Dawoodi Bohras celebrate Syedna’s 92nd b'day

MUMBAI: The city’s Dawoodi Bohra community will celebrate the 92nd birthday of Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin on Friday by offering floral tributes to the leader at the Raudat Tahera mausoleum in Bhendi Bazar.



The celebrations, which began across the world 40 days ago, will culminate in London, where the Syedna will bestow benedictions on community members.



Dawoodi Bohras at over 700 centres across the world have also undertaken projects designed to “enhance social and economic progress’’.



For the Syedna’s 92nd birthday, community members have helped out 9,200 needy families, it was stated. Apart from spreading the Syedna’s message of loyalty to the nation and of peace, members of the community have conducted several vocational training programmes. Financial assistance has also been provided to the needy.



Other programmes have included medical camps and health seminars held during the run-up period to his birthday.



Fruits and flowers were distributed to patients in hospitals and low-cost housing schemes and environmental projects are under way.

I would certainly be interested in any information about these 9200 families.

I wonder how many of them are actually sub-families amongst the khotar themselves?

With the exception of very few conscientious newspapers every newspaper had published paid advertisements on the Birthday of Bohra Height Priest. The full page paid advertisement appeared even in the paper like New York Times. Needless to say it cost fortune to advertise in New York Times and that too for full page paid advertisement. Such publicity stunt are done word-wide. This is not new. Every year crores of rupees are spend on such publicity.

But it was a shocking surprise that an esteem newspaper like Times of India, which has an international repute, published the news article on 20th June and again on 21 June with the content fed by Sayedna’s establishment.

The religious leaders like Pope Paul, Agakhan, Shanker Acharya, Maulana Abul Hasan Nadvi, Maulana Kalbe Sadiq and Maulana Wahiduddin Khan never find need to celebrate their birthdays at this scale and never spend so much money on advertising their personalities because their work speak for them. Where as in the case of the Dawoodi Bohra Head huge advertisements are given with photographs of Bohra head meeting with world political leaders and with general and vague statements about projects of social and economic enhancement, monitory help to Bohras, vocational training programs, low-cast housings etc. But no details are ever provided, as these are baseless statements made in order to enhance his image in public eyes without doing anything positive. Anyone can make such vague statements.

In fact there are serious charges of extortion of money from the community by his establishment. Also two inquiry commissions’ reports have established beyond any doubt that there is a large-scale infringement of human rights of Dawoodi Bohras in the name of the high priest. The Times of India had written editorial calling it “An Obnoxious Practice” (July 24 1985). Several such editorials and articles were written by your paper exposing the inhuman persecution of Bohras by Sayedna’s regime. We are thankful to you that you have always supported the cause of reform in our community whole-heartedly.

Based on the reports of Justice Nathwani and Justice Tewatia Commissions of inqury a review petition in the Supreme court has been filed by the Central Board to review its order of 1962 in which the then high priest had managed to get exemption from 'Prevention of Ex-communication Act 1984.

In Gujarat earthquake and again in the recent Gujarat carnage the Dawoodi Bohras have suffered the most. But no help has been given to these sufferers. Instead a farman was issued in which Bohras were instructed that they should not accept any help from any government or private agencies. The Bohras were even prohibited to appear in front of Justice Nanavati Commission.

The persecuted Bohras are agitating at number of places against these oppressive policies of Bohra religious establishment. Ujjain is the latest example where several Dawoodi Bohras recently agitated openly with banners and play-cards sitting right in front of the residence of Sayedna's local agent (Dainik Bhaskar 2 May, 2003). The violent fight is going on even in Sayedna's own family (Front page story in Mid Day 9May, 2003).

Many such inquiries are going on in USA, UK, Canada and Sri Lanka.

The Reformist Bohras precisely object to such misuse of community's money and also the use of Religion for persecution and extortion. What is use of honorary degrees and titles, constructions of huge marble mausoleums and gala celebrations, when thousands of followers are living below poverty line in hutments of Santacruz and Jugeshwari, in Bombay itself ,Your"s Sincerely-----
