Jazakallah o khair. Please send it to admin and he would publish it in litrature section permenantly. This is a great task you have completed and this would add more understanding of the real marthiya and its meaning to common bohra.

I have alreay started forwarding this to my family and friends and I would like to congratulate you on this achievement.

I had thought of providing an Intrduction to the marthiya, ya sayyid_as-shuhadaa:i, but I decided that Bohras need no introduction to it. It is generally recited in almost all Majlis-type gatherings.

The author of the marthiya is Sayedna Taher Saifuddin, the 51st Dai al-Mutlaq and appropriately contains 51 verses. Sayedna Muhammad Burhanuddin’s similar marthiya, “fulku_l-Husaini bi-karbalaa:i”, contains 52 verses.

This translation is offered as almost word-to-word translation. I have not tried to re-create the solemnity and nuances that the original Arabic has. Indeed, I cannot re-create it.The verses describe well-known events and most of the nuances are familiar and can be provided by the reader.

One must admire the author’s mastery of Arabic. He uses the rules of versification effectively. It is not poetry but I believe it to be a genre of Arabic versification called saj’, سجع.

A particular example is his effective use of the same or similarly sounding words with different meanings to maintain the rhythm and rhyme. In verse 9, the letter Saad, ص , in line 3 refers to the Quranic name of the Prophet; and in line 4, the word Saad, صاد, means thirst.

One cannot fail to notice that different words are used to describe the same ideas repeatedly. However, this is quite common in a marthiya.

I hope that this document may generate some discussion.

Dear brother Porus,
Please you get the latest version of Misaq text (Arabic or Gujarati) and translate it English. Brother aqs can help us in getting the text. We, especially Udaipur reformists have demanding it through letters and newspaper from higher-ups in Kothar but there is no response so far from them.

I can then post the English translation of 'Original' Misaq, Aihd-ul-Aulia from historian Miqrizi's book.

br aqs

let me ask you a simple question if ahdul awliyah is the same ahad which is taken from momeen from generations and no alteration is made in this ahad and if it is so authenticate then why dont they hand over a copy of this misaaq to ever individual who gives this ahad?

I have seen many converts(through marriages) who have taken this oath and they were just told to say NAAM when ever amil says NAAM,they were not even told what this naam is and why this oath is taken.

More than half of new generation of DB in USA do not understand Dawat-e-Lissan forget about Arabic, why not state those in local language and then follow up with Lissan-e-Dawat or Arabic, All these youngsters in USA are like parrot (even some older folks from Africa have no idea of Lissan or Arabic either)they just say it because they are told and that is one of the reasons that as soon as these youngsters in America come of age, they just drift away from religion. It is my observation in our local jamaat and also talking to friends in different Jamaat
BTW same problem in Sunni/Shia Masjid where they insisted on giving Khutbas in Urdu or Arabic and finally they came to their senses and started Muharram Majaalis in English and Friday sermons (1st Khutab) in English and that is how they are keep people engaged.

Porus,

I'm returing to your original posting and saying thank you very much for this
fantastic, academic, brilliant piece of work. It's clear you spent a great deal of time on this -
your knowledge of Arabic is evident. I say we start giving away free copies outside
of every Bohra majlis, function, darees, blah, blah. . .. . ..

Thankx again,
Safiuddin

Thank you for the compliments but let us not go overboard with such praises. After all, it is only a translation! Brilliance is due to the original author in his rendering of Arabic constructs.

Please download the latest edition by clicking the link in Admin's post above. I have corrected some typographical errors and added an Introduction and a Table of Contents. The Introduction includes an explanation of the background behind Ali ibn Abi Talib's designation of Ameer an-Nahl (Prince of Bees) in verse 45.

I am still finding typographical errors and I will update the document in due course. However, I wish to correct a minor grammatical error in verse 21, the translation of which should read as follows:

"alas for the betrothal,
at the time of the battle,
of pure(Abdullah) with pure(Sakina);
the weeping bride causing the groom to weep
as he goes into battle
alas, O Husain
O Leader of the Martyrs"

Br. Oma,
I understand your concern but the case with Bohras is different in comparison to other communities, Language is one of the symbols of our community and it cant be discarded for people who dont understand it. Misaaq is a very important part of a Mumin's life and if some one has difficulty in understanding the language they should approach the local aamil and he should be more then willing to make the person understand.

During my visit to Mecca, the local amil gave waaz in Arabic language to suit the yemeni bohras who do not speak lasan E dawat. There is no yard stick as such.... I agree with brother oma.. Amil should use the local language in order to engage young/old bohras. Otherwise people are just sitting there and playing with your mobile phone.
