Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen: As an Indian citizen, I don't want Modi as my PM

Coming out strongly against Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, Nobel laureate Amartya Sen on Monday said he does not want him to become India's Prime Minister as he does not have secular credentials. The prominent economist also criticised Modi's model of governance saying he did not approve of it.

Gujarat slides in both rural and urban spending, data reveals

Gujarat may be the poster boy of development and economic growth, but is one of the few states that have slid in economic rankings. Consumption expenditure of people in Gujarat is growing at a slower rate than the national average, according to a comparative analysis of data on monthly per capita spending between 2011-12 and 1999-2000, both of which are put out by the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO)

Letter to President Obama from India's Parliamentarians - continue ban on Modi visa

Coalition Against Genocide (CAG), a broad alliance dedicated to justice and accountability for the Gujarat pogrom of 2002, hailed the letters signed by 65 members from both houses of India's Parliament, calling on President Obama to maintain the ban on a US visa for Mr. Narendra Modi, Chief Minister of the Indian State of Gujarat.

The letters, written in November and December 2012, and released to the media today by the Coalition Against Genocide, represent a broad consensus among 15 political parties from across the ideological spectrum that Mr. Narendra Modi is culpable for violations of human rights abuses and religious freedom in Gujarat and should continue to be denied entry to the United States.

The letters represent an unprecedented move by MPs from various parties belonging to both houses of Parliament, in writing a candid missive to the US President on gross violations of human rights violations committed within India's borders.

"We wish to respectfully urge you to maintain the current policy of denying Mr. Modi a visa to the United States. Given that legal cases against the culprits including many senior officials in Mr. Modi's administration are still pending in the court of law, any revoking of the ban at this juncture would be seen as a dismissal of the issues concerning Mr. Modi's role in the horrific massacres of 2002," the letter stated. "It would legitimize Mr. Modi's human rights violations and seriously impact the nature of US-India relations by sending a message that the United States values economic interests over and above the universal values of human rights and justice," added the MPs in their joint communiqué to Mr. Obama.

The letter gains added significance in the light of BJP President Mr. Rajnath Singh's visit to the US, with the intent of lobbying in Washington DC for Mr. Modi's US visa. The party had long maintained that Modi had not applied for a US visa and was not eager to have one.

"The fact that 65 MPs from 15 political parties across 15 states chose to write a joint letter to President Obama about Narendra Modi's US visa, is a stark reminder that Modi and the divisive ideology he represents continue to be anathema to a cross section of Indians," said Raja Swamy, spokesperson for the Coalition Against Genocide (CAG). "After having long denied any desire on the part of Mr. Modi to acquire a US visa, Mr. Rajnath Singh's visit to the US, to lobby lawmakers here for Modi's visa reeks of hypocrisy," added Mr. Swamy.

The letter draws the President's attention to the fact that Mr. Modi had engaged in systematic obstruction of justice and failed to even provide rehabilitation to the victims of the 2002 pogrom. The letter also called the conviction of Maya Kodnani, a sitting BJP MLA and then minister in Mr. Modi's cabinet, "a damning indictment of the Modi administration, and proof that the pogrom was planned and executed at the highest levels of the state government."

The letter also refers to the ban as "consistent with US law and the shared values of the United States and India," and calls on Mr. Obama to "stand in solidarity with the survivors, human rights activists and all those who value justice and freedom of religion."

In a further sign of growing unease over Mr. Modi's ambitions to become prime minister, Nobel Laureate and influential economist Amartya Sen pointed out recently that Mr. Modi's terrible record against religious minorities makes him an unworthy candidate for India's premiership .

The Coalition Against Genocide includes a diverse spectrum of organizations and individuals in the United States and Canada that have come together in response to the Gujarat genocide to demand accountability and justice

A package deal

If you love Modi, you must love his parivar too

The Congress-led UPA 2 government has potholed our national highways, shot down our dreams of a million jets dotting the Indian sky, tripped our power supply, ruined higher education, throttled industrial enterprise, sent money down the NREGA drain, precipitated an agricultural crisis, resorted to the secularism blackmail, etc, etc. To top it all, it's even politicising and communalising sensitive issues concerning national security. But hope is at last round the corner folks, it's time to make amends. After all, hamare paas vote hai! ('While we were silent', IE, July 11; 'Body politics', IE, July 6).

Yes, we the middle class ,with aspiration and attitude, do have the vote, and we know exactly how to use it this time. Vote for the Congress party: you think we are mad? Vote for the Third Front: you must be joking! We were silent but now our votes will speak.

But... Oh no, NaMo! Look at how you have blown it all, rendered so many of us, your silent and not-so-silent admirers, red-faced and speechless! How could you botch such a transparently pre-scripted interview, no follow-up questions asked or allowed?

How could you liken the accidental death of a "kutte ka bachcha" with what human rights organisations nationally and globally believe to have been a state-complicit, if not state-sponsored, "massacre of Muslims" under your watch? Now, only days after the Reuters interview, you speak of secularism and burqa in the same breath at a public rally. Is this inclusive politics? Why this harakiri, such reckless drilling of holes in your own dream-boat and ours?

Hey, wait a minute. How could an accomplished communicator like Narendra Modi commit blunder after blunder? Could it be that it's not him, but we the middle class that needs to rethink? Could it be that both his puppy analogy and the burqa reference are carefully calibrated, fully premeditated? As one writer gleefully argued in a recent column in these pages, communal polarisation will help the BJP and its prime ministerial aspirant-in-chief. Could that be the clue to how Modi's googly must be read?

Listen, Mr and Ms Middle Class: Modi is smarter than you think. He is of course counting on your being his bonded voter now, but the "Hindu nationalist" is well aware of where his "core constituency" lies. You might like him because you believe he has delivered since 2002 — development, decisive leadership, good governance. His core constituency worships him for turning Gujarat into the first successful "laboratory of Hindutva" in 2002 and obstructing the judicial process to shield the perpetrators of the carnage and police officers guilty of gross dereliction of duty. You are now the new bird in his hands, but don't expect him to let go of his bird-catchers, who will hopefully bring entire flocks to the booths.

So expect him to don the "inclusive politics" mask every now and then. But also know that the occasional sweet sounds are not to entice Muslims, but you: to put your conscience to sleep, help you forget, "move on". Modi cannot but recall that neither the taleem (education), tanzeem (organisation), tijarat (employment) and "riot-free India" carrot dangled by the BJP's then top gun, L.K. Advani, in 1995, nor the emotionally charged "Muslims are the flesh of our flesh, the blood of our blood" proclamation of then party president Bangaru Laxman in 2000, was any help in melting Muslim hearts. He also knows that actions speak louder than words.

If Modi remembers all this, how can Muslims forget? If he did "absolutely the right thing in 2002", why did so many top ministers in the NDA government — Jaswant Singh, Pramod Mahajan, Arun Shourie, among others — concur with the then prime minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, that Modi must be sacked, but were outmanoeuvred by the hawks in the Sangh Parivar?

Modi misled Reuters by resorting to a half-truth, claiming that the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) has given him a "clean chit". He deliberately kept mum on the conclusion of the amicus curiae appointed by the same court, Raju Ramachandran, that there was enough in the SIT's findings to prosecute Modi.

What does one make of his curious remark in the same interview: "Up till now, we feel that we... (did)... the right thing". Up till now? Might "feel" differently tomorrow? Through his puppy analogy, Modi obliquely suggests that in any case, he was not in the driver's seat in 2002. So who was? Only his former cabinet colleague Maya Kodnani and the notorious Bajrang Dal leader, Babu Bajrangi, both of whom are serving life sentences for their role in the Naroda Patiya massacre? Or was there a much larger conspiracy, as is right now being argued by the lawyers of Zakia Jafri in a magistrate's court in Ahmedabad?

The Indian middle class yearns for a right-of-centre party with an unabashed neocon economic agenda. Modi has the right credentials. But if you love him, you must love his parivar too. He may choose not to grace a Dharam Sansad at Haridwar or personally visit Ayodhya. But make no mistake, he will continue to speak with a forked tongue, will send his lieutenant-in-chief, the chargesheeted Amit Shah, to Ayodhya to rekindle the Ram Mandir fire. Modi can only offer you a package deal: take it or leave it.

Mansoos is worried about Bohra Women working in Call Centers/Air Hostess that their moral character can be tarnished but has no problem a Bohra woman in Qomi Libas aka Rida touching a Non Mehram and asking a Kaafir to become her brother. Let us see how Adam/Progticide can defend this hypocrisy. Would they ask Kothar to issue another Farman that Bohra Women should not be touching hands of Non Mehram Kaafir.

When it comes to hypocrisy and lies, your leader and his cult take the cake.
I'd expect Bohra women to tie rakhi on the hands of a murderer before I

Why Do ‘They’ Love Narendra Modi ?

On August 14th, Narendra Modi declared that his Independence Day speech would attract as much attention as that of the Prime Minister. He appears to have been right. The fact that this is hardly unexpected should not obscure the deeper puzzle that it hides. It is a rare occurrence for a state level leader to suddenly get so much prominence in the media, and that too for such a long period. Why, then, have powerful forces in our society – including most of the media – chosen to endorse Modi? Why the sudden promotion of this particular leader at this particular time? What is it that he and his regime are offering?

Each of the standard explanations offered can easily be disposed of. There’s the claimed “Gujarat development model.” But even the staunchest BJP advocates have to scrounge and dig to find a single indicator in which Gujarat stands out. In most respects, Gujarat actually falls in the middle. Corporates themselves seem to prefer other States. Maharashtra and Karnataka (out of large States) have received more FDI; and a report by the “Institute for Competitiveness” reportedly also ranks Maharashtra higher than Gujarat. With respect to the oft-touted “success” of electrification, the 2011 Census reports that fifteen other States have a higher rate of electrified households than Gujarat – including Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala and Punjab. In terms of “clean and effective administration”, the CAG has twice indicted the Gujarat government for providing favours (a fact that has received little media coverage), and the move to render the State Lokayukta toothless demonstrate that Gujarat is no different from other major States in the country. In GDP growth rates from 2002 – 2011, Gujarat comes fourth. This is apart from the fact that the 2011 Human Development Report placed Gujarat at the eleventh position in human development, behind Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Maharashtra and Punjab.

There’s the fact that the Modi regime has won three consecutive elections. But he is hardly the first CM to do so; 12 others have, including, among serving CMs of large states, Naveen Patnaik and Tarun Gogoi (aside from, in the smaller States, Sheila Dikshit, Manik Sarkar, Ikram Obobi Singh and Pawan Chamling). Then there’s talk of his “new ideas” and “fresh thinking.” Yet even a cursory glance shows that Modi’s rhetoric is remarkably stale. Practically every statement made by this supposedly “remarkable administrator” is a rehash of ideas that date from twenty years ago. His statements on economic policy could have been taken from Manmohan Singh’s speeches in 1991. His statements on “secularism” are standard saffron rhetoric which we have heard since the 1980s. On anything other than ‘development’ and Hindutva, he has nothing to say at all.

So what exactly is the appeal of the Modi brand? Of course, there is one (and indeed only one) point that does distinguish the Modi regime: the 2002 massacres. No other leader so openly represents the politics of pogrom and killing. Hence some suspect that all this talk of development is just a smokescreen for promoting fascist politics. There is no doubt that those who support Modi, at the very least, do not particularly object to 2002. Nowhere was this clearer than in the reactions to his “puppy” remark; after this equation of organised slaughter with roadkill, two major English newspapers (The Times of India, July 15; Indian Express, July 16) ran lead editorials advising Modi to improve his “communications strategy,” making it clear that they not only have no problem with his attitude to mass murder, but that they regard themselves as part of his campaign team.

But it is also clear that Modi’s support from the powerful extends beyond those who identify with the Sangh. Several mainstream commentators have deliberately tried to claim that Modi is “moving away” from Hindutva, and he draws support from a whole spectrum of forces not known for any strong allegiance to anti-minority hate politics. The Modi phenomenon, in this sense, goes well beyond hatred alone. To understand where this originates, we need to look beyond Modi as an individual and understand the background of the forces that have seen fit to make him their face.

The 2002 pogrom worried these forces insofar as it damaged India’s international image (hence the continued obsession with any and every international visitor to Modi); but as long as such open violence and “vulgar expressions” of Hindutva were combined with lip service to secularism, they were quite happy to support the NDA, and expected that Hindu chauvinism (with accompanying authoritarianism) would provide the stable popular support base that they had so long lacked. In turn, the Hindutva brigade toned down some of their rhetoric in the English speaking sphere and embraced “reforms” wholeheartedly, culminating in the “India Shining” slogan (these issues are discussed in more detail here).

Hence the fact that practically every “reformist” intellectual – from Bibek Debroy to Jagdish Bhagwati – has embraced the non-existent ‘Gujarat model.’ Modi’s appeal is one of default; he brings nothing new to the table, but there’s no one else left. It is this bankruptcy which comes through in the vacuity of the Modi rhetoric.

It’s an old truism of politics that hysteria is a symptom of weakness, not strength. The sheer shrillness of the Modi campaign reflects the reformists’ sense that this might be their last chance, at least in this form. In order to survive, any new NDA under their control will have to rely on whipping up hatred and fascist politics, necessarily combined with intense repression. But such politics cannot last very long; history says it will collapse under its own contradictions, though it may well extract a human cost that is disproportionate to its time in power.

“Women Empowerment”
by Pheku India

Maya Kodnani

Does anyone remember Maya Kodnani? She was an MLA in 2002, present personally during the Naroda Gam and Naroda Patia riots. Witnesses testified that she was distributing swords to Hindu rioters, exhorting them to attack Muslims, and at one point fired a pistol.

According to testimony, backed by mobile phone records, she was present at the scene. According to unverified accounts, she was personally briefing a certain person and also taking close directions from him.

Over 95 people were killed. And included women and children. For her role in “Women and Child Development”, she was appointed Minister - Women and Child Development, by Pheku in 2007.

We now know what the Gujarat Model of “Development’ means.

She was tried and, on August 31, 2012, convicted of murder and conspiracy to commit murder by a court in Ahmedabad and was sentenced to 28 years in prison.

On 17th April, 2013, the Gujarat government decided to seek death penalty for Maya Kodnani by filing an appeal in the High Court against the Special Court’s judgement in the case. Within a month, on May 14, 2013, the Gujarat government subsequently withdrew its decision to seek the death penalty for Maya Kodnani.

Modi’s hands are soiled in complicity of killing of about 5,000 Muslims that include a Dawoodi Bohra Member of Parliament, Ehsan Jafri and scores other were burned alive by Modi inspired mob. Ehsan Jafri’s widow Zakiya Jafri is still fighting her battle for justice since 2002. However, she is hindered at every step by Modi influenced courts and officials. Modi calls Muslims as Babar ki Aulad (Progeny of Babar who attacked India).

Yet Burhanuddin saab and Kothar, his governing apparatus, send Bohras to events honoring Modi, for being cozy with Mr. Modi to protect their own wealth. As such, Mansoos recently while addressing Bohras, strongly advocated that Bohra women should stay home, work in kitchen, and stitch clothing. He said to Bohra women “Rotli banavo ne kapda sivo pan bahar na jao”. Yet, you see in this picture, those Rida clad Bohra women were sent for tying Rakhi to Modi and call him Bhai (Brother) and expect him to protect them knowing well that he did not protect those Muslim women during 2002 riots when they were being raped and killed.

Bohra leaders claim to be vicegenerant of Molana Ali (A.S.) who never gave up on principles even in the face of death; yet his followers’ actions are opportunistic and different.

Those who have observed Narendra Modi have some revealing – and chilling – things to say about him.

Social scientist Ashis Nandy had interviewed Narendra Modi in the early 1990s. He came out of the interview shaken. In his own words:

“More than a decade ago, when Narendra Modi was a nobody, a small-time RSS pracharak trying to make it as a small-time BJP functionary, I had the privilege of interviewing him. . . . Modi, it gives me no pleasure to tell the readers, met virtually all the criteria that psychiatrists, psycho-analysts and psychologists had set up after years of empirical work on the authoritarian personality. He had the same mix of puritanical rigidity, narrowing of emotional life, massive use of the ego defence of projection, denial and fear of his own passions combined with fantasies of violence – all set within the matrix of clear paranoid and obsessive personality traits. I still remember the cool, measured tone in which he elaborated a theory of cosmic conspiracy against India that painted every Muslim as a suspected traitor and a potential terrorist. I came out of the interview shaken and told Yagnik that, for the first time, I had met a textbook case of a fascist and a prospective killer, perhaps even a future mass murderer.”

Another social scientist, Shiv Vishwanathan, recently called Narendra Modi an “uncivilized creature” on prime time TV. He said he was sure of this term because he has done “ten years of investigations” on Gujarat. JD(U) leader Shivanand Tewari had earlier said that Modi’s body language reeked of arrogance. He recently remarked (after Modi’s rather perverse and murderous ‘Kutte ka Bachcha’ comment during an interview with Reuters) that Modi should undergo “psycho analysis”.

However, we needn’t rely on these impressions – based, as they are, on body language and psychological profiling – to assess Modi’s character; we could simply look at the record of his conduct.

There are no less than 45 authenticated reports meticulously documenting the Gujarat carnage, which was state-sponsored and masterminded at the highest level. The mass-scale violence was facilitated and executed by the Gujarat police and bureaucracy, including the top brass, and implemented on the ground by blood-thirsty mobs and gang-rapists of the Sangh Parivar, Modi’s ministers and Hindutva leaders. The documentation includes the NHRC report and the bulky volumes of the People’s Tribunal, comprising eminent former judges as members. There are also scores of eye-witness accounts, including those of women – such as Bilquis Bano and Zakia Jafri – who were victims of the state-sponsored violence.

Zakia Jafri’s court petition and the arguments and evidence being presented with it point to a nexus between the Gujarat government and the so-called rioters and to the fact that the violent acts were planned with detailed precision. Several indicators point to Modi himself. The meeting of the top brass in the government one day before the state sponsored killings is a crucial indicator.

Other documents describe in detail the organized carnage and its aftermath in the tragic and inhuman mass refugee camps. People were hacked and burned alive. Swords ripped apart women’s stomachs. There were mass rapes and grotesque public spectacles of gang rapes. Kerosene-filled match boxes were put inside children’s mouths. Ravaged women and children were thrown alive into bonfires. All of this has been documented meticulously and extensively by journalists, activists, lawyers, witnesses, officials, filmmakers, and others.

One person to speak out was Harsh Mander, then an IAS officer, who wrote in Outlook (March 19, 2002) soon after the killings:

“ …I force myself to write a small fraction of all that I heard and saw, because it is important that we all know. Or maybe also because I need to share my own burdens.

What can you say about a woman eight months pregnant who begged to be spared? Her assailants instead slit open her stomach, pulled out her foetus and slaughtered it before her eyes. What can you say about a family of nineteen being killed by flooding their house with water and then electrocuting them with high-tension electricity?

What can you say? A small boy of six in Juhapara camp described how his mother and six brothers and sisters were battered to death before his eyes. He survived only because he fell unconscious, and was taken for dead.

A family escaping from Naroda Patiya, one of the worst-hit settlements in Ahmedabad, spoke of losing a young woman and her three month old son, because a police constable directed her to `safety' and she found herself instead surrounded by a mob which doused her with kerosene and set her and her baby on fire.

I have never known a riot which has used the sexual subjugation of women so widely as an instrument of violence in the recent mass barbarity in Gujarat. There are reports everywhere of gang-rape, of young girls and women, often in the presence of members of their families, followed by their murder by burning alive, or by bludgeoning with a hammer and in one case with a screw driver.

Women in the Aman Chowk shelter told appalling stories about how armed men disrobed themselves in front of a group of terrified women to cower them down further. In Ahmedabad, most people I met— social workers, journalists, survivors— agree that what Gujarat witnessed was not a riot, but a terrorist attack followed by a systematic, planned massacre, a pogrom.

Everyone spoke of the pillage and plunder, being organised like a military operation against an external armed enemy…”

Given all of this monstrous history, how is it that Narendra Modi, the architect and chief executive of that history, is being hailed as a successful leader of a state and considered a legitimate potential leader of the nation? Do we Indians really have such short memories? Or is it that this entire ‘Modi Shining’ melodrama is a transparent political stunt, concocted by vested interests in the corporate-media nexus, that might just boomerang in the days to come?

The myth of the ‘Modi miracle’ in Gujarat is as obviously fake as the Rambo Act in the Himalayas whereby he allegedly saved 15,000 marooned Gujaratis (only Gujaratis!) in one day. No wonder he is being called all kinds of things now: Feku, Fakendra Modi, Nambo Pambo Rambo, etc. His babbling bubble bursts every time he is confronted by an unrehearsed situation, like when TV journalist Karan Thapar reminded him about the ghost of Godhra in one of those rare interviews that was neither “paid news” nor fixed with pre-arranged content. Thapar reminded Modi of the Supreme Court observation that he was a “Modern Day Nero” who played his tune while people were burnt alive. Suddenly, all the arrogant muscle-flexing and thumping of his expanded 55 inch chest seem to elude him. He fumbled and fudged in bad English, started sweating profusely, asked for a glass of water and abruptly ended the interview seeking “dostana sambandh” (friendly relations). (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHS_eSoOBzg).

Such incidents are rare inside Gujarat, where Modi has clamped down on dissent, ushered in a totally one-man authoritarian rule, destroyed even RSS and VHP (his natural ideological allies) and subsidized and pampered a bunch of shamelessly greedy corporates who have learnt no lessons from history. Sources now say that these very corporates are subsidizing sections of the media into broadcasting ‘live’ Modi shows as uninterrupted media spectacles, which are clearly both paid news and advertising posing as news. The Feku Rambo story in a leading English daily from Uttarkhand is a brazen example of this practice.

Even Amit Shah, Modi’s best chum, who was jailed for the Sohrabuddin fake encounter murder case and may still go back to jail, is now being shown ‘live’ on some channels. As if, both Shah and Modi were personalities of such great charisma, scholarship, saintliness and vision, that the entire nation can be seduced into a collective, cathartic orgasm watching them ‘live’.

Perhaps there is an undercurrent of excitement in the fickle, upwardly mobile classes in urban areas; but a nation-wide Modi wave is the figment of his own xenophobic imagination with some craftily manufactured consent of the media. The media and a few fat cat businessmen can’t win an election in a complex, fragmented, poverty-stricken and underdeveloped country like India. Remember India Shining in 2004?

As the saying goes: once a mass murderer, always a mass murderer. And the people are not likely to overlook that fact. Even those who demolished the Babri Masjid and then went on a communal rampage of bloodletting all over the country, know that the politics of bloodshed, hate and polarization is not the metaphysical stuff that will attract the soul of this country of deprivations and want. If that had been so, the BJP-RSS would have been ruling in UP and in India. If that had been so, the Ram mandir would have been built, at the very least.

Journalist Seema Mustafa recently posted a short comment, which ably sums up Modi’s media performance::

“Modi is digging his grave, slowly and systematically. He is like a robot, made over with Botox and silicone, rehearsed and limited. He is visibly uncomfortable outside Gujarat; good only when he has rehearsed a performance as in Delhi University; falling apart in interviews or un-rehearsed situations. He is bigoted and knows that even benign questions can bring out his divisiveness and hatred for those not like him. By the time elections come around, the BJP might just find him to be a bigger liability than an asset! At least India will.”

With his multi-crore PR machinery, Modi seem like The Invincible Iron Man, but it has only exposed the chinks in his armour. One international PR agency that managed his affairs at a huge cost (who pays these exorbitant sums running into millions?) to boost his ratings and that of the fraud that was ‘Vibrant Gujarat’, actually had an illustrious track record of showcasing the likes of George Bush and Dick Cheney, despite the war justified by WMDs that didn’t exist, despite the embedded journalists covering the “news” of that war, despite thousands of people massacred in ravaged Iraq, despite the propping up of notorious dictators and autocrats, and despite the shady agencies working for Mossad and Israel. A recent report in a weekly publication revealed how some TV media slots are being arranged and rearranged –‘Modified’ if you will– and how some anchors and editors are seemingly quickly shifting their political positions, under the influence of various corporate offers on behalf of Modi. The cases of Madhu Kishwar and Pratap Bhanu Mehta have come out in the open, and there is probably more to the story. On the platform of this paid-off “news media” Modi bluffs and blusters and reels off fake statistics on his “live shows” while millions of fake “likes” are generated on Facebook to glorify him.

But ultimately, the best PR machinery can’t find Modi the salvation he wants. There are too many sinister threads in which he is tangled. The carnage in 2002 is a living narrative and a grotesque memory which runs like a car driving over the ‘kutte ka bachcha’ and leaves a bloody trail of stories that just can’t be eliminated. One is reminded of the last sequence in the film Maqbool, when the blood just keeps appearing on the walls and no desperate efforts at wiping it away can keep it from coming back.

In any other civilized society, Modi would already have been driven out. He would have been treated exactly like the butcher Slobodan Milosevic or the ‘blood diamond’ criminal Charles Taylor. In other circumstances, he and his gangsters who masterminded the massacre and the fake encounters, would have been chased and persecuted like the mass murderers of the Holocaust. (Remember, the RSS founding fathers glorified both Hitler and the Holocaust. Yet, ironically, the Mossad is backing Modi!).

Indeed, Modi has been blacklisted in many countries– including the US and certain European and Latin American countries –despite the fact that a cash-strapped UK’s Rightwing PM David Cameron and some of his unethical and equally cash-strapped EU buddies are trying to create a bridge over the bloody waters in Gujarat by creating a ‘safe investment entry’ for Modi. For all you know, Modi might meet the fate of Augusto Pinochet if he gets trapped in a foreign country which genuinely respects human rights and opposes fascism. Except for cruel, totalitarian states like China (which loves him) and sundry dictators and ethnic-cleansing fascists, his geography of relocation would surely be a thing of uncanny predictability if he were ever to need an escape from India. Even the prospect of landing in the International Court of Justice at the Hague might not seem too farfetched.

But will he ever need to contemplate running from India, where power rules justice by apparent subterfuge and the likes of Narendra Modi can be treated like respected public figures? Perhaps that day will come. After all, even a monster will eventually find his rat traps. Like Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler of the Congress, accused in the state-sponsored carnage of Sikhs in November 1984, Modi too will escape only to be trapped yet again.

Life is short. And not even Modi is immortal. Anything can happen.

For instance, the murder of Haren Pandya, top BJP leader, former minister of state for home in Gujarat and Modi’s powerful rival, is a mystery that can suddenly reopen, even inside the RSS and BJP. Whispers within the BJP in Delhi often speak the unspeakable. Pandya’s father had openly alleged that Modi was behind the murder. His wife too recently met the alleged ‘jailed murderer’ and clearly suggested that she believed he has been implicated wrongly. So who murdered Pandya?

Moreover, the Zakia Jafri petition may bring to light events from Modi’s past that would be very difficult to gloss over by flashy media blitzes.

The facts recited in the petition raises the questions like why did Modi send VHP rabble rouser Jaideep Patel to Godhra on the tragic day when people were burnt in S-6 coach of the Sabarmati Express? I contend – as I have argued in more detail in my July column in Hardnews – that Patel was sent to stir up the violence.

When the public discussion of Modi begins to focus on these events, many more questions will begin to arise. How is it that Modi had no clue about the sinister doings of Jaideep Patel, or Bajrangi, or his favourite minister Mayaben Kodnani– and their involvement in the massacres? Why did he keep Kodnani in the cabinet for so long even after the carnage? Why was Patel strutting around Modi’s fake Sadbhavna Mission stage in Ahmedabad as a hero? How is it that Modi had no clue how Ishrat Jahan or Sadiq Jamal (who was proved innocent) were on a ‘Mission Assassination Modi’, and that they were bumped off by his favourite top cops after spells in custody in shady farmhouses etc? Good governance? Or plain murder?

If we take Modi’s assertions of innocence at face value, do we not necessarily have to also conclude that he is simply a clueless incompetent? Twenty-two encounters – many of them proved fake – have taken place during his regime, while he was holding the home ministry; his top cops were committing crimes (for which they have been subsequently convicted and jailed); there have been a procession of witnesses and ‘approvers’ testifying to the multiple, cold blooded murders that happened on his watch; and he knew nothing? That in itself is unforgivable.

Mukul Sinha, a lawyer, fighting the encounter cases in court, says these people were killed by the Gujarat police to profile Modi as a great Hindu leader.

And what about Sohrabuddin Sheikh, his wife Kausarbi, and Tulsiram Prajapati, and the entrenched extortion and smuggling racket in which a former BJP minister from Rajasthan and Amit Shah were apparently involved? Many of the same cops murdered them one by one, in which similar farm houses in the outskirts of Ahmedabad were the locations of custody and perhaps torture and rape. No remains of Kauserbi have been found, though there are pointers that she was killed and burnt and then the ashes destroyed in DG Vanjara’s village.

Perhaps the PM’s post is Modi’s the only way out of these traps. That may explain the desperation. And yet, Modi refuses to meet the press, address press conferences, or do Q and A sessions in public or private. Perhaps he will do it with only those whose favours he has already purchased. That is why his manufactured lectures with fake statistics are always one-dimensional and unilateral; there are no questions, debate, dissent or discussion, even in spaces where he is treated as a prophet, and the “discourse” is totally stage-managed.

Let Modi do a press conference in every state capital and give journalists the freedom to ask diverse questions. Let him come to an open debate – ‘live’, say – in JNU, or at the Press Club in Delhi, or in Calcutta’s Presidency University. Let him come in for a live interview with Karan Thapar once again.

The Reuters interview is a give-away. Every time a bigoted hate champion driven by an expensive PR machine speaks off-script to an intelligent query, he will showcase his authentic inner self, crude fantasies and fascist perversities. The kutte ka bachcha statement was no slip. It was a lucid revelation of the man’s pathological mind and soul, and the RSS’s civilizational politics of hate. It also tells a god-damned bloody story, like the blood sticking on the wall in Maqbool.

'File chargesheet against Narendra Modi, others in 2002 post-Godhra riots

The lawyer of late Congress MP Ehsan Jafri's wife Zakia on Thursday told a magistrate's court in Ahmedabad that it should reject the closure report of Special Investigation Team which gives a clean chit to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and others in the 2002 post-Godhra riots case.

Zakia Jafri, whose husband was killed during the riots, has opposed the Supreme Court-appointed SIT's report and sought filing of chargesheet against Narendra Modi and others for their alleged complicity in the riots conspiracy.

"Relying on the detailed notes on legal and factual aspects...we strongly urge the court to allow our prayers to reject the final report and to file chargesheet against the accused," said advocate Sanjay Parikh.

In his concluding argument before the Metropolitan Magistrate B J Ganatra, Parikh also urged the court to refer to the material submitted, which, he said, "prima facie establishes the commission of crime of conspiracy and abetment besides other independent offences under the Indian Penal Code (IPC)".

"At this stage, the court has to make a prima facie assessment to find out whether offence was committed by the accused in order to take cognisance and issue process. For this exercise, this court is neither bound by the label given to the report on investigation or the conclusions drawn by the SIT...A reasonable suspicion is enough to register a crime, not actual proof of its commission which has to be established during the trial," Parikh said.

Further hearing has been fixed on September 2 when the court has allowed the SIT lawyer to submit his reply to Jafri's contentions.
