An under-construction church in Kaimri village near Hisar was vandalised by a group and the cross replaced with an idol of Hanuman, triggering tension in the area in Haryana.

Father Subhash Chand of Williwarsh church lodged a complaint against 14 people, following which a case was registered by police under sections 147 (Punishment for rioting), 153A (promoting enmity between groups), 295 (destroying, damaging a place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class of persons), 380 (theft in a building), 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC.

The complainant stated that the accused fragmented the cross and installed the statue of Hanuman and a flag depicting Lord Ram and threatened to kill him.

He alleged that they stole a cooler and some items from the worship place that was under construction. Hisar range deputy inspector general (DIG) Saurabh Singh said that the situation was under control.

Meanwhile, Christian Front Haryana has condemned the incident and has demanded immediate arrest of the accused, all residents of Kaimri.

VHP defends attack on Haryana church, calls 1857 'communal war'

Aggressively defending the demolition of a church in Haryana's Hisar, VHP on Monday asked whether Christians would allow construction of a Hanuman temple in the Vatican City.

VHP joint general secretary Surendra Jain called the 1857 war of independence a communal war fought for religion and said similar wars would be waged if Christians did not stop conversions.

He also claimed that the allegations of communal overtones in the gang rape of a nun in Nadia in West Bengal were a conspiracy of the church and that sexual exploitation of nuns was a Christian culture, and not of Hindus. He said the Pope is so worried about rape of nuns that he is promoting gay sex to stop it.

On the gang-rape of a nun in West Bengal, Jain said it should be viewed as a crime and not through the prism of religion. "It is a Christian culture to exploit nuns. We don't do such things. The Vatican received 5,000 complaints of sexual exploitation in five years prompting the pope to appeal for legalization of gay sex," Jain said.

The VHP member also supported the statement of Subramanian Swamy that "God does not live in mosques but in temples". "This is a truth that even Muslims agree to. Ask any Muslim if Allah lives in mosque and he will reply in the negative. Saudi Arabia has demolished so many mosques for developmental work, no body has objected," he said.

“Gandhi’s assassination was not a spontaneous act. There were five murder attempts made before Gandhi was actually killed. Godse was involved in two of the previous attempts. RSS’s visceral hatred towards Gandhi was because of his commitment to composite nationalism and his position on untouchability”.

Godse in characteristic RSS style lied blatantly when he claimed he killed Gandhi for the issue of Partition or the transfer of Rs 55 crores to Pakistan. Setalvad writes in the introduction of the Dossier- “The attempts on Gandhi’s life that began in 1934 were a response to the dominant political articulations of nationhood, caste, and economic and other democratic rights which directly challenged the idea of a hegemonistic and authoritarian Hindu Rashtra. In 1933, a year before the first attempt on his life, Gandhi had declared firm support to two Bills, one of which was against the abhorrent practice of untouchability.” RSS in its vicious propaganda never dares to mention the same she said.

“In 1925, Gandhi offered unqualified support to the Vykom Satyagraha, launched by the local leaders of Travancore (in present-day Kerala) who were protesting the ban on the entry of ‘untouchables’ on roads surrounding the Vykom temples. Through Young India Gandhi carried the message of the struggle of the satyagrahis to the rest of India until, finally, the matter began to be addressed by the national press. In March 1925 he went to Vykom and addressed public meetings there, besides holding discussions with leaders of the orthodoxy who were opposing the campaign. Finally, in January 1926, the Travancore government had to yield to the satyagrahis and announced the opening of roads around temples in Vykom to the ‘untouchables’. Gandhi pushed further, insisting that all public institutions, including temples, be opened to all. A few years later, on 20 September 1932, he undertook a fast unto death to implement the Communal Award. The Poona or Yervada Pact which came in its aftermath also gave a huge impetus to the movement for justice to the ‘untouchables’.


The point, however, remains. Gandhi, who drew his moral force from his religion and wished to fundamentally reform and alter its approach to the structured inequity and indignity of caste, posed a great threat to those who would rather speak in the name of the Hindu faith, i.e. the fanatical fringe.”

Senior Journalist Kumar Ketkar observed that “RSS is not an organization anymore. It is an ideology that is present in all sections of the society and across all political parties.”

Kumar Ketkar added that Modi’s victory was ten percent because of Development propaganda but mostly because of 2002 Gujrat. According to the Seniior Journalist RSS has managed to penetrate into some sections of Bengal also. While they may not emerge as the biggest party in West Bengal in next elections they may loom up menacingly as the second most important party, he said.

The assassination of Mahatma Gandhi on 30 January 1948 was a declaration of war and a statement of intent. For the forces who conspired in the killing, the act was a declaration of war against the secular, democratic Indian state and all those who stood to affirm these principles, as well as an announcement of a lasting commitment to India as a ‘Hindu Rashtra’. It was also an act to signal the elimination of all that India’s national movement against imperialism stood for.

At a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is keen on avoiding any controversy on religious issues, six advocates with RSS leanings moved the Agra city civil court on Wednesday seeking a declaration that the Taj Mahal is actually a Shiva temple!

The plaintiffs, Hari Shankar Jain and five others, named Lord Agreshwar Mahadev as the main plaintiff to claim ownership of the property, now under the control and maintenance of the Archaeological Survey of India. The suit seeks a direction to remove all alleged burials under the Taj Mahal; as well as to restrain worship by Muslims and to allow worship of Lord Shiva by Hindus. This suit was filed even as the title suit for the disputed Ram Janmabhoomi site in Ayodhya is pending adjudication in the Supreme Court.

The suit claimed ownership for the building complex along with a building (claimed to be a masjid) towards the west and a replica building in the east, along with the garden, western, eastern and southern gates situated within a boundary wall over Khasra No. 12 measuring 77 bighas and four biswas.

The suit claimed the entire temple was the seat of Lord Agreshwar Mahadev Naagnatheshwar since time immemorial, and that the property belonged to the deity. It said: “The property in suit is not a burial ground and has never been so in the past. There exists no real grave in the entire suit property. The use of the suit property for purposes other than Hindu ‘pooja’ and worship of the deity is unlawful and has become unconstitutional since the enforcement of the Constitution. The deity is a perpetual minor under Hindu law. The property once vested in the deity continues to be the deity’s property and even the King could not have taken or transferred the possession of HIS property.”

Court Says Taj Mahal Is Not A Hindu Temple, But These Lawyers Just Won't Budge

A civil court in Agra has dismissed a lawsuit claiming that Taj Mahal was a Hindu temple and its ownership should be transferred to the community.

Lawyer for the plaintiffs Rajesh Kulshreshtra told PTI that the court refused to entertain the petition and dismissed it on Thursday. "We will now approach the Allahabad High Court and we are confident our PIL will be admitted on merit there," Kulshreshtra said.

He claimed that there was substantial evidence to prove that the Taj Mahal was a Shiva temple, dedicated to Lord Agreshwar Mahadev. The suit demanded that the monument's ownership be transferred to Hindus and Muslims be restrained from offering prayers there.

Alirajpur in Madhya Pradesh is targetted afresh by RSS and Bajrang Dal. Playing high volume music on DJs in front of the mosque and trying to provoke Muslim community has been continued since Ramnavmi. But yesterday, one shop of a Muslim was put to fire. A Muslim boy was beaten. I talked to some people in Alirajpur. I talked to some people in Alirajpur and Jhabua and they told that the atmosphere is very tense. Police and administration are either supporting the hooligans or they have chosen the role of becoming silent spectators. The officers are reassuring their senior authorities sitting in Bhopal and Indore that everything is under control. I request all concerned to keep an eye on Alirajpur. It is a Adivasi dominated area of Western Madhya Pradesh which is also known for heroic battles fought by Adivasis against forced displacement.

Recently, it was reported in 2nd March's Hindustan Times Indore edition newspaper that some Christian's farm was attacked by some so called Hindu right wingers alleging him to be involved in conversion using the same old excuse.

Impose Emergency and sterilise Muslims, Christians forcibly, says Hindu Mahasabha leader

She also said that idols of Hindu gods and goddesses should be placed in mosques and churches.

"The population of Muslims and Christians is growing day by day. To rein in this, Centre will have to impose emergency, and Muslims and Christians will have to be forced to undergo sterilisation so that they can't increase their numbers," vice president of All India Hindu Mahasabha, Sadhvi Deva Thakur told reporters in Jind.

She also exhorted Hindus to have more children and increase their population so as to have an effect on the world. In another controversial remark, she said idols of Hindu gods and goddesses should be placed in mosques and churches.

Thakur also came out strongly in support of installing a statue of "patriot" Nathuram Godse in Haryana.

As BJP completes a year at the Centre, RSS grows exponentially

With the Narendra Modi-led BJP government completeing a year at the Centre, one organisation which has benefitted the most in this period is the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

As the BJP recently became the world's largest political organisation with 10 crore membership, the Sangh's base has also swelled at 10-15% rate over the past four years.

The saffron institution has opened 6,000 more shakhas (branches) from April 2014 to March 2015. It now has 51,330 shakhas operating in 33,222 places across the country, states the annual report of the saffron organisation for 2014-15. A year ago, there were just 44,982 shakhas operating in 29,624 places.

"The Sangh meetings also see presence of the chiefs of media, judges, educationists, government officers, saints, litterateurs and distinguished personalities," notes the annual report.

And more and more youngsters are becoming keen to join the right wing organisation these days. The number of student shakhas has touched to 6,077, a 14% growth in the past one year.

Tech-savvy youngsters are also sending online feelers. From a monthly online request of 1,000 to join the organisation in 2012, the number has jumped to more than 10,000 now, prompting the organisation leaders to hold more meetings with its members to consolidate the newfound base.

"We had started working on an expansion plan according to the deliberations made in the Akhil Bharteeya Pratinidhi Sabha held in Nagpur in 2012. After three years of continuous efforts, we see this growth," said Pramod Bapat, RSS prachar pramukh (Konkan region).

"Now, we are trying to go to new places across India to expand our base."

The expansion agenda includes Aurangabad in Maharashtra (Sangh calls it Sambhajinagar), where hardliner All-India Majlise-Ittehadul Muslimeen has made inroads, Meerut in UP, Imphal in the northeast and hilly Uttarakhand.

Bapat insisted that the RSS recruits only "serious and skilled" people who believe in silent work. Though the total membership of the Sangh is not known, considering that each shakha usually has 80-120 members, according to Bapat, an estimated figure comes to 52-53 lakh.

With the massive and increasing support, Sangh's strategy is to consolidate its position and expand more all over the country, especially among the youth, in the next three years. This will also help the BJP in the 2019 general elections.

Color Coding of Communal Politics

As per the reports from Ahmadabad (12th April 2015) the uniform at Shahpur School; where most of the students are Hindus; is saffron and the color of uniform in Dani Limda school where almost all the students are Muslims; the color is green. This is absolutely shocking! One knew that the ghettoization of Muslims in Ahmadabad is probably the worst in the country but whether the things will go this far was unbelievable. The process of communalization which worsened after the 2002 Gujarat carnage is seeing a new low with incidents like this one.

Surely this is the most blatant expression of communalisation- segregation-ghettoisation physical and psychological, which the country as a whole and Gujarat in the most extreme form, is witnessing. While the communities do many times prefer to stay in the localities frequented by their likes, the situation in most of the north Indian metros and even to some extent in smaller towns also is very bad. The segregation of communities along religious lines has gone up to the frightening levels all through. In Ahmadabad, particularly post 2002 carnage the majority of nearly 12% of Muslim population has been forced to live in Juhapura and Shah Alam area, both predominantly Muslim areas. Irrespective of the socio-economic profile the Muslims are not permitted to buy houses in mixed localities. The banks don’t extend their credit card facilities in these areas and neither does eating outlets deliver pizzas etc. in these localities.

In India the phenomenon of ghettoisation of Muslim community has run parallel and as an aftermath of the communal violence. Once the violence occurs in a particular city that city is affected very severely and its fallout is seen in other cities as well. In the cities where major communal violence has been witnessed, this has been the invariable accompaniment. The cities like Mumbai, Bhagalpur, Jamshedpur, Muzzafarnagar in particular. In cities like Delhi also this phenomenon is clearly discernible to the extent that even the Muslim faculty members of JNU, the prestigious University with the tag of a liberal institution, also prefer to live in the Muslim majority areas. The builders in the major cities make it a point of not selling the housing units to the members of minority community. I know of a faculty member of the prestigious Tata Institute of Social Sciences Mumbai being denied the house on the ground of religion.

Talking of Mumbai, it is probably the most cosmopolitan city with high cultural diversity. In this city the famous film star and social activist Shabana Azmi was denied the house in a mixed locality and similar was the plight of another well known film star Emran Hashmi. There is a long chain of phenomenon leading to such situations where the religion becomes the central marker of one’s identity, overtaking the national identity, and so the right to access to housing of one’s choice is practically ruled out. These are unwritten rules which are part of social practices.

As far as ghettoization is concerned, currently we are faced with a debate featuring this phenomenon as talks are on to plan make separate colonies for Kashmiri Pandits in Kashmir Valley. This plan is being opposed by different quarters as this will definitely lead to ghetto like situation for Pandits. The Kashmiriyat culture, the core point of Muslim-Hindu amity in the Valley has already been undermined due to the strife raging in the valley from last over two decades. On the top of that such a scheme of the Government will further enhance the divisive spirit in the state.

As such segregation of communities along caste/sect lines is a dominant feature in Pakistan as well, as the dominant political discourse has revolved around complex sectarian divides. The ghettoization of African Americans in United States goes back to the injustices done to these sections in America. Lately one hears a lot about the urban ghettoes in countries like where the immigrants from ex-colonies, not getting their due in the society subsist in the in the poorer areas.

How do we deal with such a situation where the divisiveness created by communal politics is ruling the roost? On a visit to Singapore I saw the massive housing colonies in different residential clusters. I was told that within these housing complexes, there is an quota system of allotment of housing units in the same complex along ethnic lines. Different ethnic groups, Malays, Chinese and Tamils have been allotted certain percentage according to their proportion in the population. This does encourage different groups to interact with each other on various occasions and promotes amity between them. What do we do in the face of a situation where the schools are choosing uniforms according to the religion of the children, and how come the percentage of children is overwhelmingly Muslim or Hindu in particular areas? This is due to physical segregation and is contrary to the spirit of communal harmony and the values ingrained in the basics of Indian Constitution, the spirit of Fraternity. One has to counter the myths, biases and prejudices about the ‘other community’ as these stereotypes form the base of communal violence, which in turn paves the way for segregation and ghettoization which further leads to ‘cultural demarcation’, the way these two schools show. What type of future society we can envisage with such stereotypes entering into our education system. The physical and emotional divides which are coming up are detrimental to the unity of the nation as a whole.

The communal violence has brought to fore the religious identity without bring in the values of tolerance and acceptance for the ‘other’. I remember having watched V.Shantarams’ 1946 classic Padosi (neighbor) and leaving the theatre with moist eyes, wondering whether Hindus and Muslims can ever live like this again, whether the composite culture which India inherits has any chance of survival in the prevalent divisive political scenario!

Signages of roads named after Muslim personalities such as Emperor Akbar and Firozshah, among others, were found defaced late Wednesday. The names have been blackened and posters of right-wing group — Shiv Sena Hindustan — were pasted on them.

The posters read, ‘Bharat mein Islamikaran manzoor nahi. Safar mein mushkilen aaye himmat aur badti hai. Koi agar raasta roke toh zaroorat aur bhardti hai. Jai Hind! Jai Bharat! (Islamisation will not be tolerated in India. Our courage only grows when our journey meets difficulties. Our need only grows when our path meets with obstacles)’.

The names of Rajinder Singh (national president), Charan Singh (national general secretary), Dinesh Kumar (national secretary) and Vinay Sonkar (secretary) of Shiv Sena Hindu-stan were also on the poster.

Outfit president Rajinder Singh said around 17 members, in three teams, carried out the “operation” between 11 pm and 1 am on the intervening night of May 13-14.

We had written to former PM Manmohan Singh a couple of times, protesting against the use of Muslim names for roads in a country called Hindustan. All Hindus look up to a leader like our Prime Minister Narendra Modi. We are hopeful that he will pay some heed to our concerns.’

Sonkar said his organisation was a splinter group of the Shiv Sena. “We parted ways with the Shiv Sena because it was too limited to Maharashtra and its activities never ventured beyond the state. We have built our base in around 12 states, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Delhi. Our Delhi unit has around 1,300 members and we often meet to carry out our nationalist agenda,” he said.

“Senior leaders held a meeting on Wednesday and discussed several of our issues, including the plan to deface signages of roads named after Muslims. Our group members carried out the task. We have a problem with roads in the city not being named after our leaders like Subhash Chandra Bose and others who fought for Independence. The names of unpatriotic people adorn our pathways,” Sonkar said.
The area falls under the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and the civic body has lodged a police complaint.

“We have already filed a complaint and an FIR is being registered in the case. We are in the process of replacing the vandalised boards,”NDMC spokesperson Jagjiwan Bakshi said.

DCP (New Delhi) Vijay Singh said, “The PCR received a call last night from a local resident who alerted us about the defacement of one of the road signs. We will be registering an FIR under charges of defacement of public property and other appropriate section soon. We are going through CCTV camera footage to ascertain the identity of the miscreants.”

It is not surprising, therefore, that some Hindutva organizations went about celebrating One Year of the Modi Government in the way that they did. They painted over in black signs for Delhi roads that are named after Muslims. Officials of the New Delhi Municipal Corporation told reporters on May 16 that "Signages of Safdar Hashmi Marg, Feroz Shah Road, Aurangzeb Road and Akbar Road were blackened...We have lodged an FIR for defacement of property."

The FIR was lodged without mentioning any names despite the fact that posters were pasted on the defaced signboards stating that 'Bharat mein Islamikaran manzoor nahi. Safar mein mushkilen aaye himmat aur badti hai. Koi agar raasta roke toh zaroorat aur bhadti hai. Jai Hind! Jai Bharat ! (Islamisation will not be tolerated in India. Votaries of Hindutva claim to believe in real 'secularism'. They remind us repeatedly that they are not opposed to Muslims as such. Muslims who accept their Hindu origins are treated by them as equal fellow citizens. Muslims who respect Hindu culture and traditions are also completely acceptable. It is only Muslims who are fanatics and have been responsible for atrocities committed on Hindus who are to be deemed anti-national.

It is interesting, then, to take a second look at the four names defaced. The first is that of Safdar Hashmi, an atheistic Communist artist of many talents - theatre person, actor, poet, writer - who was killed by Congress goons while performing for a working-class audience as part of a campaign for a strike action. The second name is that of Feroz Shah, founder of the Tughlaq dynasty. No instructions have been given by the Home Ministry to the Delhi Police to take action in the matter despite the fact that a crime has been committed by criminals who have flaunted the fact of their involvement.

SACW announces the release of a report on the Hindu nationalist circuit in the United States

Published by sacw.net, this report compiles publicly available tax records, newspaper articles, and other materials on non-profit groups in the United States affiliated with the Sangh Parivar (family of Hindu nationalist groups) from 2001-2014, documenting a segment of the projects and priorities of U.S.-based Hindu nationalism. This report discusses the strategies and activities of Hindu nationalist groups in the United States in four areas of mobilization.

1. Over the last three decades, a movement toward Hinduizing India—advancing the status of Hindus toward political and social primacy in India— has continued to gain ground in South Asia and diasporic communities. The Sangh Parivar (the Sangh “family”), the network of groups at the forefront of this Hindu nationalist movement, has an estimated membership numbering in the millions, making the Sangh one of the largest voluntary associations in India. The major organizations in the Sangh include the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajrang Dal, and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

2. Hindu nationalism has intensified and multiplied forms of discrimination, exclusion, and gendered and sexualized violence against Muslims, Christians, other minorities, and those who oppose Sangh violations, as documented by Indian citizens and international tribunals, fact-finding groups, international human rights organizations, and U.S. governmental bodies.

3. India-based Sangh affiliates receive social and financial support from its U.S.-based wings, the latter of which exist largely as tax-exempt non-profit organizations in the United States: Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS), Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America (VHPA), Sewa International USA, Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation-USA. The Overseas Friends of the Bharatiya Janata Party - USA (OFBJP) is active as well, though it is not a tax-exempt group.

Over the last two decades, Sangh-affiliated organizations have emerged as leaders in Indo-American communities. Major events include:

a) Overseas Friends of the BJP (OFBJP) co-hosted a luncheon on Capitol Hill in early March 2002 with two other major Indian-American organizations, while BJP-ruled Gujarat witnessed mass killings of Muslims.

b) OFBJP members and the Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) were among the leadership that sought to host Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as an honored guest speaker in 2005.

c) In the California textbook controversy of 2005-2006, the Vedic Foundation and Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh’s educational wing, the Hindu Education Foundation, led an effort to insert edits into California textbooks that foregrounded Hindu nationalist priorities and downplayed gender and caste oppression in Ancient India.

d) Since the textbooks controversy, the Hindu American Foundation has become a voice for Hindu nationalist interests to U.S. politicians.

Further Steps

Further investigations are needed to explore:

a) possible legal culpability of U.S.-based Sangh groups and members in Sangh-led violent acts in South Asia;
b) possible violations of 501(c)(3) regulations and restrictions; and
c) the involvement of other U.S.-based groups and individuals in supporting violence perpetrated by Hindu nationalist groups.

Manufacturing And Undermining National Icons: RSS Style

Many social and political processes related to projection of some icons and undermining of the others have intensified during last few years. Even during the last regime of NDA led BJP rule from 1998, Savakar’s portrait was unveiled in the Parliament. At one level the game of undermining some icons and projecting icons is a part of various political streams and RSS seems to be the past master in the same. One recalls its machinery has been putting forward some names. bypassing others and undermining some others. Since the time Modi has come to power as Prime Minister Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse is being upheld by many from RSS combine. One BJP MP called him a patriot and other BJP MP said that Godse chose the wrong target, instead of Gandhi; he should have chosen Nehru as his target. There are demands from various quarters to allot land for raising his statues in different places.

Times and over again Sardar Patel is projected vis a vis Nehru. In one of the speeches Modi said Patel should have been the first Prime minister of India instead of Nehru. Various ‘word of mouth’ propaganda to denigrate Nehru has been the consistent activity of many. Again to undermine Nehru Modi said something which was not true. He said that Nehru did not attend the funeral of Sardar Patel. This again is a blatant lie. As far as Mahatma Gandhi is concerned this present ruling dispensation has projected him but only for the values of cleanliness. One knows that the stature of Mahatma is such that even those who do not believe in his inclusive nationalism have also to pay obeisance to him at home as well as abroad. To circumvent this problem while the core essence of Gandhi’s struggle for Hindu Muslim unity is sidelined, the teachings of the Mahatma for National Integration are given a go bye and he is projected for only for swachhta abhiyan (cleanliness drive).

Currently major concerted efforts are being made to highlight Ambedkar. There are statements that Ambedkar and Hedgewars’ (The founder and first supreme leader of RSS) values were similar, both were against untouchability for example. RSS mouthpiece Organiser (English) and Panchjanya (Hindi) have come out with the special supplements on the life of Ambedkar, presenting his teachings in a distorted manner to create the illusion that there was similarity between the teachings of RSS ideology of HIndutva and Ambedkars values. Ambedkar had contributed in various ways for social justice and democratic values and struggle for annihilation of caste was the foremost amongst the movements launched by him. Incidentally one need to recall that in contrast to Ambedkars Annihilation of caste, RSS has floated and organization called ‘Samajik Samrasta Manch’ (Social Harmony Forum) which works for bringing harmony between castes without challenging the very existence of caste, which was the prime motive of Ambedkar.

One can see two trends in the exercise being done by the RSS combine. On one hand since RSS never participated in the freedom struggle as an organization, it has no icon to present as a freedom fighter. This is why they have to stretch their myth making to project Savarkar as being a freedom fighter. The case of Savarkar is peculiar. He was initially working against the British rule but after he was jailed in Andaman’s, he buckled under pressure and turned from anti British revolutionary to the one who apologized to British and later never participated in any anti British agitation. That’s all RSS combine has to show for their participation in freedom struggle. Even Savarkar was not the part of RSS, but ideologically Savarkar and RSS both held Hindutva, Hindu nation as their goals.

As many in the RSS combine revere Godse, he always slips in as the major icon for them. Godse was initially trained in RSS Shakhas and later he went onto become the Secretary of Pune Branch of Hindu Mahasabha. Since many BJP leaders have background in RSS shakhas, and are on same page as Godse as far as Hindu Nationalism is concerned, they do come out to praise Godse. These two, Savarkar and Godse are projected to show their allegiance to the ideology of Hindu nationalism in contrast to Indian nationalism, which is the core part of Indian Constitution. This is necessary for them as they are projecting themselves as biggest nationalists unmindful of the fact that their nationalism is Hindu Nationalism and not Indian Nationalism. They want to derive legitimacy from Savarkars’ initial anti British role. The later part of Savarkar where he kept aloof from freedom movements is the exact way in which RSS also kept aloof from freedom movement.

At another level they want to contrast Patel with Nehru. It is meant to undermine Nehru. Patel and Nehru, both were close allies on most of the issues related to freedom movement, both were the major followers of Gandhi, who was their mentor and they were collaborating with each other in the national movement and later as part of the first Cabinet of Independent India. RSS combine cannot swallow the uncompromising stand taken by Nehru during his long years of Prime Minister-ship on the issues of secularism and his long association with these principles in a forthright way so they want to contrast him with Patel, who was also a deeply secular person.

At another level there are some in-house icons which are propped up or are undermined. RSS second Sarsanghchalak Golwalkar has been a great influence on generations of RSS workers. His book, ‘We or Nationhood defined’, shaped the thought process of many of them. He went to the extent of upholding Hitler’s method and type of nationalism expounded by him. His book used to be available in RSS shops for long time. One of his quotes sums up the RSS ideology very well, writes Golwalkar “German national pride has now become the topic of the day. To keep up the purity of nation and its culture, Germany shocked the world by her purging the country of semitic races-The Jews. National pride at its highest has been manifested here. Germany has also shown how neigh impossible it is for races and cultures, having differences going to the root, to be assimilated into one united whole, a good lesson for us in Hindustan to learn and profit by. (We or Our nationhood Defined P. 27, Nagpur 1938). From more than a decade ago RSS started feeling embarrassed about this due to electoral-political compulsions and started making arguments that this book was not written by Golwalkar. It was withdrawn from market. Here electoral expediency shaped their decision.

At another level they have been projecting Deendayal Upadhayay as the major figure. Deendayal Upadhdyay is the ideologue who had coined “integral humanism’ as the concept, this essentially talks about upholding status quo of social relations of caste in particular. This is done to give a subtle message of deeper agenda of the RSS politics. The play with the icons goes with the long term program of the cultural and social manipulation for building a society with the hegemony of Hindutva politics, a politics which derives its name from a religion but at core is the political agenda of elite of the Hindu society, irrespective of the fact that some from the lower strata of society are also co-opted for this political agenda. It’s due to this that RSS focuses a lot on propagating the culture of a variety which is sectarian and backward looking, the agenda of Hindu Nationalism.

AIMPLB to Move SC Against Inclusion of Gita in School Syllabus

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has said that they will move the Supreme Court against inclusion of Bhagwad Gita and the compulsory practise of Surya Namaskar and Yoga in schools.

"The decision of Rajasthan, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh governments to include Bhagwad Gita in school syllabus will be challenged in SC. The court will also be approached against Surya Namaskar and Yoga in schools," an official release of AIMPLB issued here said.

"As there is provision of worshipping only Allah in Islam, the Muslim community has its objections regarding implementing Yoga, Surya Namaskar and Bhagwad Gita in schools. This should not be forced on all students," AIMPLB spokesman Abdul Rahim Qureishi said.

The meeting voiced concern over attempts by "communal forces to saffronise education" and observed that such forces were trying to deviate the country from path of secularism, the release said.

AIMPLB also threatened to launch a countrywide agitation against any move to repeal Muslim personal laws by terming them "useless".

At the meeting, it was also decided to draw the attention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to such matters and request him not to implement recommendations to repeal Muslim Waqf Law 1913 and 1930, Muslim Personal Law and Muslim Marriage Act, the release said.

To prevent misuse of 'Talaq' (divorce) and to discuss the plight of women who were given Talaq, the AIMPLB decided to hold a meeting of Ulemas and experts of Sharia laws.

Several court orders that went against the Sharia law were also discussed in the meeting.

The board has a working committee of 41 Ulemas representing various schools of thought.

Indoctrination in the guise of education

The decision to introduce the Bhagavad Gita in the Haryana school curriculum goes against India’s secular character and its present policy of education

It was reported in February that the Haryana government’s Educational Consultative Committee (ECC), headed by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh ideologue Dinanath Batra, urged the State Council of Educational Research and Training to suggest slokas from the Bhagavad Gita that could be introduced in the school curriculum.

This move wasn’t surprising; it is perfectly in line with other events: Prime Minister Narendra Modi presenting the Gita to the heads of states, Sushma Swaraj demanding that the Gita be declared “Rashtriya Granth” (national scripture), and Mr. Batra being appointed to the Haryana government’s ECC. All of these moves are consistent with the Bharatiya Janata Party’s ideology. But do they fit with the Constitution, which enshrines the principle of secularism, as well as the education policy of the country?

‘Sarva Dharma Samabhava’, coupled with the principle of equality, demands that scriptures from any one religion cannot be chosen to be included in the curriculum. If this is the case, then selected verses from scriptures of all religions professed by Indian citizens — Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Zoroastrianism, etc. — should be included. Not doing this or not accepting these will amount to rejecting even the ‘Sarva-Dharma Samabhava’ as a principle of state policy and functioning. So far, there seems to be no decision to include any other scripture other than the Gita. Therefore, the plan to include the Gita in the curriculum is certainly communal in character and goes against the education policy.

The state can, of course, present the argument that only those slokas which have acceptance as moral values and which can be rationally defended will be selected from the Gita. But all scriptures have moral values that can be cherry-picked and presented as something good for humanity. This kind of cherry-picking does not help in understanding their overall character and philosophy. And they will result in indoctrinating the young into a religion whose book they do not understand. This precisely is the kind of education that prepares the ground for fundamentalism.

The problem is not in studying the Gita to understand the religious thinking of ancient Hindus; rather, it is in taking Gita as an uncritical guide in accordance with what it demands: “let scripture be your authority when you establish what you should do and not do.”(ibid, 16:24)

There are several problems in including the Gita in the Haryana school curriculum. They relate to the preference of one religion over another, a clear programme of indoctrination, pedagogical difficulties, and an uncritical preaching of casteism through varna theory. The introduction of Gita in the curriculum, therefore, is certainly a decision that goes against the present policy of education and the secular character of the country. The decision seems to be motivated by the desire to proclaim hegemony of a section of upper caste Hindus. If this decision is seen in conjunction with other decisions such as making suryanamaskar compulsory in Rajasthan schools, and banning the consumption of beef in Maharashtra, it is difficult to draw any other conclusion.

NEW DELHI: Calling the victory of the BJP- led alliance in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections as initiation of a "revolution" in the country, VHP patron Ashok Singhal on Saturday said by 2020, India would be a Hindu nation.

"I was at the Sai Baba Ashram where Sai Baba told me by 2020 the entire country will be Hindu and 2030 the entire world will be Hindu. I feel that revolution has started," he said at a function here attended by external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj and other RSS functionaries.

Hailing the coming to power of the Narendra Modi government, he said the victory has put an end to the 800 years of "slavery".

"This is not a modest revolution. It will not remain confined to India but present a new ideology before the world," he said.

2004 J&K mosque attack: A file goes missing, trail cold in attack by ‘Hindu extremists’

The grenade attack on a Friday prayer gathering at the Ahle Hadees mosque in Peer Mitha on January 9, 2004, had left two J&K officials dead and 19 injured.

An investigation into the theft of a police file on a 2004 grenade attack on a mosque in Jammu has gone cold. In this case too, the NIA had blamed Hindu extremists, including two held in the Malegaon blasts case and currently in judicial custody.

The grenade attack on a Friday prayer gathering at the Ahle Hadees mosque in Peer Mitha on January 9, 2004, had left two J&K officials dead and 19 injured. The Jammu police had initially blamed a small militant outfit, Tehreek-ul Mujahideen, and arrested 108 people. In 2005, the case was closed as “untraced”.

Seven years later, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had said Rajendra Chaudhary and Dhan Singh, arrested in connection with the 2007 Samjhauta Express attack and the 2008 Malegaon blasts, were behind the attack. In December 2012, an NIA team had questioned two youths from Kanachak in Jammu.

In the light of the NIA disclosures, a re-investigation was ordered, but it never took off because the J&K Police said that the original case file had been “stolen”.

Last month, special public prosecutor Rohini Salian had told The Indian Express that she was asked to “go soft” in the 2008 Malegaon blasts case by an NIA officer after the change of government at the Centre.

“The NIA asked for the evidence that we had collected from the spot immediately after the mosque grenade blasts,” a senior officer of the J&K Police said. He said he issued orders for a re-investigation, only to be told that the case file had been stolen from the police station. “A deputy superintendent of police was asked to investigate the theft,” he said.

No progress has been made since. “It’s in cold storage,” the officer said.

Director General of J&K Police K Rajendra said he was “surprised” when he got to know that the file was lost. He declined comment on the current status of the case.

PDP leader and J&K Revenue Minister Javaid Mustafa Mir, who was minister of state for power in 2004, was present in the mosque at the time of the attack. He said he knew who had hurled the grenades. “I know it very well. But what can I do about it?’’

As per the NIA, in a “disclosure statement”, Rajendra Chaudhary had said that in 2001 he had met Sunil Joshi, then a pracharak in Mhow, at Depalpur in Indore district of Madhya Pradesh. “Sunil Joshi… asked me to do something for Hindus and the country. I readily agreed to lay down my life for the Hindu cause. He said Hindus are facing atrocities in Kashmir due to Muslim terrorism… we both came to Jammu by train. We visited Vaishno Devi temple and thereafter Sunilji took me to a room near Purkhu village, Jammu. It was a big ground with a room where two persons, namely Chanderkant Patil and Dhan Singh of Hatod, were already staying,” Chaudhary allegedly told the NIA.

“Dhan Singh told me he had come to the camp around two months ago. Sunilji left Jammu after dropping me there. We, three, stayed in that room at Purkhu camp for about three months… Patil showed us two hand grenades kept in his suitcase and asked us to explode them. Along with Dhan Singh and Patil, I went to the mosque at Peer Meetha (around 15 km from our place) by bus. They told me to wait at the local bus stop and went to the mosque. After hurling grenades (I heard the sound of explosion), they both came running to the bus stand. I later came to know that due to that explosion, two persons had been killed and a few injured. Along with Dhan Singh, I returned to Indore, leaving Patil in Jammu,” Chaudhary reportedly said.

The NIA claimed that, in his statement, Dhan Singh said: “Along with Patil, I went to the masjid. After removing pins from the hand grenades, both of us threw hand grenades on the namazis… After that incident, I along with Rajendra came back to Indore and Patil stayed back.’’

According to the FIR lodged at the Peer Mitha police station, Abdul Rashid Khan, junior assistant in the law department, and Mohammad Shafi, junior assistant in the animal husbandry department — both from Natipora in Srinagar — were killed while 19 were injured when the two grenades were hurled.

The family of Abdul Rashid Khan couldn’t be traced but Asha Begum, mother of Mohammad Shafi, told The Indian Express: “We were told by police and the government that the attack was done by militants and was meant to kill a minister.”

She added, “It took me a long time to believe that my son was dead… I never took up the fight for him. I had no idea who to fight with, who to ask why they killed my son.”

ON 69th Anniversary of Independence Day: Unite to Save India from Hindutva

The 69th anniversary Of India’s Independence comes when democratic-secular polity of India is faced with a very critical crisis.

Now RSS cadres via BJP are ruling the country with organizations with the same heritage. The present ruling class is the product of the pre-Independence Hindutva politics which decried freedom movement (in fact, VD Savarkar as a prominent ideologue of the Hindutva camp and as a president of the Hindu Mahasabha ran coalition governments with the Muslim League during Quit India Movement of 1942 when Congress was banned, thousands were killed in police firings and whole India turned into a jail), like Muslim League believed in the two-nation theory, did not believe in all-inclusive nationalism and declared absolute faith in Casteism.

This ruling elite is different from all other parliamentary parties which at least normatively believed in democracy and secularism. It is committed for building a Hindu theocratic state, abrogate the democratic-secular Constitution of India and restore the Brahmanical golden Past.

What the true nature of these rulers is can be known by the way their past ideologues denigrated the Tricolour, the National Flag. Their shocking attitude is being reproduced here in which Tricolour is declared to be inauspicious, injurious and evil for the country.

We must take note of the serious challenge presented by the present regime which is waiting for an opportune movement to undo a democratic-secular India.

We have to rise up to crush those elements that were disloyal to the anti-colonial freedom struggle and want to play mischief with the heritage of our glorious freedom struggle.

KNOW THE RSS

INTRODUCTION

With ‘Swayamsevaks’ like Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Lal Krishan Advani in the drivers’ seats in the National Democratic Alliance Government at the Centre in India (1998-2004), the RSS accelerated its old favourite pastime of minority bashing in India.

Sarsanghchalak or Supreme Leader of the RSS, KS Sudershan while addressing a rally on the eve of 75th founding day of the RSS in Nagpur, called upon Muslims and Christians of the country to prove their patriotism. It is really atrocious that an organization, which was at least twice banned for anti-national activities by the Government of India after independence should pose as controlling authority of patriotism in the country.

Should we once again refresh the memory of the RSS bosses that their rabid communal organization was banned in 1948 for collaborating in the murder of Mahatma Gandhi, and in 1992 it was again banned for demolishing Babri mosque at Ayodhya? Do we also need to tell the RSS that misadventures like demolition of Babri mosque only served the strategic goals of the enemies of India like the ISI who wanted to see an India, fractured and at war with itself?

This is high time that the people of this country scrutinize the record (of patriotism and loyalty to the nation) of the RSS itself. Unfortunately, the RSS which is fond of demanding unwavering and unflinching loyalty to the Nation from minorities is neither loyal to the Constitution of India, nor to the National Flag.

RSS is an organization, which openly decries the existence of a democratic, federal and secular India which are the ‘Basic’ features of the Constitution of India. In fact, it has old heritage of worshipping dictators like Hitler. It is an organization which not only openly decried the Freedom Movement against the British rule but also made fun of the great martyrs like Bhagat Singh and his companions who laid down their lives for the liberation of the Motherland.

In order to know the truth we will simply have to make access to the literature and publications of the RSS specially the writings of Golwalkar (known as Guruji) who as a philosopher and guide is religiously followed by the bosses and cadres of the RSS. In this booklet we have presented fully the official viewpoints of the RSS on different aspects of Indian polity so that it cannot allege misrepresentation. We must know about the RSS today, as it is no more a fringe organization with the present BJP leaders declaring their open allegiance to the RSS. They have even told the Nation that RSS to them is what Gandhiji was to Nehru! It is a highly intriguing and dishonest parallel in the sense that Gandhiji was theoretically never disloyal to a democratic, secular and federal India.

We are publishing this booklet with the hope that this Nation gets familiarized to the real face and intentions of the RSS; otherwise it may be too late to save this country.

RSS is on a roll: Number of shakhas up 61% in 5 years

While there is no formal membership, an analysis of data on the number of shakhas conducted each year over the last five years shows a nearly 29% increase in daily shakhas, 61% increase in weekly shakhas and 40% growth in monthly shakhas across India from 2010-11 to 2014-15.

The trend is similar in cities like Mumbai, which have seen a 34% increase in the number of daily shakhas, while weekly shakhas have grown by over 70%. In the neighbouring township of Navi Mumbai, daily shakhas have more than doubled in five years.

The largest increase in shakhas across India over the last five years took place between 2013-14 and 2014-15.

It is tempting to attribute the high growth in RSS shakhas since 2013-14 to a change in government; BJP is part of the 38 ideological affiliates of RSS that form the Sangh Parivar.

In recent years, RSS shakha strength has increased as timings are adjusted to suit various age groups — students, working professionals and retired people. As part of its outreach, RSS befriends heads of various communities (for instance, the head of a blacksmith community in a particular area) and involves them in various social activities, gradually making inroads into the organization.

The organization is successful on social media, with over 15 lakh 'Likes' on its Facebook page and 1.5 lakh followers on Twitter. "Their Facebook page has some of the best graphic designers," says a youngster whose grandmother is with RSS. He says the organization has a network of WhatsApp groups and generates content for WhatsApp.

"The spread of RSS is being experienced not only in cities but in almost every tehsil and over 55,000 villages of our Bharat.

The Hindutva brigade’s hate campaign

This week we had a minister separating Indians as being either Ramzadas (meaning Hindus) or haramzadas, meaning bastards. The minister is one of the many illiterate and half-literate sadhvis (meaning a sort of self-anointed holy person without any clerical status), who have joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Another such is Uma Bharti, who according to her Lok Sabha resume, has studied up to class six.

The minister who made the haramzada remark was initially surprised to know people felt she had said anything wrong. When the media climbed into her, she gave a mumbled statement of regret. This sort of nasty language is commonly used by the Hindutva parties to rally their base, as I shall show later. When the media picked up the issue, the opposition brought it to parliament. Arun Jaitley, one of the few BJP men who is uncomfortable with Hindutva, disowned the statement and condemned it. Jaitley is politically unimportant and cannot even win his own seat. The prime minister, who knows the mood of the Hindutva base, did not respond immediately. He knows that such signaling is important. He leaked a report through his preferred agency — ANI — that he had said at a closed-door meeting that people should watch what they say, which is as oblique as a condemnation can get.

The Hindu wrote in an editorial that “if the prime minister is indeed shocked at the Sadhvi’s choice of words, he should have said so explicitly instead of couching his reprimand in generalities. If he intended to get his no-nonsense message across to his ministers and MPs, the right course for him would have been to drop Niranjan Jyoti from the Ministry. Criticising the actions without criticising the actor does not go far enough. Actually, the apology seems to have been offered to deflect the attacks of the opposition parties who were demanding her resignation.”

The opposition had spotted Modi’s error and pressed its advantage. Modi then came to parliament and said such things should not be said by anyone and that took the sting off the issue as far as the media was concerned. The question is, why do those who speak in the name of Hindutva say such things and why are they not condemned properly?

During the election campaign, Giriraj Singh, an unknown BJP candidate, came into prominence by saying: “Woh log Narendra Modi ko rokna chahate hain, woh Pakistan dekh rahe hain. Aane wale dino mein aise logon ke liye jagah Hindustan mein nahi, Jharkhand mein nahi, parantu Pakistan mein hoga, Pakistan mein hoga (Those who want to stop Narendra Modi are looking to Pakistan for support. In the coming days, there won’t be place for such people in India, in Jharkhand because their place will be in Pakistan).”

Around the same time, a tape was leaked of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Pravin Togadia talking at a meeting in Gujarat. He was offering advice to a Hindu neighbourhood where a Dawoodi Bohra, one of the most peaceful and prosperous communities of India, had bought a property. Bohras are wealthy and prefer to live in the more affluent urban areas, which tend to be Hindu. The neighbourhood that had called Togadia for advice did not want the Bohra family. Togadia told them they ought to create an atmosphere of a riot and spit on the family to get them to move out of a property they had legally bought. This was recorded on video and there was no ambiguity in what was being planned.

As I said, both these things happened around the same time. The media was incensed and Modi responded by putting out this general tweet: “Petty statements by those claiming to be BJP’s well-wishers are deviating the campaign from the issues of development and good governance.”

Modi later made Giriraj a minister, showing us what he actually believed. The RSS similarly lied about Togadia, saying there might be some misunderstanding (I translated the thing in full for livemint.com and it is totally transparent) for those who did not speak Gujarati. Togadia remains VHP’s international president.

The reason is that, despite their mumbled half-condemnations, Modi and the RSS approve of such statements and inevitably reward the people who make them. And this of course is because a large part of India responds favourably to them, despite the media’s anguish.

The real reason for the Patel mess: RSS's mission to abolish reservation

The Patels are supposed to be economically and socially developed

If the Patels demand reservation, it also flies in the face of the PM' claims of a developed Gujarat
There's a chance the main reason behind the agitation is the RSS's intent to abolish reservation

But the question that naturally crops up is, does such an influential community really need reservations in government jobs and educational institutions?

If the answer is 'yes', then the Patels' agitation can be said to be based purely on economic reasons.

But a negative reply paves the way for several other possibilities, including doubts about the agitation being sponsored or engineered by some others for a different purpose altogether.

More significantly, a demand for reservation by a community known to be financially well-off and socially influential actually shakes the foundation of the tall claims of Gujarat having been developed during Modi's tenure as CM.

Modi's critics as well as the general people could ask - 'what is the development all about if the most economically influential community has to seek reservations in government jobs'?

The demand hardly makes sense, given the economic and social influence of the Patel community in Gujarat

The RSS factor

All these factors nearly conclusively prove that there is no economic logic behind the community's demand for quotas in jobs and professional courses.

And, more importantly, for the last two decades, the community has been the BJP's strongest base, providing logistics, manpower, money and huge infrastructure for all the extravagant shows of the saffron party and its 'vibrant' government.

Would the Patels really like to rock their favourite party's boat at a time when "their man" is at the helm of affairs at the Centre ? This tricky question can be answered by a closer look at the slogans the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti is using while demanding reservations.

The second part of the slogan insists that if reservation cannot be given to Patels, then the quota system should be abolished altogether - which has been on the not-so-hidden agenda of the BJP's parent organisation, the RSS.

Such an aspersion appears to be true if one looks at the message that started being circulated on social media within an hour of the end of the Patels' rally. A message circulating on WhatsApp since the evening of 25 August exhorts the recipient to sign a petition asking the Prime Minister to "remove the caste-based reservation system".

Thus, if the purpose of the Patel rally was to generate a nation-wide debate to abolish the reservation system altogether, it has been well served.

Hardik Patel may not even be aware that he is being used as a puppet, but the Sangh Parivar's hidden agenda for ending all caste-based reservations has come to the fore.

No wonder, along with masks of Sardar Patel and white caps with the legend "I am Patidar", some of the Patels also carried triangular saffron flags, possibly to indicate that their umbilical cord with the BJP's parent organisation has not been snapped.

Even in style and modus operandi, the logistics of the Patels' rally had all the similarities with yet another one of the BJP's extravagant shows of strength.
