At a Berlin church, Muslim refugees converting in droves

Mohammed Ali Zonoobi bends his head as the priest pours holy water over his black hair. "Will you break away from Satan and his evil deeds?" pastor Gottfried Martens asks the Iranian refugee. "Will you break away from Islam?"

"Yes," Zonoobi fervently replies. Spreading his hands in blessing, Martens then baptizes the man "in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost."

Mohammed is now Martin - no longer Muslim, but Christian.

Zonoobi, a carpenter from the Iranian city of Shiraz, arrived in Germany with his wife and two children five months ago. He is one of hundreds of mostly Iranian and Afghan asylum seekers who have converted to Christianity at the evangelical Trinity Church in a leafy Berlin neighborhood.

Like Zonoobi, most say true belief prompted their embrace of Christianity. But there's no overlooking the fact that the decision will also greatly boost their chances of winning asylum by allowing them to claim they would face persecution if sent home.

Martens recognises that some convert in order to improve their chances of staying in Germany - but for the pastor motivation is unimportant. Many, he said, are so taken by the Christian message that it changes their lives. And he estimates that only about 10 percent of converts do not return to church after christening.

"I know there are - again and again - people coming here because they have some kind of hope regarding their asylum," Martens said. "I am inviting them to join us because I know that whoever comes here will not be left unchanged."

Being Christian alone does not help an applicant, and Chancellor Angela Merkel went out of her way this week to reiterate that Islam "belongs in Germany." But in Afghanistan and Iran, for example, conversion to Christianity by a Muslim could be punished by death or imprisonment, and it is therefore unlikely that Germany would deport converted Iranian and Afghan refugees back home.

None will openly admit to converting in order to help their asylum chances. To do so could result in rejection of their asylum bid and deportation as Christian converts. Several candidates for baptism at Martens' church would not give their names out of fear of repercussions for their families back home.

Most said their decision was based on belief, but one young Iranian woman said she was convinced most people had joined the church only to improve their chances for asylum.

Congregation member Vesam Heydari initially applied for asylum in Norway and converted there in 2009. But his case was rejected because the Norwegian authorities did not believe he would be persecuted as a Christian in Iran, so he moved to Germany to seek refugee status here _ and is awaiting a decision. He criticized many of the other Iranian church members, saying they were making it much harder for "real, persecuted Christians" like himself to get approved for asylum.

"The majority of Iranians here are not converting out of belief," Heydari said. "They only want to stay in Germany."

Meanwhile, as other churches across Germany struggle with dwindling numbers of believers, Martens has seen his congregation swell from 150 just two years to more than 600 parishioners now - with a seemingly unending flow of new refugees finding the way to his congregation. Some come from cities as far away as Rostock on the Baltic Sea, having found out by word-of-mouth that Martens not only baptizes Muslims after a three-month "crash course" in Christianity, but also helps them with asylum pleas.

Other Christian communities across Germany, among them Lutheran churches in Hannover and the Rhineland, have also reported growing numbers of Iranians converting to Christendom. There are no exact numbers on how many Muslims have converted in Germany in recent years _ and they are a tiny minority compared to the country's overall 4 million Muslims. But at least for Berlin, Martens describes the number of conversions as nothing short of a "miracle". And he says he has at least another 80 people - mostly refugees from Iran and a few Afghans - waiting to be baptized.

Germany is witnessing an unprecedented surge of asylum-seekers this year, with the number of migrants expected to reach 800,000 this year, a fourfold increase on last year.

Many of the new arrivals come from Muslim countries such as Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan or Pakistan. While refugees from civil-war-torn Syria will almost definitely be receiving asylum status, the situation is more complicated for asylum seekers from Iran or Afghanistan, which are seen as more stable. In recent years, roughly 40-50 percent from those two countries have been allowed to stay in the country, with many of those getting only temporary permission to remain.

Germany's Federal Office for Migration and Refugees said it does not comment on the reasons individual applicants give when they apply for asylum, or on how many people receive refugee status in Germany based on religious persecution.

Zonoobi, who dressed all in white for his baptism on Sunday, said he had attended secret religious services in Iran ever since friends introduced him to the Bible at age 18. He decided to flee to Germany after several Christian friends were arrested for practicing their religion.

For Zonoobi and his wife Afsaneh - who since her baptism goes by the name of Katarina - the christening marks a new beginning.

"Now we are free and can be ourselves," she said. "Most important, I am so happy that our children will have a good future here and can get a good education in Germany."

When Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990, fellow Gulf states raced to shelter thousands of displaced Kuwaitis. Fast forward 25 years, and the homeless from Syria's nearby war have found scant refuge in the Arab world's richest states.

For critics of the Gulf's affluent monarchies the contrast is profoundly unflattering, especially as several are backers of the combatants in Syria's conflict, so must, they argue, shoulder a special responsibility for its consequences.

The wrenching image of a Syrian Kurdish refugee boy drowned on a Turkish beach has stoked debate in Europe. The official silence of Gulf Arab dynasties makes many Gulf citizens uneasy.

Paintings and cartoons of the young boy's death crowded Arab social media, one depicting little Aylan Kurdi's corpse laid out before an open grave with inert figures in traditional Gulf Arab cloaks and robes holding shovels.

Another showed the three-year old's head slumped toward a tombstone marked "the Arab conscience".

Sara Hashash of rights group Amnesty International called the Gulf Arab states' behaviour "utterly shameful" and criticised Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates for officially taking in zero refugees.

Turkey hosts almost 2 million, tiny Lebanon over a million and other restive and poor neighbours hundreds of thousands.

The Gulf states' supporters say the numbers involved in Syria's crisis are vastly larger than in Kuwait's case. They point to the funding Gulf states have given to aid efforts in countries neighbouring Syria.

"Qatar is very small and already donating to refugees in Jordan, Turkey and northern Iraq. For logistical reasons Qatar cannot take in large numbers of refugees so instead Qatar chooses to support them financially," said Abdullah Al-Athbah, editor in chief of Arab Newspaper.

But sympathy for Syria's refugees is on the rise.

"It gives us a glimmer of hope after these recent drowning episodes to see broad campaigns of sympathy and solidarity with the issue of Syrian refugees by governments and peoples in some European countries," wrote Zeid al-Zeid in a column for Kuwait's Al-An newspaper on Sunday.

"But it makes us sorry and makes us wonder about the absence of any official response by Arab states ... we're seeing a silence that's scandalous."

Sultan Sooud al Qassemi, a commentator in the United Arab Emirates, said he suspected Gulf States were wary of allowing in large numbers of politically vocal Arabs who might somehow influence a traditionally passive society. But he said Gulf states should open their doors to the refugees.

"The Gulf states often complain that the Arabic language is underused and that our culture is under threat due to the large number of foreign immigrants," al Qassemi said.

"Here is an opportunity to host a group of people who can help alleviate such concerns and are in need of refuge, fleeing a brutal war."

One Kuwaiti analyst, a regular fixture on pan-Arab news shows, raised hackles by saying in a television interview last week that refugees were better suited to poorer countries, failing to acknowledge the pledges of rich European countries like Germany to take in many thousands.

"Gulf countries clearly can and should do an awful lot more," said Oxfam's Syria country director Daniel Gorevan.

He called on Gulf states to "offer up work places, family unification schemes, essentially other legal avenues for them to get into Gulf countries and to be able to earn a living."

In Arab states beyond the Gulf, there is immense sympathy for Syrians, but mixed views on the feasibility of helping.

"Tunisia is not able to welcome any refugees. We cannot accept Syrian refugees. After the revolution of 2011, Tunisia was the first to pay the price in terms of refugees. We have welcomed 1.2 million Libyans and that has cost us a lot," Boujemaa Rmili, a spokesman for the Nidaa Tounes party which forms part of the governing coalition.

Migrants from Syria and Sahel countries into Algeria are estimated at 55,000, a source from Algeria's red crescent told Reuters. "We have done what we can to offer them the basics including food, medicine, host centres, and we have allowed the Syrian kids to study in our schools," the source said.

HOSPITALITY?

Gulf officials and those defending Gulf policies say the outrage overlooks the billions donated to Syrian refugee camps abroad and the delicate demographics of countries where expatriate workers already nearly outnumber locals.

"Qatar has provided over $2 billion in aid to the Syrian people in addition to the $106 million provided by Qatar's semi-governmental institutions," a Qatari diplomat said.

Others felt Gulf states should go further.

"(The Gulf) should accept Syrian refugees. Saudis and Syrians have always been brothers and sisters. Aside from the fact that our religion requires us to do so, helping refugees should be a natural reaction to what we have seen in the media," 22-year old Saudi student Noor Almulla said.

Another Saudi student, Sara Khalid, 23, said Gulf Arab states "as their neighbours and fellow Muslims" had a greater responsibility to Syrian refugees than Europeans.

While none of the Gulf Arab states have signed onto key global agreements defining refugee status and imposing responsibilities on countries to grant asylum, the United Nations Refugee Agency praised the Gulf's "hospitality."

"The six GCC governments continue to respect international standards with regards to protecting refugees," especially in not repatriating them back to their war-torn homes, Nabil Othman, the UNHCR's representative in the Gulf told Reuters.

While authorities generally apply "humanitarian considerations" to those overstaying their visas, Othman said work or local sponsorship still mostly defined residency status.

Foreign workers outnumber locals five to one in the UAE and Qatar, where well-heeled European families and South Asian workers are omnipresent while long-robed citizens are rare. Refugee camps are, and will likely remain, non-existent.

"The numbers of foreigners are overwhelming. Here we have 90 percent - do you want to turn local people into minorities in their own countries? They already are, but to do it really?" said UAE Abdulkhaleq Abdulla, a political scientist.

Over the decades, Saudi Arabia has become home to around half a million Syrians and the UAE to over 150,000, and the welcome extended to these and other expat professionals has helped fuel a boom in Gulf economies.

But since the unrest and wars unleashed by the Arab Spring pro-democracy uprisings in 2011, those governments have adopted a stricter line on accepting Palestinians, Syrians and Shi'ite Muslims - a sign of just how much the rich and stable Gulf ruled by absolute monarchs is wary of importing political contagions.

Iyad al-Baghdadi, a Palestinian blogger and activist deported from the UAE last year, has criticized the response of the Gulf states and laments the closed borders and repression.

Recalling time spent in a Norwegian refugee camp with Syrian refugee friends, he said on Twitter: "Something about this felt absolutely alien - three grown Arab Muslim men who were made homeless and are seeking refuge in... Scandinavia."

"The Arab world is 5 million square miles. When my son was born, among the worst thoughts was how it has no space for him.

Europe will be creating trouble for itself if these refugees and the ones before them from Muslim countries are not kept on TIGHT LEASH. Forget secularism for a change and be strict with dress and civil codes so that they do not end up demanding special privileges and Sharia Law down the line

German people all so happy and warmly welcoming them. Wait for 20 years when they start demanding Sharia Law. Until then these people won't understand that this is a plague.

For these countries ..Islam is just to fool people.. they can finance terrorists by millions of Dollars.. but here waiting for Europe to take refuges.
Arab nations are equally responsible for conflicts in middle east and should bear the responsibility of Muslim refugees. they are unfit to live in 2015AD secular societies, they demand all the good from the secular nations but finally won't hesitate to declare Jihad and start slaughtering, and raping innocent fellow countrymen, women and kids!! they only know blaming west and that also when they are living in west. they dont know what is gratitude, Europe must deport them to Islamic nations rather than inviting Islamic menace!!

dear QM

calm down bro, other than few opportunist migrants from economically weak countries, most of them are really troubled and displaced people of syria. running away from mindless violence in thier country .. one can stay and fight inflation, economic stagnation, protest and make a difference. but cannot argue in front of the mad monkeys of ISIS who are bent on spreading terror.

GCC countries are in-secured, not intelligent enough to handle the influx of refugees and protect thier countries against hidden threats that refugees bring along amidst them. their routine lives are run by expats .. how can they manage such international crisis on their soil. thier security agencies are trained limited to handle simple and submissive expats living under thier rule. they can dish out millions in the name of cooperation and humanity. putting efforts is a herculean task they are not prepared for.

THE picture of a Palestinian-Syrian man selling pens along a street in Beirut shook the civilized world, as he held the pens in one hand and used the other hand to carry his worn out daughter who was sleeping on his shoulder. An Icelander uploaded the picture on various social networking sites, appealing to all those sympathizing with the Syrian refugee to make donations for him. The picture shook the hearts of people throughout the world, except the Arabs and sons of Islam!

The sons of modern humanitarian civilizations called on each other and they collected $80,000. These non-Muslims, whom some sons of Islam call as ‘unbelievers’, broadcasted a campaign to search for the man in Beirut until they found him. The pen seller cried while he was receiving money from the ‘unbelievers’. In addition, he promised to give some of the money to the needy who are in the same situation as his.

The story was published recently by our local newspapers quoting western newspapers. I could not help but feel ashamed when I read the story, because those who are called ‘unbelievers’ have proven that they are more committed to the teachings and principles of Islam than its own sons.

Islam is a religion of mercy, harmony and tolerance. Yet, we are troubled by some individuals who have adopted corrupt ideas and converted Islam into a religion of murder. According to their wrong interpretations, arrest, displacement and unprecedented cruelty are acts that they should be proud of. They are proud of what they have been doing against their brothers and sisters without feeling mercy. They usually exclaim, “The Great God”, at the end of every heinous act despite the fact that Allah renounced such inhumane deeds!

I remember what a person, who belongs to a bad group, committed against the Iraqi and Syrian nations, as he was proud of what he did. One of those devilish groups is proud of slaughtering a family composed of a father and his children, while pledging to slaughter other people who belong to the slaughtered father’s sect. He even described the manner of slaughtering, from vein to vein, using a knife with a smile on his face! Another one from the same oppressive group explained to us how he armed thousands of Syrian fighters using the money of Kuwait’s people to let them slaughter each other! Moreover, we saw money being thrown like waste in tribal tents or diwaniyas for the same purpose

Hundreds of these refugees are dying daily as they try to escape from the inferno of the Syrian civil war heading towards the European paradise of ‘unbelievers’ in Germany, Austria, etc

Well just on a side note, which will also give you enough to think about why Iranians in particular are willing to leave Islam altogether.

Have you ever thought why any non Muslim who converts, almost always converts to Sunni form of Islam and never becomes a Shia or a Ithna Ashari or a Bohri for instance.

Quite simple really. because Sunni Muslims account for close to 85 to 90% of followers of Islam so they are considered as mainstream. Simple when you think about it
