Reduce Petrol/Diesel Prices

Global oil prices are dropping fast. Petrol and Diesel prices in India are rising. Where is the money going? Sign my petition to demand an answer from the Petroleum Minister.

News reports show that there is no excuse for high fuel prices. The Government increased petrol and diesel taxes three times in the last three months to prevent retail price drops.

Who benefits from global price drops?

- The Government gets a lot more tax
- The Petroleum companies make more profits
- Middle men and petrol pump dealers make larger commissions

Who does not benefit? The common, Indian citizen. We continue paying through our noses. Sign my petition to stop this injustice!

Increases in fuel prices impact the country’s economy and inflation. Everything that relies on transport is more expensive. Why is the Government exploiting the common man like this?

We are taxpaying citizens and we deserve an answer. If enough of us speak up, we can get the Government to respond to us and drop petrol and diesel prices.

Sign and share my petition with everyone you know.

Make in India Week: MoUs signed with firms making losses

“The event is a revised version of Vibrant Gujarat. The Gujarat government in 2009 announced investments worth 12 lakh crore, whereas only Rs 62,000 crore was invested. For that, the Gujarat government gave at least 11.15 crore sq metres land to industrialists and builders at throwaway prices. We hope this wouldn’t happen in Maharashtra,” said Sanjay Nirupam, president of the Mumbai unit of Congress.

Referring to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ announcement of 2,436 MoUs singed at the event, Nirupam alleged that most of these companies are loss making companies. “Also, some of these projects were announced last year. So, it is just repackaging in this event,” he told the media on Wednesday.

To support his allegation, Nirupal claimed that Uttam Galva Steel, one of the companies which signed an MoU, reported loss of Rs 424.5 crore in the previous quarter, and declared debt of Rs 2,731.28 crores as of March 31.

He said the loss incurred by Vedanta Limited (Consolidated) was of Rs 11,373 crores (loss after tax), while its debt was of Rs 72,000 crores (long and short term borrowings). He said the Mercedes Benz plan to invest Rs 2,000 crores to upgrade its Chakan plant was announced in September 2015, adding that the same was the case with JSW and Panchsil for the IT park.

Make in India was about attracting foreign investments but most of the MoUs were signed with Indian companies. The BJP claimed that it would generate two crore employment every year but has only managed 17 lakh so far. During the UPA regime, it was at least 60 lakh per year,” he said.

Nirupam wanted the state government to put out details of the total money spent on the Make in India Week.

“We have learned that at least Rs 400 crore has been spent on the event. What was the need to spend so much money just for listening to a lavani programme and sing songs with Kailash Kher?” he asked, adding that the ‘Built in Mumbai’ announcement to attract builders would lead to huge scams.

Now, the RSS is the BJP and the BJP is the RSS.

Invoking Lord Krishna’s explanation of his relationship to existence as explained in the Bhagavad Gita, M.S. Golwalkar—who succeeded Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) founder K.B. Hedgewar as its chief, or sarsanghchalak, and became its most influential ideologue—saw the interface between the RSS and Sangh-inspired organisations like the Jan Sangh thus: “I am in all that exists and they are in me, but I am not in them and they are not in me.” He perceived such affiliates as ‘additions’ and not substitutes to the mission and goals of the RSS: a lofty distance existed between the RSS and organisations claiming allegiance to it. While he argued that the Sangh needed power in order to influence every aspect of society, he also dreamt of a future when the government of the day would take orders from the RSS. Only this would lead to the achievement of the RSS’s goal—uniting Hindus into a Hindu rashtra.

That goal might still lurk in the background, but the RSS of present sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat and the BJP of Narendra Modi have effectively erased the distance between the principal and its affiliate: now, the RSS is the BJP and the BJP is the RSS. In doing so, Golwalkar’s idea of fashioning the RSS on an ideal of renunciation and asceticism has been finally buried. Purity, virtue, inculcation of values, cultural awakening—now, these are mere words with occasional rhetorical currency but little substance. Golwalkar had likened politics to a woman of questionable character, one who takes on various guises to entice and please (nripaneeti vaaraanganaiva anekaroopa). The RSS no longer has a problem with such questionable cohabitation.

Further, Golwalkar believed the RSS had the divine mission of wielding dharmadand or righteous control over politics and society, even if it was to be indirect. He saw lack of control as a consequence of diversity and democracy, which had wrecked Hindu unity and introduced un-Hindu ideas and forces. Bhagwat and Modi have dispensed with this article of faith as well. Righteous control has been replaced with unscrupulous pragmatism and political ambition: the dand remains; the dharma lies in the dustbin.

To understand the Modi-RSS axis is to understand the radical transformation that has swept the RSS. The RSS now perceives Golwalkar as an aberration. It has completed the change from a moralising, sanctimonious and self-righteous outfit to a ruthless political outfit that acknowledges the pragmatism of his succeeding sarsanghchalak Balasaheb Deoras: the RSS had to be free of idealism, ideology and scruples to achieve Hindu rashtra. The Modi-Bhagwat combine has advanced this further by outsourcing fragments of the original ideology to anyone who wishes to implement it. Modi, then, only speaks of a robust nationalism and of development. Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan feels free to ride the development plank while introducing singing Vande Mataram in schools and the estranged B.S. Yediyurappa is allowed to mine minerals and change textbooks to suit a Hindutva orientation. Under Modi, with the RSS openly calling the shots, what emerges is piecemeal Hindutva. The RSS and the BJP have also modified their conception of politics and their already apologetic idea of democracy to one preferred by corporate India. Development and progress is then only a thinly veiled euphemism for technocratic-managerial governance and unbridled self-interest. The rhetoric of a strong India as a future superpower legitimises the development agenda, especially when the government in power has proved woefully inadequate. In orchestrating this subletting of politics to corporate India, the RSS-BJP propaganda machine has skilfully transformed politics and the politician into the enemy while painting themselves as guardians of a future India that increasingly resembles a corporate boardroom.

Finally, there’s the attempt to portray Modi in the flattering tones of a righteous kshatriya ruler. Sardar Patel and Indira Gandhi might be the inspirations for firmness and decisiveness, but the overall picture is of a kshatriya king battling to save his kingdom from internal and external enemies. This is a consequence of the rejection of the asceticism represented by Golwalkar, who for a brief period was a sanyasi influenced by Swami Vivekananda’s philosophy. His spin doctors present him as brave, unsparing, accurate, virile, righteous and fearsome. Here lies Modi’s undoing and that of his RSS mentors. Even Arjuna, the ideal kshatriya hero, had to spend 13 years in exile as Brihannala, a eunuch teaching dance to King Virat’s daughter. Reduced to impotence, transvestism and a non-heroic occupation, he is left with a huge amount of suppressed rage and violence. Arjuna, like many kshatriya kings, represents realistic weakness and symbolic centrality. Will this be Modi’s fate too? The RSS ought to know.

''FEKU'' MODI AND HIS ''FEKU'' GOVERNMENT !!

Making and faking

"Loud thunder, little rain" is supposed to be an old Chinese saying. Nothing would describe the Modi government better. There can be no doubt that, in 21 months, it has been able to register improvement on several economic fronts. But the tendency to make exaggerated claims diverts attention from what is real, and affects credibility. Last week, Mr Modi was back to doing what he does best: organising a spectacle. As is usual with such shows, the investment promises emanating from a 'Make in India' week were vastly exaggerated. Maharashtra, for instance, is said to have signed more than 3,000 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the potential to create three million jobs.

Just in case you think only Mr Modi plays this game, Mamata Banerjee's investment summit a month ago extracted for her state investment promises that totaled one-sixth of what has been announced for the whole country (Rs 15 lakh crore, or about 10 per cent of GDP) at the end of the Make in India week. And, earlier this month, Karnataka topped West Bengal's numbers at its own investment summit. In its last three such 'summits', Karnataka has compiled investment proposals that total Rs 13 lakh crore. You are welcome to believe such numbers. But, according to one compilation, less than 10 per cent of the promises flowing from Mr Modi's old Vibrant Gujarat shows have fructified. To adapt a centuries-old saying, if MoUs were horses, beggars would ride!

There was an air of make believe also in some of the pronouncements made by Nitin Gadkari, the transport minister. Speaking at the Make in India week, Mr Gadkari promised to build 2,000 ports - an eye-popping number if ever there was one, given that the country has only a 7,500-km coastline. As of now, the country has barely a dozen major ports and 200 other ports, so the promise to build 2,000 ports in five years suggests, to anyone who is not completely gullible, a level of creativity with numbers that Mr Gadkari is no stranger to. For instance, the minister is given to saying that when he took charge the pace of highway construction was just 2 km per day, which he will take up to 30 km per day by next month. A reality check shows that the pace of road construction in 2013-14 (the year before Mr Gadkari took charge) was more than 11 km per day, not 2 km. This year may achieve 16 km per day, so Mr Gadkari's efforts at renewed momentum in highway construction are bearing fruit. Then why not stick to the real numbers?

It is the same with that other minister who is keen to make a mark, Piyush Goyal. The exaggerated revenue claims with regard to what would be achieved through the initial coal mine auctions have already been punctured by reality. However, Mr Goyal has managed improvements on other fronts - coal production, for instance. Also his focus on tackling the discoms' financial problems and removing transmission bottlenecks are what the doctor ordered, since the issue now is not the old one of supply shortage, but demand shortfall.

As for making in India, leading makers of fighter aircraft like Boeing and Saab have said they are willing to re-locate assembly lines to India, so some breakthroughs may well be coming. Groups like Tata and Mahindra, and companies like Bharat Forge and Larsen & Toubro, are being encouraged to get into localising defence production - encouragement that was missing from the last government. New railway locomotive factories are being built, and the solar drive is making headway. When there is real progress to talk about, could we do with less of make-believe ministerial pronunciations - like the promise of 2,000 ports?

TRUTH CANNOT BE KEPT HIDDEN FOR TOO LONG

Gujarat Government alleges that, on 27th February 2002, the fire which caused the tragic death of 58 passengers in the S6 coach of the ill-fated Sabarmati Express was started from inside by pouring over 120 litres of petrol and setting it on fire as part of a pre-planned conspiracy. However the evidence on record completely disproves Gujarat Government’s theory of Petrol or any other liquid fuel.

The Bitter Truth of Jat stir in Haryana
Expose by Special Investigation Team of Haryana Human Rights Organisation (HHRO)
(PP Kapoor, Sunil Jaglan, Adv Utsav Bains)
This is a shocking 4-minute long CCTV footage from a junction, where police was posted in full strength. You suddenly see the police jeeps and vans leaving the place, as if based on some order from the 'top'. A minute later you see riotous gangs approaching and running amok. It's clear from the footage that the available police force could have easily stopped the mob, if they wanted to. But they didn''t want to.
This is a scary picture of what will happen when those who are supposed to uphold law and order stand by and watch silently. This is what happened in 1984 in Delhi, in 2002 in Gujarat and at the Patiala House court this past week.
Share this one widely. This is what our police forces have become.

In Presence of Modi’s Minister, Sangh Meeting in Agra Warns Muslims of Violence

With several BJP leaders, including the Union minister of state for HRD in attendance, there were threats of “final battle” against Muslims, who were equated to “demons” and “descendants of Ravana”

New Delhi: At a Sangh parivar condolence meeting in Agra for VHP worker Arun Mahaur, who was killed last week by some Muslim youths, warnings were sounded to Muslims of a looming “final battle,” according to a report in The Indian Express.

About 5,000 people gathered for the event on Sunday, February 28, which was attended by BJP’s MP from Agra and Union minister of state for human resource development Ram Shankar Katheria, BJP’s Fatehpur Sikri MP Babu Lal, party MLAs, VHP and Bajrang Dal leaders.

All preparations” had been made to seek “revenge” before the 13th-day death rituals for Mahuar, the speakers said.

VHP district secretary Ashok Lavania, who has been jailed before for assaulting Muslims, said that “human skulls will be offered for his [Mahaur’s] martyrdom”. “The sacrifice of my brother will not go in vain. … The revenge of the killing of one brother demands killing of ten demons.”

In response, the charged crowded chanted “Jis Hindu ka khoon na khaule, who khoon nahi who paani hai” (If a Hindu’s blood doesn’t boil, that is not blood but water).

The Indian Express reports that Lavania went on to talk about the “action” that was planned. “Many have approached me asking why we are not doing anything. They are saying do something — arson, murder, shootout. These are common Hindus. We are avoiding this because the organisation (VHP/RSS) is careful about not being held responsible… ultimately it becomes an act of the society. Once people are galvanised, no question would be raised at all. In cases like Ram Janmbhoomi, Muzaffarnagar, the party had disappeared. But it is certain that revenge will be taken before the [thirteen day period] is over”.

Babu Lal echoed Lavania’s provocative comments. “Don’t try to test us… We will not tolerate insults to the community. We do not want unrest at any cost, but if you want to test Hindus, then let’s decide a date and take on Muslims.”

Katheria demanded that Mahaur’s killers be hanged, saying that his ministership would not get in the way and that his “hands are not tied”. “We have to be strong now”, a Dainik Bhaskar report has quoted him as saying. “We have to wage a war. If we don’t do this now, we will lose another partner tomorrow”.

According to The Indian Express report, local BJP leader Kundanika Sharma called other parties “jackals” for seeking the votes of “traitors”. “But we want the heads of these traitors, the killers of Arun Mahaur,” she said. “This is not the time to sit quiet. Raid them, wear burqas, but corner them. Behead ten heads for one head”.

VHP General Secretary Surendra Jain warned the administration not to turn “Agra into Muzaffarnagar”. Jain asked members to form Gau Raksha Samitis (cow protection units) in every village, saying that the administration should “not thwart their efforts as they are doing the administration’s work”. “If anyone, even the IG here, has any doubt about the law, they can approach me. I will show them the clauses of the IPC that say if you (police) do not perform your duty then common citizens can take law in their own hands”.

Katheria has had a history of making provocative statements against Muslims. In January 2015, a video recording of his went viral in which he is threatening the Agra police that he would mobilise “50,000 Hindus” to counter the presence of Muslims on the streets during a religious event.

U.S. lawmakers urge Modi to take action on religious violence

"Of particular concern is the treatment of India’s Christian, Muslim and Sikh communities," the lawmakers –several of them consistently pro-India -- have written to the PM.

Eight U.S. Senators and 26 members of the U.S. House of Representatives have raised “grave concerns about the increasing intolerance and violence experienced by members of… religious minority communities,” in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, citing threats to Christians in Chhattisgarh and vigilantism over beef that has led to the murder of four Muslims.

Applauding India’s commitment to pluralism and tolerance, and reminding Mr. Modi that he had promised to ensure complete religious freedom, the lawmakers urged him to “turn these words into action by publicly condemning” such violence.

The Union government’s drive against civil society organisations receiving foreign donations has been an irritant in bilateral relations for some time.

The lawmakers’ letter on religious violence, specifically naming the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bajrang Dal that share the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh’s ideological universe with Mr. Modi, could be potentially embarrassing for the Prime Minister. Mr. Modi will be in the U.S on March 31 and April 1 to attend the nuclear security summit being convened by President Barack Obama.

The letter also comes against the backdrop of the Centre’s unprecedented steamrolling of political dissent in the country, which is increasingly a talking point in the U.S. capital.

“On June 17th, 2014, more than 50 village councils in the Bastar district of Chhattisgarh adopted a resolution banning all “non-Hindu religious propaganda, prayers, and speeches” in their communities. The Christian minority community has been dramatically affected: the ban effectively has criminalised the practice of Christianity for an estimated 300 Christian families in the region one day after a mob, which included members of the Vishva Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal, seriously injured six Christians in the village of Sirciguda. Since the ban was implemented, Christians in the Bastar District reportedly have been subjected to physical assaults, denial of government services, extortion, threats of forced expulsion, denial of access to food and water, and pressure to convert to Hinduism,” the letter said.

“We also are concerned that the nearly country-wide beef ban is increasing tensions and encouraging vigilante violence against the Indian Muslim community. On Monday, November 2nd, a Hindu mob killed Mohammed Hasmat Ali, a married father of three, in Manipur, India, after he was accused of stealing a cow. Mr. Ali reportedly is the fourth Muslim murdered in just six weeks by Hindu mobs angered over allegations of cows being slaughtered or stolen. We understand that the September 28th murder of 52-year-old Mohammed Saif in Uttar Pradesh sparked a national outcry over rising intolerance toward religious minorities which culminated in hundreds of prominent academics, business leaders, and authors protesting.”

“We want to raise additional concerns about the lack of recognition of Sikhism as a distinct religion, which prevents members of the community from accessing social services and employment and educational preferences available to other religious communities. Sikh community members reportedly are harassed and pressured to reject religious practices and beliefs distinct to Sikhism. On October 14, security forces killed two Sikhs and injured scores of others in Punjab who were protesting peacefully against the desecration of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, Sikhism's holy book,” the lawmakers wrote.

“Mr. Prime Minister, we applaud India as a pluralistic society with a long-standing commitment to inclusion and tolerance. We also applaud your statements about religious freedom and communal harmony, including your promise in February 2014 that your government would “ensure that there is complete freedom of faith…and not allow any religious group, belonging to the majority or the minority, to incite hatred against others.” We urge you to turn these words into action by publicly condemning the ban on non-Hindu faiths in the Bastar District of Chhattisgarh, and the violent assaults and other forms of harassment against religious minorities throughout India. We also urge you to take steps to control the activities of groups, such as the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and instruct Indian security forces to enforce the rule of law and protect religious minority communities from religiously-motivated harassment and violence.

Such steps would demonstrate your government’s commitment to fostering a stable and inclusive society and respecting international obligations on the rights of religious minorities, including religious freedom.”

“We await your response,” the letter concluded.

Senators Roy Blunt (R-MO), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Al Franken (D-MN), James Lankford (R-OK), Ben Sasse (R-NE), Tim Scott (R-SC) and Representatives Keith Ellison (D-MI), Joe Pitts (R-PA), Brad Wenstrup (R-OH), Jim McGovern (D-MA), Doug Lamborn (R-CO), Trey Gowdy (R-SC), Juan Vargas (D-CA), Jim Costa (D-CA), Trent Franks (R-AZ), Betty McCollum (D-MN), Mark Walker (R-NC), Doug Collins (R-GA), Tim Walberg (R-MI), Ted Poe (R-TX), Adam Schiff (D-CA), John Conyers, (D-MI) have signed the letter.

Former Judges, Jurists, Cops Urge Supreme Court to Act Against Hate Speech

NEW DELHI — A group of former judges, IPS officers and jurists have urged the Chief Justice of India and all the other judges of the Supreme Court of India, to take suo motu constitutional action on the alarming and threatening statements being made by persons currently in powerful positions within the Union government. In the letter, reported the Wire, the signatories explain that the “distressing and hate-filled” sentiments that have been expressed appear to be part of a pattern. After listing a number of incidents, the letter emphasises that because “it is the ruling party at the Centre and its representatives” that are stoking these dangerous sentiments, the Supreme Court must act urgently.

The fundamental rights of the people under Article 14, 19, 21 and 25 of the Indian Constitution need to be protected.

The minister, the MP, the MLA and all other culprits need to be punished for violating their constitutional duty under Article 51A(e) to promote harmony and the spirit of common brotherhood amongst all the people of India transcending religious diversities.

The offenders need to be proceeded against under Sections 124A, 153A, 153B, 292, 293, 295A, 505 of the Indian Penal Code.

We also urge the Hon’ble Supreme Court that a Permanent and Sitting Commission be appointed to monitor and oversee (video tape, record and document) all such meetings happening to prevent a situation of hate driven provocation and attacks on marginalized sections. Our country is being pushed to the brink with these kinds of statements.

We also list below a list of distressing and hate-filled sentiments made by ministers and elected representatives, and office bearers of the party in power, since May 2014 revealing that the present report is not an aberration but part of a dangerous and sinister pattern.

Names of Signatories:

Justice (retired) PB Sawant
Julio Ribeiro (former IPS officer)
Justice (retired) Rajinder Sachar
Justice (retired) BG Kolse Patil
Justice (retired) Hosbet Suresh
Iqbal Chagla (senior counsel)

Amnesty International annual report condemns ‘growing intolerance’ in India

Amnesty International has condemned growing intolerance in India in its annual report for 2015-16.

Authorities in India failed to “prevent many incidents of religious violence” and sometimes “contributed to tensions through polarising speeches”, Amnesty International said as it condemned growing intolerance in the country in its annual report released on Wednesday.

The rights body in its report for 2015-16 warned against worldwide assault of freedoms with many governments “brazenly” breaking international law, including an “intensified crackdown on key freedoms” in India.

“Scores of artists, writers and scientists returned national honours in protest against what they said was a climate of growing intolerance,” the report said in reference to India.

“Authorities clamped down on civil society organisations critical of official policies, and increased restrictions on foreign funding. Religious tensions intensified, and gender and caste-based discrimination and violence remained pervasive. Censorship and attacks on freedom of expression by hardline Hindu groups grew,” it added.

Amnesty rebuked Indian authorities for “failing to prevent many incidents of religious violence, and sometimes contributing to tensions through polarising speeches and pervasive caste-based discrimination and violence”.

In reference to violence against women, it said: “Although nearly 322,000 crimes against women, including over 37,000 cases of rape, were reported in 2014, stigma and discrimination by police officials and authorities in India continued to deter women from reporting sexual violence, and most states still lacked standard operating procedures for the police to address violence against women.”

Modi government must explain why the army was used for godman Sri Sri Ravishankar's event

Army unhappy with festival duty

Many army officers believe the army chief should have taken a stronger stand against using army resources to help what one officer calls "a government-friendly God-man."

Serving and retired army personnel and other concerned citizens have protested at the use of army engineers and combat equipment in building two pontoon bridges over the Yamuna river for a three-day World Culture Festival (WCF) being organised from March 11-13 on the river’s floodplain in Delhi. Separately, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has expressed concern over the impact of hundreds of thousands of visitors and large structures on the fragile Yamuna bed and the flora and fauna that inhabit it.

The WCF is being organised by the Sri Sri Ravi Shankar-led Art of Living Foundation, which claims to propagate a “stress-free, violence-free world.” The founder, who is widely called “Sri Sri”, is close to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership and was awarded the Padma Vibhushan this year. The WCF website prominently displays a photograph of him with BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Senior army generals tell Business Standard they are deeply uncomfortable with deploying soldiers and equipment for a function organised by a private, commercial organisation, but they had no choice. “We were not asked or consulted. The raksha mantri ordered us to build those bridges,” says a general in army headquarters.

In a heated debate raging within military circles on social media like WhatsApp, many army officers believe the army chief should have taken a stronger stand against using army resources to help what one officer calls “a government-friendly god-man.”

Furthermore, the Sri Sri Foundation is a commercial organisation that openly seeks donor funding on its website. “Does the government even know where Sri Sri gets its funding from? It claims to be a non-profit organisation, but we would love to see the book of accounts”, demands another general, who seeks anonymity.

Perhaps the strongest argument against using army assistance in such functions relates to precedent. Says a serving lieutenant general: “Today we have come out to support the Sri Sri Foundation. Tomorrow, it could be Baba Ramdev; after that, the Jamaat-e-Islami; the next day the Dera Sacha Sauda or the Nirankari establishment. Where do we draw the line?”

HOW THE HYPOCRITE AND LOWLY POLITICIANS CHANGE THEIR COLORS LIKE CHAMELEONS !!

When Smriti Irani (Now a Union Minister in Modi's cabinet) demanded the resignation of CM Narendra Modi (in 2004)

Tulsi to go on fast unto death

Popular TV actress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Smriti 'Tulsi' Irani has threatened to fast unto death demanding the resignation of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

Irani will begin her fast on December 25, the birthday of BJP leader and former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Irani, who unsuccessfully contested from Delhi's Muslim-dominated Chandni Chowk constituency in the April-May parliamentary elections, blamed Modi for BJP's recent electoral reverses.

Modi has been widely criticised for his handling of the 2002 communal violence in Gujarat, which killed more than 1,000 people, mostly Muslims.

Asked by a television channel if she had the permission of senior BJP leaders for her move, Irani said: "Why do you think you need permission to do what you think is right. BJP is a democratic party."

She denied that her action amounted to indiscipline and said she was not instigating party workers to join her in the fast.

"Whenever people mention Gujarat they only talk about the riots and try to corner the Gujaratis on the issue. So, in order to maintain the respect that I have for Atalji and the BJP, I won't hesitate to take this step," she said.

Smriti Irani plays the popular character of Tulsi in Kyonki Saas bhi kabhi bahu thi on Star Plus.

Kanhaiya Kumar has shown that the government is only for BJP supporters – and against everyone else

With his fierce public rebuke of the prime minister, the JNU student leader has shattered the belief that Narendra Modi is to be held in fear.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will struggle hard to recover from the deadly punches Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union leader Kanhaiya Kumar threw at him in his fiery speech on the evening of March 3, hours after his release on bail in a sedition case.

No doubt, Modi will continue to remain prime minister for another three years and he may continue to win elections here and there. But what he seems to have lost irreversibly – unless he takes urgent corrective measures – is the authority and prestige he commands because of the post he holds.

Modi stands diminished. This is because Kumar has conveyed to the nation through his speech – beamed live on just about every channel – that Modi has chosen to govern not as prime minister of all citizens, but only of the Sangh Parivar and other Hindutva adherents. That he oversees an extremely partisan administration, brooks no opposition and criticism, and that his government has deliberately triggered an ideological war that his party wishes to win by conjuring up episodes to justify the use of state power. Kumar also trained the spotlight on the many promises Modi made to the electorate, but he seemingly never intended to implement.

The courage Kumar displayed challenges an enduring myth about Modi – that he doesn’t forgive his critics, that he is a strongman who evokes fear in those around him. When Modi came to Delhi as prime minister, bureaucrats stopped airing views about their ministries over the phone, fearing it was tapped and somebody would be listening in. There were many juicy, but disturbing, stories about Union ministers cowering before Modi.

David vs Goliath

The belief that Modi is to be feared has been shattered by the many barbs Kumar threw at him, each cheered lustily by the audience surrounding him in JNU. He was mocking Modi’s power as well as daring him. It is possible his government may still retaliate against Kumar, but only at its own peril. It would only reinforce the growing impression that Modi is authoritarian, brought out in Kumar’s reference to Hitler. The student leader said, “Modiji was talking about [Joseph] Stalin and [Nikita] Khrushchev in Parliament. When I heard him speaking I felt like saying...Modiji, please speak about Hitler a little.”

But the perceived authoritarian streak in Modi is not only because of his personality but because of the ideology to which he subscribes. The student leader asked Modi to talk about “Mussolini whose black cap you wear, who [Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh founder, MS] Golwarkar sahib went to meet”. In other words, it is the Hindutva ideology which has Modi, as also the Sangh outfits, embracing an authoritarian style of functioning, being intolerant of differences of opinion.

Scarcely before has a prime minister been rebuked so publicly. It was David taking on Goliath. Kanhaiya’s speech will be seen as a battle between the powerless and the powerful, between the privileged and the common person. Kanhaiya did not let his listeners forget that he belongs to an impoverished family, that JNU has provided him and others of his class an avenue for social mobility, to be educated in the country’s premier educational institute. Modi is the other, the powerful and rich foe. Modi’s chaiwala persona has been denuded of its symbolical meaning.

Obviously, Kumar’s speech will have enraged Sangh Parivar supporters, as it will enthuse their ideological opponents. But this illustrates vividly that the Modi Sarkar has become partisan, commanding the respect and deference of only those who belong to the prime minister’s party and a segment of those who voted for it in the 2014 elections. You will not even have neutral political pundits express dismay at Kanhaiya being disrespectful to the prime minister and diminishing his stature overnight.

They will not do so because Modi isn’t perceived to be just and fair, as is expected of any prime minister. In a democracy, governments do try to execute the agendas of their parties and hope to establish the dominance of their respective ideologies. But this cannot and should not be at the expense of fair play; it cannot and should not lead members of society to win the ideological battle through bloodletting. Modi has forgotten these aspects of governance, choosing to remain silent even as his own party members have tried to light one fire after another through divisive programmes like love jihad, ghar wapsi, cow protection, and the ongoing attempt to crush dissent.

His government has consequently become the government of the Bharatiya Janata Party, by the Bharatiya Janata Party, for Bharatiya Janata Party supporters. All other Indians are rivals who have to be fought – and vanquished through means fair or foul.

In many ways, Kumar has undermined the moral legitimacy of the Modi government. He has shown it to be culpable of triggering debates on spurious issues to divert popular attention from its own failings. As Kumar said, “Do not try to separate the constable, the farmer, the soldier, poor people like me, by creating distorted binaries. I salute the soldiers, but have you ever thought of their families, the families of farmers who are forced to commit suicide?”

The distorted binaries, Kumar suggested, have been created to ensure people do not remember Modi’s elections promises of “sabka saath, sabka vikas” (Together with all, development for all), of bringing back black money from abroad, and depositing Rs 15 lakh in each person’s account. From this perspective, it is not only a government for the BJP supporters, but also against the people.

THE SCAMS, FRAUDS AND CORRUPTION IN MODI GOVERNMENT WHICH ARE NEVER HIGHLIGHTED BY THE PAID AND CORRUPT MEDIA .....

Consider these news reports.

#1. "The Supreme Court on Thursday [January 2014] set aside a 40 acre land allotment in Kutch district permitted by the Modi government to Alumina Refinery Limited for a sum of Rs 1.20 crore in violation of statutory norms.

The top court also had harsh words for Modi’s Revenue Minister Anandi Ben Patel who cleared the sale from an earlier company which was allotted the plot, bypassing objections from top bureaucrats." [January 2014]

#2. "Rajasthan Housing Board property illegally assigned to BJP legislator Suryakanta Vyas." [May 2014]

#3. "Rs 2,000 crore graft charge against Madhya Pradesh Minister for farmers welfare and agriculture development minister Gaurishankar Bisen." [June 2014] (As I write this, Modi is addressing a farmer’s gathering and telling them how they are braver than the jawans ‒ who, we were told in the recent past, are braver than the students….)

#4. Vyapam. The scam so big, it dwarfs anything that has gone before. (Oh, but that was before Modi became prime minister? Oh yes, and Modi is now prime minsiter, and his hand-picked consigliere Amit Shah is head of the party, and the scam-tainted continue to rule the state…)

#5. The joint plunder of the Aravallis by Haryana and Rajasthan in defiance of the Supreme Court. [July 2014]

#6. Pankaja Munde who managed to find a way to scam peanut brittle meant for children

#7. The Rs 1,000 crore rice export scam involving Punjab, Haryana and Gujarat. [February 2016]

I could go on (Remember Lalitgate?). But what’s the point?

Is it any wonder then that the government is dragging its feet on the “bring back black money” meme that Modi hammered away at during the election cycle?

And please don’t bring up the dozens of scams by the Congress. It is not my argument that the previous government was not corrupt. It is precisely that corruption that this government promised to end. So how’s the “…na khaane doonga” bit working out?

The ‘Gujarat Model’ of Dealing With Dissent and Challenges

The constant resurrection of the Ishrat Jahan case, and the dubious arrest of Kanhaiya Kumar and other JNU students have played out like a re-run of the Narendra Modi-Amit Shah method of dealing with dissent and challenges.

It’s not what you believed would finally come, but after two years of waiting for the hailed and trumpeted ‘Gujarat Model’ that was promised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it is here in Delhi. Alas, it’s not the illusory model of development but what we have got is the ‘Gujarat Model of Fraud and Dirty Tricks’. The constant resurrection of slain Ishrat Jahan’s identity as an alleged terrorist and the dubious arrest of JNU students’ union leader Kanhaiya Kumar on charges of sedition have played out like a re-run of the Modi-Amit Shah method of dealing with dissent and challenges.

There’s a vivid history of such duplicity by the Modi-Shah duo, from the Godhra riots case to the Sohrabbuddin fake encounter case and even the snoopgate scandal.

Wanted for riot murder, J&K BJP leader surfaces at MoS, PMO, house

WANTED by the Jammu and Kashmir Police for a murder during the 2013 communal clashes in Kishtwar, and declared an absconder by court, a BJP leader from Paddar surfaced at the official Delhi residence of Minister of State in the PMO Dr Jitendra Singh on Friday.

In a photograph taken at the meeting, Hari Krishan alias Kasooru can be seen with Singh and sitting BJP MLAs of Kishtwar, Doda and Bhaderwah in Jammu and Kashmir.

Kasooru and nine others are accused of murdering 52-year-old Lassa Khandey during communal clashes in Kishtwar around Eid in 2013. Khandey was accompanying his injured son and brother in an ambulance to Gulabgarh, from where they were to be airlifted to the Udhampur Military Hospital. A mob had attacked the ambulance en route and abducted Khandey. His body was found by police next day.

Kasooru incidentally had campaigned for both Sharma and Singh during the 2014 Assembly elections and the general elections, respectively. Kishtwar is part of the Udhampur parliamentary constituency from where Singh was elected.

Significantly, this is not the first time a person wanted on charges of murder in connection with the 2013 communal clashes in Kishtwar has been seen rubbing shoulders with senior BJP leaders. In May 2015, Rohan Lal, wanted for burning alive one Bashir Ahmed Moochi, was seen watching a cricket match in Kishtwar town along with then Minister of State for Revenue and Roads & Buildings Sunil Sharma.

Roshan Lal had left the venue along with the minister before police got alerted to his presence, and remains absconding.

RSS is behind Sufi Conference : Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan

RSS is instrumental behind this Sufi Conference and dividing Muslims on sectarian line is the main agenda of this conference said Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan while talking to MuslimMirror.com.

It should be remembered that the agenda to divide Muslims on sectarian line had been uttered by Subramanian Swamy and this Sufi Conference is the part of same agenda, said Maulana Tauqeer Raza.

Expressing his deep anger over the ongoing Sufi Conference, Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan said that ‘hate politics and creating division among Muslims is the main motive of this conference, organizers of the conference have mortgaged their conscience to RSS office and the Muslims of entire country will never tolerate it’.

Nothing could be kept in secret in this era and you can’t fool anyone, everyone knows the game being played behind this conference, dividing Muslims on sectarian line has been major agenda of RSS and some people are being used for this purpose.

‘The history is witness of the fact that a Sufi never knocked at doors of rich, its first time that in name of Sufism privileges are being availed form Prime Minister and the RSS. The Prime Minister is accused of killing over 3000 Muslims in Gujarat. In name of Sufism some business minded people have sold their conscience and Muslims will never forgive such people’ said Maulana Raza.

Inviting Modi to inaugurate this conference in Vigyan Bhawan is synonym to support him, scholars, Sufis, Imams, heads of Khanqaah, and Madarsa should boycott it.

Using the word ‘Sufisim’ to blackmail the sentiments of the masses must be stopped he added.

Modi Government denying information to public, trampling fundamental rights

PM Narendra Modi does not get tired of speaking in words on transparency in the governance but when it comes to action his rhetoric proves to be hollow.

According to the report of the Central Information Commission (CIC) for 2014-15, access to information through the Right to Information (RTI) Act has diminished greatly since new government headed by Narendra Modi came to power at the centre.

In a deliberate attempt to curtail the flow of information by the current regime, there is a significant rise in the number of denial of information sought for reasons other than those permitted under the Act. The level of dissatisfaction with the information provided by public information officers (PIOs) and the reduction in the penalties imposed on PIOs for not furnishing relevant information has also increased.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) accounts for almost all (99%) of rejections under the “other” category.

The Right to Information is derived from our fundamental right of expression under Article 19 of the Constitution of India. If we do not have information on how our Government and Public Institutions function, we cannot express any informed opinion on it

The basic object of the Right to Information Act is to empower the citizens, promote transparency and accountability in the working of the Government, contain corruption, and make our democracy work for the people in real sense. The Act was a big step towards making the citizens informed about the activities of the Government.

It may be noted that under the UPA rule, this law was passed by Parliament on 15 June 2005 and came fully into force on 12 October 2005.

Urdu writers asked to declare: My book not against the govt, nation

The form, received by several Urdu writers and editors over the past few months, also asks authors to provide signatures of two witnesses.

Originally circulated in Urdu, the form, accessed by The Indian Express, reads: “I son/daughter of confirm that my book/magazine titled which has been approved for bulk purchase by NCPUL’s monetary assistance scheme does not contain anything against the policies of the government of India or the interest of the nation, does not cause disharmony of any sort between different classes of the country, and is not monetarily supported by any government or non-government institution.”

It also warns that in case of a breach, the NCPUL can take legal action against the author and take back the monetary assistance.

Urdu writers criticised the form, saying it strives to “strangle dissent”.

“It is an insult to ask an author to get two witnesses to sign a declaration that will curb their freedom of expression,”

“But such a loosely-worded declaration makes everyone vulnerable and can place immense power in the hands of the government to strangle any dissent,”

2002 Gujarat riots and 1984 Sikh riots are different, says Kanhaiya Kumar

Asserting that there is a difference between 2002 riots and 1984 Sikh massacre Kanhaiya alleged that Gujarat violence was carried out through state machinery while the other was caused due to mob frenzy.

JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar has compared the alleged onslaught on varsities with Gujarat riots alleging both of them were carried out "with support" from state machinery even as he stressed that there is a fundamental difference between "emergency" and "fascism".

Asserting that there is a difference between 2002 riots and 1984 Sikh massacre Kanhaiya alleged that Gujarat violence was carried out through state machinery while the other was caused due to mob frenzy.

"There is difference between emergency and fascism. During emergency, goons of only one party were engaged into goondaism, in this (fascism) entire state machinery is resorting to goondaism. There is difference between riots of 2002 and 1984 Sikh riots.

"There is a fundamental difference between a mob killing a common man and massacring people through state machinery. Therefore, the threat of communal fascism we are faced with today, there is an attack being launched on universities, because like Hitler, Modi ji does not have support from intellectuals in India. No intellectual is defending Modi regime," he added.

Noting the present time is an era of "Islamophobia" , Kanhaiya underscored a need for understanding history first before reaching a conclusion on any issue.

"Today its an era of Islamophobia. Leave aside the words of terrorism and terrorist. The moment these words will come to your mind, imprints of face of a Muslim person will be there in your mind. This is Islamophobia.

"Connotations, meaning of a word change. Hence, it is important for us to understand history before we reach to conclusion on anything," he said.

Hate speech accused three times more successful in elections

Candidates with hate speech cases against them were three times more successful in elections compared to those without a criminal record, according to an IndiaSpend analysis of self-disclosed crime records of candidates who have contested various elections nationwide over the last 12 years.

To put these data in perspective, over the last 12 years, 10 percent of candidates with no criminal cases won elections, while the figure was 20 percent for candidates with criminal cases of any kind.

As many as 70 members of parliament (MPs) and members of legislative assemblies (MLAs) have hate speech cases pending against them, according to their own disclosures to the Election Commission (EC) of India.

A season of hate speeches by politicians -- including union ministers, MPs and MLAs -- is underway across India, driven by inflamed, opposing views on nationalism and free speech.

Of course there are similarities - that is undeniable. But there are differences too. The BJP assault on Muslims and Christians is part of an agenda to carry out a fascist transformation of the state, which is not the Congress agenda: Congress is not a fascist party, the BJP is. There is no inherent hatred of Sikhs in Congress ideology, whereas there certainly is hatred of Muslims in BJP ideology. There are plenty of goondas in Congress, but nothing comparable to the way in which Muslims are being lynched on the pretext of carrying out cow slaughter.

2002 Gujarat killings were sponsored by the State Government of Narendra Modi, in collaboration with the RSS cadres. No Muslim who has seen the horrrors of 2002 can ever pardon Modi . It pains to see that the killer combination of Modi and Shah rules India , primarily on the base of their murderous role fourteen years ago.

Why it’s time for Narendra Modi to get real about the economy

Prime ministerial spin notwithstanding, the fact is that 2015-'16 has been a bad year for the Indian economy.

The reality is that like the ocean’s waves, economic waves too are cosmically controlled and prime ministers are like King Canute, who futilely waved his hands about. Happily, most prime ministers realise this and make sure they are seen waving their hands appropriately with the tides of growth and the ebbs of inflation. But once in a while we get a leader who actually believes that the waves are obeying him. That is when we enter dangerous waters.

Numbers speak

Take GDP growth for instance. Few argue that the real GDP growth is 7.4% as the government claims though there have been serious misgivings on how GDP calculations were tweaked to jump growth by a further 2.2%. The present nominal GDP growth is 5.2% and instead of inflation we have a deflation of 2.2% giving a real GDP growth of 7.4%.

The fact is that 2015-'16 has been a bad year for the Indian economy. In the budget for 2015-'16 the government set a nominal GDP growth target of 11.5%. The nominal GDP growth turned out to be just 5.2%, or 6.3% below target. The real GDP growth of 7.4% is because of the collapse of world commodity prices and has little to do with the government’s so-called “prudent policies.” Comparing apples with oranges can only fool some people for some of the time, but not all the people for all the time.

While on apples and oranges, food inflation is the inflation that matters to most people in this country where the average family expends over 60% of its income on food. This inflation has been well over 25%.

Fanciful claims?

In his unspooling of statistics the prime minister made a particular mention of a “smart pick up of credit.” He gave a figure of a pick up by 11.5% in February. Its still March now and it is unusual to get data out that fast. But then a prime minister can always get the data he wants? The fact is that for the last year credit offtake growth for manufacturing has fallen from 21% to 7.1%; construction from 27.4% to 4.1%; mining from 17.1% to a negative 8.2%; industries from 9.6% to 5.2%. Only electricity credit offtake has just about held course by dropping from 13.7% to 12.7%. Maybe February 2016 is the point of inflection. But shouldn’t we wait a bit to see if a trend is in the making?

The prime minister referred to a smart upturn in Foreign Direct Investment and mentioned a figure of $42 billion for the year. It might be so. But Global Financial Integrity, a respected Washington DC based think-tank estimated that last year Indian illicit outflows amounted to $83 billion. Last year Indian entities also officially invested $18 billion overseas as Foreign Direct Investment. So how and where does this leave us?

In his speech, the prime minister also specifically referred to the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana. Jiji Mammen, the CEO of the MUDRA or Micro Units Development and Refinance Agency, claims the agency has disbursed 3.22 crore loans amounting to Rs 1.22 lakh crore. The PM then made the rather far-fetched assumption that every such loan would have created at least one job each. Thus he gets an astounding figure of 32 million jobs created by just MUDRA alone.

2,000 BJP workers associated with jewellery industry ‘quit’

AROUND 2,000 people associated with the jewellery industry in Rajkot “quit” BJP in support of their month-long strike to protest introduction of 1 per cent excise duty on non-silver ornaments, but the party said it has not accepted their resignations.

“Jewellers and people associated with the jewellery industry are with BJP for decades. But today, we submitted our resignation as the party is not listening to our demands. The city president didn’t accept the resignation letters, but we have quit the party,” said Bhaya Saholiya, president of Rajkot Gold Dealers Association, a body of jewellers.

How Narendra Modi helped spread anti-beef hysteria

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s communalism around the Dadri beef lynching is directly buttressed by the prime minister's politics.

Post the Dadri killing, Bharatiya Janata Party leaders and members of Modi’s own government are clearly trying to stoke the embers of this conflagration for political gain. Shrichand Sharma, the vice-president of the BJP’s western Uttar Pradesh unit, wanted the victim’s family booked for cow slaughter right after Akhlaq had been bludgeoned to death. BJP legislator and Muzaffarnagar riots-accused Sangeet Som has threatened to give a “befitting reply” if “innocents were framed” for Akhlaq's murder. Modi’s minister of culture, Mahesh Sharma, absolved the killer mob altogether, declaring their act to be an “accident” and wanted everyone to be grateful that the mob had only killed Akhlaq but not molested his daughter.

Even after this, the prime minister's admirers couldn't bring themselves to blame Modi. Consider, for instance, the response of noted commentator Tavleen Singh. Assigning a curiously passive role to the prime minister, all Singh could say was that Modi “has done nothing to stop them [his bigoted ministers and party members]”.

Modi’s history of gau raksha politics

Not only has he failed to stop his colleagues, Modi had, until not very long ago, enthusiastically joined them in vitiating the atmosphere. When it comes to Modi’s views on cow slaughter, we don't even need to second guess his minister’s statements or his own enigmatic silences. Before taking office as prime minister, Modi had spoken extensively on the matter and his views are on the record.

In fact, one of the major themes of the 2014 General Election campaign was a supposed “pink revolution” that the Congress was promoting, an insidious plan to help slaughter more cows and make money off their meat – a theme that fitted in neatly with the BJP’s evergreen charge of minority appeasement.

Pink revolution

Here’s a translation of a speech delivered by Modi on April 2 in Nawada in Bihar, as part of his 2014 election campaign.
"I am coming from Dwarka city and Dwarka has a direct connection to the Yaduvanshis [referring to Bihar’s Yadav caste]. And because of this connection, I feel at home here. I am therefore shocked that the same Yadavs who worship Shri Krishna, who keeps cows as livestock, who serves the cow, it is their leaders who are in bed with the same people who proudly massacre animals.

We’ve heard of the Green Revolution, we’ve heard of the White Revolution but today’s Delhi sarkar wants neither; they’ve taken up cudgels for a Pink Revolution. Do you know what that is? [points to crowd]. That’s their game; they’re keeping the country in the dark. I want to ask Mulayam Singh Yadav and Lalu Prasad Yadav: do you want to support the people who want to bring about a Pink Revolution?

When you slaughter an animal, then the colour of its meat is pink. This is what they call a “Pink Revolution”. And the Centre said with pride that, last year, India has earned the most from exporting meat. Across the countryside, our animals are getting slaughtered. Our livestock is getting stolen from our villages and taken to Bangladesh. Across India too, there are massive slaughterhouses in operation. And that’s not all. The Delhi sarkar will not give out subsidies to farmers or to Yadavs keeping cows but will give out subsidies to people who slaughter cows, who slaughter animals, who are destroying our rivers of milk, as long as they set up qatlkhanas [slaughterhouses]."

The next day, Modi flew to Ghaziabad, where he made the same speech, drumming up a sinister conspiracy to slaughter cows. Ghaziabad is less than 20 kilometres away from Dadri.

An old campaign

This theme of cow slaughter was repeated again and again through the 2014 campaign. But of course, the genesis of this brand of politics is much older. Whipping up religious passion by raising the bogey of cow slaughter was a part of Narendra Modi’s politics even when he was chief minister of Gujarat.

Addressing the Jain International Trade Organisation, a worldwide body of Jain businessmen and professionals, this is what Narendra Modi had to say in 2012:

"It is the Central government’s dream that they will bring about a Pink Revolution in India and export meat throughout the world. This year, the Centre has itself announced that India is the world’s largest beef exporter. Is this what we pride ourselves on? Brothers and sisters, I don’t know whether this saddens you, but my heart screams out at this. I am unable to understand why you are silent, why you are taking this lying down?"

The same year, his speech on the birth anniversary of Maharana Pratap, one of the foremost historical icons of the Hindu Right, was even more fervent.

“Rana Pratap dedicated his life to gau raksha (cow protection). He fought wars and sacrificed young men to protect the cow. But what is happening today? Even the Supreme Court has said that we need a national cow protection law. But due to vote bank politics, the Central government is refusing to bring in such a law. Brothers and sisters, I recall Maharana Pratap today with pride because my government in Gujarat has brought in a cow protection law.

While we talk of the White Revolution or the Green Revolution do you know what the Central Government is up to? Go to the Internet and read up on it. The Centre’s dream is to bring about a Pink Revolution....To make money, plans are being made to slaughter gaye maa [the mother cow] and it is at moments like this that you remember Rana Pratap (thumps lectern angrily).”

Narendra Modi, therefore, thinks that fighting wars and sacrificing young men over cow slaughter is an example to be emulated. He built a massive – and successful – election campaign that had the ominous “pink revolution” as a key theme. Though Modi is now silent, his party is merely saying the same things he was till 16 months back. As commentator Pratap Bhanu Mehta put it, “Modi should have no doubt that he bears responsibility for the poison that is being spread."

CABBIE LOSES LICENCE AFTER TOURIST TAKES CASE TO PMO

CHEAT IN INDIA: Rs 500 for 1-km airport ride

A year after a Singaporean was overcharged, authorities finally crack down on errant driver, taxi operator.

The culture among Mumbai cabbies to gouge money out of tourists spurred a complaint from Singapore to the Prime Minister's Office, a frantic hunt for a cheating driver and suspension of his licence — a crackdown in which Mirror played a small but important role.

The action against overcharging comes nearly a year after Singaporean Raymond Yeo, 50, took up the issue with the PMO.

Raymond, who visits Mumbai for business and leisure, was charged Rs 500 for a 1-km trip from The Lalit hotel to T2 terminal on April 11, 2015. The driver initially quoted a fare of Rs 200, but demanded more when the trip ended saying Raymond's two suitcases were "excessive baggage".

Raymond paid Rs 500 and later sent a complaint to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's office, which has been trying hard to woo foreign tourists and investors.

The complaint reached the Maharashtra transport commissioner's Bandra office last Monday and the driver, Jamil Ahmad Khan from Marol, was tracked down four days later. He initially denied driving Raymond to the airport, but Mirror helped authorities expose his lie by forwarding his picture that the Singaporean had taken that day.

On Wednesday, Khan's licence was suspended and the tourist travel permit of the cab he drove was withdrawn for 30 days. The cab is owned by Thane's Mahek Tours and Travels, according to RTO officials.

Raymond said he was glad, and a little surprised, that action had been taken over an issue that enrages thousands of cab users in Mumbai day in, day out. "I searched online where I could register a complaint [with the PMO]. I mentioned the taxi's registration number in the complaint. I never expected that the Indian government would look into the issue and take action," he told Mirror from Singapore. "My only objective was to highlight the issue because I have heard from my Indian friends that this happens often and people don't report it."

Raymond works as a sales manager with an electronics firm in Singapore. He checked out of The Lalit on the morning of April 11, 2015, and ordered a ride to the airport around 10.30 am.

Driver refused metre fare

"I hired a private taxi from outside the hotel. I have been to Mumbai before and know that the hotel is barely a kilometre from the international airport. The driver refused to ply by the metre and told me the fare would be Rs 200. I knew I was being cheated, but I was in a hurry to reach the airport so I agreed," Raymond said.

"But when we reached the airport, the driver demanded Rs 500 saying I was carrying excessive luggage. I was shocked as I only had a handbag and two suitcases. I could not believe he was asking more money for the luggage than the journey fare."

Complaint's long journey

Raymond, who was getting late for his flight, argued with Khan briefly before paying him Rs 500. As he walked into the terminal, he decided to report the incident to the PMO.

His complaint described Khan's actions as "pure malpractice and corruption" and stressed on the fact that such incidents were ruining India's image. The complaint made its way to the transport ministry in Delhi on February 16 this year before finally landing in state transport commissioner Shyam Wardhane's office on March 28. It was forwarded to the Thane RTO, where the cab is registered, on March 31.

The inquiry into the complaint once again exposed serious lapses in the vehicle registration process: the Shahpur address listed against the taxi in RTO's files does not exist, officials found. The car's insurance records with the RTO helped them find the correct address. "But we could not find the vehicle owner or the driver at the location," an RTO officer said.

Social activist Binu Varghese came to the RTO's aid. He and a group of volunteers kept a watch near the international airport, from where Khan often picked up customers, for two days. "I shared the cab's licence plate number with the volunteers, one of whom spotted the car on April 2 and rang me up," he said.

RTO officers soon reached the spot and seized the cab. Khan told officials he didn't own the vehicle and he had started driving it only recently. Another driver with the cab firm may have overcharged Raymond.

On Wednesday, Raymond shared a picture of Khan he had clicked with Mirror. We forwarded it to Varghese, who confirmed with RTO officers that Khan was the same driver that overcharged Raymond.

"We have suspended the cab owner's permit for 30 days and are considering to cancel it permanently. We have asked Andheri RTO to suspend the driver's licence," said Thane deputy RTO Hemangini Patil.

Former Crime Branch officer Sachin Waze said NGO 'Support' had launched a drive to identify cars registered on fake addresses. "We have identified over 100 cars. We hope the campaign will help prevent incidents in which tourists are fleeced," he said.
