so maatam-e-hussain can be done for celebratory purposes ('khushi') as well?
wow!
so now we have multi-purpose maatams among dawoodi abde bohras.
to summarise:
1. to mourn the shahadat of hussain and the tragic events of kerbala
2. to prolong the life of syedna, tulul umr ta qayamat sehato aafeeyat
3. to demonstrate khushi, such as welcoming safiya (same as mafiya, only this species are from saifee mahal)
4. the length of maatam is directly proportional to its wished for effect. viz. 100 hours maatam for syedna means it is hoped he is granted another 100 weeks reprieve from malekul maut
5. force exerted during maatam translates into sense of urgency to be conveyed to ilah ul falak, on behalf of ilah ul ardh
6. sound generated (and the more decibels and rhythmic the better) during maatam is intended to shake the pillars of jannat and wake up allah from his slumber and let him know, most forcefully, that abde bohras will not tolerate any nonsense, dai's health better be restored, or else....
7. maatam to be done between fardh and sunnat namaaz. this improves the 'quality' of your devotion and increases its efficacy by transmitting a much stronger and clearer signal through heavenly lines of communication
8. doing maatam together and in ever increasing larger numbers in exotic locations, casts an aura of stunned silence and brings spirituality to the heathens and pagans of the surrounding areas, much like an earthquake spreads from its epicentre
as abde bohras progress and evolve (as per saifee-burhani ilm), i am sure they will 'discover' many new and innovative uses for this all-pervasive act of self-flagellation and find even more amazing benefits for their health, spirituality, khushi and devotion and will continue to incorporate it into their lives.
