90% Indians oppose Modi: tweets Javed Akhtar

Bollywood ‘s scriptwriter, lyricist and activist Javed Akhtar on thursday said that some people think that opposing Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi is an anti-national activity.

On a microblogging website Twitter, Akhtar tweeted: “Some idiots imply that opposing Modi is an anti national activity. Are they suggesting that we, the 90 % Indians are anti nationals.”

Last month, the lyricist and Rajya Sabha MP had retorted to those who were sending him “indecent messages”.

On Twitter, Akhtar wrote: “The kind of crude , indecent and Vulgar messages I get from Modi lovers establishes the low quality of his followers (sic).”

The Akhtar bashing by Modi’s supporters began when in October, Akhtar said Narendra Modi can never be a good prime minister, alleging that the BJP’s PM aspirant was not only tainted of communal riots but was also “undemocratic”.

“Besides, all talks of involvement in Gujarat riots of 2002 which are before the courts, this man (Modi) is not democratic,” Akhtar had told reporters on the sidelines of a school function in Patna.

FEKU MODI --- "MODI WAVE" ??? MY FOOT !!!!

While the corporate media, as usual, is trying to hail the recent elections as a pro-Modi verdict, facts state otherwise.

1. Chattisgarh - BJP vote share improved merely from 40% to 41%, while Congress' moved from 38.6% to 40.3%. No Modi wave discernible here.

2. Madhya Pradesh - BJP vote share improved from 37.6 to 38%. Again no signs of any wave.

3. Delhi - was the litmus test as it has one of the heaviest concentration of internet Hindus, political fixers, news-tv studios and jab jaanta walas (those who know everything). BJP's vote share fell to its lowest in twenty years !
- Modi addressed four rallies in the capital at Chandni Chowk, Sultanpur, Ambedkar Nagar and Rohini: Congress won two seats and AAP won the other two while the BJP LOST all four seats.
- BJP vote share fell to 31.9% from 36.34%.

A leading Indian newspaper, 'The Economic Times' had removed the below mentioned article after putting it online. This is how even the media is purchased by filthy politicians like Namo who knows nothing except "hate politics".

Is Modi Our Palin?

Dheeraj Tiwari

Insulting the intelligence of voters is could be suicidal in an election year. In the 2008 US Presidential elections, Sarah Palin, the Republican nominee for the vice president’s post, committed that offence. In 2013, is Narendra Modi following in her footsteps?

When Palin started her campaign, commentators gave the ‘hockey mom’ a real chance. After all, she was folksy, which America loves, good looking and a would-be grandmother to boot. The concoction was deadly and Republicans
lapped it up. A war veteran, John McCain as the head and a mommy as his aide fell in line with the American dream.

Modi’s team has also created a similar aura around him. Decisive, incorruptible and earthy – are the characters which largely define Modi’s campaign. If BJP is to be believed, Modi is the underdog of Indian politics, a ‘chaiwala’ who through his sheer hard work has managed to rise in the political hierarchy. In his own words, he is not a ‘shehzada’ but a ‘sevak.’

Till this point, the script runs perfect. But the American dream crumpled when the mommy started getting her facts wrong. Palin was ridiculed when she claimed to have an insight into American foreign policy because Russia is the next door neighbour to her state of Alaska.

Back home, Namo replicated that feat in his Independence Day speech at Bhuj. He almost took the same neighbourhood line as Palin and while lambasting Pakistan claimed that his voice reached Pakistan first and Delhi
later. This came from the same man who some months ago had offered Sindh province in Pakistan, the ‘Gujarat model’ to overcome its power crisis.

While Palin called Afghanistan a neighbouring country, Modi brought Taxila from Pakistan to Bihar. There is an uncanny resemblance between these two politicians in getting their facts wrong, again and again. Their supporters
may term this as unpretentious behaviour.

Perhaps, voters could have forgiven Palin, the winner of the Miss Wasilla pageant for not knowing what lie beyond the American shores but the crowd booed her when, at a public rally, she said that the state of North West Hampshire is in the Northwest of Americas. Modi so far has been spared this public ignominy.

A closer look at their campaign and one gets a feeling that perhaps the fates of Palin and Modi are intertwined. Days after being nominated for the Presidential elections, the Republican supporters were shocked that Palin’s unwed daughter was five months pregnant. Palin, who by then had projected herself as ‘Bible-believing Christian,’ ultimately lost out on the traditional conservative Republican base. Modi, too, is now embroiled in a snooping scandal as his aide Amit Shah has managed to score a self goal against his ‘saheb’.

In the midst of this jamboree these down-to-earth leaders and their supporters forget that the voter cannot be fooled, or at least for long. So, when Palin described that the Iraq War is ‘a task that is from God,’ voters knew that she was making no sense. Unfortunately for his supporters, Modi is catching up with Palin.

After historical blunders such as calling Gandhi Mohanlal instead of Mohandas, and claiming that Nehru did not attend Patel’s funeral, Modi is now treading on more difficult terrain. In a Jodhpur rally, Modi claimed that he may not be as educated as the country’s finance minister but he knew that buying gold is not leading to inflation. His first lecture in economics may have got a thunderous applause in the rally but he might have lost the faith of voters who till then would have bought into his image as the deliverer of Gujarat’s vibrant economy.

It is time that Modi should learn from the mistakes which Palin committed. After all he would not like to be remembered as Palin, who finally had to be told that there was no tradition of concession speeches by running mates, and that she would not be speaking. Not anymore.

New Audio Tapes Reveal Amit Shah instructing Singhal to stalk Pranlal Soni’s visit to Pradeep Sharma’s house

Seldom before has any person stung himself to establish his own guilt. Amit Shah has done precisely that in the Mansi Soni snooping case. GL Singhal who was his pet police officer, recorded all the instructions given by Amit Shah to follow Mansi Soni and Pradeep N Sharma, IAS and those audio-recordings were handed over to CBI by Singhal. The tapes then found its way to the public domain through the Cobra-post. One set of instructions of Amit Shah to GL Singhal was to follow and stalk the visit of Pranlal Soni (father of Mansi Soni) and his family from Ahmedabad to Bhavnagar to the house of Pradeep Sharma!

Singhal religiously followed the instructions of Amit Shah and recorded every phone call. The recorded conversation of 18th August,2009 and 21, 22 and 23rd August, 2009, totally demolishes the story of BJP that Modi had provided the police coverage to Mansi to “protect” her from the harassment by Pradeep Sharma. It may be recalled that Madhu Kishwar, an ardent supporter of Modi has alleged that Pradeep Sharma was so criminally minded that it was apprehended that he might hurt her physically.

In doing this meticulous job of tracking Pradeep Sharma and the family of Pranlal Soni, Amit Shah has in fact established the close relation between Pradeep Sharma and the Soni family destroying the BJP’s allegation that Mansi was facing any threat from Pradeep Sharma. This is called hit-wicket.

Amartya Sen axes Narayana Murthy's Narendra Modi view, absolves Rahul Gandhi

Narendra Modi's suitability as the Prime Minister of India was rejected by Nobel laureate Amartya Sen who said Gujarat riots of 2002 are not comparable with the anti-Sikh riots in Delhi in 1984, thereby rejecting Infosys chief N R Narayanamurthy's view that the post-Godhra violence should not stand in Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) PM candidate's way to top post in country.

While describing as "absolute shame" the fact that those responsible for the 1984 riots had not been brought to judgement, he sought to differentiate between the 1984 riots and those that occurred in Gujarat under the watch of Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

Amartya Sen argued that Congress leaders, Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh and Rahul Gandhi, who were fighting elections today, were not the people responsible for the anti-Sikh riots. No one had accused them of that, whereas Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister when the riots took place.

Moreover, he said that the anti-Sikh riots were not something that fitted into the Congress philosophy. "There is no philosophy of killing Sikhs in the Congress," he told NDTV in an interview.

On the other hand, he said that treatment of Muslims in Gujarat raised the question as to whether they were treated as second class citizens. "That is a continuing problem," he said, adding Narayanamurthy was a great friend of his but he did not agree with him on this issue.

Asked whether the recent Assembly poll results showed that there was a Narendra Modi wave or more of an anti-Congress wave which he was riding, Sen replied, "I would tend to think that there is an anti-Congress wave perhaps in the sense that the party is exhausted.

Narendra Modi himself was getting Mansi Soni’s phone calls tapped-recorded through CID Intel, Gujarat

A careful examination of the snoopgate tapes would however disclose a startling fact which has escaped everybody’s attention so far – that Gujarat CM Narendra Modi himself was conducting a secondary line of surveillance by getting Mansi Soni’s phone calls tapped/recorded/archived through the then IG of CID Intelligence (State) Shri Arun K Sharma.

In fact a new tape, of a conversation that happened on the evening of 22nd August, 2009, reveals Amit Shah candidly admitting that Saheb had far better information about the snooping than he or the entire police team had. Amit said, “Saheb somehow gets to know everything…”

This is a new tape not available in public domain yet, where you can hear Amit Shah saying “Saheb ne hari khabar to padij jaay che”, the English translation being “Saheb somehow gets to know everything…”. All other conversations quoted above are already in the cobra-post revelation. The new tape and its entire transcript is posted below.

DOESNT THE BELOW MENTIONED FATWA FROM MODI REMIND YOU OF THE FATWA ISSUED BY KOTHAR COMPELLING SCHOOL/COLLOEGE STUDENTS TO COMPULSARILY ATTEND THE DAI'S AND MUFFY'S MOHURRUM VAYEZ.

Notice to students for not attending Narendra Modi's 'Run for Unity'

Narendra Modi's much-hyped 'Run for Unity' campaign to mobilise support for the world's tallest statue in Gujarat has run into controversy with a college in Jamnagar imposing a fine of Rs. 100 on students who did not participate in the two-km marathon.

Over 200 students of a commerce college in Bhanwad near Jamnagar in western Gujarat were shocked by a notice that said a fine of Rs. 100 each will be charged from them for not turning up for the marathon held on December 15 to build the multi-crore Sardar Patel statue.

Though the college authorities withdrew the order after critics and local media lashed out at the Gujarat Chief Minister for garnering support through coercion, the student community was left fuming.

"We were directed that we should turn up for the run. But since we could not, we were slapped a notice and told to pay Rs. 100 as fine. We were even threatened that we would not be allowed to participate in the exams," a student said.

The college authorities admit that such a notice was indeed pasted in the college premises.

Modi’s image managers came up with a novel idea of charging Rs 5 from people who came to attend Modi’s rally in Bhopal and Hyderabad. However, the Gujarati students, who did not turn up in CM’s political event ‘Run for Unity’ marathon of December 15 were asked to cough up Rs.100 each.

Notice which asked Students to payup Rs 100 :-

Narendra Modi is on the lookout for yet another APCO

Narendra Modi is obsessed with his ‘image’. Besides spending millions of dollars of taxpayers’ money for PR Firms like APCO and the Rajesh Jain’s NitiCentral team, Modi also keeps a very close watch on what is published about him in news papers and media channels. The journalists who are based in Gujarat, especially Ahmedabad, are well aware of how Media is controlled and manipulated by the top bosses of Gujarat Government. One such account is given by Kinghsuk Nag, the former Resident Editor of Ahmedabad edition of Times of India. He writes in his book ‘The Namo Story’:

Modi also loves to project himself as a hero, a powerful man, destroying all villains. Any contra-projection angers him. I got a taste of this on the morrow of the Akshardham incident in November 2002.

When The Times of India reported how Modi and Advani ventured to enter the complex and posed next to the bodies of the two assailants who had been shot to death, I was greeted by an early morning call from an incensed Modi.

‘Why are you writing that we went in after the intruders were killed? It conveys I am a weak man,’ Modi said.

It is unsurprising that on the morning after a terrorist incident of this scale, Modi’s real concern was about the impact of the attack on his image.

The biggest dent in Modi’s image continues to be his diabolical role in the 2002 Gujarat Genocide. To wash those blood stains, Modi keeps trying different varieties of ‘Surf Excel’, APCO was one of them. Now he’s on the look out for yet another APCO. In June 2013, Gujarat Government published a Request For Proposal for selection of PR (Public Relations) Firms. Even though the official purpose is to bolster Gujarat’s image, we all know who would be the real beneficiary of the PR exercise.

Question is, how long are the taxpayers going to pay so that blood stained PM Candidate can complete his metamorphosis into a Vikas Purush?

Modi verdict brings no change in US visa policy

Washington, Dec 27 (IANS) An Indian court's rejection of a petition seeking the prosecution of Narendra Modi for his alleged role in the 2002 Gujarat riots has brought no change in US visa policy for BJP's prime ministerial candidate.

The Gujarat chief minister, who was denied a diplomatic visa to the US in 2005 over the riots, was welcome to apply for a visa and wait for a review which will be grounded in American law, a State Department official said Thursday repeating the US formulation.

Meanwhile, The New York Times reported the court verdict and the Indian government ordering a probe into allegations that a top Modi aide oversaw wide-ranging surveillance of a woman on his behalf as "Victory, and Setback, for Indian Opposition Leader".

"The fiery head of India's leading opposition party, who remains under pressure for his handling of an ethnic riot 11 years ago, won a victory on Thursday in one of the many disputes dogging him as he seeks to become India's next prime minister, but faced a setback in another," it said in a report.

"Neither case is likely to derail Mr. Modi's growing popularity in India, since his tough-guy image is a big part of his appeal. Yet taken together, the cases demonstrate why he is a deeply divisive figure," it said.

I was shaken to the core – Kaun Hai Yeh Insaan? Impostor at large.

within a few months however , mindless violence of 2002 had dealt us another unexpected blow. Innocents were killed…I was shaken to the core. ‘Grief’ ,’Sadness’, ‘Misery’, ‘Pain’, ‘Anguish’, ‘Agony’ – mere words could not capture the absolute emptiness one felt on witnessing such inhumanity.

Who could have used such meloncholic words and phrases to describe his own “shattered feelings” for the 2002 Gujarat violence? Even if Amitabh Bachchan gave you unlimited lifelines, you wouldn’t have guessed that the above lines were actually authored by someone who calls himself Narendra Modi and blogs on a website called narendramodi.in. The man who presided over the most brutal killings of over 1000 innocent men, women and children and had actually held a “Gaurav (glory) Yatra” in September, 2002, within seven months of the massacre to celebrate it, now wants us to believe the he was shaken to the core!

Modi claimed in his blog that words like sadness, pain etc cannot capture his real feelings. It was absolute emptiness he felt on witnessing such inhumanity! How can a man be such a big hypocrite? Let us recall what he had actually said in his speech in Bahucharji, Mehsana district, on 9 September, 2002, as a part of his Gaurav (glory) Yatra.

What brothers, should we run relief camps? Should I start children-producing centres? We want to achieve progress by pursuing the policy of family planning. We are five, they have 25! Can’t Gujarat implement family planning? Whose inhibitions are coming in our way? Which religious sect is coming in the way? Why is money not reaching the poor? If some people go on producing children, their children will do cycle puncture repair only.

This is how Modi had expressed his ‘anguish’ and ‘pain’ on September 9th, 2002.

These children producing centres as Mr Modi refers to relief camps were home to over 98,000 (NHRC figure) men, women and children who had to leave their homes to save their lives. This extremely shattered man who was also supposed to be the Chief Minister of the State had refused to visit a single relief camp till former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee visited Shah Alam relief camp in Ahmedabad on April 4, 2002 – a full 35 days after the massacre. A story in Frontline (Volume 19 – Issue 10, May 11-24, 2002) reported the miserable conditions existing in the relief camps in Gujarat:

After Noorbanu and others in the Jehangir Nagar relief camp at Vatva received paltry sums as compensation for housing, the occupants of the camp have refused the government’s cheques. Of the 300-odd families in the camp, only 23 have received housing compensation so far.

The refugees’ hopes of returning home grow dimmer as the violence continues and the government’s half-hearted rehabilitation measures fail to provide any real support. Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee’s efforts to reassure the riot-affected people during his visit to Gujarat on April 4 came rather late – 35 days after the violence began. His promises regarding relief and rehabilitation have not yet been implemented properly by the State government. The only time Chief Minister Narendra Modi visited a relief camp housing Muslims was when he trailed the Prime Minister.

Let us now compare the lie spelt out in his latest blog expressing anguish and pain for the poor riot victims. Modi states that:

on one side was the pain of the victims of the earthquakes and on the other the pain of the victims of the riots. In decisively confronting this great turmoil, I had to single-mindedly focus all strength given to me by the almighty on the task of peace, justice and rehabilitation.

The reality of 2002 and the relief camps as reported in the Frontline story wholly destroys the carefully worded blog that is supposed to impress the gullible citizens so that Modi gets a clean chit in the eyes of the would be 2014 voters.

The same man who now calls the riots as “mindless violence” had called the pogrom of 2002 a “mass agitation”. In an interview, also published on Modi’s original and now obliterated website and given to then Senior Editor V. Shankar Aiyar and Special Correspondent Uday Mahurkar of India Today on March 18, 2002, while responding to a question about the brutality of the riots, this is what Modi had stated:

Q. Why do you think the rioting had such a brutal tinge to it?
A. It wasn’t merely a communal riot but something like a mass agitation.

If REAL Modi is the man who called the riots a “mass agitation” and referred to the ensuing relief camps housing over 98,000 riot victims as “children producing centres” not worthy enough to be graced by him, who is this impostor pretending to be a SHATTERED Modi on narendramodi.in?

"Where was the pain when affidavits about their innocence were filed in courts? Where was the pain when lawyers were paid for defending the indefensible? Where was the pain when the state did not reach out to those who were crying for help? Where was the pain of those who were seeking justice but were left in the cold? Where was the pain when the state was collaborating with the accused to settle their affidavits, while they were being prosecuted in court?," Sibal asked.

So Kothar is playing high stacks gamble! Betting on Modi...if he goes through ...they will have invested successfully to gain Modi grateful ness and will be a launch pad for Mansoos era of supremacy .

If Modi fails the losses are minimised. Everything will be forgotten. This is a master class political move by Kothar. I have always stated they have immense capacity to out gun us in ideas and moves. If we as reformists were organised, daring and cunning as they are we would have significant leverage in resolving our issues.

What is uncertain what Modi thinks of Bohras...in a state of 50 million or 1 billion if he does become the P M ...how does he value 1 million Bohras? I doubt much and he will know as he is a master politician too and with solid advisors that Bohras are not influential in Muslim issues. He knows he is using them for publicity and playing with a very tame animal that will not bite whatever the situation.

This is like King Kong vs Godzilla . We are the little princess tossed around.

Point is who is the master and who is the subordinate ...I think Modi has the upper hand

A VERY WELL WRITTEN ARTICLE :-

Ashis Nandy is a psychoanalyst and this is his assessment of Narendra Modi :-

Almost nothing reveals the decline and degeneration of Gujarati middle class culture more than its present Chief Minister, Narendra Modi. Not only has he shamelessly presided over the riots and acted as the chief patron of rioting gangs, the vulgarities of his utterances have been a slur on civilised public life. His justifications of the riots, too, sound uncannily like that of Slobodan Milosevic, the Serbian president and mass murderer who is now facing trial for his crimes against humanity. I often wonder these days why those active in human rights groups in India and abroad have not yet tried to get international summons issued against Modi for colluding with the murder of hundreds and for attempted ethnic cleansing. If Modi’s behaviour till now is not a crime against humanity, what is?

Prajatantra Vs Rajashahi :: Arvind Kejriwal Vs Narendra Modi

Scene (1): One elected Chief Minister arrives in a Metro rail without any guards trailing him. Lakhs of people spontaneously gather at Ramleela maidan to cheer their own leader who takes his oath in the name of the people. The massive celebration is organized with virtually no expenditure..

Scene (2): A Prime Ministerial candidate arrives in a helicopter in Mumbai and lands in the University campus, in violation of the orders of the Vice Chancellor, surrounded by 108 gun totting black cats. Eleven special trains and hundreds of bus brings few lakhs cheer-leaders to the venue for whom five lakh food packets had been prepared to supply them sufficient energy to hail their Hitler. The magnum show costs the promoters of the party in excess of 25 crores..

Since 1947, people of India have been thirsting to see the scene described in Scene (1); for 66 years however the feudal-capital nexus has promoted the autocratic culture of performing raj-abhisheks that over-awes the common masses and profiles the leader as a “King”. Let us salute Kejriwal and his team for at least conjuring the image of a Republic that we had forgotten!

For the last four years, a national conspiracy is being hatched to foist a corporate sponsored stooge as the leader of the country. The task had become rather easy after the Congress led UPA exposed their corrupt underbelly and went into a free fall. In this vacuum, BJP funded by the corporate houses could trumpet their chosen leader who could satisfy the demands of both the domestic as well as global corporates. In absence of any other visible alternative, the juggernaut of the right wingers was dangerously moving towards Delhi. But suddenly Delhi itself has given them the biggest jolt.

The sudden metamorphosis that we see in the politics of Delhi is indeed miraculous. The subjective factors had ripened to the extent where the people were willing to risk a completely untested political outfit than surrender to BJP or Congress. More than the concerted efforts of Kejriwal and his team, it is the collective consciousness of the Delhites that has led to this unusual upheaval.

We at TruthOfGujarat believe that this is the first awakening towards a genuine Prajatantra (Democracy) within ofcourse the bourgeois frame work. We got our freedom at the stroke of the midnight hour but we now have a Republic in broad daylight – let us rejoice this day in the defense of democracy.

Narendra Modi chose 28th February to register his website, an odd coincidence?

Everything about Narendra Modi appears to revolve around 28th February, the day on which anti-muslim riots took place in 2002. Even his website narendramodi.in was registered on 28th February. Isn’t that an odd coincidence?

AND THE BOHRIS FALL AT THE FEET OF NARENDRA MODI
Countless words have been written on this topic. Periodically I visit this topic but what escapes me is that not much has been written to enlighten me, or other Forum members, as to the motives of Kothar. National and international journals have touched on the riots, its assessments, connivance and ultimately legal prosecutions. What is baffling is the question as to why Kothar has developed amnesia on the part Modi & co. played during the riots and its impact on Bohras. What does Kothar aim to achieve. What is its agenda. I have mentioned in my other posts many times that Kothar considers Bohras as fodder and is able to impose its will on them whatever agenda it wants to follow. Bohras are a 'vote-bank'. Kothar will pronounce a 'farmaan' and Bohras will follow it.

Withdraw FIR against Teesta: CPM

CPM politburo on Monday demanded that FIR lodged against activist Teesta Setalvad in an Ahmedabad police station be withdrawn immediately. Party said the timing of the case is suspect as Zakia Jafri is in the process of filing an appeal against the ruling of the lower court in favour of the SIT's clean chit to Narendra Modi.

Condemning the Gujarat government, CPM said, "FIR filed against Teesta Setalvad in an Ahmedabad police station is a most vindictive act by the Modi Government designed as a form of punishment for her fight for justice on behalf of Zakia Jaffri and other victim families of the Gujarat violence in 2002."

The party said, "It is a measure of the contempt for minimum democratic norms by the Modi Government that it has time and again sought to suppress through threats, warnings, false FIRs and concocted stories all efforts by Teesta Setalvad and others to bring out the truth behind the role of the chief minister in the violence."

Modi can never become PM, can sell tea: Aiyar

In remarks that are likely to stoke a controversy, Congress leader Manishankar Aiyar today mocked Narendra Modi’s Prime Ministerial ambitions and said a place will be identified for the Gujarat Chief Minister to distribute tea here.

“I promise you in 21st Century Narendra Modi will never become the Prime Minister of the country. …But if he wants to distribute tea here, we will find a place for him,” Aiyar said at the venue of the AICC meeting here.

Aiyar’s remarks comes against the backdrop of Modi’s reference to his own socio-economic background and humble origins at rallies while targeting the Gandhi-Nehru family.

Earlier Samajwadi Party leader Naresh Agarwal had also made similar remarks against Modi, saying that a person who used to sell tea cannot have a national perspective.

“Narendra Modi wants to become a PM. Someone rising from a tea shop can never have a national perspective. Like, if you make a ‘sipahi’ (constable) as ‘kaptan’ (Superintendent of Police), he can never have SP’s approach but will have that of a constable,” Agarwal had said in Hardoi in Uttar Pradesh.

Time sees Narendra Modi as 'America's Other India Problem'

Washington, Jan 18 (IANS) After the "nasty spat" between India and US over an Indian diplomat, the emergence of Narendra Modi, Bharatiya Janata Party's prime ministerial candidate, may cause even more tension between them, according to Time magazine.

"But don't expect the relationship to rebound quickly," Michael Crowley wrote suggesting "In fact, the atmosphere could soon become even more tense - over a far more prominent Indian also embroiled in a visa controversy."

"When Modi had no national profile, the restriction was inconsequential. But can Washington blacklist the leader of India?" he asked.

US policymakers are divided, he noted. "A resolution introduced in November in the US Congress calls on the State Department to continue denying Modi entry. It has attracted 43 congressional co-sponsors, including two Muslims."

"Should Modi win, the Obama Administration will be pressured by many at home and abroad to condemn his past and prevent him from visiting the US. But (President Barack) Obama has tended to subordinate principle to the national interest," he suggested.

Noting that "Over the years, the US has done business with plenty of unsavoury leaders, in countries far less friendly than India," Time said, "By revoking Modi's visa, the US government has made clear its view of him and the Gujarat rampage."
