Reformist Dawoodi Bohras pray for Sayedna’s health

As is widely known, Sayedna Mohammed Burhanuddin was admitted into an ICU in Saifee Hospital in Mumbai on 12 or 13 March, 2009. Sayedna Saheb is 97 years old and his latest hospitalization has created quite an emotional stir in the community prompting the clergy to ask Bohras to perform all kinds of rituals and rites for his quick recovery.

As is common with our community, everything is done in excess. This was no exception. With orders from the local jamaat Bohras have been undertaking all kinds of silly and not-so-silly things to pray for Sayedna Saheb’s good health and prolong his already considerably long life. So much so that the whole thing has been turned into a public (and media) spectacle, exposing the community once again to ridicule.

For reformist Dawoodi Bohras in Udaipur and around the world it was different. They were saddened by Sayedna Saheb’s illness but their response was one of calm dignity. On April 3, 2009 Dawoodi Bohra Jamaat and Bohra Youth Association in Udaipur organized a majlis to pray for his quick recovery and good health. About 3,500 reformist men, women and children took part in the majlis. Mulla Peer Ali recited from the Quran and Dawoodi Bohra Jamaat’s president Abid Ali Adib addressed the gathering. The majlis was short but solemn and sincere – just the way it should be.
