OVER 7 YEARS AND $3 MILLION EQUALS AN UNFINISHED MARKUZ IN EDMONTON, CANADA
Years ago Edmonton Jamaat was administered from Toronto by the Head Amil there. Raza, appointments of Amil, etc. was handled by him. The arrangements were cordial and things worked smoothly. For Ramadhan and Muharram Amils were brought in to lead prayers and conduct Waez.
What Edmonton Jamaat hoped as a direct link with Kothar turned out to be its biggest misfortune. This was the posting in Edmonton of one the sons-in-law of Mukasir Saheb, a pediatrician by profession. He comes from a wealthy family in the Far East area where it has a shipping business. His wife, Mukasir Saheb’s daughter wields power from behind the throne. This person started running the Jamaat affairs in his own authoritative abrasive manner. He has direct contact with those in power in Mumbai. He forms committees of local ‘yes’ men to run the Jamaat affairs but most decisions are dictated by him quoting directives from higher sources. Over the years he has continued to increase Wajebaat, Sabil, Salaams of Dais, Imams and so on. As usual with any Jamaat, Edmonton has its share of members with deep pockets and also with deep aquida - (Chamchagiri), who keep buttering up the son-in-law. Many of them are’ayaans’ and get nominated to committees but lack the backbone to oppose or voice their opinions.
Amils are imported from India on contract to conduct namaaz, majlis, run madrassa, etc. but overall control is maintained by the son-in-law. Amils were observed to be unhappy; a couple of them at times confided their feelings but were unable to do any more than that.. The last Amil tried to be bold but was harassed so much that on revolt he was transferred to a small town in Maharashtra.
To sum things up, the son-in-law has “Qoum nu satya nash wari didhu che. Eni juhukmi ane dadagiri thi manaso toba pukari gaya che.”
At present functions take place in leased spaces in industrial areas. In the last few years there has been a steady increase of Bohras migrating to Edmonton making it difficult to accommodate people, particularly during Moharram and Ramadhan. As the need for a masjid became more critical it was decided to launch a fund-raising campaign to build a Markuz.
It so happened that a medical professional (an ayaan) in the community had an ‘engineer’ brother. He was employed to supervise the construction of the Markuz. It became known that he was not an engineer. He might have undertaken some projects where he migrated from. He is not licensed in Canada and as has no knowledge of building construction business. In fact he runs a food kiosk in the University Mall.
The Markuz, under construction, is located in an industrial area of Edmonton. Fund raising and construction started more than seven years ago but the Markuz is still not completed. Close to $3 million dollars have been sunk in this project that reflects its unfinished state at the present. At one time the contracting company legally sued the community to recover outstanding arrears.
Over the years piecemeal construction has taken place. Outside painting is peeling and bleaching, stair entrances are eroding, no landscaping has been done, interior, sanitary and electrical work is contantly being redone to comply with bylaws; all resulting in extra costs.
Many suspect misappropriation of funds combined with the use of sub-par material, hiring tradespeople with minimal experience and so on. One day Edmonton will have a Markuz. As for now the community is being drained of funds in the guise of Wajebaat, Sabil, Salaams destined to the two litigants and their heirs. Funds that are direly needed to complete the Markuz.
