"Muslims don’t need crutches of quota’ " BY Manjari Mishra l TNN

Lucknow: Maulana Kalbe Sadiq, Shia cleric and vicepresident of All India Muslim Personal Law Board, created a flutter when he announced at a public forum that Muslims did not need reservation.
At a majlis on Sunday in Bara Banki, 30 km from Lucknow, he said, “Koi bhi qaum baisakhion ke sahare hamesha nahin chal sakti...usme jaan paida karni hogi (No community can move forward on crutches...we need to instil life into it).’’ And, this can be done only by introducing Muslims to modern education, he said.
The maulana has never been shy of courting controversies. His advice to Muslims on family planning and insistence on announcing Eid well in advance going by the lunar calendar instead of waiting for the actual moonsighting has earned him many detractors.
Speaking to TOI, he said, “I don’t want to offend anyone, but I am not afraid to air my opinion either. Muslim reservation cannot and will not prove beneficial in the long run. The Muslim leadership is responsible for illiteracy and backwardness of the community.’’
He added, “Muslim leaders should now atone for their sins by promoting literacy, creating better avenues for jobs and improving their lot instead of harping on issues like reservation,’’ he said.
Sadiq, president of Tauheedul Muslimeen Trust which runs a chain of educational institutes and also provides free education to 3,000 children, said there is no dearth of money. “Grant of crores of rupees flowing in from abroad must not be wasted on madrassas but used in setting up schools. Muslim children must be encouraged to study,’’ he said.
He further said, “We need to introspect why Muslims are employed as labourers and minions in Doha and Qatar, whereas their Hindu brethren occupy top slots in the same companies.’’
