This is why Modi has sent an invitation to Nawaz Sharif

After spewing continuous venom against Pakistan all these years and during the run up to the general elections 2014, Narendra Modi sent an invite to Pakistan PM for his swearing-in ceremony. The real reason is not peace, but Adani.

Adani Power wants Narendra Modi Government’s nod for export of electricity to Pakistan, reports Financial Express. Adani Power is planning to set up a 10,000-MW thermal power plant in the Kutch region of Gujarat and the bulk of the electricity to be produced from it is likely to be exported to Pakistan. The company, a part of the $8.7-billion Adani Group, is country’s leading private sector thermal power producer with a current capacity of 8,520 MW. The ports-to-power group has plans to ramp up electricity production by over 10,000 MW by this financial year.

While the initial investment would be around Rs 13,000 crore, for ramping up the capacity to 10,000 MW a total of Rs 40,000 crore would be required, according to the source. The project is likely to be implemented by Kutch Power Generation Company Limited (KPGCL), a Adani Power subsidiary. KPGCL would be responsible for generation, evacuation and transmission of electricity. The company is learnt to have acquired land at Bhadreshwar in Kutch for the project, according to sources.

Adani Power has reported a net profit of Rs 2,529 crore for the fourth quarter ended March 31, 2014, against a net loss of Rs 585.52 crore in the corresponding quarter in the previous fiscal. According to a company statement, its consolidated EBIDTA has risen to Rs 4859 crore in FY14, which is an increase of 322 per cent.

Last week the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence had slapped a Rs 5,500-crore show cause notice on the Adani Group for alleged over-valuation of capital equipment imports. Also last week the firm announced purchase of the Dhamra Port in Orissa.

Everything Mr Modi says is to pamper the emotions of his vote bank. Everything Mr Modi does is to benefit the corporations and help them loot our nation’s natural resources. No wonder, Mukesh Ambani has added $6 billion to his fortune since September 13, 2013 when Narendra Modi was named BJP’s PM candidate, reports Bloomberg. The wealth of Gautam Adani quadrupled to $7.6 billion, from $1.9 billion on September 13. That’s over $25 million per day in a nation where some 800 million people live on less than $2. True, good days have actually arrived for some. Nation’s much hyped ‘lost self-respect’ may rest till the next elections.

The RSS blueprint for Narendra Modi

Earlier this week, as I sat before the television set to watch Modi’s swearing in ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, I was convinced more than ever that this was the victory of the RSS, which had left no stone unturned in ensuring Modi’s astounding victory. The presence of Sadhvi Rithambara and Indresh Kumar in the first row allotted for dignitaries spoke volumes.

Indresh Kumar, a senior RSS member, was named in the Samjhauta blasts case as one of the accused and conspirators. The blasts were earlier blamed on Muslim groups. Sadhvi Rithambara, one must remember, was indicted for her role in the Ayodhya movement and the ensuing riots for her provocative speeches, instigating the crowd to demolish the Babri Masjid that saw nationwide polarisation between Hindus and Muslims.

In 2010, when the Anna Hazare-led India against Corruption movement made its foray onto the national stage, members of the core team, as it came to be revealed later, had clandestine meetings with senior RSS leaders. With names like Subramaniam Swamy, Kiran Bedi, Govindacharya, Baba Ramdev, and Ram Jethmalani aligning themselves to the movement, which held its first massive protest at Parliament Street, it became clear, the movement had covert support from the Sangh Parivaar. In fact, in a report I filed in 2011, a senior RSS leader had confessed that most of the cadres in the movement were part of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and various branch-outs of the Sangh.

Mohan Bhagwat, the RSS chief and the second rung leaders of the organisation were miffed that the BJP had not been able to rake the corruption and black money issue.

Another unofficial think tank with friends in the IB, RAW and Friends of the BJP overseas was set up in Delhi which sought the opinion of officers like AK Doval, now set to be the national security advisor in the Modi dispensation. Doval enjoys patronage by the RSS for having set up deshbhakt counterparts to Dawood Ibrahim in the form of the Chhota Rajan gang, whose proximity with Doval has been an open secret.

The India Policy foundation was at the forefront of devising strategy for Modi, including liaising with senior BJP leaders, galvanising RSS cadres and distributing literature. On its board are senior RSS leaders like Suresh Soni, Bajrang Lal Gupta, Manmohan Vaidya and Dattatreya Hosbole, who played a critical role in strengthening Modi’s candidature for the post of the PM before the Goa conclave.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajrang Dal and other forces of the Sangh parivaar were asked to be united for a common cause. At a meeting of state level cadres, at which senior VHP leaders were also present, a Sarsanghchalak said, “This is the time for us to unite, this is the time to come to power. Leave your differences aside, it’s now or never.”

It came as no surprise then that on the day of Modi’s swearing in, everything organised by the BJP had the mark of the RSS. Of the 23 cabinet ministers who were sworn in, a staggering 17 have their roots in the RSS and its affiliate organisations. The second in command to Modi in the Cabinet, Rajnath Singh, who will handle the significant Home department, is the Sangh’s consensus guy in the party. It was Rajnath who helped seal Modi’s candidature, and with great manoeuvring punctured the rebellion led by Advani.

On the day of the exit polls and later, after getting a strong mandate, Rajnath held closed door meetings with top Sangh leaders. Each and every cabinet level leader who has been sworn in was approved by the RSS top brass, including a reminder to Modi that the core issues of Hindutva, for which the cadres worked, would have to be brought to effect.

Fringe voices within the Sangh parivaar, including Askok Singhal of the VHP, have decided to convey his message to the PM in public – Ram Mandir should be made a priority. Indresh Kumar, who made attempts to be one of the co-hosts at the swearing in ceremony, stated that he looked forward to being cleared of all charges just like Sadhvi Pragya, and Modi, the Prithviraj Chauhan of Hindus, had to act.

Both Pragya and Indresh Kumar have reasons to be optimistic. In a shocking move, the Gujarat state government has reinstated three top Gujarat and Rajasthan officers accused of murder and conspiracy by the CBI in the last two weeks. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has just begun reading the rule book of the RSS for the new government -he has five years of rule ahead of him.

ALIGARH: After the resounding mandate for the BJP in the 16th Lok Sabha elections, some Muslims in Aligarh are trying to shape the community's response to the new political reality, urging the community to shed any "Congress nostalgia".

Referring to minority affairs minister Najma Heptullah's comments that Muslims were not a minority group in India, Rashid Shaz, leader of the Milli Parliament, an organization formed after the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya in 1992, said, "Nehru's secularism was like a mirage, a trail of false hopes. The minority status created a psychological shell in the minds of Indian Muslims. If for 65 years someone keeps telling you that you are a minority, what will your mind be like? Congress wallowed in electoral gains earned by demonizing the 'political other', the BJP. Now, that dark era of pseudo-secularism is over."

Shaz said the biggest benefit of having Narendra Modi as prime minister would be the reduced significance of mullahs who earlier issued pronouncements to the community ahead of elections.

"A big benefit would be the fall of the mullahs or middlemen who appropriated the Muslim mind... Seeing Modi's leadership, there is little chance of any middleman's survival. That will make Muslims use their own brains," Shaz said.

The communal riots during the rule of secular parties, illegal bans on Muslim organizations, the arbitrary arrest of Muslim youth, and the refusal of a judicial inquiry into the Batla House encounter -- all this is being read as a Congress conspiracy against the community.

"The new political reality may look depressing, but at least we are able to see today where we really stand," a member of the Milli Parliament said.

Joining these Muslim intellectuals in the cry against the Congress is the Forum for Muslim Studies and Analysis, comprising academics from the Aligarh Muslim University.

Speaking of the record of the Congress in dealing with issues related to the community, Shabuddin Iraqi, former chairperson of the history department of the AMU, said, "The cause of Muslim upliftment was not taken seriously. Instead, the Congress created Muslim poster boys like Salman Khurshid."

Leaders like Khurshid lacked an understanding of the problems faced by the community and kept busy "appeasing the Congress high command," Iraqi said.

Prime Minister Modi's remarks that his win was the victory of India's 1.25 billion, and that he wants to build an India of the 21st century, has found resonance with Muslim intellectuals in Aligarh. These remarks are seen as a gesture to connect with the community.

"We too are open to a meaningful dialogue, as the community feels no nostalgia for the Congress," Shaz said.

Now since Narendra Modi is the Prime Minister of India, will Muslims be thrown out into the sea? Will Muslims be systematically persecuted? Will Muslims be threatened with Hindu conversion?

Such were the fears generated by various secular parties against Modi during the election campaign and even before. Muslims could not come out of this phobia.

Undoubtedly, Muslims are shaken. Now what should Muslims do? Should they go back to past or look forward to future? Should they still look askance? Or should they begin a new chapter in history?

The new Prime Minister of India has already assured of being like a father-figure for all and a leader of 1.25 billion people.

In my assessment, a Hindu India is better for Muslim community. Under the leadership of Narendra Modi, a large section of Hindus feel they have been elevated to the honorable degree of respect in the glory of Hinduism.

Unquestionably, Modi is a proud emblem of Hindu struggle. His ability to articulate the collectivization of Hindu castes into a single supreme community is remarkable.

This extraordinary Hindutva accomplishment, most Hindus feel, was denied to them by Muslims by aligning with secular forces since Independence.

Thus, the widening gulf between the two communities will be minimized as Muslims will no longer be seen as a hurdle to the will and wish of Hindutva goals.

Second, Hindus' agony to view Muslims as their competitors will come to a realistic end. Is 13 per cent of Muslims any match against 80 per cent of Hindus? But the stupidity and recklessness of Muslim leaders like those of Azam Khan, Akbaruddin Owaisi, Kazmi and others have reinforced that assumption.

Third, the frequency of communal violence will come down to a zero level as Muslims will no longer be a factor in the scheme of vote-bank politics. This will herald cementing of social ties between the two communities, and Muslims will surely benefit from the new harmony.

Fourth, a new channel of communication is likely to open between Hinduism and Islam for greater understanding as both have been denied a chance to come closer by divisive forces.

Fifth, Muslims will no longer be a marginalized community in terms of acceptability by a large section of Hindus as leader of the victorious party has already expressed his desire to bring Muslims back to their fold by affection and love.

The change has already begun. It has brought a new hope. Muslims should be a part of this change. Well! They may not have voted for the BJP but the silence of the community is the voice of its optimism and has expectations from the new government.

When asked about Modi's win, Abdul Majid Sheikh, a businessman in Libya, said: "Muslims may not have voted for the victorious party but we were also greatly disappointed with the Congress. The change has brought new faces on political screen. We hope they do not ignore us."

As a Muslim, personally I feel liberated at the victory of Narendra Modi, for I am no longer to be seen as a hindrance to the fulfillment of Hindutva ambitions.

Last but not the least, we hope a new Modi India includes all and excludes none.

“I thought he had asked me to come because of friendship. Now, it seems he is worse than the previous ones. I will have to learn Hindu because he does not know English. If he bullies us that much at the very first meeting, it is sure he will finish us off within a year or so. Not a single Indian should be trusted,” saying thus, president Mahinda Rajapaksa played havoc at Temple Trees yesterday (29) morning upon his return from India, say Temple Trees internal sources.

Those abdes who think that QJ presented smart leadership is mistaken. QJ or SMS gang is flattering NaMo for personal gains as well as to keep abdes and bohras in check. They are cementing their authority by all means, internally and externally. This friendship is going to benefit SMS gang by leaps and bounds in years to come with property acquisitions, real estate developments and crushing opposition. In turn NaMo too will benefit by popularity vote in front of hindu liberals by showing off his liberalism towards muslim community.

SMS and NaMo both wants to polarize their people and keep them secluded to exploit them for their means. Noose around the necks of abdes and bohras are going to get tighter with SMS to lead “spiritually” and NaMo to lead politically.

Micro level, few abdes who are useful to kothar will benefit from SMS – NaMo government. Rest, it will be sweet smooth talks from both sides, as usual keeping abdes in euphoria of “fateh-mubeen” and being sheltered by “Rehbars” against any communal riots or prejudices

India's Newest Media Baron Embraces Censorship

Bold initiatives characterize India’s richest man, Mukesh Ambani, who famously lives in a 27-story building in Mumbai, a city where most people languish in slums. Last month, his company, Reliance Industries Ltd., sought to prevent circulation of a new book which claims that Reliance successfully pressured the previous Indian government to double the price of natural gas. Amazon received a cease and desist notice, as did even an individual who had merely forwarded an e-mail invitation to the book’s launch. And Thursday, Ambani moved to buy a whole swath of the Indian media: Bloomberg News reports that Reliance, which has already invested $11 billion in a high-speed cellular network, will now spend $678 million for majority stakes in two major media companies, Network18 Media & Investments Ltd. and TV18 Broadcast Ltd.

The news was preceded by a series of high-level departures from these companies, which have tie-ups with, among others, CNN, CNBC, Viacom, A&E Networks and Forbes. Two of India’s most prominent anchors in English, Rajdeep Sardesai and Sagarika Ghose, both at CNN-IBN, are reportedly also on their way out.

What’s striking is that Reliance already controlled the two companies through a uniquely Indian system of surrogate ownership. As a long investigative story in the magazine The Caravan revealed last year, it had also enforced the transformation of major news channels and websites into propaganda outlets for Narendra Modi and his right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party.

Here is what happened when Vivian Fernandes, a journalist employed by CNBC, was sent to Gujarat to interview Modi:

A person involved with the production of the interview recalled that Fernandes asked Modi a difficult question about water conservation in Gujarat. Modi’s organisers had asked to see the questions before the interview, and demanded the water conservation question’s removal. When Fernandes sprung it on him anyway, Modi broke away from the camera and glared at a public relations executive in the room. “Why is he talking like this?” the person recalled Modi saying. “Are we not paying for this interview?” The production crew realised that the interview was part of a promotion for Modi.

In February, amid reports that she was being pressured to tone down her criticism of Modi, Ghose tweeted, "There is an evil out there, an evil which is stamping out all free speech and silencing independent journalists: journalists unite!" The anti-corruption campaigner Arvind Kejriwal says that his attacks on Ambani led the media to abruptly mute its coverage of him.

Whatever the truth of these specific claims, the campaign by India’s corporate-owned media to promote Modi clearly worked. The tainted chief minister of Gujarat with a record of showering favors on big businessmen has emerged, within a few hectic months, as India’s messiah.

Conspiracy theorists can only marvel at the fact that Gautam Adani, one of Modi’s stalwart corporate supporters, has tripled his wealth, according to Bloomberg, since September 2013, when Modi's party anointed him as its prime ministerial candidate. Ambani gained $800 million in a single day after exit polls earlier this month declared Modi the winner. Indeed, both Ambani and Adani graced Modi’s recent swearing-in ceremony in Delhi. Modi himself hinted at a more emboldened and enlarged crony capitalist regime when he was flown from Gujarat to the ceremony -- presented by an ardent media as a coronation -- on a private corporate jet emblazoned with the name of Adani.

Of course, the margin of his victory makes irrelevant the fact that in the run-up to the elections Modi received more than seven times more coverage on prime-time television than his closest rival, the hapless Rahul Gandhi of the Congress party. But there is no denying that the future of media freedom in India looks even bleaker than ever after Ambani’s Silvio Berlusconi-style domination of both news and entertainment content and delivery mechanisms. At the very least, such violation of the rules of the free market should be exposed to intense public scrutiny, even criticism, of the kind the deal between Comcast and Time Warner has provoked in the U.S.

But a near-total silence from politicians and the mainstream media greeted, as I've noted above, the extraordinary doubling of gas prices in India. When Reliance attempted to throttle the book about it, those columnists who had denounced Penguin for agreeing to withdraw Wendy Doniger’s "The Hindus: An Alternative History" went oddly quiet. And given the "toadification" of large parts of the Indian media, to paraphrase Salman Rushdie, it may even croak out some malicious joy as more independent-minded journalists depart what does look increasingly like a toad-breeding swamp.

Dawoodi Bohras have always been known for their business gene. But few know they are being choked by a tyrannical and all-powerful religious head. Anumeha Yadav reports how every attempt to rein him in is crushed

THE BOHRA Muslims have always been read through a dominant stereotype: their capacity for business. That’s probably one reason why even chief minister Narendra Modi has found it convenient to reach out to them as part of his PR measures to improve his scoreboard with Muslims in Gujarat. But few Indians would know that the Dawoodi Bohras have been living with — and fighting — deeply suffocating customs under the regime of their spiritual head, the 100-year old Syedna Mohamed Burhanuddin.

This February, when the Syedna turned 100, one of his seven sons, Huzefa Mohiuddin, walked in for the celebrations in Ahmedabad with Chief Minister Narendra Modi and BJP leaders Vijay Rupani, Asit Vohra and Jayanti Barot. Inside the brightly- lit hall, Mohiuddin praised governance in ‘vibrant Gujarat’. Modi related anecdotes about his closeness with the Syedna over the years. Cell phone cameras clicked. Jointly holding the knife, Modi and Mohiuddin cut a cake to chants of Allaho- Akbar, and congratulated each other.

Modi’s attempts to appear more palatable to minorities by playing footsie with this sect are fairly recent. But those Bohras, who have been trying to resist the Syedna’s chokehold over their civil rights, say they have for decades witnessed their priest grow more powerful with covert support from various state and Central governments and corporate giants. Political expediency takes precedence over reform.

The Syedna, who is the wealthiest of all Muslim clergy, has used his ties with Muslim leaders to serve his own ends, resisting any government scrutiny by raising the bogey of interference in minority culture.

Pune: Seven people associated with the Hindu Rashtra Sena, a radical outfit in Maharashtra, have been arrested in Pune in connection with the alleged murder of a young IT professional in the city.

24-year-old Mohsin Sadiq Shaikh was attacked on Sunday evening when he was returning home with a friend after dinner, the police said.

The police suspect the attack on Shaikh, who is from Solapur in the state, was related to tension in the city over the derogatory depiction of Maratha king Shivaji and Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray in pictures shared on Facebook and Whatsapp.

Shaikh's brother Mobin Shaikh alleged that his brother was attacked by a large group of men who brutally beat him to the ground with rods and hockey sticks and kept attacking him even as he lay wounded. He also alleged that his friend was not attacked because "he had no beard."

"We have arrested seven people who are all from the Hindu Rashtra Sena. But there were about 20-25 who attacked him with hockey sticks and rods. We will be making more arrests," Deputy Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil told NDTV.

Those arrested will be taken to court today, where the police will seek that they be remanded in their custody.

Pune is now calm and the police described the situation as normal. Over the last two days, nearly 200 public buses and private vehicles were damaged.

The Congress, which rules Maharashtra, has said they "strongly condemn" the young man's killing.

FB post shuts down Pune

A controversial Facebook post that contained defamatory pictures with allegedly derogatory references to warrior king Shivaji Maharaj, late Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray and others, provoked violent protests on Sunday by workers of the Shiv Sena, BJP, and right-wing organisation Hindu Rashtra Sena. In the unrest, 24 out of 33 police stations were affected on Saturday night and Sunday.

During the night, miscreants pelted stones at vehicles and damaged 130 PMPML buses and 21 private vehicles, as also set fire to one bus, tempo and the motorbike of a police beat marshall. Shops were also torched. Protests were also given a communal colour by damaging religious places of a minority community in Ganeshnagar near Bopkhel, Landewadi in Bhosari, Lohegaon, Sayyednagar in Hadapsar and Phursungi.

Groups were seen waving saffron flags in motorbike rallies and raising slogans in several areas. Members of these parties forced traders to down their shutters, after cops got the US-based social network to remove the controversial post on Saturday night.

"There were 52 such incidents, and we registered 34 cases. In terms of property damage, Bhosari was worst affected.

In its Noor Mohalla locality, 24 vehicles were damaged and attempts were made to set fire to four bikes."

"The post spread like wildfire through WhatsApp. Rumourmongers took advantage of the situation and started spreading false alarms. Stone pelting went on till well past 2 am," a senior police officer told Mirror.

The photo of young Nikhil Tikone did the rounds on WhatsApp on Saturday night under the name of 'Nihal Khan', who reportedly posted the pictures. It was only on Sunday afternoon that it was cleared that he was Tikone, a resident of Kasba Peth where he was beaten up.

Affected areas where stone pelting took place were mainly located to the city's north, like Hinjewadi, Pimpri, Chinchwad, Bhosari, Khadki, Yerwada, Pune-Ahmednagar Road, Kharadi, Wanowrie, Hadapsar. Various parts of Pune district — Loni Kalbhor, Wagholi, Wadgaon Maval and Lonavla — were also affected, with highways including the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and Pune-Ahmednagar Highway being blocked. "We arrested 53 and registered 27 cases.

BJP begins unmasking its real face by initiating “saffronisation” of text books

As expected, the new BJP government at the Center has started unmasking its real face by initiating “Saffronisation” programme of text books in the garb of protecting the ancient heritage. The new Human Resources Development Minister Smriti Irani, who was in news for wrong reason after assuming the charge, wants introducing the Hindu perspective in the education system. Sources said she has asked her ministry officials to develop educational material that encapsulates the contribution of ancient Indians in different fields like science, mathematics, social sciences, philosophy, grammar and language. It is also learnt that the ministry is planning to set up a committee to study the ancient Hindu texts, Vedas, Upanishads and other epics to select relevant material for teaching. She brought this up during detailed interactions with senior bureaucrats in the past two days. She also articulated her desire to preserve the ancient culture and heritage of the country, sources said. This is being seen as an attempt by the government to push through the RSS’ educational revamp agenda.

It to be recalled that a group of eminent academics and intellectuals had demanded last year for setting up a national commission for evaluating and vetting textbooks in Social Sciences and Humanities to check the increasing “Saffronisation” of textbooks in Karnataka and other states. For example, a story in Karnataka text book inserted narrating pledge of tiger as it says he will never eat the flesh of cow.

Historians Romila Thapar, Mushirul Hasan, former West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi, JNU’s Dr Zoya Hasan, Director CSDS Rajeev Bhargava, senior journalist B G Verghese, playwright and actor Girish Karnad had said in a statement that “Various distortions of fact, interpretation and emphasis have crept into certain history and social science textbooks in Karnataka and other states that contain elements of “Saffronisation” and valorisation of specific regional heroes, ethnic identities and faith-based communities in a manner that do not do justice to or even denigrate others. This has happened in Maharashtra, Punjab and elsewhere (as cited by the CABE Committee of 2005 on non-governmental text books taught in private schools, chaired by Prof Zoya Hasan), and others.

Now the BJP got absolute majority in the Lower House, academics fear that it will pursue the Saffronisation agenda with much vigor as it had tried to do during its earlier rule in late nineties.

‘The first wicket has fallen’ Hindu Rashtra Sena sent sms after killing Mohsin Sadiq Shaikh

It may be called the height of inhumanity if we believe it. Now new details are emerging in connection to the murder of Muslim IT engineer Mohsin Sadiq Shaikh who was killed by the radicals of Hindu Rashtra Sena .

An SMS exchanged by the killers has confirmed that Mohsin Sadiq Shaikh was targetted for being a Muslim. According to a report on Hindustan Times, the killers exchanged the following message after killing Shaikh which read, ‘Pahili wicket padli’ (The first wicket has fallen.) The report quotes Pune joint commissioner of police Sanjay Kumar as saying, “The message was circulated immediately after about 25 members of the Hindu extremist outfit allegedly bludgeoned Shaikh to death.”

The police are now probing if this was a pre-planned attack given the message that was exchanged and that the crowd had attacked Shaikh with “hockey sticks and stones.” Shaikh’s friend Riyaz had told Indian Express that Shaikh was attacked because he was wearing a skull cap. Shaikh’s brother Mobin has also confirmed that his brother was targetted because he very clearly appeared to be Muslim. He told Indian Express, “While returning, Mohsin was driving the bike while Riyaz was riding pillion. Suddenly, about 15 men came on motorcycles, shouting slogans…As soon as they saw Mohsin they stopped his bike and started beating him up. They didn’t touch Riyaz. Mohsin had a beard and was wearing a skull cap. Riyaz had none.

Mohsin has nothing to do with the uploading of derogatory pictures on social networking site Facebook but had to pay the price for having a Muslim look.

The foreign hand

A report details the means adopted by the United States-based India Development and Relief Fund to collect funds from U.S. corporates and channel them to Hindu fundamentalist organisations.

AFFILIATES of the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) have been receiving millions of dollars from corporates in the United States to instigate communal violence and propagate the Hindutva ideology in Gujarat and other parts of the country. This was exposed by the Campaign to Stop Funding Hate (SFH), a group of professionals, students, workers, artists and intellectuals. They have identified the India Development and Relief Fund (IDRF), a Maryland-based charity organisation established in 1989, as the key fund-raiser for the Sangh Parivar in the U.S. SFH says that the IDRF, which was set up to provide funds for `relief and development work', has been funding RSS-initiated projects all over India. In 2000, around $1.7 million was channelled to Sangh Parivar organisations such as the Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram (VKA), which has been linked with anti-minority violence. Between 1994 and 2000, the IDRF disbursed close to $4 million to Sangh Parivar organisations all over India.

The report reveals how the IDRF obtained considerable amounts from leading U.S. technology companies such as Cisco, Sun Microsystems, AOL-Time Warner and Hewlett Packard and distributed it among RSS affiliates. While 83 per cent of the funds went to the RSS, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and other Sangh Parivar organisations, only 2 per cent went to secular organisations.

When collecting money, the IDRF professed that it was doing so to `fund relief and development work'. Actually, the funds were distributed among RSS organisations dealing with reconversion programmes and efforts to Hinduise society. For example, the IDRF's website claims that it is a charity organisation that has helped the victims of the Gujarat earthquake of 2001. However, the fact remains that it used the funds to help only Hindu victims.

The IDRF has not announced any relief for victims of the communal violence in Gujarat. In fact, it contributed to the violence by channelling its funds to the VKA and the Vivekananda Kendra, which have been working to communalise the tribal people and create an anti-Muslim ethos. (The SFH report noted that a "surprise element" in the anti-minority violence in Gujarat was the "active participation" of tribal people in it.)

According to the report, the links between the IDRF and the RSS go beyond financial support. Several office-bearers of the IDRF are associated with Sangh Parivar organisations in India. The founder-members of the IDRF include Bhishma Agnihotri, an RSS ideologue and a leader of the Hindu Swayamsewak Sangh (HSS), the equivalent of the RSS in the U.S. and the United Kingdom.

How does the IDRF operate in the U.S.? The most active fund-raisers of the IDRF are the Indian migrants to the U.S., especially professionals working in the software sector. Such IDRF sympathisers encourage their companies to put the IDRF on the corporation's list of grantees. The swayamsewaks working in U.S. corporations project the IDRF as the `best' and the `only' way to provide funds for `development and relief' work in India. One company that unwittingly funded the IDRF is Cisco.

THE SFH's report has once again placed the spotlight on the larger question of growth of Hindutva outside India. In the U.S., the Sangh Parivar and its affiliates have grown over the years, entrenching themselves in the West Coast, the North East and the southern States of Florida and Texas. These are pockets where the Indian diaspora of professionals is concentrated. Besides disseminating its nefarious ideology, the Sangh Parivar concentrates on collecting funds from the NRI community. What is a cause of growing concern is the systematic infiltration of U.S. universities by the Sangh Parivar organisations. The organisations target members of the second-generation Indian Americans, who are approached with the objective of bringing them under the influence of Hindutva.

The meetings of the Sangh Parivar organisation, National Students' Forum in the U.K. and the Hindu Students' Council (HSC) in the U.S. have grown from innocuous get-togethers to meeting places for right-wingers. The HSC, which has branches in more than 50 universities in the U.S., was launched in 1988, when its first chapter was set up in the University of Maryland.

Kerala college magazine puts Modi in list of most cruel people; booked

Thrissur (Kerala): The Kerala police have registered a case against the editorial team of a college magazine which placed Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a list of the world's most cruel people, a police official said Tuesday.

A case was registered against those responsible for editing the magazine at the Government Polytechnic Kunnamkulam for placing Modi's picture among the world's most cruel people list in the magazine, a police official from the Kunnamkulam police station told IANS here.

Modi's picture was placed among people like former Al Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden, terrorist Ajmal Kasab, captured during the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks and former German dictator Adolf Hitler.

Asaduddin Owaisi tears into PM Modi over Gujarat riots, Akshardham terror attack

Hyderabad Member of Parliament and president of Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen Asaduddin Owaisi Wednesday tore into Prime Minister Narendra Modi over Gujarat riots and Aksharham terror attack, and asked if he would apologise to innocent Muslims who languished in jail for years for no fault of theirs.

"Will the Prime Minister, who was then the Home Minister of Gujarat, apologise to the innocent Muslims who were wrongly arrested in Akshardham terror case and spent more than 11 yrs in jail for no faults of theirs", Owaisi said while participating in the debate on President's address to the joint parliamentary session.

In a high pitch seven and half minute speech, Asaduddin Owaisi sought justice for the innocent victims who were killed in police encounters and Gujarat riots.

"I stand before you as the son of Ehsan Jafri. I stand before you as the brother of Ishrat Jahan. I stand before you as the uncle of Sadiq. I stand before you as the voice of countless poor and voiceless people affected by Gujarat genocide and I want justice to be done to those poor souls", Owaisi said eve as MPs treasury benches tried to shout him down.

Referring to Minority Affairs Minister Najma Heptullah's remarks made a day after the government formation, Owaisi asked Prime Minister Modi to explain to the house the stand of his government vis-à-vis minorities.

"You talk about making the minorities equal partner in this country. How? Your own minister on the very first day of the government formation says Muslims are not minorities. Am I supposed to believe that the minority ministry has been created for 80,000 Parsis only? That cannot be the case", he said.

Stating that Article 29 & 30 of the constitution has clearly defined linguistic and religious minorities and have given them rights, Owaisi asked Modi to explain to the house his stand over Sikhs and Buddhists who have also been defined as minorities.

Criticising Ram Vilas Paswan who while participating in the debate said people should stop from harping about Godhra riots, Owaisi said, "Jisme insaniyat hai woh in waqeat ko yaad rakhe ga... Jisme insaniyat hai woh in katilon ko kabhi maaf nahi karega."

He also said that the way things appear today the day was not far when Nathuram Godse, the man who had assassinated Mahatma Gandhi would be awarded 'Veer Chakra'. "

There are four incidents which shook the foundation of this country. Assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, murder and Genocide of Sikhs and Dalits, destruction of Babri Masjid and 2002 Gujarat riots.

"If that is the case, then the day is not far when this august house will give, if not Bharat Ratna, Veer Chakra to Nathuram Godse", he said.

Commenting on BJP's landslide victory in the 2014 General Election, Owaisi said, "I want to congratulate the honourable prime minister for breaking the myth of Muslim vote bank."

But at the same time he added, "But there is a Hindu vote bank which people don't want to talk about. What you have done in process. You consolidated the Hindu votes in your favour. I congratulate you for this", he said.

Protesting BJP members tried to shout down but unperturbed by vociferously protest, Owaisi noted there are very few Muslim representatives from BJP in the Lok Sabha.

"Where is the pluralism and diversity?" he asked and demanded that the Prime Minister make it clear what he proposed to do for the minorities.

Owaisi also mentioned the issue of murder of a young techie in Pune, saying, "I want justice to be done to the poor souls."

Report of Sadbhavana Padyatra in Pune on 15th June, 2014

A sadbhavana padyatra or march from Gadital to Gandhi chowk took place in Pune on 15th June to show solidarity with Mohsin Shaikh who was lynched to death by miscreants of Hindu Rashtra Sena earlier this month. The march got a strong response with around 1000 people being present for the march. This march was organized by Rashtriya Ekatmata Samiti which is headed by Baba Addav. Activists and youth walked the distance holding banners and posters saying ‘We are Indians and we are proud of it’, ‘Unity in Diversity’. After this march everyone gathered at Gandhi chowk where prominent activists like Manisha Gupte, Anvar Rajan, Shamshudin Tamboli, Suresh Khopade, Baba Addav and others expressed their condemnation of the killing of the innocent youth. The underlying message of all the speakers was that this killing under the pretext of morphed pictures of Shivaji and Ambedkar was with the intention to polarize communities and fan communal violence. This was a hate crime owing to misconceptions and stereotypes spread regarding the Muslim community. However due to the valiant efforts of peace activists who appealed for peace and stopped the communities to engage in any conflict, no communal violence took place.

The activists appealed to the state government to carry out the investigations into the murder impartially and bring the culprits to justice. The other demand was compensation to the family of Mohsin Shaikh and to the owners of the bakeries and other establishments which were attacked and vandalized by the Hindu Rashtra Sena. Suresh Khopade emphasized on sensitization of police to prevent and deal with such violence effectively. Everyone urged all the citizens to not believe any rumors and engage in any violence. Solidarity and compassion will not let such hate crimes and divisive politics prevail. The March ended with observing silence for Mohsin Shaikh.

Hate Crimes and Communal Polarization

Ram Puniyani

The Modi Sarkar has been installed in power from last three weeks or so (May 16, 2014). While there is lots of hope from this government by sections of society, there are other types of fears which have started getting actualized and the consequences of that are being felt with great amount of horror. After the morphed images of Bal Thackeray and Shivaji
were uploaded on social sites a well planned attack on Muslim minorities was orchestrated in Pune. In this attack the rampaging mobs not only paralyzed the city, they also attacked mosques and torched at least 200 public and private vehicles. The culmination of this was the public lynching of an IT professional, Mohsin Shiekh, an IT manager from Sholapur, a resident of Pune. He was brutally killed by a mob of Hindu Rashtra Sena, led by Dhanajay Desai. This is ‘Hate crime’ of worst order.

While this act has shaken the minority community and civic society groups have condemned it, the Prime Minister of the country has chosen to keep mum on the issue for a long time. Maharashtra Government is treating it as a law-and order problem, which defies all the logic. The overall observation is that a large section of the minority community is feeling terrorized ever since the Modi Sarkar has come to power. In Pune region, from last two weeks or so the minority homes and prayer halls are being vandalized and a section of supporters of the ideology of ruling party is feeling emboldened to no end. It is in this backdrop that murder of the Pune techie, who was wearing the Muslim identity has come as a warning signal for those who want to strive for communal harmony, national integration and the affirmation of the rights of religious minorities to live with equal honor and dignity. This incident has intensified ripples of fear leading to many from the minority community shaving off their beards.

In some ways this seems to be repeating the experiment in communal divide brought in by communal forces in UP, Muzzafarnagar. One recalls that a fracas of road accident was given the expression of ‘violation of the honor of our girls’, ‘love jihad’ and a video clip was uploaded by BJP MLA. This led to the horrific violence and the consequent polarization of communities along religious lines and a massive victory of BJP in UP. Amit Shah has been credited with the victory in UP and now in the wake of forthcoming Assembly elections in Maharashtra on one side the state BJP unit wants same Amit Shah to come here to Maharashtra and on the other the forces like Hindu Rashtra Sena have unleashed the anti minority programs like the heinous crime against the Muslim techie in Pune.

Communal violence and crimes have been the real polarizing factors in our society. Even in the preceding Lok Sabha elections, while apparently it seems that the agenda of development has given the victory to Mr. Modi, the fact is that communal polarization was working in the background. That’s how Modi brought forward the issue of article 370, Bangladeshi immigrants and the pink revolution. How much role this polarization played in the general elections is a matter of conjecture. All said and done communal polarization has been a major tool in the hands of communal parties. In Gujarat we saw the polarization brought around the Godhra train burning leading to Gujarat violence in which over 80% of those who got killed were the one’s from minority community. This violence brought in the polarization and the BJP government which was tottering till then became firmly planted in the seat of power.

It’s true that the issues which lead to communal violence-polarization keep changing over a period of time, while some of these continue to haunt in an ongoing fashion. In colonial India the major issues related to taking a procession with music band in front of a mosque, the issue of pork being thrown in mosque and beef in the temple were the other major ones. In
Godhra, it was a accidental burning of a train propagated as terrorist attack, in Mumbai it was the victory celebration over Babri demolition. While some of these issues are kept in the forefront, the others issues’ related to temple destructions in the past, alleged cruelty of Muslim kings, the jazia, the myth of ‘spread of Islam’ by force provide the backdrop. The issues like conservatism of a threatened community, the Uniform civil code (polygamy), Article 370, misrepresentation of increasing Muslim population have been firmly planted in the ‘social common sense’. The attempt of historians and social activists to prove and propagate that all these are not correct, the truth lies somewhere else, remains on the margins of society, accepted by only few critical people and those giving a deeper thought to social issues. The well oiled machinery of RSS has ensured that the myths and distorted version of history and lop-sided version of Muslim community today; continue to be the part of main stream thinking. What Noam Chomsky said, ‘Manufacturing Consent’, was in the context of state, here the ‘social common sense’ manufactured by an organization of religious (Hindu)-nationalism is made the core part of ‘social common sense’, which in turn forms the basis of communal violence and thereby the polarization of communities along religious lines.

To add up to the existing armory of communal forces, the social media has come in handy as its reach has gone far and wide. In Muzzafarnagar, the video clipping from Pakistan where a mob wearing Muslim identity is mercilessly beating two thieves, was used. The communal forces presented it as if the Muslim mob is beating Hindu boys. Similarly Bajrang Dal activists in the past were caught while putting beef in temples in Hyderabad and hoisting Pakistan flag in Karnataka. With social media coming in handy now the outfits like Hindu Rashtra Sena are taking advantage of that and are trying to create the divisive atmosphere.

One notes painfully that with Modi coming to power the overall aggression of outfits like Hindu Rashtra Sena and authorities as such has worsened. In Kerala a college student and his associates were booked for putting Modi’s picture along with Hitler and Osama bin Laden. In Goa one person was interrogated for hours for a Facebook post which was critical of Modi.

Even before elections the ‘Book Police’ of RSS, in the form of Dinanath Batra succeeded in getting pulped the scholarly work of Wendy Doniger by Penguin. Now Orient Blackswan on its own has decided to withdraw the book by Megha Kumar ‘Communalism and Sexual Violence: Ahmadabad Since 1969’, and the History classic, ‘From Plassey to Partition: History of India’ by Sekhar Bandopadhyay. In all these violations of the freedom of expression, and the brutal Hate Crime by Hindu Rashtra Sena, the way the Prime Minister casually referred to this issue volumes about the shape of things to come.

While in Maharashtra the Assembly elections are forthcoming, such acts will definitely be feeding in to the electoral calculations of communal forces. It is mandatory that state Government has to rise above its opportunist inactivity to take the divisive forces head on. This needs to be supplemented by the proactive work to promote amity amongst religious
communities. The peace march (15th June) taken out in Pune by social groups is a very positive step to bridge the communal divides. What is also needed is to weed out the misconceptions, myths and biases about minority community; what is needed is to respect the diversity and plural nature of our country. It is time that such repressive atmosphere created by the electoral victory of BJP is combated against by all social movements and elements committed to plural, democratic, Liberal India.

It's history, but not as we know it: Gujarat schools left red-faced as textbooks claim Japan 'launched a nuclear attack on US'

Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on October 30, 1948.

Japan launched a nuclear attack on the United States during World War II.

A new country named 'Islamic Islamabad' was constituted after Partition with its capital at 'Khyber Ghat' in the Hindu Kush mountains.

All South Indians are 'Madrasis'.

These aren't examples of bloomers from some third-rate tourist guidebook, but gems from history in social science textbooks that have been fed to 50,000 Class 6-8 students of government-run English-medium schools in Gujarat.

These were the same textbooks in which a chapter on the life and times of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was proposed, only to be shot down by the BJP leader himself.

According to the Class 8 Social Science textbook:

"People in east India wear clothes above ankle as there is more rainfall. Ladies wear sari in a peculiar manner."

It says the majority of people in eastern India reside in "houses made of wood and bamboo".

The textbook goes on to say: "Idli and dosa are famous in south India. Madrasi food is very famous."

In another reference, it goes on to club the Rath Yatra of Puri with South Indian festivals, including Onam and Diwali in Kerala.

English hasn't been spared either. Here's a sample from the Class 6 textbook: "You might have heared, read and seen that the Earth is round. Whereas, you stay on the Earth, you can not come to know the shape of Earth; because the Earth is too much vast.

"Why we do not feel that the Earth is round? Is the Earth really To whom it is like? Just imagine, round? The Moon-uncle is telling. Come on to my surface and see from the edge. The travellers of the space had taken the photographs of the Earth from the space - see it."

Unbelievable? Here's another: "The man found grains like wheat, jav etc. automatically in the various part of India's soil. So the people of India (in that time) collected and preserved that grains for food. They met each other often and often and often, and so 'Socialism' increased. We are getting the residues of premature mankind since 20 lacs years ago in India."

"The National Curriculum Framework 2005 was never implemented by Gujarat and there is a political bias here. For instance, the GCERT-engineered textbooks have only one paragraph on the 350 years of Mughal rule in India,"

The first semester textbook of Class 7 that contains a chapter on the medieval age but has just a paragraph on Mughal rule.

The chapter devotes itself largely to how Mahmud of Ghazni looted "India and Saurashtra (in Gujarat)".
