote the BJP's Hindutva agenda.

"In a democracy, everyone has the right to follow their religion and related rituals. This circular is an attack on the freedom of not only Muslims, but also of other religions. Why (do) they want Muslim students to perform puja? It should not be made compulsory in Urdu schools," said Baig.

"Congress councillors will stage protest against such dictatorial approach of AMC. Urdu schools, where majority students are Muslims, must be kept away from this order. Otherwise, we will take legal action and knock the doors of the court," he warned.

Fact finding report about Hansot violence

Recently, Gujarat had a serious communal flare up in Bharuch district. Hansot and Ambheta were the prime target of saffron people where Muslims suffered a lot about about ten days ago. Some of the prominent Muslims of Gujarat visited the ground zero and found some shocking realities. our senior correspondent and Editor of Gujarat siyasat Abdul hafiz lakhani talked with cross section of people .Here is the report

There was an undercurrent of tension in the villages after a youth identified as Sunil Patel of Ambheta village had posted an offensive picture of Prophet Muhammad on Whatsapp and circulated it among the villagers a month ago. About 25,000 Muslims of nearby areas had taken out a rally and submitted a memorandum to the district authorities to take action against Sunil. Sunil was arrested but was released a week ago on court orders, the tension was building up in the area since then. A ‘dharam parishad’ was also organised about 15 days ago in nearby Katpor village allegedly by Vallabh Patel, brother of local MLA Ishwar Patel. He alleged that two Muslim families of Katpor village were also asked by the local Hindus to convert to Hinduism or quit the village.

Muslim youths were frequently attacked whenever they happened to travel from one village to another for their daily works. He said that youths were sometimes stopped in presence of police when they could not be identified from their outer appearance and their driving licences were checked. If they happened to be Muslims, they were roughed up. However, police deny these allegations. It is alleged that it was a “pre-planned” attackand that police encouraged the mob to attack Muslim properties.

All these villages fall in the Bharuch parliamentary constituency which is currently represented by Mansukhbhai Dhanjibhai Vasava of the ruling BJP. Congress leader and Sonia Gandhi’s political secretary Ahmed Patel has also won four Lok Sabha elections from this seat.

A communal riot broke out at Hansot lying between Vadodara and Surat on Jan. 14. The intensity of the riots in an area that had been in communal peace , even during 2002 tragedy , was a cause of serious concern. More troubling it involved tribals and Koli Patels, against Muslims. A delegation consisted of JUH , Gujarat President, Maulana Rafiq Badodvi; AIMMM Gujarat President, Maulana Habibur Rehman Matadar; Maulana Salman, Zidni Ilma President J.S.Bandukwala, and the All India Majlis Tameer e Millat , Gujarat organiser, Munir Kheruwala.

Hansot has a Muslim population of about 5000, out of a total of 11000. The town was on edge due to one Sunil Patel who had posted in late December an insulting image of the Holy Prophet on the social media This had led to tension. Muslims had organized a protest rally. Hindus arranged a counter Dharma Parishad, led by Vithal Patel. The trigger was a minor kite incident on Jan. 14.

A firm Police action could have saved Hansot. Sadly the Police Superintendent Bipin Ahire , actually directed attacks on Muslims. Any man with a beard and topi was roughed up , with police a silent spectator. Over 200 bighas of standing sugar cane crop was burnt, in such a way that the touching Hindu plot was not affected at all. Muslim businesses were looted and many burnt. Within a few hours , the loss was about 4 crores. Two people died of stabbings and a 33 year old tempo driver was killed.

The violence spread so fast , that it appears it was meticulously planned.

The presence of a Union Minister, Mansukh Vasawa two days prior to the riot appears suspicious
.

About 25 Muslims have been arrested. But the police is most reluctant to arrest Hindus. The principal culprit Vallabh Patel, brother of a local MLA, moves about town freely. About 200 BJP members have resigned from the party, protesting that the name of the brother of the MLA, is not yet removed from the FIR. The other demand is that Muslims must not receive any compensation for the loss suffered.

Muslims protest the manner in which the Gujarat administration is handling this sensitive case. Muslims have almost no voice in this government. In the interest of justice and to prevent a recurrence of such bloody riots, some suggestions are

1) The Government machinery must be neutral and fair. The culprits must be arrested and the law must take its course.
2) Two mosques and one madrassa were vandalized. The Government must compensate for the same.
3) The property and business loss has been huge. They must get the full compensation.
4) The burning down of standing sugar cane , must also be compensated.
5) Disciplinary action must be taken against the Police Superintendent Bipin Ahire.

IBN 7 channel abruptly sacks senior editor for raising voice against blacking Aam Admi Party out

Pankaj Srivastava has become the latest victim in the Corporate-owned media for raising the issue of objectivity in news coverage as his channel was blacking out Aam Admi Party and its leader Arvind Kejriwal. He was summarily sacked by the management of IBN7 the Hindi News Channel owned by Network 18 from post of Associate Editor on January21, 2015 for raising the issue of unfair and unequal coverage of Delhi Assembly Elections.

Briefing the background of his abrupt dismissal, Pankaj Srivastava told Muslim Mirror, that he has been raising the issue of unfair and unequal coverage of Delhi Assembly Elections and on number of occasions approached editors and tried to persuade that the practice of complete black out of Aam Admi Party is unethical and goes against established norms of journalistic propriety. He revealed that the channel’s editor is brother of Delhi BJP chief Satish Satish Upadhyay and wants that nothing goes against the BJP on the channel.

A series of programmes like “Kiran Ka Karsihma” to highlight the BJP’s CM Candidate is being telecast in the channel are debated and criticized internally
.

His sacking reflects the insight of electronic media which has been under-fire from many quarters particularly non-BJP groupings for bias and one-sided coverage.

Abandoned as a child bride, wife of Narendra Modi hopes he calls

She’s waiting for him, as she has been all her life. But when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi dined with Barack and Michelle Obama at a glittering banquet Sunday night, his wife wasn’t by his side.

Modi, 64, kept his teenage marriage a secret for decades during his political ascent and only last year admitted that his wife exists.

The wife, Jashodaben Chimanlal Modi, is a retired teacher who lives in a small town in Modi’s home state of Gujarat. Although she had not heard from her husband in years, she says she still hopes to join him one day in the capital as his spouse.

“If he calls me, I will go,” she said in an interview. “I hear all his speeches on TV. I feel very good when I hear him speak. I want him to fulfill all his promises to the people. That’s my prayer to God.”

Modi never returned to his wife but never divorced her, even as he became the high-profile chief minister of Gujarat and, last year, India’s premier. He never publicly spoke of his wife, and journalists who sniffed around on the topic as Modi’s fame grew were privately discouraged from doing so.

Jashodaben Modi saw her husband only once when he was chief minister, at a ceremony at a local temple, according to her brother, Ashok Modi. She lives with her brother in the small town of Unjha, in the northern part of the state.

He had come to the [goddess temple] for a prayer. They did not speak. They did not even say a word to each other. They just met for five seconds,” the brother said.

The prime minister only officially acknowledged his wife’s existence when he filed his affidavit in April as a candidate for Parliament in the town of Vadodara.

During the election, the wife disappeared for a time, reportedly on a “barefoot pilgrimage,” in her husband’s honor. After he became prime minister, she was assigned an official security detail. But it has not been a happy experience.

Nearly a dozen guards watch her around the clock and follow her in a shiny car as she takes auto rickshaws and public transportation, they say. When she visits friends or relatives, they have to cook for the guards, she said.

The security travels in an air-conditioned car. But my sister takes buses, trains and auto rickshaws. What kind of justice is this? Should a prime minister's wife not get a car?” her brother asked.

“I am the wife of the prime minister of India,” she said in the affidavit. The security personnel tell me that they should be welcomed like guests. Which law makes provision for the same or which portion of the protocol prescribes this?”

Meanwhile, she subsists on a small pension from her time as a teacher. She keeps a small photo of her husband tucked in her prayer book and spends long hours in solitude.

Her brother says she gets depressed from time to time.

“When she feels dejected, we try to lift her mood,” the brother said. “We say, ‘The morning will come soon.’ We try to tell her that he will call her one day, soon. She has full faith that he will call her to him.”

]GM this is for you you will enjoy it.

it was matter of time before he made a clown of himself . wow so soon he is acting like a dictator mabuto seseko or idi amin
Delhi: Narendra Modi's daring fashion choices have won plaudits in the past, but the Indian leader's decision to wear a suit with his own name printed all over it sparked a barrage of mockery on social media.

The rare sartorial misstep involved a pinstriped suit Mr Modi wore for his one-on-one meeting with visiting US president Barack Obama on Sunday.

When images of the prime minister were enlarged, it became clear that the subtle pink stripes were made up of the words "Narendra Damodardas Modi" printed in tiny letters on the tailored wool suit.

Indian PM Narendra Modi, seen wearing a suit bearing his own name, speaks during a joint press conference with US President Barack Obama in Delhi.

Close-up images of the suit have gone viral, triggering sardonic responses from social media users under the hashtag #ModiSuit.

"Maybe he was afraid that someone would steal his clothes?" Suprateek Chatterjee tweeted, calling it a "vanity-striped suit".

The suit — Mr Modi's second outfit of the day after he greeted the Obamas at the airport wearing a beige kurta and saffron shawl — clearly did not offend the US president.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's suit bearing his own name.

Mr Obama complimented Mr Modi on his style during his toast at dinner that evening, and said he had considered wearing a kurta himself.

Thousands of Gujarat villagers protest against nuclear plant

When President Barack Obama discusses key issues, including the major Indo-US Civil Nuclear Deal, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his India visit that began on Sunday, the two leaders will have to address a strongly-worded letter from thousands of Gujarat’s villagers.

These villagers are opposing a high-profile nuclear power plant to be signed off here between American giant Westinghouse Electric Corporation and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL).

Thousands of villagers, backed by environmental activists, have been agitating against the proposed 6,000-MW nuclear project in Mithi Virdi area in the Bhavnagar district for nearly two years. The project proposes six nuclear reactors of 1,000 MW each.

Shaktisinh Gohil, the sarpanch of Jaspara village near the proposed site, told Mail Today that nearly two lakh people from 152 villages in the radius of the project will be adversely affected by the mega plant.

Gohil says the rich alluvial soil in the region will be threatened by the proposed plant, which is simultaneously located only five kilometres from a lignite mining site.

Moreover, the villagers point out that Alang, Asia's biggest ship-breaking yard, is just a stone's throw away and already faces serious environmental concerns.
