After Memon's hanging, will Modi govt. tighten noose around saffron terror accused? Don't hope, say people

Even though Mumbai blast terror accused Yakub Memon was hanged 30th July morning on Supreme Court order amidst sharp legal and moral debates over his case in the national and international media, not many think that his hanging will force the central government of BJP led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to tighten the terror blast cases wherein Hindutva activists have been found involved in last 10 years and are behind bars. If some had positive answer to the question above, they would be rethinking now after Home Minister Rajnath Singh's statement today that the term Hindu terror coined by previous Congress government weakened the fight against terror by diverting the direction of probe into the incidents of terrorism.

"Exemplary urgency and commitment has been shown by Govt and Judiciary in punishing an accused (Yakub Memon) of Terror. I hope similar commitment of Govt and Judiciary would be shown in all cases of Terror irrespective of their Caste Creed and Religion," said Congress leader Digvijay Singh soon after Memon's hanging Thursday.

But he expressed doubt if the government would do so. "I have my doubts the way the cases of other Terror accused are being conducted. Let's see. Credibility of the Govt and Judiciary is at stake," said Singh.

He is not alone; many people share his doubt.

"The bitter truth is that the present Govt (of BJP) is openly protecting terrorists of a saffron hue. Rohini Salian (Public prosecutor in Malegaon terror blast case) has made that clear, as has BJP's act of making Randhir Singh an Minister in Jharkhand for becoming a hostile witness in the Ajmer blasts case, and the lost file in the J&K mosque attack case," Kavita Krishnan, eminent human rights and social activist, told IndiaTomorrow.net.

Mansi Sharma, another social activist said. "No. Nothing will change post Menon hanging. This is the 3rd hanging in last 4 years. Has anything changed since then?"

"Rather we are seeing that in the Malegaon, Mecca Masjid and Malegaon blasts cases witnesses are turning hostile everyday and State trying to weaken the cases (Read Rohini Salian's Statement)."

Mansi apprehends that all saffron terror accused will be released one day.

"Rather the day is not far when all these accused will come out which is very much happening in Gujarat where accused Police officers in Ishrat Jahan, Sohrabuddin encounters are not only out from jail but are reinstated in their respective services," she said.

There should be only one law for all terrorists

KCV Georgie, a writer and political commentator, told IndiaTomorrow.net: "I don't think so. Rohini Salian, special public prosecutor in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, said that, soon after the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government came to power last year, she was instructed by the National Investigation Agency to "go soft" on Hindu extremists accused in the case. What happened to Maya Kodnani, who was sentenced to 28 years in jail for murder during the 2002 riots, she managed to get bail and no more in the jail"

"As Sitaram Yechury said terror had no religion, "Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by a Hindu fanatic, Indira Gandhi was shot dead by a Sikh fanatic and and Rajiv Gandhi by the LTTE. So terrorism is not confined to one religion or region."

Georgie says "there should be only one law for all of them".

Dr Zafarul-Islam Khan, President, All India Muslim Majlis-e Mushawarat, is also not hopeful.

"Not at all. All this is going on in accordance with a well-thought-out plan. While saffron terrorists are getting bail one after the other and are expecting acquittal soon due to the retraction of almost all witnesses, and while killers in uniform who committed 21 documented fake encounters in Gujarat are almost all out and many of them are actually back in their previous jobs and while killers, rapists and arsonists of Gujarat 2002 are almost all out including such criminals as Babu Bajrangi whom even one thousand hanging will not suffice, what justice could be expected under Modi?" asked Dr. Khan.

"On the other, we see that a person (Yakub Memon) who surrendered on his own, who did not take any actual part in the Bombay bombings and who was implicated on the basis of a confession by another accused who later retracted it, has been joyfully hanged while those thousands of policemen and Shiv Sainkik goons who burnt, killed, and maimed at will during December 1992 and January 1993 Bombay riots are roaming free," he told IndiaTomorrow.net.

Modi govt. won't upset RSS

Asad Ashraf, journalist and activist says: "There are large scale prejudices and biases against a particular community and that is also reflected in these orders. On the contrary what we have seen is that people like Maya Kodnnani, Babu Bajrangi and DG Vanzara are all out on bail, the public prosecutor in Pune is alleging that this government is asking her to go soft on Hindutva terrorists. All this cannot be coincidental and definitely points out at a Modus operandi of this government in dealing with such cases."

Ashraf says that Modi government won't upset RSS with whose support it has come to power.

"This government has thorough backing of RSS and it wouldn't do anything that upsets RSS. And hence expecting them to be harsh on saffron terrorists would be being too optimistic and hopeful...," he said.

It is in national interest to treat all terror cases with same commitment

A research scholar from Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi says: "When the government on one hand instructs public prosecutors to go soft on terrorists who happen to be from majority community and on the other hand comes down hard on terrorists who happen to be from a minority community, the state puts itself at risk of being accused of having double standards, of being partial and prejudiced."

"It is in the interest of the state and the nation, to pursue all terror cases, irrespective of caste, class, or religion, with the same vigor and commitment as shown in the case of Yaqub Memon," he said.

Navaid Hamid, former Member of National Integration Council says that in the name of fighting against terror, the government has been demonizing a particular community.

"In recent past, India wish to be in list of those countries who had a wishful thinking of following policy of state repression and managed executions instead of addressing the core issues politically, to selectively erase temptation for home grown terrorism and to demonising a 'particular' community in name of addressing terror activities," said Hamid.

CAG finds Rs 25,000 crore of 'disputed transactions' in Modi's Gujarat

Notwithstanding the tall development and financial management claims of the state, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG)'s five audit reports on the last leg of Narendra Modi's rule as the Gujarat Chief Minister have fished out disputed transactions worth Rs 25,000 crore, which point to fiscal profligacy and a rising debt burden.

Among several other things, the CAG has questioned the Gujarat government's claim of a Rs 5,570 crore revenue surplus during 2012-13 and described it as overstated.

Mounting debt

Similarly, the auditing watchdog points out that the State's fiscal liability (or debt burden) which was around Rs 50,000 crore during the BJP-ruled Keshubhai Patel regime rose astronomically after the Narendra Modi government took charge.

"It rose to Rs 1.05 lakh crore in 2008-2009 and is Rs 1.66 lakh crore in 2012-13," according to the CAG.

The auditor warns that increasing fiscal liabilities may lead to an unsustainable debt in the medium to long term
.

Even after being pointed out, it (government) accepted only 2.93 per cent of the observation and made a recovery of only 0.17 per cent.

The state government's big claims of magical turnaround of public sector undertakings have also come under the scanner of the CAG that has pointed to losses of a whopping Rs 4,892 crore.

"It was controllable," rues the CAG.

BJP the Hindu nationalist party of Indian prime minister has been advocating reconverting people back to Hindu religion. Extremist groups see that as a mandate to burn churches and attack Muslims.

The attached BBC report is troubling.

11 reasons why the ghost of Ehsan Jafri still haunts Modi

The Gujarat High Court began hearing a petition against the 'clean chit' given to Narendra Modi and several others by the Supreme Court-appointed SIT on 4 August.

This is the last criminal case related to the 2002 carnage in which the then-Chief Minister of Gujarat and the present Prime Minister of the country has been made an accused.

The hearing is a result of a 'criminal revision application' filed by Zakia Jafri, widow of Ehsan Jafri, who was murdered by a Hindu mob during the riots. Jafri is being given legal aid by activist Teesta Setalvad and her organisation Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP).

The court's decision to hear the plea made by Zakia Jafri, against all odds, gives the prosecution an opportunity to press for a fresh inquiry and prosecute Modi and 58 others in connection with the spate of communal violence.

The case may cause huge embarrassment to Modi, senior bureaucrats and BJP functionaries if the High Court considers the evidence submitted by Jafri credible enough to begin a trial.

However if the court rejects Jafri's plea, Modi, BJP president Amit Shah and others may at last be able to put the ghosts of the 2002 violence behind them forever, at least till the petitioners appeal against the rejection in the Supreme Court.

Jafri's legal team has built the case by revisiting the SIT's reports filed in 2010 and 2012, and from messages collected from the State Intelligence Bureau, phone call records, Police Control Room records and various testimonies given to the SIT.

Catch has copies of the 2010 report and the 2012 closure reports filed by the SIT, based on which, Jafri and CJP are attempting to get prosecution proceedings launched against Modi and the others.

Interestingly there are disparities between what the SIT noted in its report of 2010 and the closure report of 2012. The 2012 report exonerates most of the people against whom it raised suspicions in 2010.

If the court does decide to take another look at the 2010 report, here are 11 reasons Modi and the others may stand on shaky ground.

01 The infamous action-reaction statement

In an interview given to Zee after the riots, Modi quoted Newton's third law of motion in the context of the pogrom against Muslims in Gujarat.

Many interpreted it as justification for the Hindu backlash to the alleged instigation by Muslims in the form of setting fire to a railway coach carrying Hindu karsevaks in Godhra.

On page 69 of its report filed to the Supreme Court in 2010, the SIT notes, "The chief minister had tried to water down the seriousness of the situation at Gulberg Society, Naroda Patiya and other places by saying that every action has an equal and opposite reaction."

02 Allegations of discriminatory attitude

There was an allegation against Modi of showing a clear bias by not visiting sites from where large-scale violence against Muslims had been reported.

On page 67, the SIT comments that Modi displayed a "discriminatory attitude by not visiting the riot-affected areas in Ahmedabad, where a large number of Muslims were killed, though he went to Godhra on the same day, travelling almost 300 km on a single day."

The SIT chairman, RK Raghavan, on page 8, also notes that "Modi did not cite any specific reasons why he did not visit the affected areas in Ahmedabad city as promptly as he did in the case of the Godhra train carnage."

03 Speeches post the riots

Members of the SIT, in their 2010 report, raised their eyebrows at some of the speeches or turns of phrase used by Modi after the riots, particularly in his Gaurav Yatra speech at Becharaji, Mehsana, on 9 September 2002.

In his speech, Modi was reported to have made several controversial remarks about a community.

On page 13 of the report, Raghavan says about Modi's statements: "Accusing some elements in Godhra and the neighbourhood as possessing a criminal tendency was sweeping and offensive, coming as it did from a chief minister, that too at a critical time when Hindu-Muslim tempers were running high."

04 The bandhs

On 28 February 2002, a day after the attack on the Sabarmati Express at Godhra, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) called for a statewide bandh. The bandh crippled the state and made it tougher for Muslims to escape the massacre. On that day, the horrific massacres at Naroda Patiya and Gulberg Society took place.

Another bandh was called for on 1 March, when massacres at Randhikpur-Sanjeli, Sardarpura, Sesan, Odh, Pandharwada and Kidiad, among others, took place

On page 69 of the report, the SIT writes, "Shri Vijay Badekha, Under Secretary to Home Department has stated before the SIT that both Gujarat bandh on 28-02-2002 and Bharat bandh on 01-03-2002, were supported by the BJP.

"He added that keeping in view the Fundamental Rights of the Citizens of India, the bandhs were not banned by the Govt."

05 No action against hate speeches

Despite detailed recommendations of strict action submitted to Modi by field officers of the State Intelligence Bureau, no action was taken against several regional publications that allegedly carried incendiary articles, urging people to come out with arms and fight.

The report, on page 79 notes, "During the course of enquiries by SIT, Govt. of Gujarat has intimated in writing that no action had been taken on the recommendations of Shri R.B. Sreekumar against print media. This allegation, therefore, stands established."

06 Destruction of crucial records

In the aftermath of the carnage, the Modi government was alleged to have destroyed several records and delayed the findings of the SIT and not cooperated with the investigations.

The SIT notes that many did not cooperate with the agency and many did not want to come in conflict with the politicians in power and incur 'their wrath, which affected their frank response'.

On page 13, the report states: "The police wireless messages for the year 2002 were not made available by the Govt of Gujarat as the same had been reportedly destroyed...No record/documentation/minutes of the crucial law & order meetings held by Govt. during the riots had been kept...Some of the public servants who had retired long time back, claimed loss of memory as they did not want to get involved in any controversy..."

07 Fate of Godhra dead bodies

The SIT deals with the issue of dead bodies of the Godhra train incident, which were handed over to one Jaideep Patel of the VHP. The bodies were later paraded through several districts, allegedly to inflame communal hatred.

Between pages 19 to 23, the SIT says: "SIT inquiry revealed that there was in fact a discussion at Godhra on the final disposal of bodies of those killed in the Godhra carnage. This was during chief minister Narendra Modi's visit to the town on the afternoon of 27 February 2002.

"It was held at the Collectorate. It is not clear who all were present or consulted. Apart from the district collector, the presence at least of Gordhan Zadaphiya (MoS, home) and Jaideep Patel, VHP activist, has been confirmed."

08 Negligence of top cops

It was alleged that senior policemen did not follow the call of duty, and that simply exercising their control over their respective jurisdictions could have saved many lives.

The allegations are particularly levelled at the then Joint Commissioner of Police, MK Tandon, and his junior, Deputy Commissioner of Police PK Gondia.

"[The] situation was alarming at Gulberg Society as well as Naroda Patiya...It would have been irresponsible on his [Tandon's] part to move out of Naroda Patiya. Sr. PI (Inspector of Police) ...sent alarming messages ...which were duly received by him [Tandon]...but no action was taken.

"The defence [for not responding to distress calls from Gulberg Society] put forward by Shri MK Tandon is far from satisfactory....the explanation...for his absence..despite distress messages...is totally unconvincing and will not cut any ground."
(Pages 48-49)

09 Prejudiced inquiry by cops

There were allegations that the police was heavily prejudiced towards one community and did not carry out a fair probe after the riots.

"Shri Rahul Sharma [then DCP, Control Room] has stated before the SIT that he had information about the use of mobile phones in a big way in the alleged organising of communal riots throughout the state including Ahmedabad City."

However, Sharma's colleagues did not respond to his efforts to use mobile phone records as evidence.

The report says, "This appears to be an intentional lapse on the part of Shri Tarun Barot, the then PI (Inspector of Police) and now ACP, SOG, Ahmedabad and Shri GL Singhal, the then ACP, Crime Branch and now SP, ATS, Ahmedabad and the same deserves to be dealt with major penalty departmental proceedings against them."

10 Questionable transfer of police officers

Allegations were levelled against the Modi government for giving plum posts to some and punishment postings to others, based on their reaction to the violence of 2002.

In this context, the SIT notes, "It is true that there were a few such transfers which were in fact questionable, especially because they came immediately after incidents in which the officers concerned had known to have antagonised ruling party men. Neither police officer would however admit he had been victimised." (from pages 32-36 and 8)

11 Govt misled Election Commission

The Gujarat government was accused of hurriedly calling elections right after the riots, to cash in on the polarised majority Hindu vote bank.

The ruling BJP government dissolved the Assembly on 19 August 2002, nine months before the expiry of the five-year term, and demanded an early election
.

The SIT also notes irritation on the part of the then Chief Election Commissioner, JM Lyngdoh, for being misled by Gujarat government.

Gujarat government had proposed to share two presentation to convince election commission on how peaceful situation was in the state.

The SIT on page 79 notes, 'Chief Election Commissioner said that they were not interested in any presentation, as the ground situation was different from the items presented earlier to a team sent by the Election Commission.'

Page 80 has a quote from Lyngdoh, "Mr Chief Secretary you have temerity to claim normalcy but everywhere we got complaints of threat from criminal elements voiced by the victims of riots."

BJP workers held for 'posing' as census officials in Muslim areas

Five BJP women's wing activists were arrested by the police in a Muslim dominated area of Bengaluru on Wednesday evening after locals accused them of trying to steal their voter ID cards.

"The men asked the women for their ID cards and there was confusion. After a few minutes, the women started crying and confessed that they were BJP workers,"

The BJP women took down names and phone numbers in cases where people refused to part with their voter cards

R Khaleemullah, from the Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR), who visited the spot, said, "Names of Muslims, other minorities and SCs had gone missing from the electoral rolls during the last Assembly and Lok Sabha polls as well."

Many groups had alleged then that the BJP was paying people to part with their voters cards. "This is the first time we have caught them red handed," he said.

We boast about Modi's barbarianism all the time. But has somebody noticed what muslims are doing elsewhere. Look at this ->

http://www.ecumenicalnews.com/article/p ... kiln-29863

and this ->

http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/featur ... 83718.html

Also, Boko Haram in Nigeria, Al Shabaab in Somalia, ISIS in Syria-Iraq etc. They kill far greater number of people.

Muslims in India are relatively safe and are safely practicing their religion. Muslims themselves are to be blamed for their deplorable conditions today. They refuse to join the mainstream. They want to follow regressive Deobandi Ulemas. They refuse to get educated in proper schools and reproduce like anything. When the kids (7-8 or more in each household) don't get proper upbringing and education, they are left to do blue collar jobs. Many unemployed youths go the anti social way leading to a vicious cycle of hardships and misery. Muslims hoist green color flag (Looking similar to Pak flag) in their areas. Muslims happily follow laws of the land in western countries but oppose any move to bring Uniform Civil code in India. Muslims are easily getting easily influenced by thugs like Akbaruddin Owaisi! All this is easily taken advantage off by vested interests to further their propaganda and the common muslim public is caught in the vicious cycle

One killed while making bombs at BJP leader house in West Bengal

Surprisingly no leading media highlighted this explosion in West Bengal, Even National Investigating Agency (NIA) has not responded about this blast.

Kolkata: One man killed and another was seriously injured as a result of a heavy explosion at an apartment owned by a BJP leader in the Dumdum airport area of Kolkata on the Independence Day. Police have arrested the apartment owner Manik Das Baidya along with his two sons. Baidya has twice contested the municipal election on BJP ticket.

The intensity of the blast collapsed the wall and damaged parts of a room.

The explosion took place not far from the Kolkata Airport, from where Hajj tour of West Bengal pilgrims started on August 16th.

Beside this blast, on Friday Kolkata police recovered 22 bag raw materials of explosives from a Godown at Barabazar area including 500 kg Sulphur, 600 kg Ammonium Nitrate etc., according to a CID officer of Kolkata Police.

“It is the suitable time to ask the state BJP leader that, why there is a bomb-making factory in a BJP leader’s house?”

"This blast is similar in nature to Khagragarh. So, why no NIA investigation in this blast?"

“NIA should immediately take up the investigation as it may be part of a bigger conspiracy to make communal disturbance in the state.”

Bro dawedaar,

Firstly, "Two wrongs do not make one Right" and secondly there is a vast difference between fringe terrorist groups operating in some countries as compared to a state leader who now unfortunately happens to be the Prime Minister of our country who is alleged to have masterminded the Gujarat 2002 Mass Genocide and there are innumerable reports from various national and international agencies to establish his complicity in the matter. It is very easy to say "Forgive and Forget" and "Move ahead" but ask the same question to families of those innocent Muslims who were mercilessly hacked to death, burnt alive, their womenfolk gangraped and trishuls inserted in their private parts and their lifelong savings and assets reduced to ashes. They now live in relief camps run by NGOs and Muslim charitable trusts with NO HELP OR SUPPORT from the Hindutva government and to top it all...... Narendra Modi has NEVER apologised for the carnage nor has he EVER VISITED the relief camps where orphans and lakhs of Muslims are languishing.

Hence, please don't get carried away by the biased media and newspaper reports which are contrary to the truth.

@GM bhai: I very well understand the anguish and the tragedy that people went through during Gujarat riots. It boils my blood when I think of it even though none of my relatives were involved. I also accept the complicity of Modi in the rioting. However, what even Congress did in the past 60+ years for the muslims? Though Modi had support from Indians pre election but that support was also fueled by Anti Congress-UPA sentiment across all sections of Indians due to their mis rule during their last 2 terms that saw lot of scams. Indians have hope in Modi (Irrespecitve of his rioting complicity) and even certain section of Muslims frustrated from Congress have or had shown support for Modi. Yes, if Muslims had developed under 60+ years of Congress rule who were secular, where is the development. Majority muslims in India still are backwards. Congress got enough chances but they failed miserably. Let's see if Modi can prove anything.

Congress' mis rule and Corruption is no less than an atrocity. Lakhs of Indians (including muslims) have died due to malnutrition, non availability of healthcare, (accidents) lack of infrastructure and transportation safety etc over the years due to corruption in the government and its indifference and inability. We never take those deaths into account. We only and always see those few hundred lives lost in Gujarat (Not to degrade any of the victims but just to put things into perspective). So many people (Figure could be in lakhs/crores) including muslims in India have died over the years even under Congress rule due to malnutrition, lack of proper health facilities, lack of safety in transportation (rail and road accidents due to lack of proper safety measures and adequate infrastructure). Due to corruption over the years, money meant for projects is eaten by the ministers and middlemen. And I don't think BJP is ruling India since Independence

Bro dawedaar,

In principle, I agree to all what you say and to give a clean chit to congress is also foolish. Politicians of every party are birds of the same feather, their only aim is wealth and power, to hell with the nation !! However Modi's case is different from Congress because Gujarat riots were "State sponsored" unlike the riots that took place in congress rule and there are enough evidences to prove the same. The major problem with Modi is that he is definitely a FEKU as he only talks big rather then deliver goods, he is no less corrupt (Adani group is a prime example). The other worrying factor are the fringe elements of Saffron brigade who are given a free hand, they are not reprimanded by Modi which again proves Modi's complicity. The ghar wapsi, the haraamzaade quotes, vandalising churches, riots in U.P. and other states are other examples. The fast increase of RSS shakhas under Modi rule, the bails of murderers like Maya Kodnani and Babu Bajrangi, the release of police officers implicated in fake encounters and their consequent reinstatements in police force, hounding of activist Teesta Setalvad who played a major role in getting some justice for the riot victims are other examples. I can go on and on !!

There is definitely an urgent need for Muslims to wake up and face the ground realities ! Albeit slowly but they have realised the importance of education and the rapid change in their mindset is evident from their progress in the last 10 years (I can provide the data). Muslim girls are toppers in various field of academics, something which was absent in the past. Even then, they face discrimination in jobs, housing, bank loans etc. So you see, things have not changed for the better, in fact they have gone worse !!

Yes, but always playing the victim card and the oppressed community is not helping the muslims either! Playing victims only help those politicians and parties like Samajwadi Party's Mulayam Singh, Abu Azmi, Azam Khan, and then there is Lalu Yadav, Akbaruddin Owaisi etc. These entities act to show off that they care for the muslims but their only interest is Muslim votes by emotionally acting like they sympathize with the muslim community and they are also interested in their welfare and justice. The riots and other muslim issues have been turned into political issues rather than humanitarian ones. Just as the BJP used Ayodhya's Ram Temple issue to come to limelight and power on national stage. Its been almost 25 years since Babri demolition but now No 1 cares about Ram temple apart from the far right Hindu groups.

AHMEDABAD: Suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt, who had taken on the Gujarat government headed by Narendra Modi over the 2002 post-Godhra riots, was on Wednesday sacked on the ground of "unauthorized absence" from service, an action which he said came after a "sham inquiry".

"Yes, it is true that my services have been terminated. This was expected. They have been conducting a completely ex-parte inquiry. I got the letter (sack order) from them (the home ministry)," Bhatt told PTI this evening.

Gujarat chief secretary G R Aloria confirmed the development. "Services of Sanjiv Bhatt have been terminated," he said.

Bhatt said he was sacked on the basis of "a sham inquiry" with regard to his "unauthorized absence" from service when he had come to Ahmedabad to depose before the SIT probing the 2002 riots.
"They (government) have been conducting a sham inquiry ... an ex-parte inquiry about unauthorized absence from duty," Bhatt said.

When asked if he will challenge his sacking, Bhatt said he did not want to impose himself on the government.

"A lot can be done (against the move) but whether it is worth challenging ... government does not want me, why should I be so keen that I want to remain in this," Bhatt said.

"I had joined the police with a passion, now it seems the country and this government does not need me. So whatever has happened is good. I cannot impose myself on the government."

Bhatt, a 1988 batch IPS officer, was under suspension since 2011 for unauthorized absence from service.

He had alleged in an affidavit in the Supreme Court that Narendra Modi, then the chief minister, instructed the top police officers to allow the Hindus "to vent out their anger" after the train-burning incident at Godhra in February 2002.

Bhatt had claimed that he had attended a meeting in this regard on February 27, 2002 at Modi's residence in Gandhinagar.

Timeline of the Riots in Modi’s Gujarat

For more than a decade, Indians have asked whether Narendra Modi, India’s new prime minister, could have slowed or stopped the bloody 2002 riots in Gujarat. Muslims make up about 14 percent of the Hindu-majority nation founded on a secular constitution. Religion has been used by many parties for political gain. Following is a reconstruction of key developments before, during and after the riots.

LETTER FROM SON TO FATHER

My son, Shantanu, was at King's Cross Station, London, when he learnt about my being removed from service. He sent me this message from the station. Shweta and I are too proud to have a loving son like him.

On this sad day, when the Republic of India loses one of its brightest, most intelligent, upright and courageous officer. I would like to salute you dad, I would like to salute you and thank you, as your son and as an educated, aware and responsible citizen of this wonderful country, for doing what was right without even thinking once what effects it might have on you and your career as an Indian Police Service Officer.

I would like to thank you for standing up for the people whose screams for help and protests fell on deaf ears! I would like to tell you today, how proud of you I am for fighting an uphill battle against a well equipped and dangerously subverted system with all your might and vigour,
but let me remind you that the battle is not over yet! It has just gotten dirtier and more dangerous, but you still stand where you stood 14 years ago in 2002 and with the same courage and fearlessness that you had when you entered the Indian Police Service 27 years ago, ready to take on even the most pernicious government which presides over the Republic of India at the moment.

We as a family have always stood behind you, supporting you and we will continue you to do so, the reprobate people running this government might try even harder to unsettle us a family now. But let me tell them that we are a family bound by undying love, trust and respect for each other, vain yet consistent attempts to break you and break us will only make us stronger and unflinching in our support towards you and the cause you are fighting for!

And lastly, I would like to congratulate you for getting freedom from the shackles of this rancorous government which tries to break and antagonise anyone who tries to speak up against them, or tries to stand up for what is right! In this new chapter of your life, I would wish you
all the very best for pursuing whatever makes you happy and satisfies you and we as a family will always be behind you, supporting every decision you take!

Lots of love and respect,

Shantanu Bhatt

(An extremely proud and loving son)

5 KILLED IN WIDESPREAD GUJARAT QUOTA VIOLENCE; ARMY CALLED IN

Tension mounted in Gujarat on Wednesday after five people were killed in fresh violence during a day-long shutdown triggered by a snowballing movement for reservation for the Patel community as Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for calm in the state.

The government called in the army and imposed a curfew in parts of Ahmedabad and other major cities after mobs attacked police with stones and sticks and burned vehicles after 22-year-old activist Hardik Patel vowed to intensify the movement.

As violence erupted a day after a mega-rally called by a Patel outfit spearheading the stir, cellphone communications were blocked in Ahmedabad to stop both rumours from spreading and gangs from coordinating their movements.

Hardik Patel, who leapt into the limelight after Tuesday’s massive rally, rejected suggestions that the protesters started the violence last night, saying police were trying to disrupt the movement at the behest of the political establishment.

“They (police) are indulging in violence. Police are beating (up) mothers, sisters and small children. They are doing it the same way it is done in UP and Bihar,” said Hardik Patel, spearheading the agitation under the banner of the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS).

As many as 100 buses were torched and property damaged in the violence in Ahmedabad, Surat and Mehsana cities and the towns of Unjha and Visnagar, officials said.

Normal life was paralysed in several parts of Gujarat as schools, colleges, business establishments including banks and public transport remained closed in view of the shutdown. About 5,000 personnel of Rapid Action Force, CRPF and BSF were sent to assist the administration maintain law and order, especially in curfew-bound areas.

Curfew was also imposed in parts of Surat city and Mehsana, in Unjha and Vishnagar town of Mehsana district on Tuesday night.

In a mega show of strength, the Patel community has warned the BJP government in Gujarat that it will face consequences in 2017 assembly polls if the plea is not accepted.

“If you do not give our right (reservation), we will snatch it. Whoever will talk of interest of Patels will rule over Patels,” Hardik told the gathering on Tuesday.

The Gujarat government had earlier rejected the demand

Under a Supreme Court ruling, reservations cannot cross the 50 per cent mark in any state which Gujarat has already reached.

HARDIK PATEL TAKES GUJARAT BY STORM, SMASHES CLAIMS OF ‘GROWTH’ WITH ‘REALITY’ OF POVERTY

Twenty two years old, and he has usurped all the images---of nationalism, Sardar Patel, Ram, Guns and Fire---from the Bharatiya Janata Party and its affiliates in Gujarat. But smashed the deliberated created image of growth and development with the story of poverty, acute discrimination and corruption.

Hardik Patel has emerged almost overnight as a community leader, attracting lakhs with just one call for “reservations”. He seems to be a simple lad from the village, but clearly has a political acumen that has placed him at the end of a major movement in Gujarat defying its former Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s claims of development and progress.

Hardik Patel who proved his strength with a five lakh plus crowd in the streets of Surat, has now threatened to bring over 25 lakh Patels to Ahmedabad if the government fails to concede his demand for ‘reservation'.

Hardik Patel is clearly exposing the claims by the state as being the most developed. Prime Minister Modi himself had cast Gujarat as a model of growth. But now Patel says that it is barely that, and the poverty is immense. Asked about this by the media he said, “look at the villages, these tell a different story.” In a very interesting panel discussion with a Hindi news channel Hardik Patel says that the majority of farmers committing suicide are Patels. He says that the farmers children are denied jobs despite securing excellent marks; and have to pay Rs 25 lakhs for a government job. To a follow up question by the interviewer who asked how come there was corruption in Gujarat when the world had been told that it was corruption-free, Hardik Patel said, “there is silent corruption”.

Patel whose demand for reservations for his community is gathering ground by the day, paints a dismal picture of Gujarat in every interview he has given, or meeting he has addressed. Farmers suicides, deprivation, poverty, corruption are all integral parts of the story of a state that had been projected for over a decade as a model of growth for India.

FEKU MODI !!

Where are the Achche Din: 5 promises that have come back to haunt Narendra Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Cabinet seem to be publicly backtracking from the promises the BJP made during the Lok Sabha elections.

On 24 August a minister in the Modi Cabinet denied that Achhe Din was ever a BJP slogan.

Even more embarrassing is the admission of senior leaders that certain promises were just chunavi jumla (dialogues).

Here are five promises that have come back to haunt BJP.

01 Achhe Din

Addressing a public meeting in Indore on 24 August, Union Minister for steel and mines, Narendra Singh Tomar said that the BJP never promised Achhe Din.

"We never promised Achhe Din. It was never our slogan. It was imposed on us by people on the social media," Tomar said.

02 Rupee fall

Every time the rupee fell during the UPA's tenure, Modi made it a point to poke fun at the then prime minister Manmohan Singh. He blamed the UPA regime for the fall of the rupee against the dollar.

He promised that the rupee wouldn't face such a crisis if he is elected prime minister.

However, the reality is that rupee continues to fall and a recovery won't be easy.

As of 24 August, the value of the rupee was 66.48 to a dollar, the lowest since September 2013.

03 Bringing back black money

One of the most popular promises made by Modi was that he would bring back all of India's black money that has been stashed away in Swiss banks.

Not just Modi, even Rajnath Singh had promised that the BJP would bring back black money within 100 days of coming to power.

But it has been in office for 15 months now and very little has been done on that front.

Modi had promised that every Indian will get Rs 15 lakh in his or her bank account. Earlier this year, BJP President admitted that it was just a jumla (dialogue) used while campaigning.

04 Pakistan policy

Perhaps Modi's most aggressive attacks on the UPA were on the government's policy towards Pakistan. He accused Manmohan Singh of being a PM who lacked the guts to take on Pakistan.

But it turns out that despite Modi's "muscular" foreign policy, ceasefire violations from Pakistan have actually increased. Several Indian soldiers and civilians have died and the attempts to build pressure on Pakistan have failed.

05 Silent PM

Modi often mocked Manmohan Singh's silence. Initially, Modi seemed a welcome change as he gave louder and longer speeches. But he has remained completely silent on many contentious issues such as corruption. Nowhere is his silence and absence more glaring than in Parliament.

The Opposition has used his absence to attack the government. Even during the recent debate on the adjournment motion, Sushma Swaraj had to face repeated taunts that "Modi had left her alone to defend herself".

Modi didn't even say anything substantial to the media. Take for instance Modi response on the Parliament logjam.

There are many more promises that have remained unfulfilled - such as removing criminals from politics, reducing the price of petrol in accordance with falling international oil prices, preventing farmer suicides, jobs for all, controlling inflation and so on.

But there are many who hope that Modi will manage to achieve something in the remainder of his tenure.

Modi's failed promises have sparked many jokes on social media and WhatsApp. Here's one that summarises the pain of those who took his promises seriously:

Waiting for Achhe Din

After the BJP won the elections with a full majority on 16 May, 2014, a Modi fan fainted with happiness and went into coma. After 15 months, he suddenly came out from the coma. Returning to his senses he asked the following questions to the attending doctor.

How do you feel in "corruption free India"?

Are Rahul and Sonia Gandhi in jail or have they escaped to Italy?

Should I book a bullet train ticket to Lucknow or should I go by plane

How much black money did we get back from Swiss Banks?

After the Rs 15 lakh every Indian received from Modiji, there must be "no poverty".

Has the US dollar dropped to Rs 35?

How happy are Indians after Modiji subsidised cooking gas, vegetables, tomatoes, onions and potatoes?

After Pakistan got frightened and returned Dawood Ibrahim, what happened to him?

Are farmers happy now that the land forcibly acquired by the Congress, has been returned to them?

Have the Armed Forces got One Rank One Pension?

Listening to these questions, the poor doctor has gone into a coma, and the Modi fan was sent to a mental asylum
.

Indian markets lost ground last week against global players, few hedge funds tried to maintain levels on their purchases but due to failure by Indian finance department seems like nothing is going to get back confidence for international investors.
USstocks‬ rebounded after massive losses, however, both the market situation and the broader economy remain fragile amidst high exposure to overseas risks, while Washington’s ability to act limited by fiscal and monetary implication.
