Bangladesh considering abandoning Islam as its official religion
Bangladesh considering abandoning Islam as its official religion following wake of extremist attacks
Supreme Court is considering dropping Islam as country's state religion
The move is being backed by leaders of minority faiths in the country
It comes after a string of terror attacks against Hindus and Christians
But Bangladesh government insist terror attacks are not the work of ISIS
Bangladesh could drop Islam as the country's official religion following a string of extremist attacks against people of other faiths.
The supreme court in the South Asia nation has began to hear arguments which challenge Islam's status as the official state religion.
It comes after a spate of attacks against people of other religions such as Hindus, Christians, and minorities Shi'ites, which have been blamed on Islamic extremists.
When Bangladesh was formed in 1971 after the nation split from Pakistan, it was declared a secular state.
However, in 1988 the country's constitution was amended with Islam declared as the state religion.
But this is now being disputed as illegal in the latest court battle and is being supported by religious minority leaders.
Meanwhile the US has also warned that ISIS is stepping up recruitment in Bangladesh, even though the government says the extremist problems are home grown.
One Bangladesh police official told Breitbart: 'We have made arrests on each and every so-called ISIS-claimed attack.
'The attackers have confessed their crimes in court. They have also confessed being a Jamaatul Mujahedin Bangladesh member, and denied any linkage with ISIS.'
However an American director of National Intelligence has insisted attacks were the work of terrorist groups.
In a written testimony to the U.S. Senate James Clapper noted the claims of responsibility from ISIS for 11 high profile attacks on foreigners and religious minorities, and claims from the Ansarullah Bangla Team and al-Qaida in the Indian Subcontinent for killing at least 11 progressive writers and bloggers in Bangladesh since 2013.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh has been in political ferment since the run-up to January 2014 elections.
They were boycotted by opposition parties, and over war crimes prosecutions brought against Jamaat-e-Islami leaders over alleged involvement in atrocities during Bangladesh's 1971 war of independence.
Muslims make up some 90 percent of Bangladesh’s population, while Hindus account for 8 percent and other religions—including Buddhism and Christianity—make up the rest.

Bangladesh plans to ban ‘terrorist’ Jamaat-e-Islami
Secularism is a founding pillar of the country, says Deputy-Foreign Minister.
Bangladesh is planning to ban the Jamaat-e-Islami, the country’s biggest Islamist party, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam said on Wednesday.
“Jamaat is a full-terrorist organisation and the BNP (Bangladesh Nationalist Party), which has had an alliance with Jamaat, is a half-terrorist organisation. The BNP needs to be reformed. But Jamaat needs to be banned. After all, a terrorist organisation like the Jamaat cannot be allowed to conduct normal political activities in the country,” Mr. Alam said while meeting a group of international journalists at his office on Wednesday.
Mr. Alam’s comments against Jamaat came a week after secular blogger Nazimuddin Samad was hacked and shot dead in Dhaka. Though Jamaat has said it is not involved in the murder, a confrontation is brewing between the group and the law enforcement authorities.
Global efforts
Bangladesh has seen a rise in extremist violence over the last few years and the murder of Samad on April 6 has created a tense situation in the country right before the traditional Bangla celebration of Pohela Boishakh.
In recent months, several activists and minority communities were targeted in the country by Islamists.
Mr. Alam said Bangladesh, which is a party to the Saudi Arabia-led struggle against global terrorism, wants concerted global efforts to defeat terrorism.
However, he pointed out that “tension within the Islamic world” is also responsible for the inability to deal with growing terrorism.
The Election Commission of Bangladesh has already banned Jamaat from contesting elections. “We are looking forward to the statements from the War Crimes Tribunal on Jamaat’s role in the war crimes of the 1971 [liberation] war and will move ahead from there [to ban the outfit],” Mr. Alam said.
His comments against the Jamaat and the BNP highlight the deep political divide in Bangladesh between the ruling party and the opposition. . Challenging criticisms that the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is cracking down on political opponents, Mr. Alam said: “Our commitment to secularism is a founding pillar of Bangladesh, which cannot be understood from outside without understanding the unique Bangladeshi conditions.
“Some of the political forces in the country have been against the foundational principles of Bangladesh. Such forces will have to be defeated.”
Mr. Alam acknowledged that India and Myanmar have been strong partners of Bangladesh in dealing with terrorism that threatens South Asia.

Re: Bangladesh considering abandoning Islam as its official religion
Islam does not seem to agree with the separation of mosque and state and many secular governments protect their right to rule and are legislating things like ban on full face coverings and praying in the streets.
Secular law is also creating better laws than what Sharia offers.
I wonder if Muslims would be well served by backing off on having their ideology and Sharia as the law of the land as compared to a better secular law.

No argument and if a non-believing politician tried to get elected he would likely fail miserably. They still try to separate church and state with their more secular legislation.SBM wrote:USA has secular laws but the currency says IN GOD WE TRUST and Congress does not begin their session without doing invocation in the name of JesusI wonder if Muslims would be well served by backing off on having their ideology and Sharia as the law of the land as compared to a better secular law.
I am here to learn of Islam though and not the American way.
Would you like to deal with my question on Islam now that you have shown that you know a bit about Americans?

Countries where freedom of speech and association are the norm.
Generally speaking, all the countries that Middle Eastern people are trying to immigrate to.

Indonesia-Turkey-Pakistan-Bangladesh-Malaysia-Iran they all hold free election and they are all democracies as per their definition.Democracies and most other nations that hold free elections.
Countries where freedom of speech and association are the norm.
UK-USA-France-Sweden they all say on paper freedom of speech but that freedom is limited to WHITE ANGLO SAXON only. If freedom of speech is norm in Sweden why would they banned Minarets?
In USA Democracy can by bought under Campaign contribution, ask no one but Donald Trump and he will tell you how big interests and rich people define their own form of democracy, Remember Al Gore received the most votes but George Bush won the election. Same thing can happen in 2016. There are no free election anywhere in the World. Money and Power define democracy or theocracy or Monarchy
In India Democracy can be bought by corrupt politicians and many politicians who have criminal records are enjoying the perks of DEMOCRATICALLY elected leaders.

There is no freedom of speech in some of those counties. Some also insist that women wear various head and face clothing and that is not a democratic or freedom situation.
Strange as the net is full of videos of Muslim protesting for Islam and against the host country.UK-USA-France-Sweden they all say on paper freedom of speech but that freedom is limited to WHITE ANGLO SAXON only.
I don't know but I imagine that the Swedish people think that Muslims have been misbehaving. I found this disturbing if it is true.If freedom of speech is norm in Sweden why would they banned Minarets?

No argument there my friend.
If we want to get to the root political system of all countries, I would say that there are no democratic countries or whatever other name you would want to give to the regimes.
FMPOV, all countries are oligarchies so I agree with you that power is being bought.
Money talks. That has always been the way. Even in Muslim majority countries.

Re: Bangladesh considering abandoning Islam as its official religion
There is no such thing as a "Muslim Criminal" gang. There might just be criminal gangs whose members happen to have muslim sounding names. Practicing muslims wouldn't be in criminal gangs as they would at least know that crime is haraam in Islam. If the government is helpless against these gangs then I am sure these gangs are going to take over the entire country one day.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thXCb1V ... r_embedded

By the way, I am not even reading the articles. Did a google search on "hindus raping Muslim women" and posted the first 3 links. Will be doing that from now on when ever the half chaddi posts something similar (skipped one link where some "muslims" raped some hindu women).

Christian grocer hacked to death in latest Bangladesh attack:
Unidentified men hacked to death a Christian grocer near a church in Bangladesh's northwest on Sunday, police said, amid growing attacks on religious minorities and secular activists by Islamist militants.
The attack was similar to those on Hindus, Buddhists and members of other religious minorities in Muslim-majority Bangladesh in recent months.
The murder came just hours after the wife of a top anti-terror police officer was stabbed and shot dead in the southeastern city of Chittagong.
Bangladesh is reeling from a wave of gruesome murders of liberals, secular activists and religious minorities.
