RSS/Hindutva Versus India/Indian

RSS/Hindutva camp boasts of being the embodiment of Indian nationalism/patriotism and represent the
aspirations of the Nation. It claims, specially the RSS, that India is a Hindu Rashtra and they are the guardians of Hindu interests. It also claims that politics of Hindutva is synonymous with the interests of Hindus. This is despite the fact that India is a Democratic-Secular country; committed to build an egalitarian polity. RSS and its Hindutva camp followers, in tune with Muslim communalists and pre-Independence Muslim League, assert that Hindus cannot be democratic & secular. This chart is an attempt to unmask the anti-national ideology and deeds of the Hindutva camp vis-a-vis India; a land inhabited by people of many religions, cultures and creeds of which majority being of Hindus. This chart ‘RSS/HINDUTVA VERSUS INDIA/INDIANS’ is self-explanatory as each issue of concern for India and those
who love India (both in pre and post- Independence period) is tagged with the Hindutva camp’s official stand. This chart makes it easy to comprehend the gravity of anti-national character of the ideology and misdeeds of the Hindutva camp led by RSS. It was this antinational character of the Hindutva ideology that Dr. BR Ambedkar a great researcher and thinker of communal politics in India wrote as early as 1940, “If Hindu Raj does become a fact, it will, no doubt, be the greatest calamity for this country…it is a menace to liberty, equality and fraternity. On that account it is incompatible with democracy. Hindu Raj must be prevented at any cost.”
[B. R. Ambedkar, Pakistan or the Partition of India, Government of Maharashtra, Bombay, 1940 (reprint 1990), p.
358]

Killing of Gandhiji

Killing of Gandhiji is glorified as ‘vadh’ and presented as an act of bravery ordained by God. This murder is celebrated by Hindutva individuals/organizations. Even today one of the Hindutva sites reads that on 30th January 1948 evening,
“Shriram came in the form of Nathuram Godse and ended the life of Gandhi.”

The National Flag
(Tri-colour)

The National Flag is decried, denigrated and described as bad omen. According to RSS English organ, Organizer, the National Flag will never be “respected and owned by Hindus. The word three is in itself an evil, and a flag having three
colours will certainly produce a very bad psychological effect and is injurious to a country.”

The Democratic- Secular Indian Constitution which declares Untouchability as crime.

The Hindutva camp has been opposing Democratic- Secular Constitution since its promulgation. They want to replace it by Manu Code (Manu Smriti) which decrees worst kind of Untouchability and denigrates women & twice-born Hindus i.e. Dalits. They openly work for establishing a Hindu rashtra (Nation) which will be run under Manu Code. It was one of the reasons they killed Gandhiji.

Status of Minorities

According to Hindutva game-plan Islam & Christianity are ‘foreign religions’, having no place in Hindu rashtra. The indigenous religions like Sikhism, Jainism, Buddhism etc. will not have independent status but treated as part of
Hinduism.

Ideals

The Hindutva camp idolizes Hitler, Mussolini and dictators like them. The greatest ideologue of RSS declared: “RSS inspired by one flag, one leader and one ideology is lighting the flame of Hindutva in each and every corner of this great land.” This mantra was picked up Fascists/Nazis of Europe.

*Terror Acts’ Investigations and RSS*

*Ram Puniyani*

Supreme Court slammed the RSS Sarsanghchalak, Dr. Mohan Bhagwat for stating that Karakre had told him that he was under tremendous pressure to nail the RSS in unsolved cases of terror acts like, Malegaon, Ajmer, Samjhauta
Express blast (Feb 28, 2012). As per the Chief of RSS, he knew Karkare well and Karkare had solicited his cooperation for solving these cases, and in the context of that had told him about the pressures being put on him.

One knows that Karkare was under pressure during that time. One also knows that the investigations in the acts of terror were leading nowhere and after every blast number of young Muslim boys were arrested, the blame was put on some affiliate of Lashkar, Al Qaeda etc. After Karkare took over as the chief of Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad, the things started moving. The turning point was the meticulous investigation by Karkare’s team which led to the unearthing of the motor cycle used in the Malegaon blast, the motor cycle belonged to Sadhvi Pragya Sing Thakur, the ex ABVP (RSS affiliate) activist, and the leads took the ATS to the whole set of terror group, which were called later as Saffron terrorism by the Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram.

These investigations led Karkare to Swami Dayanand Pandey, Lt Col. Prasad Shrikant Purohit, Swami Aseemanand, Indresh Kumar, Sunil Joshi, Kasangra and the number of those close to the RSS or close to RSS affiliates. The
implication of this was very clear.

Once this Hindutva network got exposed the acts of terror which were occurring at regular intervals in front of mosques and other places, where Muslims congregate for prayers came to a halt. As such it was ironical that the blasts were focussed to kill the Muslims and after every act again Muslims were arrested. With the Rajasthan ATS joining the process of investigation the evidence against these Hindutva elements became further clear.

The confession of Swami Aseemanand in presence of the magistrate gave the full details of the modus operandi of these acts of terror. The people involved in these acts believed that they are doing these dastardly acts to avenge the Muslim terrorists and that these acts aimed to pave the way for Hindu Rashtra. Swami Aseemanand, the VHP leader working in Gujarat, who was the architect of Shabri Kumbh Mela was the key figure in these blasts in many ways. In the statement given by him in presence of the magistrate he confessed that their group was involved in these activities.

Since then more and more beans have been spilling from the Sangh stable, the latest one being that of involvement of Kamal Chauhan in Samjhauta blast. Chauhan has been labelled as the disgruntled element by his parent
organization, RSS. This again is the standard ploy by RSS. Most of those who are caught doing these acts of murders or blasts are claimed to have left the organization some time ago or if possible their association with RSS combine is put under the wraps.

One recalls that there was a time when nobody believed that RSS associates can be part of these acts of terror. RSS claims they do not believe in violence. Their claims have come to be exposed one after the other. Now their claim is that they are being implicated by the ruling party to appease the minorities; or that those being charged for acts of terror are clean people and are deliberately being implicated in terrorist acts. Going by the expose after expose, the RSS at one level is trying to disassociate from these terror accused, on the other is propagating that they are accused but not guilty and on yet another level claiming that the investigation authorities have been pressurized to nail the RSS cohorts.

This defence is very weak. The statement of RSS Chief is coming at a time when Karkare has already become a martyr for the cause of defending the country. There is no way he can confirm or deny what the patriarch of Sangh Combine is saying. But yes there are some clues which can tell as to what is the truth.

Lets recall that Sadhvi Pragya Thakur was caught for her alleged role in Malegaon blast, none other than Lal Krishna Advani went to the Prime Minister to complain about the torture of Pragya Singh Thakur and demanded investigation into Thakur's torture. At the same time another Hindutva leader Bal Thakre condemned Karkare, calling him anti National and wrote in his mouth piece Saamna that ‘we spit on his face’! Another Hindutva warrior Narendra Modi called Karkare as Deshdrohi (anti National). Incidentally both these, Thackeray and Modi, are hailed as ‘Emperors of Hindu hearts’. Later Modi called Karkare as a great patriot after his death. Modi went to the extent of offering one crore Rupees to Karate’s widow, which she gracefully refused.

On the contrary Congress leader Digvijay Singh claimed that Karkare had called him on the night of 26/11, the day Mumbai was attacked by Kasab and gang, and said that there is a tremendous pressure on him from the Right
wing. Digvijay Singh also showed the press clipping to that effect and pointed out that BSNL, Bhopal cannot give the records of the conversation between him and Karkare as the matter was more than a year old at that time, and BSNL does not keep record beyond a year.

There is another source which tells us the direction from which Karkare was being pressurized. Julio Ribeiro, one amongst the police of officer of highest integrity in the country, in his obituary to Karkare (Times of India, Mumbai Edition 28th Nov 2010) pointed out that there was a direct insinuation into the work of Karkare, who was intimidated by Advani and other Hindutva gang. Karkare sought solace and advice from his senior Ribeiro, Ribeiro confirmed that Karkare was being harassed and intimidated by the associates of Advani-Modi and company. Ribeiro advised his junior colleague to carry on with his work irrespective of the pressures. "He came to me because he was looking for someone to hold his hand," Ribeiro told IANS on phone from Mumbai while stressing that Karkare was not a man to be
politically influenced.

While this is what the truth is, one can see the motive behind Bhagwat’s statement in the face of so many of his cabal either charged or in jail. In an earlier event Bhagwat’s predecessor K. Sudarshan had also played a similar game. During the investigation of Babri demolition, when the role of RSS combine was coming more and more to surface, Sudarshan said that he heard Gandhian Nirmala Didi saying that there was a blast inside the mosque which demolished the mosque. Fortunately Didi was alive that time to deny something being said in her name.

So there is some pattern in the statements of RSS chiefs!

Where Sangh spins narratives of victimhood, belligerence

VHP leader sees conspiracy to ‘expand Muslim population, using Hindu girls as machines’

‘Love Jehad’ is the new technique, says a grave-looking Chandra Mohan Sharma. But it is a ‘difficult art’, picked only after ‘madrasa-conducted training.’

“First, good-looking Muslim men are identified. They are given neutral names like Sonu and Raju.” These boys, Mr. Sharma says, are then given jeans, t-shirts, mobiles, and bikes and taught to behave. “They stand in front of schools and colleges and woo young Hindu girls. The first few times, our girls snub them.” But then, he says resignedly, they fall for it. “This jehad is about pyar se fasana – entrapment through love.”

The bespectacled joint general-secretary of the Meerut division of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), ‘which covers all of western U.P.’, he points out with a wee bit of pride, is wearing a grey safari-suit. We are sitting in a small office next to the Khatauli railway station, off the main highway, in Muzaffarnagar district late on Tuesday afternoon.

Being the protector

“Look at police records. Out of 100 girls who elope, 95 are Hindus who go with Muslim men. It is rare that Hindu boys get Muslim girls.” This, the VHP leader says conclusively, is proof of a conspiracy to ‘expand Muslim population, using Hindu girls as machines. We need to protect the honour of our daughters, bahu aur beti’.

Ignore this as meaningless rant at your own peril, for Mr. Sharma was at the “mahapanchayat” on Saturday. The protection of ‘our women’ was the common theme in many speeches, as video recordings of the event, shown to The Hindu, reveal. There is now recognition that this event added to the agitational mood, added to the insecurity, and eventually led to clashes and violence.

“On August 27, a Muslim boy teased a Hindu girl,” Mr. Sharma resumes, “and that is the root of the tensions. Tell me, which brother can accept this?” While this is now a widely accepted version of the trigger for the violence, Muslim elders in Muzaffarnagar town dispute it and insist that it was motor-cycles colliding that provoked the initial fight between young men. The fight was later given a communal colour.

Playing the victim

The patriarchal narrative, which dominates conversations with Hindu extremists across towns of western U.P, is then seamlessly linked to the narrative of victimhood.

A narrow alley off the Surajkund Road in Meerut leads up to the Bharat Mata Mandir. On the first floor lives Sudarshan, VHP’s regional organisation secretary. It is early morning. A plump man, he first reads the local editions of Dainik Jagran and Amar Ujala, puts up news clippings on his Facebook page, brushes his beard with a comb after a bath, and then turns to have a conversation.

“At each instance, this government has batted for Muslims. In the first FIR, why were parents of the Hindu boys who were killed named as culprits? They were not even present. Our simple demands were unheard,” he says.

Mr. Sudarshan insinuates that when Muslims ‘first attacked’ Hindus after the panchayat, the latter had sought police protection but were rebuffed. He reels off six incidents from the neighbouring Shamli district, where he alleged that a Muslim police official was ‘partial.’ “He even said he was a Muslim first and an IPS later. The government – led by Azam Khan – patronises such people.”

Balraj Singh, Bajrang Dal’s U.P. chief, says there is a ‘deeper conspiracy.’

“Like in Kashmir, Muslims want to take over the State. They want to take over Hindu property, and Hindu women through love jehad,” he says.

With the State government asserting that Hindu extremists had circulated a fake video to depict the August 27 incident in order to inflame Hindu passions, Mr. Singh turns it around. “Muslims had circulated it because they wanted to spread panic, fear, so that like Kashmiri Pandits, we would leave our homes.”

Politics of aggression

Mr. Sudarshan says that what happened after the mahapanchayat “was a Godhra.” “And what has happened after that is the reaction on the lines of post-Godhra in Gujarat. Hindus did not sit back.” The Bajrang Dal leader, who has traces of a red tika on his forehead, then says, “Victory will be ours. The Sangh’s work is to unite Hindus, to protect our temples, women, cows, Ganga, our religion.”

Reminiscent of Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s speech in Goa in 2002, soon after the Gujarat riots, where the then Prime Minister had said Muslims tend ‘not to live in coexistence with others,’ Mr. Singh said, “If out of 10 people, I have fights with eight, the problem is with me. Why is it that Muslims fight with Jats, Gujjars, Dalits, Brahmans, Thakurs, and Kuswahas? Why can’t they live in peace?”

But it is here, with the reference to castes, that the politics behind the riots slowly reveals itself.

One Sangh activist, who insisted on being anonymous, told The Hindu, “For the first time, Jats and Muslims are fighting each other. This is a great achievement. Jats have begun thinking like Hindus first. If more Hindu castes fight with Muslims, it will be better for us. BJP will benefit.” Muslims, this activist added, needed to be ‘taught a lesson, for they thought they ruled U.P. under Mulayam.’

Mr. Singh offers a candid take. ‘To save your caste, you have to save your religion first. This message has gone out. This has happened for the first time in many years.”

But while the broader Sangh Parivar is keen to project itself as the protector of Hindus in general, and Jats in particular, against Muslims, they are ambivalent about taking full credit, perhaps in a bid to escape culpability.

Mr. Sharma in Khatauli says, “It is natural that we are involved since we talk about Hindu rights. But the Sangh does not have shakhas in all villages in the district; our organisation is weak. This is a spontaneous upsurge.” Other political leaders, however, rubbish the suggestion that over a lakh could congregate for a meeting without organisational support.

Plan was to break Jat-Muslim unity

MUZAFFARNAGAR: City elders say Jats and Muslims here have always been together and a potent force. Any political party that won the backing of these communities has had a smooth sailing in elections.

Members from both communities say forces were at work for some time to engineer a divide. "Very subtly, the communities were poisoned against each other. It was slow poisoning," a local physician said. For A Goel, a retired teacher, the scale and intensity of violence was shocking. "There was never such mistrust between communities, not even in the 1990s before or after the Babri Masjid demolition," he said.

Muzaffarnagar: 'Love jihad', beef bogey sparked riot flames

"Desh, bahu aur gai ko bachana hai toh Narendra Modi ko lana hai (Bring Narendra Modi to save the country, women and cows)" – this was saffron slogan that stoked the Muzaffarnagar fire, causing the deaths of 37 people since last week.

Summing up in one breath all that a man holds dear – land, cow and women – the line added to the earlier VHP bogey of "love jihad", an alleged plot by Muslim youths to woo and convert Hindu girls to Islam. And given that the riots apparently started with the molestation of a Jat girl by a Muslim man, it made the volatile communal cauldron of western Uttar Pradesh explode.

The idea was not new. Sangh outfits have used it to good effect in Mangalore and Kerala, pushing even Kerala's Christian organisations to pick it up.

"When the society could no longer bear the love jihadists, the corrective movement in the form of Bahu Beti Bachao mahapanchayat came into being," said VHP chief Ashok Singhal.

What he was referring to was a version of the slogan - "Bahu Beti Izzat Bachao" - coined at the Jat Mahapanchayat of September 7. Cases of molestation had been on the rise in the run-up to the clash, said locals. And the bloodshed began soon after the mahapanchayat ended.

The alleged molestation case, though, was the proverbial last straw. Rumors of cow slaughter, fuelled by the Sangh Parivar, had already frayed tempers.

"Incidents of cow slaughter and reports of police inaction or biased action led to a situation where people were feeling agitated," said Meerut-based RTI activist Sandeep Pahal.

But independent data to substantiate molestation and cow slaughter stories are hard to come by, usually because the police rarely register these cases, said a local journalist.

Whatever the method, it yielded the desired result. "It's a clear Hindu versus Muslim issue now. The damage to the social fabric is irreparable," said an aide of Qadir Rana, BSP parliamentarian from Muzaffarnagar.

The cleansing of Muslims in Western Uttar Pradesh is an old project of Hindutva camp specially RSS and its affiliates. They have been working for it for a long time. They tried to do it on the eve of Independence and almost succeeded in executing it recently. There is a shocking similarity, though. On the eve of Independence, it was Congress ministry of Govind Ballabh Pant which shielded the criminals and now it is Samajvaadi Party which facilitated the gruesome project.

I am pasting below a passage from the autobiography of the first Home Secretary of UP, Rajeshwar Dayal, a senior bureaucrat, clearly showing the sinister designs of the RSS regarding Western UP on the eve of Independence. RSS plan to cleanse Muslims from this area is old one & according to Dayal, RSS chief Golwalkar was directly involved in it.

According to Dayal,
"I must record an episode of a very grave nature when the procrastination and indecision of the UP Cabinet led to dire
consequences. When communal tension was still at fever pitch, the Deputy Inspector General of Police of the Western Range, a very seasoned and capable officer, B. B. L. Jaitley, arrived at my house in great secrecy. He was accompanied by two of his officers who brought with them two large steel trunks securely locked. When the trunks were opened, they revealed incontrovertible evidence of a dastardly conspiracy to create a communal holocaust throughout the Western districts of the province. The trunks were crammed with blueprints of great accuracy and professionalism of every town and village in that vast area, prominently marking out the Muslim localities and habitations. There were also detailed instructions regarding access to the various locations, and other matters which amply revealed the sinister purport.

Greatly alarmed by those revelations, I immediately took the police party to the Premier’s [chief minister’s] house. There, in a closed room, Jaitley gave a full report of his discovery, backed by all the evidence contained in the steel trunks. Timely raids conducted on the premises of the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) had brought the massive conspiracy to light. The whole plot had been concerted under the direction and supervision of the Supremo of the organization himself. Both Jaitley and I pressed for the immediate arrest of the prime accused, Shri Golwalkar, who was still in the area.

Pantji [G. B. Pant] could not but accept the evidence of his eyes and ears and expressed deep concern. But instead of agreeing to the immediate arrest of the ringleader as we had hoped, and as Kidwai would have done, he asked for the matter to be placed for consideration by the Cabinet at its next meeting. It was no doubt a matter of political delicacy as the roots of the RSS had gone deep into the body politic. There were also other political compulsions, as RSS sympathizers, both covert and overt, were to be found in the Congress Party itself and even in the Cabinet. It was no secret that the presiding officer of the Upper House, Atma Govind Kher, was himself an adherent and his sons were
openly members of the RSS.

At the Cabinet meeting there was the usual procrastination and much irrelevant talk. The fact that the police had unearthed a conspiracy which would have set the whole province in flames and that the officers concerned deserved warm commendation hardly seemed to figure in the discussion. What ultimately emerged was that a letter should be issued to Shri Golwalkar pointing out the contents and nature of the evidence which had been gathered and demanding an explanation thereof. At my insistence, such a letter if it were to be sent, should be issued by the Premier himself to carry greater weight.

Panditji asked me to prepare a draft, which I did in imitation of his own characteristic style. The letter was to be delivered forthwith and two police officers were assigned for the purpose. Golwalkar, however, had been tipped off and he was nowhere to be found in the area. He was tracked down southwards but he managed to elude the couriers in pursuit. This infructuous chase continued from place to place and weeks passed.

Came January 30, 1948 when the Mahatma, that supreme apostle of peace, fell to a bullet fired by an RSS fanatic. The tragic episode left me sick at heart."

The Mystery of Kawwal: Were Muzaffarnagar riots based on distortion of facts?

So how did a possible clash between a group of hotheads from neighbouring villages turn into an alleged assault on the honour of Hindu women? Especially in the Jat heartland, where community identity takes precedence over religious identity?

BJP MLA Suresh Rana, from Shamli adjacent to Muzaffarnagar, claims the harassment of women is what he had heard when he visited Malikpura.

NDTV had reported earlier that Hindutva groups like the VHP have made what they call 'Love Jihad' (the alleged abduction or harassment of Hindu women by Muslim youth) part of their propaganda. The district president of the VHP told us that the Kawwal incident is very much in keeping with this trend, though he had no empirical evidence to prove it.

A fake YouTube video circulated by BJP MLA from nearby Meerut, Sangeet Som, also played on similar themes. It shows two boys being beaten to death by a mob, indicating that they are Sachin and Gaurav.

The video was, in fact, shot in Sialkot in Pakistan, and is two years old. Som has been booked by the police for inciting hatred amongst communities.

A massive Mahapanchayat called by Jats on September 7 demanding justice for the Kawwal incident was labelled a 'bahu bachao, beti bachao' sammelan (Save our wives and daughters meeting). As the meeting dispersed, violent clashes broke out, a cycle of retaliation which continues to this day.

It is perhaps a sobering thought that the basis of this anger rested on distortion of facts.

This suggests a pattern that is exactly the same as the Gujarat 2002 one: false rumours leading to gangrapes and mass murder of Muslims :-

EXCLUSIVE: 'They gang-raped my daughters in front of my eyes'; Muzaffarnagar riots victims too afraid to report to police

Scores of women, including minor girls, were raped, gang-raped and sexually assaulted in Lisarh, Lank, Bahawadi, Hasanpur, Mohammadpur, Baghpat and many other small villages of Muzaffarnagar, Shamli and Panipat districts of Uttar Pradesh. The rape took place when the people were leaving their villages to save their lives and honour, say victims.

Daily Bhaskar reporters visited the relief camp organised by local residents in Kairana and Kandhala where they were shocked to learn that women, including young girls, were held captive for days.

They were allegedly gang-raped by the people belonging to the Jat community who attacked on their houses and threatened them to leave the village or face dire consequences.

A mother of three girls says, "Four women of my family, including my three daughters (age 17, 18 and 21 years), were held captive by 10-13 rioters and gang-raped in front of me. I was forced to see the shameful and brutal act."

"Two of my daughters have been released and the other two are still missing", she says.

Ther daughters were not the sole victims. Scores of other women were assaulted, raped, killed and burned to death by the barbarians who were once their neighbours.

Another sixteen-year-old was also became a victim of rape and sexual assault by the same rioters.

She even remembers the horrific words uttered by the assaulters, “Soni soni ladkiyon ke sindur bhar denge, aur bakiyon ko kaat denge (we will marry the beautiful ones and cut into pieces the others).”

"Police thane wale ne kaha ki hum to apne ki sahayta karenge, tum Musalmano ki nahi (We will only save and help our people (Jat and Hindus), not you Muslims),"

The story is same for over 1.25 lakh victims lodged in various relief camps in different district of Western Uttar Pradesh.

BJP 'actively involved' in Muzaffarnagar riots, say activists

The BJP played a "major role in spreading lies and rumours" and was "actively involved" in the communal violence that engulfed Muzaffarnagar and claimed at least 48 lives, a fact finding team of activists said Tuesday.

The team concluded that the violence against Muslims was perpetrated to "end decades of coexistence and cleanse certain villages of Muslim presence".

The report said that police presence in the affected areas was negligible and that there has been no attempt to arrest the perpetrators of the killings.

The state government has yet to arrest a Bharatiya Janata Party legislator who posted a fake video that sparked widespread violence, it said.

It said only after the army was called in that the level of violence came down.

The report said: "The BJP has been actively involved in the violence and could emerge, when the embers die down, as the major gainer". It said at the mahapanchayat slogans in support of the BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi rent the air besides slogans against Muslims.

The team comprised John Dayal, rights activist Harsh Mander, former Border Security Force chief E.N. Rammohan, Jawaharlal Nehru University professor Kamal Mitra Chenoy, senior journalist Sukumar Muralidharan, and CPA director Seema Mustafa.

The simmering communal tension in Uttar Pradesh came to a boil in Muzaffarnagar, where lives have been lost, homes burnt to the ground, people turned into refugees. This week, in a special one hour edition of Truth vs Hype we trace how a combination of dangerous political opportunism and criminal negligence by the state government converted an isolated instance of violence into a major riot.

Cache of swords seized in MP, VHP leader on run

Neemuch: A large number of swords were seized from a house in Sanjeevani Colony area here yesterday and police arrested two persons in this connection.

Police said a VHP leader, who allegedly brought the weapons from Mandsaur town, managed to escape when police raided the place.

“We raided the place on a tip-off that the consignment of swords, along with sharpening equipment, has landed in the houses,” SP (city) Pankaj Dixit told reporters.

A total of 50 swords and a machine were recovered from the spot, he said.

The arrested persons are identified as Mahesh Gurjar and Meghraj Lohar, Dixit said, adding that an office-bearer of VHP, Nirmaldev Narela, managed to escape.

“The arrested duo, in their statement to police, said the swords were brought by Narela and one Shyam Pehelwan from Mandsaur town,” the officer said.

A manhunt has been launched to nab the absconding persons and a case under Arms Act was registered against them.

Dixit said a number of cases were registered against Narela in Neemuch district.

After the murder of the Mahatma on January 30, 1948, although it was common knowledge that the murderers were known sanghis and Hindu Mahasabhaites, both the organisations were never proven guilty of their role in the killing of the Mahatma. The help that Godse and his gang got before and after the murder was only because the entire sangh machinery was geared up for action. Godse of Pune got his initial funds and weapons for the failed attack of January 20, 1948 from Mumbai and Aurangabad. He received funds and hospitality everywhere in the offices of the Hindu Mahasabha and the Sangh. Although there was supposedly bad blood between the two organisations, after the bomb attack of January 20, Godse was again sheltered by the sanghis and the Mahasabhaites. Known Mahasabha and sangh members assisted their unhindered return to Mumbai and their hunt for a suitable weapon. All this while Madanlal Pahwa, the bomber of January 20 was singing to the Delhi police and had revealed the identity of his co-conspirators. He had gone to the extent of warning them, "phir ayega". The killer will come back.

Nathuram and Apte flew back to Delhi from Gwalior and carried out their deed on January 30, 1948. The Hindu Mahasabha and the RSS immediately arranged their defence. Apart from this at various places the sanghis and the Mahasabhaites distributed sweets to celebrate the killing of the Mahatma. Godse vented his spleen in court and tried to justify his act by painting himself as the protector of Hinduism and an avenger of Bharatmata. Who put these ideas into his mind ? Was he born with the poison in his mind? If the final act, then, was due to the poisoned mind, then wouldn’t the poisoner also be guilty of the crime?

Yet another doctored riot

A people who have never fought each other in history are today bitterly estranged, fearful and angry. ‘Not even during the Partition riots of 1947 did a drop of blood flow in our villages’, they repeatedly told us. And today, some 50 lie dead, and 50,000 have fled their homes in terror.

Cramped into makeshift camps in madrasas sand mosques, many resolve never to return to the land of their ancestors. The Muzaffarnagar countryside in western Uttar Pradesh is reeling under the gravest communal clash the country has witnessed since the 2002 Gujarat carnage.

People of diverse faiths who live together do not spontaneously turn against each other. There are three requisites for mass communal violence to occur.

The first is the deliberate manufacture of hatred. The second is the manufacture of a ‘riot’. The third is a complicit State: no riot can continue beyond a few hours unless the state actively wishes that it does so.

I visited Muzaffarnagar as part of a Centre for Policy Analysis fact-finding team, with Seema Mustafa, Sukumar Muralidharan, EN Rammohan, Kamal Mitra Chenoy and John Dayal. We were deeply dismayed to find striking evidence of each of these elements combining to violently divide communities that have lived and worked together peacefully through generations.

Communal organisations have perfected the art of manufacturing hatred against the ‘other’ community by cynically deploying rumour, innuendo and falsehood. The issue chosen to demonise the ‘other’ varies based on what would resonate and enrage most. In Partition, pork was thrown into mosques and beef into temples; later riots are spurred by rumours of cow slaughter, support to terror, and violence perpetrated by the ‘other’ community (the falsehood of the slaughter of Hindu students in hostels by Muslims led to the massacre of more than a thousand people in Bhagalpur).

The second requirement for communal violence to occur is the manufacture of the riot itself. Building on the groundswell of local Hindu fury against their Muslim neighbours because of their alleged deliberate assaults on the ‘honour’ of Hindu girls, a mahapanchayat on September 7 was convened with the explosive theme ‘Save Your Daughters’.

Fiery speeches were made against Muslims, and after the frenzied crowd dispersed, they attacked Muslim settlements. In the majority of villages, Muslims were labourers in the sugarcane fields of Jat landowners. Their small houses were set aflame and looted, some were killed, and terrified people fled to the safety of numbers in Muslim majority villages.

The third prerequisite for a manufactured riot is a complicit State administration, which fails in prevention, control, rescue and relief. The administration took no steps to quell the rumours, arrest those stoking hatred, or prohibit the mahapanchayat. Once violence broke out, the police forces mostly stood watching as the crowds attacked Muslim settlements, without using force or firing to disperse the furious mobs.

I had hoped that the 2002 Gujarat carnage would be the last in which cynical politics would succeed in fomenting hatred and organising communal massacre, and the last in which the State would abdicate its duties for relief, rehabilitation and justice.

But to push communal riots into history, the people of India must reaffirm and defend the secular democratic idea of India, and reject all parties and organisations that use hatred and violence to harvest political victories.

Do you mean Kasab was hired by RSS? If yes, then in Maharashtra and Centre, Government is of Congress, why RSS members were not caught and punished?

Terrorism is an industry, a business; an Islamophobic politics. Billions of dollars are involved. All intelligence agencies are related. They have a common agenda to demonize Muslims, target Islam as an enemy of the world at large in the post-Soviet Russia era. 26/11 was a false flag operation. Real aim was to kill Karkare as the latter, an ex-RAW man, had traced the roots of bomb blasts in India from Saadhvi Pragya/ Raj Kumar Purohit, to Modi-RSS-Mossad and infiltration in India’s Military Intelligence (MI). There is no Indian Mujahideen (IM). It is a creation of IB. All bomb blasts after 1993 Mumbai blasts have been carried out by the RSS-Mossad alliance with generous help from ISI! Yes; if you don’t believe me, read the charge-sheet of Raj Kumar Purohit. Why was Purohit planning to kill Mohan Bhagwat, the RSS chief? Because Purohit believed Bhagwar took Rs. 3 Crore from ISI!

A MASS MOVEMENT AGAINST DEMOCRACY

The Threat of the Sangh Parivar

This is the Hindutva movement, organized, led and driven by theRashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and its front organizations – the Sangh Parivar.

To most of us, this growth of Hindutva has been most identified with its hate politics - the killing of tens of thousands in genocidal pogroms, systematic stoking of hatred against Muslims and Christians, building on people's communal prejudices etc. But is this all there is to the SanghParivar?

What, in fact, are the Sangh Parivar's actual goals? If the only goal of these groups is to create communal hatred, why have they been able to build such large scale mass support in the last few decades? What has changed in these years that has created this political phenomenon?

RSS – Funds of Hate

Official RSS site claims that “The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (Sangh or RSS as it is popularly known) was founded in 1925 by Dr. Keshava Baliram Hedgewar on Vijaydashami day. Its influence is growing ever since it was established in 1925, before India got its independence. It is one of the biggest voluntary organizations of the world having over 50 lakhs Swayamsevaks. It is engaged in uniting Hindus and thereby is aimed at taking India to its pinnacle of glory.

To propagate its own brand of Hindutva ideology the AFFILIATES of the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh have been receiving millions of dollars from corporates in the United States and it has been exposed by the ‘Campaign to Stop Funding Hate’ (SFH), a group of professionals, students, workers, artists and intellectuals. They have identified that the India Development and Relief Fund (IDRF), a Maryland-based charity organisation established in 1989, has been a the key fund-raiser for the PARIVAR in the U.S. SFH says that the IDRF, which was set up to provide funds for `relief and development work’, has been funding RSS-initiated projects all over India. In 2000, around $1.7 million was channeled to Sangh Parivar organisations such as the Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram (VKA), which has been linked with anti-minority violence. Between 1994 and 2000, the IDRF disbursed close to $4 million to Sangh Parivar organisations all over India.

Some other long-term recipients of IDRF funds include the Vikas Bharti (Bihar), the Swami Vivekananda Rural Development Society (Tamil Nadu), the Sewa Bharati (New Delhi), the Jana Seva Vidya Kendra (Karnataka), the Girivasi Vanvasi Sewa Prakalp (Uttar Pradesh) and the G. Deshpande Vanvasi Vastigrah (Maharashtra). While organisations like the Sewa Bharati are openly identified with the RSS, others like the Swami Vivekananda Rural Development Society profess to work for the development of tribal people, though in reality they lay stress on teaching the tribal people the `Hindu way of life’. Collectively, these organizations have been supported by the IDRF since its establishment.

The SFH launched a `Project Saffron Dollar’ to check the activities of the IDRF. The group released a 91-page report titled “A Foreign Exchange of Hate: IDRF and the American Funding of Hate” in New Delhi. The report reveals how the IDRF obtained considerable amounts from leading U.S. technology companies such as Cisco, Sun Microsystems, AOL-Time Warner and Hewlett Packard and distributed it among RSS affiliates. While 83 per cent of the funds went to the RSS, the (VHP) and other Sangh Parivar organizations, only 2 per cent went to secular organizations.

When collecting money, the IDRF professes that it is doing so to `fund relief and development work’. Actually, the funds are distributed among RSS organizations dealing with re-conversion programmes. For example, the IDRF’s website claims that it is a charity organization that has helped the victims of the Gujarat earthquake of 2001. However, the fact remains that it used the funds to help only Hindu victims. The anti-minority stand of the IDRF is not new. In the past, IDRF in supporting organisations like the Sewa Bharati and the VKA, which is accused of using violence against Christians in Madhya Pradesh in 1998.

Biju Mathew, Professor of Information Systems at Rider University, said: “We are now disseminating the results of our investigations amongst the NRIs and U.S. corporations. Our report clearly establishes the link between the IDRF and the RSS.”

How does the IDRF operate in the U.S.? The most active fund-raisers of the IDRF are the Indian migrants to the U.S., especially professionals working in the software sector. Such IDRF sympathisers encourage their companies to put the IDRF on the corporation’s list of grantees. The swayamsewaks working in U.S. corporations project the IDRF as the `best’ and the `only’ way to provide funds for `development and relief’ work in India.

Sangh Parivar’s Population Bomb

Once again the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh [RSS] has urged Hindus that more children should be produced, in order to check the demographic imbalance. Did anyone call it fatwa or a diktat? How many TV channels found RSS joint secretary Dattatreya Hosbale's comments as controversial? Has there been strong criticism on editorial pages in mainstream newspapers? This is not the first time that RSS leaders have said that Hindus need to produce more kids. For them, Hindus are the 'victim'.

The bogey of 'Muslim population rise' or 'Ham Panch-Hamare Pachchis' are used by RSS to portray Muslims in bad light. Not only that the statement aims at driving wedge among religious communities, the fact is that it is truly regressive in nature.

The reason is that if RSS been a forward looking organisation, it would stop looking at things from the Hindu vs. Muslim. In that case it should have urged middle-class Indians [mostly Hindus] to stop female foeticide [and infanticide] to control the fascination for 'baby boy'.

Strangely, RSS leaders never tell their followers how Hinduism has been growing much faster over the last century in the world. While Islam has grown fast after 1900, overall population of Hindus in the world, has also gone up significantly, even as Christianity and other religions have now lost the pace.

As far as rise in Muslim population in India is concerned, it is not a very unusual phenomenon. The minority [Muslim] rate of growth is quite close to Dalits. Clearly, economic reasons and social backwardness are the cause behind the high birthrate.

In states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala, Muslims have a growth rate of much less than 20% per decade, which is less than the growth rate of Hindu population in India in many other states of North India. UP and Bihar have overall bigger families. No wonder, fertility rates are higher among Muslims in these states.

Secondly, there is no open opposition to family planning among Muslims, and they have adopted it widely. As Muslims go up on socio-economic indicators, they also tend to have smaller families, just like rest of the Indians.

How do you explain that? Now there will be critics who would say that if Muslims grew by 13.7% in Tamil Nadu in the decade, the decennial Hindu growth was just 11%.

The problem is that when the Hindu growth rate is seen, they don't take into account the growth rate of backwards and Dalits, whose population growth is comparable to Muslims.

For example, you can't expect to compare Iyers or Iyengars' decadal rise in population with Dalits or even Vanniyars. If you have to at all compare then do it with the socially upward Muslims. Else, consider Muslims also as a social group and then look at them with their growth rate.

The right comparison would be Muslim population rise vis-a-vis increase in population of social groups that have similar earning, living conditions and socio-economic backwardness. Statistics clearly reveal that Muslim population rate is falling in India and would stabilise in a few decades.

The difference of population growth rates is narrowing down fast. Far from becoming majority or even 25%, it will take centuries before they even reach the figure of 20% in India.

For decades, right-wing groups have made similar claims. Take for example, the charge of polygamy. Census clearly reveals that the practice of polygamy was highest among Adivasis, Jains, Buddhists and Hindus. Muslims came last as far as prevalence of the practice was concerned.

See this link. This is despite the fact that polygamy is legal for Muslims and unlawful for Hindus. But this is not highlighted or even mentioned. Tell a lie a thousand times and people tend to believe it. Senior RSS and BJP leaders often make attacks on Muslims about being more polygamous.

In December 2005, the then RSS chief [sarsanghchalak] KS Sudharshan had also urged the majority community in a similar manner. He said that 3-4 children per couple would keep the 'changing religious demography' in control. Just imagine had any other religious community [like a Muslim cleric from Nadwatul Ulema or Deoband] made such a statement, what would have happened?

There would have been wide condemnation, politicians and activists gunning for him and effigies burnt. TV channels would have continued debates for days. But in the case of RSS, it was simply ignored even though the 'cultural organisation' has huge impact and has a cadre strength of tens of lakhs.

If the RSS leaders take up real issues that affect the nation, they would be taken more seriously. It may also strike chord with the young generation. However, they remain stuck in regressive rhetoric.

Muzaffarnagar riots : Muslims on verge of losing 4,000 acres of land

Around 4,000 acres of land, 17 madarsa buildings, 4 mosques, thousands of houses, both thatched and concrete-built, and equal number of cattle have been left behind by victims of Muzaffarnagar and Shamli riots in their native villages when they escaped violence in September. Though it’s a rough estimate, but activists and Muslim outfits working on riot victims said that losses may be at a larger scale.

Interestingly, to compensate these losses and making the victims never to return to their villages, the Uttar Pradesh government is distributing Rs 5 lakh per family among the selected 1800 families from nine villages. Some Meerut-based realtors evaluated 4,000 acres of victims’ land, which is largely farm land with ripe sugarcane yield, at Rs 600 cr.

Around 40,000 were uprooted from 162 villages in Muzaffarnagar, Shamli and Baghpat. While most of Baghpat villagers have returned home, victims from other two districts are living in relief camps run by Muslim organisations in various places, including the National Capital Region.

“The government has failed to even check violence being perpetrated on victims living in relief camps. The administration is not all interested to carry investigation into the FIRs lodged by the victims. Accused can be seen roaming freely in the villages. And now through these paltry compensations, the government is making sure that victims are uprooted from their lands permanently and their properties will be occupied by their agents,” said Advocate Asad Hayat, secretary of Awami Council.

“Even our camps are being run by well wishers from our own community. There is not even security arrangement to defend us. We keep vigil at night to safeguard our women and children. My family’s 250 bigha land is left behind in Kharad village and I fear that even our crop will be cut by our neighbours who had attacked our houses on 8 September. Despite repeated pleas to the district administration, nothing has been done,” said Shamshad.

Meanwhile, Jamaate Islami outfit, which has adopted around 1,000 riot victim families and is building homes for them, plans to go to court to challenge the UP government if it forces victims to forego their rights over their properties.

Patel’s communalism—a documented record

A cabal of self-confessed Hindu nationalists, as distinct from Indian nationalists, consistently lauds Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel because it finds in him a soulmate. He is not praised by himself; significantly, he is always pitted against Nehru.

IN November 1945 one of the top Congress leaders inaugurated on Marine Drive in Mumbai, just next to the Chowpati Beach, the Pransukhlal Mafatlal Hindu Swimming Pool. It was, and still is, exclusively for the use of Hindus. Its doors remain shut, even in 2013, for Muslims and other communities. No prizes for guessing who that top leader was. There was one and only one top Congress leader who would have done the deed, namely, Vallabhbhai Patel. For long a plaque on the frontage of the premises boldly proclaimed his achievement.

New report exposes HAF as the newest arm of the global Sangh

Foundation Uses Civil rights and Pro-Democracy Veneer To Advance Supremacist Agenda

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Washington D.C, Sunday, December 15, 2013

The Coalition Against Genocide (CAG - http://coalitionagainstgenocide.org/), today released a new report Affiliations of Faith: Hindu American Foundation and the Global Sangh - that documents HAF's deep imbrication within the Global Hindutva movement. Hindutva refers to a Hindu supremacist movement that originated in India in the 1920s. The movement has a presence today in several countries across the world including the US. The Hindutva movement was responsible for the assassination of Gandhi, the demolition of the 16th century Babri Masjid mosque in Northern India, the 2002 anti-Muslim pogrom that claimed over 2000 lives in Gujarat, the massacre of Christians and the destruction of churches in the state of Odisha and the ongoing atrocities against Muslims in the district of Muzaffarnagar (U.P). This new report releases for the first time archival material from the internal email communications of the global Sangh to show HAF's deep links to this violent and intolerant movement.

"The HAF is a third wave Hindutva organization in the US," said Professor Biju Mathew, whose pioneering article 'The Protean Forms of Yankee Hindutva' (with Vijay Prashad) defined the study of Hindutva's growth outside India. The first wave organizations imitated the Sangh outfits in India and built mirror organizations in the US and UK in the 1980s. A decade long transition of the 1990s then saw the Hindutva movement both try to create space for the second generation and build organizations responsive to US political frameworks. The current third wave of the 2000s has witnessed organizations like HAF that are deeply rooted in Hindutva use an American discourse of civil rights and multiculturalism to advance their agenda" he added.

Announcing the release of the CAG's new Spotlight Series, Dr. Shaik Ubaid of the CAG noted that "the spotlight series on the violent supremacist movement will help draw attention of the world to the international expansion of Hindutva. It should raise grave and urgent concerns about Hindutva attempts to take over Indian and Hindu spaces in the US and to infiltrate US power centers such as the Congress and local legislatures."

The HAF report Affiliations of Faith is the first in the series. The next report is scheduled for release in early January.

No home, no food, no shelter and still state wants them to vacate the relief camps

Jamia Students Solidarity Forum along with some journalists visited the relief camps situated in Shamli district of Uttar-Pradesh on 15 December 2013 where the victims of the Muzaffarnagar riots have taken shelter.

JSSF distributed clothes, some toys to the children and 700 blankets among the victims. We first reached the Mallakpur camp where around 4500 people are living in tarpaulin tents under the open sky in this chilling weather.

When we asked the DG and CMO to give us in written that they have received six testimonies from the mothers of the deceased children they denied and ran away in hurry from there leaving us there.

While talking to the victims across the camps we asked about the problems which they are facing. The lack of proper drinking water and sanitation, proper shelter as the tarpaulin tents could not prevent the dew so they wake up in wet blankets, lack of proper clothes and grocery, lack of medical facilities etc are the common problems being faced by these homeless people.

The Samajwadi party led Uttar Pradesh government’s apathy towards these camps is no more a hidden fact. But the point is that none of the leaders of other political parties have visited any of these camps so far to assess the situation after initial few days. Camps located in the interior areas like Bibipur Hatia, Bhura and Kanethi camps are in pathetic situation and they have not seen any government official from months.

Instead of working for these people the state government wants them to vacate the camps as soon as possible. The traumatised people who were mercilessly attacked by their neighbours in their villages do not want to return back and even if some of them wish to return the administration and the government has failed to persuade them to do so. The apprehension of the victims that if they return they would be attacked has compelled them to live in the camps.

In all the camps we saw children without adequate clothes and most of them were barefoot without any slipper or shoe. The shortage of the food items and clothes are a common problem which we heard in all camps.

I could only say that the state has left these people to die. It reminds me of the words of Allama Iqbal.

Taqdeer ke qaazi ka ye fatwa hai azal se,
Hai jurm-e-zayeefi ki sazaa marg-e-mufajaat!

[This is the verdict of creator of destiny to time,
Punishment for crime of being weak is ultimate death!]

On humanitarian grounds JSSF pleads to the TCN readers to come forward and help these people who are the victims of the politics of hate.

Aseemanand says RSS Chief sanctioned terrorist attacks; Mag releases Audio/Transcript

Bhagwat ‘knew’ of plans to bomb several Muslim targets around India; allegedly saw it not as crime, but connected it with the ideology that is very important for Hindus.

In the last two interviews, Aseemanand repeated that his terrorist acts were sanctioned by the highest levels of the RSS—all the way up to Mohan Bhagwat, the current RSS chief, who was the organisation’s general secretary at the time.

Aseemanand told The Caravan that Bhagwat said of the violence, “It is very important that it be done. But you should not link it to the Sangh.” (A list of questions was sent to Bhagwat, but he has not responded.)

The Caravan has placed these facts in front of the public, along with a tape recording and transcript of parts of the conversation that mention Mohan Bhagwat.

India must face up to Hindu terrorism

India's anti-minorities bias is so strong that it has failed to acknowledge the threat posed by Hindu radicalism

For far too long, the enduring response of the Indian establishment to Hindu nationalists has rarely surpassed mild scorn. Their organised violent eruptions across the country – slaughtering Muslims and Christians, destroying their places of worship, cutting open pregnant wombs – never seemed sufficient enough to the state to cast them as a meaningful threat to India's national security.

But the recently leaked confession of a repentant Hindu priest, Swami Aseemanand, confirms what India's security establishment should have uncovered: a series of blasts between 2006 and 2008 were carried out by Hindu outfits. The attacks targeted a predominantly Muslim town and places of Muslim worship elsewhere. Their victims were primarily Muslim. Yet the reflexive reaction of the police was to round up young Muslim men, torture them, extract confessions and declare the cases solved.

Why is the attack on a Jewish centre in Mumbai by Pakistani gunmen an example of "Islamic terrorism", but the slaughter of a thousand Muslims by sword-wielding Hindus in Gujarat in 2002 not proof of "Hindu terrorism", particularly when the purpose of the violence was to establish an Hindu state in India? How do we describe attacks on churches, the kidnappings of pastors, the burning to death of a missionary? What do we make of the war-cry pehle kasai, phir isai: first the butchers (Muslims), then the Christians? What has prompted this debate over "Hindu terrorism" is not Aseemanand's confession: it is the fact that, in carrying out their violence, his accomplices appropriated methods which, in popular imagination, have become associated exclusively with Islamic terrorism. Detonating bombs in crowded areas: isn't that what Muslims do?

In 2002, the Indian government banned the radical Muslim group Simi (Students' Islamic Movement of India) citing the group's charter, which seeks to establish sharia rule in India, and the terror charges some of its members were facing. But the Hindu radical outfit RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh or the National Volunteer Corps) remains open for business – even though it campaigns, very openly, for a Hindu state in India, and its members incite and perpetrate violence against Muslim and Christian minorities. Mahatma Gandhi's assassin was a member of the RSS, as are Aseemanand and his confreres. To get an idea of which of the two groups poses a more immediate threat to India, consider this: the government that banned Simi was headed by the BJP, the political wing of the RSS.

Sardar Patel, the second most powerful functionary in the Indian government, was openly hostile to Muslims – hostility which no doubt would have been seen by many Hindus as tacit endorsement of their actions.

it is staggering that the Hindu right gets away so easily by routinely humiliating Indian Muslims. From demographics to diet, personal laws to places of worship, Muslims are suspect in everything they do.

ghulam muhammed wrote:Muzaffarnagar: 'Love jihad', beef bogey sparked riot flames

So no need for Muslims to cite 'Jai Hind' and chant nationalism slogans!

Hindu Children in Gurukuls being taught to hate all Muslims

Published on Oct 8, 2013

Shocking Expose. Hindu children from a Hindu Gurukul (Seminary) being taught to hate all Muslims. They are being taught that more than 90% Muslims are terrorists. They are corrupting India along with Christians. A pure fantasy. They are being brainwashed to hate Muslims so that in the future when they are told to kill Muslims in riots, they will feel no remorse. This is going on in all the Shakhas of RSS as well. Anti-Islam and anti-Muslim sentiment is being used for political ends. Muslims are being made scapegoats.

Gandhi Murder and Role of RSS: Debate Continues

Ram Puniyani

What is the truth of Gandhi murder; did RSS as an organization had any role in it? Were members of RSS involved in it? What was the reaction of RSS followers in the wake of Gandhi murder? What was the response of Sardar Patel, the then Home minister in Union Cabinet to this ghastly murder?

These have been the subject matters of many books, films and plays, apart from myriad of books and articles. While the incident, the commissions of inquiry and the judgment are there for all to see, the deeper causes of Gandhi murder have not been debated, the underlying cause of contrasting Nationalisms is not brought to the fore in most of the debates. Today it is necessary not only to unearth the incident of Gandhi murder but it is also imperative to understand that Gandhi murder had deeper ideological underpinnings, those related to two notions of Nationalism, the one Indian
Nationalism, which Gandhi espoused and strived for and other the Hindu Nationalism, the nationalism pursued by Godse, Gandhi's murderer. Incidentally the current Prime Ministerial candidate of BJP, the political wing of RSS, is also boasting about his nationalism being Hindu, so the matters become all the more relevant in the current political context.

After the murder of Mahatma, the official RSS line had been that we have nothing to do with Godse; neither is he a member of RSS. They could get away with this as there was no official record of members of RSS, and they could disown Godse at legal level. As such Godse joined RSS in 1930 and very soon rose to be its "bauddhik" "pracharak" (intellectual propagator), "Having worked for the uplift of the Hindus I felt it necessary to take part in political activities of the country for the protection of just rights of Hindus. I therefore left the Sangh (RSS) and joined Hindu Mahasabha (Godse, '*Why I Assassinated Mahatma Gandhi*' 1993, and Pg. 102). He held Mahatma responsible for appeasing Muslims, and thereby the
formation of Pakistan. He joined Hindu Mahasabha, at that time the only political party of Hindutva, and became general secretary of its Pune Branch. In due course he started a newspaper, as founder editor, called "Agrani" or Hindu Rashtra.

In an interview given to 'The Times of India' (25 Jan 98) Nathuram's brother Gopal Godse, who was also an accomplice in the murder, elaborates the apparent reasons and Nathuram's RSS membership. "The appeasement policy followed by him (Gandhi) and imposed on all Congress governments' encouraged the Muslim separatist tendencies that eventually created
Pakistan.... Technically and theoretically he (Nathuram) was a member (of RSS), but he stopped workings for it later. His statement in the court that he had left the RSS was to protect the RSS workers who would be imprisoned following the murder. On the understanding that they (RSS workers) would benefit from his dissociating himself from the RSS, he gladly did it."

This murder was celebrated by RSS followers by distributing sweets, Sardar Patel wrote, "All their (RSS) leaders' speeches were full of communal poison. As a final result, the poisonous atmosphere was created in which such a ghastly tragedy (Gandhi's murder) became possible. RSS men expressed their joy and distributed sweets after Gandhi's death." Excerpts
from Sardar Patel's letters to M S Golwalkar and S P Mookerjee. ("Outlook", April 27, 1998) The way Hindu communalists were spewing poison against Gandhi, it was logical outcome of their politics. They used the word "wadh" for this murder; this word stands for killing a demon who is harming the society. In a way Gandhi murder was the first major offensive of the Hindutva politics on Indian Nationalism, in a way it was to herald the onset of bigger dangers which Hindutva politics has assumed today.

Contrary to the claims of Godse that it was only his planning, the commissions of inquiry have stated that it was a conspiracy by various followers of Hindu Mahsabha-RSS ideology, who planned to kill the Mahatma as he, a Hindu, was a big obstacle to turn this country in to a Hindu nation. Sardar Patel wrote that it was a fanatical wing of the Hindu Mahasabha directly under Savarkar that hatched the conspiracy and saw it through,...of course his assassination was welcomed by those of the RSS and Hindu Mahasabha who were strongly opposed to his way of thinking and to his policy..." (Sardar Patel Quoted in Justice Kapoor report Chapter I page 43). Justice Jivan Lal Kapoor himself concluded that "...all the facts taken together were destructive of any theory other than the conspiracy to murder by Savarkar and his group."

This Hindutva became the base of politics of Hindu Mahsabha and RSS. Gandhi in contrast was a Hindu but was opposed to the idea of Nation being a Hindu nation. Similarly we see Maulana Abul Kalam Azad; a Muslim never supported the idea of a Muslim Nation Pakistan. Gandhi and Hindutva politics were two opposite poles. Gandhi united the whole nation on secular grounds, cutting across region, religion and caste. He was a religious person but he was opposed to misuse of religion for political goals... "In India, for whose fashioning I have worked all my life, every man enjoys equality of status,
whatever his religion is. The state is bound to be wholly secular" (Harijan August 31, 1947) and," religion is a personal affair of each individual, it must not be mixed up with politics or national affairs"(ibid pg 90).While Hindu Mahasabha and RSS believed that this nation is a Hindu nation and minorities have to remain subordinate to Hindus. They mostly did not take part in anti British agitations and struggles. For example Savarkar who was an anti British revolutionary in the beginning of his life, after getting released from Andaman jail, never participated in any anti British movement or joined and national movement. RSS followers barring Hedgewar, occasionally and in the beginning also did not take part in freedom movement. Their main focus was countering the Muslim communalists and subjugating them, they were not against the British power as such.

The issue of 55 crores was a mere pretext As a matter of fact this 55 crore was the Pakistan's share from the united treasury. The first installment of the money was already given and 55 crores were to be given. Meanwhile Pakistan attacked Kashmir. Indian Government withheld these 55 crores after Pakistan attack on Kashmir. Kashmir that time was an independent state and Gandhi, true to his ethical stand in political arena, asked the government not to link Pakistan's share with the Kashmir problem.

Any way this was a pretext as even before Gandhi talked about Pakistan's share of 55 crores, already four attacks were made on Gandhi's life, in some of which Godse was also involved. Jagan Phadnis in his book '"Mahatmyachi Akher"' (Lokvangymay Griha, 1994) correctly argues that Gandhi murder was not on the charges propagated by them (Partition and insistence on paying Pakistan's dues (55 crore) from the treasury), but due to the basic deep differences with the social politics of Gandhi and that of the followers of the Hindu Rashtra. These two reasons are proffered merely as a pretext for the same. We need to understand that when BJP and company talk of nationalism, they are not talking of Indian Nationalism but Hindu nationalism, which is the not so hidden part of their political agenda. The present attacks on secular fabric of our polity are yet another assassination attempts of Mahatma. So talking about the deeper causes of his murder will remain relevant till the attacks on secular democratic values of the country continue to hover on the nation.
