Man who carried wife's body receives Rs 8.87 lakh from King of Bahrain

Dhan Manjhi from Odisha, drew worldwide sympathy when he was forced to carry his wife's body wrapped in sheets and on shoulder for 13km after he was denied a ambulance.

Manjhi's 42-year-old wife died last month from tuberculosis but hospital staff insisted that he move the body and that he couldn't afford a private ambulance, so he resorted to carrying her body himself. Majhi was filmed as he headed towards his home from the hospital in Bhawanipatna town, Odisha.

The widower was once again in the media limelight on Thursday after he received a cheque of Rs 8.87 lakh donated by the King of Bahrain Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. Manjhi collected the cheque from the Embassy of Bahrain.

Earlier in the day, he visited the Kalinga Institute of Social Studies, a residential school for tribal children in Bhubaneswar, to enrol his three daughters, Chandni (13), Sonei (7) and Pramila (4).

"The institute founder, Dr Achyuta Samanta, told me they had arranged my travel to meet the representatives of Bahrain," Manjhi told the press at Ashoka Hotel.

Dressed in an old shirt, a blue lungi and a gamcha, Manjhi answered questions through his interpreter, one Kaduy Soren. Displaying a blue cheque of Bank of Bahrain and Kuwait of Rs 8, 87, 949, Manjhi said he would put the money in fixed deposit for the education of his girls.

Manjhi said he received monetary assistance from several quarters: Rs 10,000 each from two Odisha MLAs, Rs 14,000 from a private organisation, and Rs 30,000 and the assurance of a house from the local BDO and collector.
