Can anyone on this board throw some light as to why the Ithna Asheris use the Turbat (which they call it sajdaga) to do a sajda during the prayers.

was this a practice during the imams?

Since the formation of the world, the Prophets were sent and the time period between two Prophets, there were wasis/imams who guided the people.

There is no single time the the world is devoid of them ie., either Prohpet/Wasi/Imam.

The purpose of sending the prophets was to bring the laws to the people and it needs an agency (In the form of an imam ) to execute the laws.
so, Imam is basically an exectioner of the laws brought by the prophets.
