Babri Mosque Demolition:
Why On December 6?

Was it a mere coincidence that the Babri mosque was demolished on December 6? Of course, there are strong reasons to believe that the event was not an act of spontaneous mob frenzy but rather an outcome of a high-level conspiracy. No wonder the issue was utilised by the Sangha Parivar to generate communal euphoria across the length and breadth of the country. Moreover, this euphoria was manufactured and nourished sequentially and saw its logical culmination in the ultimate levelling of the mosque. However, the pertinent question is: what drove the saffron forces to chose this particular date for their heinous act? What was so exceptional about this particular date that it overrode all other options in the 366 days of that year (1992 being a leap year)? A scrutiny of this question, I posit, would unveil the true character of Hindu communalism or Hindutva.

Advani must be tried for Babri Masjid conspiracy: CBI to SC

NEW DELHI: The CBI has told the Supreme Court that it was not only against dropping of conspiracy charges against BJP leader L K Advani in the Babri Masjid demolition case but also wanted him and other leaders to face trial along with the accused kar sevaks.

In the demolition incident, two FIRs were lodged. FIR No. 197/92 was against kar sevaks who allegedly demolished the mosque while FIR No. 198/92 had named Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Uma Bharti, Vinay Katiyar, Ashok Singhal, Giriraj Kishore, Vishnu Hari Dalmiya and Sadhvi Rithambara for making provocative speeches to instigate kar sevaks.

The investigations by CBI had disclosed that there was a single larger conspiracy to demolish the disputed structure on December 12, 1992 and various accused so charged in the consolidated chargesheet in all the 49 cases played their own roles in achieving the object of the said criminal conspiracy.

"As and when the domes fell, the accused leaders and others on the manch celebrated the same by clapping, hugging each other and distributed sweets on the manch which was at a visible distance of 175 metres from the disputed structure.

*Babri Demolition: Two Decades Later*

Ram Puniyani

Twenty years ago (December 6, 1992) on this fateful day, Babri Mosque was demolished. This demolition remains a major blot in the history of India. It was the act of demolition by communal forces which reflected the changing polity of India and it in turn further changed the polity in a very adverse direction. Liberhan Commission showed that it was a pre-planned act orchestrated by Sangh Parivar, which gloated over it and celebrated it as Hindu Shaurya Diwas (Hindu Bravery Day). RSS combine and many an ideologues sympathizing with its ideology projected and are projecting this demolition as a major act of Nation building! While those committed to democracy and secularism see this day as a day which shamed Indian democracy; secularism and opened the floodgates of further communal polarization in a very intense way. What emerged from this tragic day was the strengthening of communal forces due to which BJP emerged as the major party at electoral level, which further communalized our culture into a narrow sectarian one. The values of divisiveness and intolerance towards weaker sections grew further.

While the communal forces led the onslaught, the so called secular party, the Congress did everything to let the things go on, as a passive onlooker or an active colluder. Congress failed to protect the mosque and showed its week knees to the extent that many started equating Congress with BJP. It started being said that what BJP does openly during the day Congress does it covertly, by the night. These two major parties have ruled the Indian political space. In this BJP is programmatically communal and Congress is opportunistically communal. Not to be left behind during this demolition and in the aftermath of demolition, the violence which followed; the acts of violence which took place later and the role of police which was revealed during all these episodes has come as a shocker in a very blatant way. During demolition police failed to do its allotted duty and during violence it either looks the other way round or assists the rioters. In the aftermath of the violence, its role is again suspect. While the major victims of violence are the minorities, uniformly police arrests more from the minority community in large numbers. Despite some noble exceptions, many police personnel are most willing to violate the process of law to support the majoritarian communalism.

The violence has a pattern. While the Muslims are 13.4% according to 2001 census, the number of victims from Muslim minorities is close to 90%. The strong persistence of biases against them acts as the fertile ground on which the violence takes place. Most sections of society, including political leadership of many parties, large sections of those in bureaucracy and police have strong biases against these hapless minorities, due to which the starting point of their action is in presuming that they are criminals. What follows next in the form of their action, quite conforms to this pattern.

The violence has been leading to polarization of communities along religious lines. This polarization is so strong by now that starting from schools, colleges and some work places, where per chance some Muslims find employment, the segregation along religious lines is becoming discernible. This polarization has led to the rise of communal forces to bigger
electoral power is very visible. In Mumbai, as Shiv Sena took the lead in violence, it did come to grab electoral power in the aftermath of violence. Simultaneously the inquiry commission reports, which have come out so far, Srikrishna or Liberahan, get their place in the cold storage. While the communal parties in power treat these reports with disdain, the Congress shows no interest in getting them implemented, the calculations of vote bank comes to the fore and we painfully see the work of judiciary, the inquiry commission reports, adorning the library shelves, and that’s about all. Had there been the rule of law, the perpetrators of hate speech, those who lead the communal violence would have been behind the bars rather than roaring in the streets and being upgraded to be called as Hindu Hriday Samrats (Emperor of Hindu Hearts). It is no coincidence that after the 92-93 Mumbai carnage Bal Thackeray, who led the violence, and Narendra Modi who was at the centre of 2002 Gujarat pogrom, both came to be anointed with this pre fix of Hindu Hriday Samrat.

The impact of communalization process is also visible in section of judiciary. In states like Gujarat, the cases had to be shifted out of the state to see that the justice is done. In case of Ayodhya judgment of Allahabad High Court, we saw the situation where two of the three judges resorted to the ‘faith’ of the people to divide the ‘disputed’ land amongst three contending parties. This was something neither asked for by the litigants nor can stand on the legal grounds. The divisive violence has been leading to the formation of physical ghettoes where the sunlight of progress and liberal value can hardly reach despite the best efforts of the social workers committed to the cause of education and reform. In Mumbai in particular *Mohalla *Committees did play some positive role and do continue to play the same in some form, thanks to the affirmative action by some police officers of impeccable reputation and the social workers committed to the cause of peace in society.

Unfortunately the response of state and the social groups to mitigate such a downward shift of the polity has not been adequate. While Government has set up National Foundation for Communal Harmony, its agenda and resources are too limited to address the mammoth task of spreading the awareness about the values of secular democratic values to most of the sections of society. The school text books, NCERT, have been improvised but these do not reach all the students, the state boards have yet to follow it. The sensitization efforts of the state, sensitization of bureaucracy and police are far from adequate. The need to look at their syllabi is most urgent. Surely they have a lot of time to spend for their basic job of policing or becoming the part of steel frame of the country but the aspects of education related to national integration have also to be taken more seriously and need to be integrated in to their curricula. The communal violence bill which can go a long way to prevent the occurrence of violence is again lying in the freezer of the government.

Social groups have their own limitations. While some social groups have focused on getting justice and have praiseworthy results, still the journey is too long due to the structural problems created due to spread of communal ideology and mindsets, which are dominating the social space. The emphasis on awareness program, though are there, these remains patchy, ad hoc and are not reaching the people where it should reach. The programs for secular values, in the arena of culture, street theatre, songs, films, though have taken off well, remain nascent. We have a long way to go for national unity, which is very much needed at the present time. The act of nation building is to follow the path of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. This whole exercise of Babri demolition has been the one of attempts to break the national unity, in a serious way. To put salt to the wound the communal forces are getting more legitimacy, one hopes that the lessons of Babri demolition are taken seriously by the society and state to reverse the trends initiated by this ghastly tragedy.

Dalit group to ‘spearhead reconstruction of Babri Masjid’

A Dalit group plans to start the movement afresh for the reconstruction of the Babri Masjid at Ayodhya. Babari Masjid Navnirman Sena (Army for Babari Masjid Reconstruction), a group of ‘awakened’ Ambedkarite youths, as they would like to identify themselves, plan to organize the support of Dalits for “helping Muslim brethren rebuild the Babari mosque.”

Cadres of Bahujan Swayam Sewak Sanghathan (BSS) and its political front Ambedkar Samaj Party (ASP) had a condolence meeting on December 6, last year, that is, on the eve of 56th death anniversary of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar and 20th anniversary of demolition of Babari Masjid. In the meeting they discussed how for past 20 years the demise day of Dalit icon, Dr BR Ambedkar has become a ‘victory day’ for Hindutva forces and thus what would have been otherwise a day of sorrow is celebrated by them. BSS cadres have hence given a new slogan: “Dalit ki majboori hai, Babri masjid zaruri hai” (Dalits are compulsion bound to rebuild the Babari mosque).

Bhai Tej Singh, commander-in-chief of BSS and President of ASP said, “Dalits and Muslims have common enemy – right wing Hindutva forces. For thousands of years they burnt our houses, misbehaved with our daughters and made sure that we live a subhuman life. Same forces were behind the demolition of Babari mosque and Gujarat pogrom in 2002,” adding, “it is now important that together we defeat them.”

In the same meeting, it was discussed that Muslims in India are not foreigners, who “came either from Arab, Iran, but are aboriginal to this land,” who only got themselves “liberated from the clutches of Hinduism by embracing Islam,” which they regard as the “noble religion of compassion, equality and fraternity.” They also discussed the current ‘deplorable’ situation of the Muslim community, whose representation has been reduced to minimum in government positions and are seen with suspicion by security agencies. Tej Singh argues that like several Dalit leaders, Muslims leaders too have largely failed the community and no one dares to take “bold stand, lest they lose out their positions.”

On the 21st anniversary of the demolition of Babri Masjid

Stand up for Secularism and Democracy

Raise your voice for Justice for Victims of Communal Violence

December 6, 1992 must count as the darkest day in the history of independent India. While the crowds mobilized by organisations of the RSS destroyed Babri Mosque under a planned conspiracy, the institutions of the Indian state, elected state and central governments, police and judiciary stood by as mute spectators. This was the culmination of a prolonged campaign by the RSS and it’s allies to destabilize constitutional government and seize power via spread of communal hatred and violence. Thousands of Indian citizens were killed in riots instigated by these forces during the run-up to, and after the demolition of Babri Masjid.

The history of independent India is also a history of communal killings. Riots in Jabalpur (1961) , Jamshedpur (1964), Rourkela (1964), Bhiwandi, Ahmedabad (1989), Nellie (1983), Delhi (1984), Malliana-Hashimpur (1987), Bhagalpur (1989), Mumbai (1992-93), Gujarat (2002), Kandhamal (2008) and Muzaffarnagar (2013), are major landmarks in this dark history. Citizens have also suffered violence due to their religious and ethnic identities in Kashmir, during the Khalistani movement in Punjab, and in Assam. None of the organisations and major leaders involved in organising communal violence have been brought to book by the criminal justice system of India. In fact different components of Indian state have contributed to this violence by their acts of commission and omission.

We believe all decent-minded Indians mourn the loss of innocent lives in communal violence on December 6. It is also a day for us to

i) Express our solidarity with victims of communal violence who are fighting for justice

ii) Redouble our efforts to build an India in which no one faces threat due to her/his community, religion, place of origin or ethnicity

iii) Demand that due punishment be meted out to all organizations and people responsible for communal violence

iv) Demand accountability of the administration and police officials for failing to take action against communal violence.

Come out in large numbers for a demonstration at Jantar Mantar, Delhi on 6 December, 2013 at 12:00 PM

Babri Masjid demolition was a planned sabotage: Investigative Report

The demolition of Babri Masjid on 06 Dec 1992 was an act of planned sabotage. Leaders of Ram Janmaboomi movement had conspired to and succeeded in razing the sixteenth century mosque. It was a well-planned conspiracy that even premier investigation agency CBI has not been able to conclusively establish after years of investigation, claimed Cobrapost.com which conducted the investigation and released its report based on the sting operation on Friday.

In a press statement, the website said its expose has “established beyond doubt that the demolition was not an act of frenzied mobs but an act of sabotage by these agents saboteurs, planned with so much secrecy that no government agency got a wind of it.”

Some of the findings of the Cobrapost investigation:

-- The conspiracy was hatched at the level of two Hindu outfits, VHP and Shiv Sena, but not jointly.

-- Both these outfits had trained their cader as part of an action plan, many months before it was implemented on December 6.

-- A Balidani Jatha, or suicide squad, was formed with the trained RSS workers.

-- Bajrang Dal, the youth wing of VHP, had its training in Surkhej of Gujarat, while Shiv Sena trained its cader in Bhind–Morena.

-- The training regime included imparting skills such as climbing taller structures with help of grappling hooks and ropes and digging earth with implements like pickaxes and spades, apart from regular drills and physical exercises.

-- Traditional implements such as chisels, heavy-duty hammers, pickaxes, spades, sabbals, and other tools were procured in large numbers and put to use on December 6, to pull the disputed structure down.

-- A Sankalp, or an oath, was administered to the lakhs of karsevaks in the presence of all the frontline leaders of the movement like L. K. Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Ashok Singhal, Giriraj Kishore and Acharya Dharmendra, apart from the entire galaxy of Hindu sants. The Sankalp conducted from the Ram Katha Manch gave a call for the construction of a grand Ram Temple at the disputed site after removing the structure. The assault on Babri was begun as soon as the Sankalp was conducted by Mahant Ram Vilas Vedanti.

-- VHP cobbled together a band of 1200 RSS workers secreted from their respective zones a few days before the demolition. This secret formation was given the name of Laxman Sena and Ramji Gupta was given charge of this army which was formed to dismantle the Babri. Its clarion call was “Jai Sheshavtaar”.

-- Shiv Sena, on the other hand, had a similar band of local workers at Ayodhya, called Pratap Sena, which provided all the logistics for the action plan.

-- The RSS–VHP–Bajrang Dal combine held a secret meeting at Hindu Dham at Ayodhya a day before the demolition. Attended by Ashok Singhal, Vinay Katiyar, V. H. Dalmia, Moropant Pingle and Mahant Avaidyanath, it was decided in the meeting that the Babri masjid will be razed down.

-- The RSS and BJP had held a secret meeting at Hanuman Bagh which was attended by H. V. Sheshadri from the RSS and all senior leaders of BJP present at Ayodhya, Vinay Katiyar, Uma Bharti and L. K. Advani.

-- Shiv Sena had its secret parleys at North Avenue in Delhi in November 1992 which was attended by senior leaders such as Jai Bhagwan Goel, Moreshwar Save, Satish Pradhan, Anand Dhige and others in which a strategy was chalked out before making a move to Ayodhya. Both Balasaheb Thackeray and Raj Thackeray kept a close tab on all these activities.

-- Shiv Sena had planned to use dynamite to bring down Babri if traditional methods failed.

-- Apart from traditional tools, the Bihar team used petrol bombs to dismantle the structure.

-- The local administration goaded and helped the frenzied mobs of karsevaks in removing the “headache” the Babri had become for them.

-- Many antique artefacts were secreted from the Babri. For instance, two pieces of the stone engraving erected there by Mir Baqi in 1528 that fell apart are lying with Pawan Pandey who wants to sell them.

‘Rao was prime culprit; judiciary and executive colluded in destruction’ reveals AG Noorani’s latest book on Babri

“Former Prime Minister Narasimha Rao was the prime culprit in the demolition of the Babri Masjid as he acted in such a manner that he would not be blamed for this National Dishonour and virtual collusion of the judiciary and executive in this shameful act.” This is what summed up by the distinguished Constitutional expert and political commentator A. G. Noorani in his latest book on the Ajodhya dispute titled as ‘Destruction of the Babri Masjid: A National Dishonour’.

He asserted that the evidence in the book nails Narasimha Rao shows his culpability. He was the man, who knew what was happening and he kept his eyes shut. “But Rao did all that. From the record which I had laid hands on, it is very clear that he was communal- minded. He had a record of communal mindedness when he was chief minister of Andhra Pradesh. He had a bad record during the struggle against Nizam in Hyderabad. At one time, Advani also praised him, called and him fantastic. I must mention also that it required chief justice like Justice Venkatachaliah, to make demolition possible. I have documented that Venkatachaliah facilitated demolition by giving those adjournments and after the demolition, Attorney General Milon Banerjee reminded him, “I had warned your lordship.” Venkatachaliah went so far saying, I hope you are looking after the health of the kar sevaks. And sure enough, because of this he was appointed chairman of Constitution Review Committee by the BJP government,” Noorani said.

He also accused the CBI of playing a deceitful role in the demolition cases. He pointed that when Advani was in power, CBI had one role, and when he was not in power, it played a different game.

Describing the demolition of Babri Masjid was a watershed in Indian history, Noorani said it propelled Advani into a position of leadership and it seemed he would become prime minister and it did help spread the message of Hindutva but it did not last long as could be seen in the election results of 2004 and 2009.

In the book, he also argued that Babri Masjid should not have been allowed to be made a Muslim issue alone saying Muslim leadership made considerable mistakes like the Babri Masjid Action Committee’s stupid call of boycott of all official functions of Republic Day was bound to have negative impact.

On the Allahabad High Court judgment on the title suit of the Babri Masjid, he said that the majority judgment of the two Hindu judges of High Court recalled the cases of those demolitions by Muslim rulers as if that sanctifies demolition now. Contending this, Noorani said prominent historian Romila Thapar has very well documented how Buddhist places of worship were demolished by Hindus and vice versa. A Hindu Kashmiri King Harshdev looted temples to fill his coffers.

History of December 6, 1992: How Lord Rama Appeared Inside Babri Masjid

On December 23, 1949,the Ayodhya Police filed an FIR following the planting of the idol of Lord Rama in Babri Masjid the night before. It named Abhiram Das as the prime accused. The secret story of what happened.

According to the plan, Paramhans was to arrive at the Hanumangarhi residence of Abhiram Das by 9 pm, after his meal. They were to go together to the Babri Masjid, where another sadhu, Vrindavan Das, was to join them with an idol of Lord Rama. The trio was then supposed to go inside the sixteenth-century mosque, plant the idol below its central dome and keep the deserted place of worship under their control till the next morning when a larger band of Hindu communalists would pour in for support. They had been strictly instructed that their entry into the mosque had to be completed at any cost before midnight – the time when there would be a change of guard at the gate of the mosque.

Ayodhya Issue: Negotiators Discuss Proposal, to Submit in SC

The main litigant in Babri Masjid case Hashim Ansari has met Akhara Parishad president Mahant Gyan Das to discuss a new proposal for resolution of Ayodhya dispute and they plan to put it before the Supreme Court.

The formula for out-of-court settlement broadly talks about the 70 acres of disputed premises accommodating both mosque and temple with a partition wall which will be 100 ft high, according to Gyan Das, who is chief priest of Ayodhya's famous Hanuman Garhi temple.

Ansari met Gyan Das at Hanuman Garhi premises along with his son Iqbal Ansari.

The negotiation process, which started after the September 30 2010, Allahabad High Court verdict over Ayodhya issue, was largely being supported by cross section of the civil society and religious leaders from both the communities.

"We are drafting the final points of negotiation draft which will be presented before the Supreme Court soon after the hearing starts," Gyan Das said after the meeting yesterday, adding, they will be meeting the Prime Minister also to seek his cooperation.

Ansari, said, "After the draft is finalised, we will get it signed by all the top religious leaders from both the communities who are supporting our cause since beginning, before submitting it in the Supreme Court."

However, the negotiation draft will be made public only after it is submitted to the Supreme Court, he said.

Gyan Das said they have discussed the proposal with almost all Hindu religious establishments and main spiritual leaders.

"With our proposal everyone seems to be agreed. Soon we will be meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and present our proposal before him and will seek his help, support and cooperation for the peaceful solution of this dispute," said Gyan Das.

Distancing himself from Vishwa Hindu Parishad, he said the outfit was "not a party in our peace process, as VHP never want to build Ram temple".

"They just want to create communal tension between the communities," he alleged.

"We are in favour of construction of both Ram temple and Babri Masjid adjacent to each other but with a huge division wall of more than 100 ft in between, as we want to avoid any nuisance later," he said.

He said they were opposed to VHP's "stand that the mosque should be build out of 'panch kosi parikrama' boundary of Ayodhya".

Ram's birthplace Ayodhya is in Pakistan, says book

Ayodhya, the birthplace of Hindu warrior-god Ram, is in Pakistan, claims a book by a top Muslim leader.

Ayodhya in Faizabad district of Uttar Pradesh is not the original city by the same name as it was inhabited by human beings only in 7th century BC while Rama is believed to have been born 18 million years ago, says "Facts of Ayodhya Episode" authored by Abdul Rahim Quraishi, assistant general secretary of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB).

Quoting research papers of Jassu Ram and other archaeologists of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the book reveals that there were two Ayodhyas - one which was built by King Raghu, great grandfather of Ram, and the second built by Ram himself.

"Jassu Ram in 'Ancient Geography of the Ramayana' says that both Ayodhyas are in Dera Ismail Khan district of Pakistan's North West Frontier Province (now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa)," says Quraishi, also president of Majlis Tameer-e-Millat, a socio-religious organization.

Quraishi, a key figure in the committee constituted by the AIMPLB to fight the Babri Masjid case, said Ayodhya in Faizabad district was known as Saket in 7th century BC.

In all probability, Hindus in 11th century CE gave the name of Ayodhya to the town. They also gave names connected with Ram Katha to various areas of the town.

The writer says that if the present Ayodhya was the birthplace of Ram, it would have been mentioned in Ramayana of Tulsidas, who penned the epic in 1574 CE in Ayodhya. Tulsidas wrote Ramayana during the time of Mughal emperor Akbar, the grandson of Babar.

"If Babri Masjid was constructed by demolishing a temple, he would have mentioned this," Quraishi told IANS.

He believes all these evidences may be produced during the hearing of the case in the Supreme Court, where the AIMPLB has challenged the 2010 verdict of the Allahbad High Court on the Babri Masjid title suit.

The Urdu version of the 82-year-old leader's book has hit the stands. The English translation is expected to be published soon.

Quraishi pointed out that the excavations undertaken by Banaras Hindu University and ASI and those on the orders of Allahbad High Court found nothing to prove that a temple existed there. There was no objection by Hindus when Babri Masjid was constructed in 1528.

He referred to a 1855 incident in which 'bairagies' (Hindu ascetics) returned Babri Masjid to Muslims after occupying it for some days.

It was in 1885 that a Mahant filed a suit for permission to construct a temple on chabutra or platform in the outer courtyard of the Babri Masjid claiming it to be the birthplace of Ram.

The sub-judge of Faizabad, Pandit Hari Kishan, on Dec 24, 1885, refused to give permission. Neither Mahant Dharam Das in his plaint stated nor sub-judge, a Hindu Pandit, remarked that Babar built the mosque at a scared place of Hindus.

The author said the Allahbad High Court decided the Babri Masjid title suit on the basis of belief. "The findings of the three-judge bench are patently wrong. In 1855, the Hindus of Ayodhya did not believe that the Babri Masjid stood on Ram Janmasthan."

The book has dealt in detail with developments leading to the night of December 22, 1949, when idols of Ram and other gods were planted in Babri Masjid.

Quoting extensively from the orders of various courts, reports of commissions and books, Quraishi has written in detail how the conspiracy was hatched by the Hindu Mahasbha and implemented by K.K.K. Nayar, the then deputy commissioner-cum-district magistrate.

The Babri Masjid was demolished by a mob of Hindu zealots on December 6, 1992, and and a makeshift shrine was constructed on its debris.

Babri Masjid gates were locked and Hindu groups were fighting in court since 1959 without any result as Indian judiciary is known to prolong cases for decades. However, Rajiv Gandhi's handling of Shah Bano case lead to the circumstances of opening of Babri gates to Hindu groups. This opening of gates eventually led to demolition of Babri Masjid by Hindu Groups. Rajiv Gandhi wanted to balance his image as neutral towards both muslims and hindus! In effect, Rajiv Gandhi can be held solely responsible for all the communal issues that India has seen since last 2-3 decades.

A Hinduism that is the mirror opposite of Hindutva

For this article, I will concentrate on “Ram Ke Naam”, the middle film of what became a trilogy on Communalism. While the film covers a two year span from 1990 onwards, the back story begins in the mid-1980’s when the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and sister organizations of the Hindutva family (the Sangh Parivar) was searching for a way to capture the imagination of the Hindus of India who at 83%, constitute the real vote bank of this country. A Dharam Sansad (Parliament of Priests) in 1984 (the year Indira Gandhi was killed and the Congress rode to power on a sympathy wave) identified 3000 sites of potential conflict between Hindus and Muslims that could mobilize the sentiments of Hindus and polarize the nation. The top three sites chosen were at Ayodhya, Kashi and Mathura. The Dharam Sansad decided to start with the Ram temple/Babri Mosque in Ayodhya. Soon a nationwide village to village campaign to collects bricks and money to build a grand Ram temple in place of the Babri mosque began. The campaign went international as NRI’s chipped in from distant lands. By design or by remarkable coincidence, India’s state controlled TV channel, Doordarshan started to run a never-ending serial on the Hindu epic - The Ramayana (The story of Lord Ram). In those days there were few other TV channels and the whole nation was hooked onto mythology. These were the ingredients already at play when BJP stalwart L. K. Advani set out on his chariot of fire.

We learned that contrary to the theory that votaries of Hindutva were propagating that claimed that there was a temple underneath the mosque, the artefacts that archaeologists had originally found in digs in the vicinity had nothing to do with any temple. According to historians, in the 7th century at the location of present day Ayodhya, probably stood the Buddhist city of Saket. We learned that the proliferation of Akhadas (military wings attached to temples) in Ayodhya had nothing to do with the long war to liberate the birthplace of Lord Ram as was being claimed by Hindutva ideologues, but owed their origin to the ongoing rivalry between armed Shaivite and Vaishnavite sects in the middle ages. Most importantly we learned that in the 16th century, the poet Tulsidas visited Ayodhya many times as he composed his famous Ram Charitra Manas, a text which converted the relatively obscure Sanskrit Ramayana into khadi boli, a form of Hindi, that popularized the story of Lord Ram for the ordinary folk of North India. Not only does Tulsidas never mention that a temple marking the birthplace of Lord Ram was just demolished by Babar, there is another telling fact. Until the 16th century the Rama legend was largely restricted to the few Brahmins who knew Sanskrit. It is only after Tulsidas’s Hindi version had spread that Ram became a popular god for the masses and Ram temples sprouted across the country. In other words in the middle of the 16th century when the Babri Mosque was built, it is highly unlikely that there were any Ram temples at all. Today Ayodhya is full of Ram temples and at least twenty of them claim to be built at the birthplace of Ram. The reason is obvious. Any temple that establishes itself as the birthplace of Ram gets huge donations from its devotees.

Ayodhya: VHP’s first lot of stones for Ram temple arrives, police on alert

Meanwhile, Mahant Nritya Gopal Das told reporters that there was a "signal" from the Modi government that the temple will be build "now".

Almost six months after VHP announced its nationwide drive to collect stones for construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya, two trucks of stones arrived in the temple city on Sunday, even as police said it was monitoring the situation.

“Two trucks of stones have been unloaded at Ram Sewak Puram, a VHP property in Ayodhya, and ‘Shila Pujan’ (praying of the stones) has been performed by Mahant Nritya Gopal Das, the president of Ram Janam Bhumi Nyas,” VHP spokesman Sharad Sharma said.

Meanwhile, Mahant Nritya Gopal Das told reporters that there was a “signal” from the Modi government that the temple will be build “now”. “Now, the time has come for the construction of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. Lot of stones arrived today in Ayodhya. And now the arrival of stones will continue. We have signals from Modi Government that Mandir construction would be done now,” he said.

Reacting to the arrival of stones at VHP headquarters, Faizabad Senior Superintendent of Police Mohit Gupta said that the police was monitoring the situation. “We are monitoring all the developments minutely. Stones have arrived and being kept in a private premises. Due to this development, if their was any breach in peace or communal harmony we will definitely take action,” he said.

Asserting its resolve to build the Ram temple, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) had in June announced a nationwide drive to collect stones for construction of the temple here and had also asked the Muslim community not to pose any hindrance.

“About 2.25 lakhs cubic ft of stones are required for the construction of the Ram temple and about 1.25 lakh cubic ft of stones are ready at the VHP’s headquarter in Ayodhya. The rest one lakh cubic ft stones would be collected nationwide from Hindu devotees,” VHP leader Ashok Singhal, who died last month in Gurgaon, had said.

The announcement had met with a quick reaction from the administration, which had said that it would oppose the move as the matter was sub judice. Principal Secretary (Home), Devashish Panda, had said that the Uttar Pradesh government would not allow arrival of stones in Ayodhya for Ram Mandir.

“Since the matter is sub judice, the government will not allow starting of any new tradition regarding Ayodhya issue,” he had said.
