Dawoodi Bohras in the media - 2015

The one and only free public forum for Bohras. The focus of this forum is the reform movement, the Dawoodi Bohra faith and, of course, the corrupt priesthood. But the discussion is in no way restricted to the Bohras alone.

Here is the article on her facebook
Amidst a fake atmosphere of Intolerance being created in India, in the last 1 month, I owe my version of what I, a Muslim lady, living and working in India feel like. This has been due from me since sometime. Now, I feel the water has gone above the head and I too need to share my views. So, here it is.

I am a Muslim lady, a practicing dermatologist by profession and I run my own high- end laser skin clinic, in Bangalore. I was brought up in Kuwait and at the age of 18, came to India to pursue medical education. I decided to stay back in India while almost all my friends left India for greener pastures. Not even once did I consider that being a Muslim could create a problem for me, as my sense of nationalism held me back to my roots and so here I am, serving my country since the last 20 years.

I studied in Manipal, Karnataka. I lived alone like all students do. While I was in college, all my professors were Hindus and almost all the people who I would interact with were Hindus as well. There is not a single incident when anyone showed partiality towards me based on my gender or religion. Every single one of them was kind and in fact sometimes, I felt as though they made an extra effort to make feel like I was one of them. I am ever so grateful to all of them for making my life in Manipal as comfortable as it could get.

After leaving Manipal, I relocated to Bangalore with my husband. By then I had been married and so we decided to make our life in Bangalore. There is a reason, why we chose Bangalore and here is where I will talk about my husband. He is a Muslim too, with a very typical first name, Iqbal. He is an aerospace engineer with MTech from IIT-Chennai and PhD from Germany. His profession takes him to the most highly secured organizations of India, like DRDO, NAL, HAL, GTRE, ISRO, IISc, BHEL; you name it and be assured that he has visited all of them without any hassles. Not even once he has been stripped off or asked for special security clearance or any such bias has been shown towards him. And NO, things have not changed even after Modi gov came into power. Things are in fact more disciplined and streamlined even at government organizations, from what I hear from my husband. As a matter of fact, Iqbal has been completely stripped each time he traveled to US and was under secret surveillance while he was doing his PhD in Germany, after the 9/11 attacks on US. We literally received a letter from the German government that he has been cleared and is not anymore under suspicion. Talk about Muslim paranoia! Its very understandable too due to the current situations in the world. My husband is highly respected and loved by the people he works with, and all of them happen to be Hindus. None of this has changed even in recent times, so Intolerance is just a word for us on a practical basis.

I opened my clinic last year, just before Modi gov came into power. I am a law-abiding citizen and I file my taxes like service tax on a monthly basis. I have never indulged in any activities, which could put me into any kind of trouble. I am comfortably running my clinic, which is doing very well, thanks to all my patients and clients, who all happen to be Hindus. A handful of my patients are from other communities. My entire staff is Hindu, and believe me when I say that they take better care of my clinic than I could any day! I interact with bankers, government officers and with so many people on a daily basis. Not even once in the last 20 years, did I have the need to even think of leaving India! My entire family lives abroad and all that I need to do is just decide that I don’t want to stay here. I have open offers of opening clinic in Kuwait, which would fetch me huge amount of revenue and yet why should I stay in India, if I am not happy and if I am facing any kind of bias?

In Kuwait, we are considered as NOBODY. Yes, despite being in Kuwait for the last 40 years or so, my family is still considered as expatriates, with no rights. We need to renew our resident permit periodically and the laws there constantly keep changing, making the life of expatriates only harder. We have to strictly comply with their rules and laws, which is fine but we are openly discriminated. They consider Asians as third grade people, while giving preference to their citizens, Arabs and Whites. We are not unhappy there but we have no sense of belonging either. At least, I never had and never have even when I visit Kuwait now. We are Muslims in a Muslim country, and yet we are considered as Indians with no special regards. I figured long back ago, that India is the only country, where I will have a sense of belonging. You are an Indian-American in US, Indian-Canadian in Canada, Indian-British in UK and so on but only in India you are an Indian. Period. Rest can say whatever they want and defend their choices but this is a fact. You can only feel at home, in your own home. I have lived in different places and everywhere I stand out but in India. No body in India asks me, ‘Are you an Indian?’, and this is what makes all the difference.
So, what are these celebrities ranting about? An ordinary citizen like my husband and I are not facing any such issues, then what have they faced? Why is Amir Khan’s wife, Kiran Rao feeling so afraid? They are prominent people, living in posh localities, their children study in the best of schools and they have personal security escorting them at all times. I travel alone everyday and yet don’t feel afraid. I want to know as a responsible citizen, from Amir Khan and Shahrukh Khan as well, why did they make such irresponsible statements and spoil the image of the 13 crores of Muslims in India? Who the hell are they to make public statements based on their personal perception? Who gave them the liberty to tarnish the image of my country on an International level, that Muslims are not safe in India? How dare Pakistan invites them to stay in Pakistan? I feel hurt when I read the statements of my Hindu friends on Muslims. I feel afraid that they are being pushed to the limit and the tolerance and acceptance that I have enjoyed all these years, might just vanish! I feel afraid that my own people might shun me and I may get alienated in my own country, because of a handful of ungrateful bunch of fools! How long can I expect majority of Hindus to tolerate this nuisance? It’s high time that Muslims understand the value of the freedom and acceptance that we enjoy in India and if not, I pray that my Hindu fellow citizens continue to keep their patience.

So she thinks that she and her husband represent the entire 13 crore muslim populace of india? If these two never suffered it means no one did? I mean seriously? Is she even worth quoting?

well even if she is not representing whole 13 crore, that was her personal experience, as the experience of aamir khan and his wife was also personal.
there may be many who has suffered discrimination, but the fact is that if we were to kicked out to pakistan, the fate would be even worse.
those who do not reside in india, has no business talking about them.

Aamir khan ad his wife were not talking about everyone leaving because of his experience. This dr is talking about everyone behaving because of her experience.

No one can kick anyone out without getting into a fight. Unless you are dealing with absolute cowards.

In order to elaborate on her own experience, this Dr. Sofia didn't need to draw extreme rhetoric and generalization over other people's experience. Does she not realize that perhaps a big chunk of her experience comes from being a product of privilege.

Her experiences are worth writing about, upto the point she doesn't admonish and minimize other people's experiences with prejudice. The very diversity of people's experiences gets lost in this "my experience of trauma/or lack thereof is more noteworthy than yours. "

Tolerance takes humility and compassion, in addition to courage for speaking out.

D-syndicate has finger in Mumbai’s Rs.4,000-crore redevelopment pie

The congested Bhendi Bazaar area of south Mumbai is witnessing India’s largest urban redevelopment programme, with crowded streets and dilapidated buildings giving way to a planned urban centre. The Rs.4,000-crore project, handpicked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a showcase smart city project in July 2015, will transform a chaotic and unplanned south Mumbai community into organised modern living and shopping destination.

The project, however, also captures how the Dawood Ibrahim gang continues to flourish in the city more than two decades after he carried out the 1993 serial blasts in the commercial capital and took refuge in Pakistan, according to numerous official documents and many sources accessed by The Hindu. In a detailed investigation, almost fully based on technical surveillance details from various agencies, The Hindu has concluded that the powerful criminal syndicate continues to play a crucial role in many segments of Mumbai’s economy, despite the Indian security establishment dedicating much resource and personnel to Indian state’s enemy No 1.

The intercepts show no connection or communication between the trustees of the Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust (SBUT), which oversees the project, and the underworld.

When contacted, an SBUT official said: “At the heart of the project are its people and upliftment of their lives. The trust is, therefore, extremely sensitive about its tenants and are engaging with them in a timely and efficient manner. Information centres are set up to educate the tenants on the project and handhold them at all stages,” the officials said.

He said the SBUT had already relocated 1,700 families and over 400 businesses to state-of-the-art transit accommodations or on rentals. “The project has not only gained tremendous trust and faith among its tenants, but also recognised by the government of India as a National Best Practice Project.”

Intercepts show how Dawood Ibrahim and several of his family members, as well as his key aide Chhota Shakeel, through their proxies, have major interests in the project. Unknown to SBUT officials, Dawood’s associates are involved in obtaining consent of residents of Bhendi Bazaar, deploying their goons to intimidate recalcitrant residents, executing some of the projects such as demolitions through proxies, and in recent years have been dedicating a significant part of their time to their activities surrounding the massive project in the heart of South Mumbai.

The SBUT official said: “Being a public trust, the project is being carried forward with complete professionalism, transparency and as per the applicable law. There is no question of the trust being associated with any anti-social elements. We categorically and vehemently deny the allegations.”

The project is to come up on over 16.5 acres between Mohammed Ali Road and Nagpada. It is close to Temkar Street, where Dawood grew up. It has a few thousands housing units, over 1,250 shops and offices, and 250 buildings. It is home to over 20,000 people. Once the project started in 2009, intelligence agencies have been receiving a stream of intercepts from Pakistan, the UAE and Mumbai, between key members of the Dawood gang, detailing how they are deeply involved in the project through various proxies.

“It has been clear for some time that the gang has deep interests in the project, and several of his associates are involved in it as proxies,” one source told The Hindu.

Tellingly, the rare reliable inputs of Dawood’s personal dealings also show his active interest in the project. His brother Iqbal Kaskar, brother-in-law Saud who is married to Dawood’s sister Farzana, and his sister Haseena Parkar’s son Alishah are all involved somehow in the project, the intercepts show. It is not clear, though, whether the involvement is with the officials involved in the project.

Cont form above

However, it is Chhota Shakeel, Dawood’s key aide, who seems to control the operation. A stream of inputs shows that Shakeel controls most of the activities mostly through the UAE, from where the D Company controls most of its Indian operations.

According to the intercepts, Shakeel is involved in the proposed demolition and redevelopment of the Musafir Khana building at 33, Pakmodia Street in Bhendi Bazaar, where Dawood and family once lived. He is also closely involved in the developments around Damarwala building, which is among the 11 properties of Dawood attached by the Income Tax Department in 2001. The I-T Department’s efforts to sell off the property have yet not succeeded, but intercepts show that the Dawood gang is actively involved in its possible demolition and redevelopment.

According to other inputs, two close relatives of Shakeel are closely involved in the project as proxies for the underworld operative. Through at least one of these proxies, the intercepts say, Shakeel has deployed several criminals to threaten shopkeepers and residents opposed to the project. In the intercepts, the gang actively discusses people signing up for the project, the need to maintain secrecy, and the need for local political support for the project.

The SBUT official told The Hindu that the trust was not aware of any relatives of the underworld gangsters working as part of the project. He also denied SBUT tenders and contracts thus far given have been awarded to any underworld proxies. “We have just started the piling work in a small section of the project but that too has been given to a small-time contractor.”

In February 2014, according to the intercepts, Chhota Shakeel and his associates were discussing ways to deal with a person in a property with 215 occupants, who was preventing others from giving their consent for the property’s procurement. In the same month, Shakeel is informed by one of his UAE associates that they are sending their boys to Bohri Mohalla and other localities of Bhendi Bazaar and Chakala in Andheri to threaten occupants in different addresses and telling them to talk to “bhai”.

The details in The Hindu investigation are in contrast to the seeming silence of the local residents of Bhendi Bazaar and local officials on the possible involvement of the underworld in the prestigious project.

There is no police case filed against the underworld gang for intimidation or other criminal efforts to support the project, senior Mumbai police officials told The Hindu. “We did get tip-offs about such harassment a short while ago and approached the people concerned, but they said they did not want to involve the police, and would rather let the SBUT deal with the matter,” said a senior Mumbai Police officer.

A Mumbai Police Crime Branch officer confirmed that they have been receiving ground-level intelligence indicating “a very strong possibility” of Dawood’s involvement. He said they were tracking the involvement of one ‘Salim Fruit,’ a relative of Shakeel who is said to be key middlemen in various deals in the project area.

Reformist Bohras face social boycott in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: At the outset, the Dawoodi Bohra community in the city is vibrant. Its members are predisposed to business; the thousands of large and small hardware and glass stores dotting the city bear testimony to the fact that the largely mercantile community is thriving. The tasteful gold-embroidered skull caps and spotless flowing white saya, which men sport, and the women's rida, a variant of the burqa, are unique. But while all seems bright and beautiful, a small but dedicated group of ex-Dawoodi Bohras insists that the community is in the stranglehold of the top leadership.

Identifying themselves as reformists, many of the 70-odd families say that they are victims of an unofficial social boycott. The reason behind it is that they questioned various religious and administrative practices within the community.

Ali Asghar is one such reformist. It all began when Asghar's family was questioned after they closed their departmental store in Pathergatti for a day after a Bohra, who had left the fold, a patriarch of Haji Qurban Hussain family, died. "It was a mark of respect. The upset leadership reprimanded us for expressing solidarity with an 'outsider'," Asghar said.

But the worst was yet to come. The issue of raza, or permission, from the aamil, a local regent of the Dai al Mutlaq, the spiritual head of Bohras, came up when Asghar's father died around 20 years ago. "It took us more than 12 hours to get permission to touch the body because the then aamil was busy," he recalled.

What later ensued was a "whisper campaign" that sought to exclude Asghar and his ilk. "I was informed of my mother's death four days after she passed away. None of my relatives wanted anything to do with me," he said.

For others, the problem began when they questioned the opacity in funds transfer. Like the Sunni denomination, the Bohras too pay zakat. Businessman Sulaiman Ali (name changed) said the whisper campaign against him began once he questioned how the funds were being used. "Opacity is the norm. The local aamil told us that questioning was a sign of weak faith," Ali said.

The claims are not surprising. It was around 35 years ago in Gujarat that the Nathwani Commission was constituted to probe instances of excesses by the leadership. Another reformist, requesting anonymity, said, "The ripple effect of such practices is still being felt. There is a dire need for reforms."

The registered reformist organization in the city, AP Dawoodi Bohra Jamaat, is similar to renowned scholar late Asghar Ali Engineer's movement. Prominent businessman Iftekhar Hussain, its president says, "There are around 150 families in Hyderabad and abroad who are a part of this. There was a time when I protested against Engineer. But now, we are inspired by him. We are not saying that the Syedna is right or wrong. We only wanted transparency. We are concerned that in a beautiful community in which dowry doesn't exist, such practices are prevalent," he said.

Claims have also surfaced that access cards have been issued to mainstream Bohras so as to monitor their movements. "There was a recent 'furman' from the top that Bohras earmark 10 days of mourning in Moharram without fail. It was seen that some were not coming and therefore cards were issued. No action is being taken for those who don't come," an insider claimed.

When contacted, aamil Shaik Haider said, "Raza is a Quranic concept. We have nothing to do with zakat funds as they are dealt with in the Mumbai headquarters."

I AM IMPRESSED!

The attached video, in Kiswahili (the local language in East Africa), was aired on a TV station in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. The newly elected President has shown strong leadership by kicking out corrupt officials, eradicating nepotism, and has urged public to undertake self-help projects. Taking up the challenge Burhani Foundation members are cleaning up garbage from streets, repairing, grading and resurfacing roads, etc.

I congratulate Burhani Foundation members and suggest they next drive out corrupt Jamaat officials, evict Kothar's henchmen and say 'no' to increasing number and amounts of sabeel, wajebaat, zakaat, najwa, etc.

Indian women who are fighting to stop genital mutilation

Female genital mutilation has been a well-kept secret in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, where it's practiced by the Dawoodi Bohra community
The cruel practice of female genital mutilation is banned in many countries globally, but it remains widespread among the Bohras - a small Muslim community in India. Now, some Bohra women have started a campaign demanding an end to the ritual, writes the BBC's Geeta Pandey in Delhi.
When Masooma Ranalvi was seven years old, her grandmother took her out promising to buy her an ice-cream and some candies.
"I was very excited so I went along happily with her," she told me.
"When she took me to a decrepit old building, I started to wonder what kind of an ice-cream parlour it was. Then she took me to a room, made me lie down on a rug on the floor and pulled my pants down.

Masooma Ranalvi was seven when she underwent female genital mutilation
"She held my hands and another woman held my legs. And then they cut something from my vagina. I shouted in pain and started to cry. They put some black powder there, pulled my pants up and my grandmother took me home.

That was nearly 40 years ago, but Ms Ranalvi says she is still to get over the trauma of what happened.
So earlier this month, she and some other Bohra women began a change.org petition calling on the government to ban female genital mutilation (FMG).
Sometimes called female circumcision, FGM refers to procedures including the partial or total removal of external female genital organs for non-medical reasons, often without anaesthesia.
An earlier petition to the Bohra high priest to ban FGM was ignored
The practice, Ms Ranalvi says, is "steeped in patriarchy" and the idea behind it is the belief that "female sexuality is destructive to patriarchal order and that a woman has no right to enjoy sex and that a woman who has undergone FMG will be more faithful to her husband and not stray".
"The sole purpose is to curb a woman's sexual desire and make sex less pleasurable for her," she adds.
FGM has been widespread in many parts of Africa and the Middle East for centuries, but has been a particularly well-kept secret in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, where it's practiced by the Dawoodi Bohra community. FGM is also practiced widely in Indonesia.
A Shia sect from Yemen, the Bohras arrived in India in the 16th Century. Today they are found mostly in Gujarat and Maharashtra.
The community, with a population of over a million, is fairly prosperous and the Dawoodi Bohras are among the most educated in the country, but they remain the only one to practice FGM.
In December 2012, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution vowing to eliminate FGM and across the world, many countries banned it.

Many Kenyan Maasai women support FMG and have opposed the ban on the practice currently in place in the country
But in India, no such law exists and the Bohras continue to practice FGM - known locally as khatna or female circumcision.
"FGM has mostly been spoken about in whispers, up until now," Preethi Herman, country head of Change.org in India, told the BBC.
"For the first time in India, a group of women, survivors of FGM themselves, have spoken out. The message is loud and clear - FGM needs to be banned," she added.
Art historian Habiba Insaf, a member of the community and a signatory to the petition, says: "The practice is not sanctioned by Koran. If it was, then all Muslims in India would practice it. It continues in our community because no-one questions it."
End FGM posterImage copyrightMasooma Ranalvi

The Bohra women in India are fighting to end the cruel practice of FGM
FGM, she says, can have long-term harmful effects - it can cause psychological and sexual damage.
"Also, since it's not done by clinically-trained people, so often there are complications. I've heard about women who have bled to death after undergoing FGM," Ms Insaf says.
A few years ago, a similar petition was started by a Bohra woman - who refused to reveal her identity - urging the Bohra high priest Syedna Mohammad Burhanuddin to ban FGM.
That petition, Ms Ranalvi says, was "consigned to the dustbin" - a spokesman for Syedna advised that "Bohra women should understand that our religion advocates the procedure and they should follow it without any argument".
It's an advice the petitioners are not willing to take and that's why, this time, they have approached the Indian government to intervene.
"It's a form of abuse. And it must stop," says Ms Insaf.

STOP FIGHTING AND THINK OF THE KIDS: HC TO SYEDNA’S FAMILY
By Sunil Baghel, Mumbai Mirror | Dec 27, 2015, 12.13 AM ISTSyedna's son and nephew retain physical custody, while the mothers have been granted limited access.

The Bombay High Court has asked the families of the Syedna to set aside their bitter succession battle and consider the interests of the children caught in the crosshairs for a change.

"Succession seemed to be the paramount issue for the parties," observed Justice MS Sonak in an order passed last week, while ruling in the custody case of the Syedna's grandchildren. Two families have been split right down the middle because of the acrimony between the current Syedna, Mufaddal Saifuddin and his uncle, Khuzaima Qutbuddin. While Syedna Saifuddin is the paternal grandfather of the children, the claimant to the position, Qutbuddin, is their maternal grandfather.

"There is emergent necessity to distinguish between the disputes to the position of Dai-ul-Mutlaq and the welfare of the children. The linkage of the two issues, is obviously not in the interests of the children. Whatever the unfortunate past, at least for the future, neither of the parents should even attempt to use the children as pawns upon the Chess Board they have chosen to spread out for themselves," said Justice Sonak in his order.

One of Qutbuddin's daughters is married to Syedna Saifuddin's son and the other to his nephew, who also supports Saifuddin. Nine children aged between 17 and 7 are embroiled in the case. "The rift has virtually split the marital ties between the parties, as the wives have aligned with Qutbuddin and the husbands have aligned with Saifuddin. The rift has split the Dawoodi Bohra Community, as well. In this mega rift, reminiscent of the strife for the Mogul Throne however, the children, all of them, find themselves in a predicament of having to choose between either of their parents, their tender and innocent age, notwithstanding," the order observes.

It also said the children need the love of both parents, together if possible and if not, then separately. Though the order is strongly worded, the fathers retain physical custody of the children, and the HC has granted very limited access to the mothers from 10 am to 5 pm, on only four days till March 31 of next year - December 25 and 31, and two others to be mutually decided. Counsellors have been asked to submit their report to the Bandra Family Court a week after the access, and the court has been directed to decide the case after the last visit.

The problems began immediately after the death of 52nd Syedna in January last year, as both the sides had foreseen a succession battle. The mothers immediately fled with the children to the USA and filed a custody case there. They virtually lost, when in February this year the court granted joint custody, with physical custody of all the kids to their fathers, and a clause for regular access to the mothers, observing that it was not the "home state" for the parties.

After returning to India, the Bandra Family Court was approached. The mothers pled that the fathers were not following the US order and that they had no access to their children. The family court said it would wait for Counsellors' report before granting any kind of custody. The mothers challenged this in the HC.

The HC granted access to the mothers and a report by four Counsellors was submitted to the HC. The judge also met the children in his chambers and observed that there was some resistance among the "older children" toward their mothers, however, they weren't completely hostile towards them, and that the "younger kids" were more receptive to the idea of access to their mothers.

HC seems to be even more stupid than the two conmen fighting over the spoils of the community. Shouldnt they advise these two to think about the entire community instead of just their children? After all the dais are supposed to be the fathers and mothers of the abdes no?

woh toh sach baat hain jaisi karni waisi bharni...

many died without seeing their loved one, many marriages broke, many children could not get love of their mother or father in this baraat system, now every thing is coming back on them.

THE Dawoodi Bohra brothers and sisters Please note:-

1. You pay a high price to get Nikah performed by "Syedna" as you think that the Nikah performed at the hands of "Syedna will ensure stability, peace and happiness in the future life of the married couple. But at the Nikah performed at the hands of late muqaddas Syedna Burhanuddin Saheb of his grand sons with the daughters of his Mazun-e-Dawat, both considered as blessed and divine souls!

2. Only Dais up to Syedna Taher Saifuddin Saheb married with ordinary Bohras outside their Royal family as their was no Royal families then. But once Syedna Taher Saifuddin established his financial empire with huge concentration of wealth, all marriages were took placed between the members of the same Royal family in order to the wealth and power in one family.

3. Is it not a shame that a court tells the contenders of 53rrd Dai post, to "Stop fighting and think of their kids". How can such leaders of the community care for the welfare of the community members whome they call their "spiritual children"?
