This article by GM Bhai is abundantly informative.
Keep in mind -
Yusuf Najmuddin studied law, was an LLB, along with being an erudite Arabic scholar. He was the powerhouse senior adviser/bully toward Syedna Burhanuddin Saheb . He masterminded this entire centralized control thing, and that is the legacy he passed on to his survivors. In the name of faith and your imaan, he tried whatever he could to retain power. It is indeed enlightening that during his lifetime, he only courted with "yes-men" and "jee Saheb, Haa Saheb, Jem kaho tem, Saheb", and systematically alienated the intellectuals and othe powerhouses in the community, even trying to excommunicate them - with people who offered different views.
BTW, the Late SHZ. Huzaifa bhaisaheb was also a lawyer, and handled Dawats legal matters. One wonders how much he colluded with the status quo - how much of a player he was, or whether he was a puppet. One thing is clear though, - he never stayed in limelight, and avoided mega events- ziyafats etc.. He seemed uninvolved in the political dirty tricks, but from this report by Insaafbhai, he seems very much involved - if he was handling legal matters.
