Wag the Dog

This is an extract from an email by a moviebuff friend from US. I have not concluded anything from it but it sounds very interesting and so I want to share it with you all

Around the time of the Monica Lewinsky fiasco, I saw "Wag the Dog' starring Dustin Hoffman. It came out just "before" the monica incident was made public, but it was as if they had foreknowledge of what would soon be revealed. It even had a shot of the actor playing the pres. with a 'firefly girl' that looked exactly like the one of Pres. Clinton with Monica right down to the now infamous tam.

It centered around a staged war with some remote country that sounded a lot like Afghanistan which was attacked by the U.S. three days after the televised confession. All of that was in the movie and it came out just before any of it hit the media. Dustin Hoffman went on the talk shows to swear he hadn't known about the Monica affair at the time the movie was made.

Last year, I told a friend about the movie and he wanted to see it. We rented it and it had been completely revised. The Tam scene had disappeared. The war was no longer with the Afghanistan sounding country. The firefly (monica) had disappeared. The whole story was changed. I called the friend who recommended I see it back in the nineties. She rented the DVD and she too was as astounded at the missing plot points. It was a completely different story.

Here's something from MSNBC about the movie. Apparently they saw the beret also.

"In this movie a President rapes a young girl, referred to as a 'firefly', who was wearing a red beret eerily reminiscent of Monica Lewinsky. To make matters worse, the rape is being made public only about two weeks before the President's reelection. To spin the story, and distract Americans from the sex scandal, the White House Chief of Staff contacts a media expert played by Robert DeNiro.

After hearing the sordid details of the rape, this media expert then sets in motion a cover story about a strategic nuclear bomber that does not exist, and a totally fake war. This combined story is designed to move the story of the rape from the front page to the deep inside section of the daily newspapers. Further, the media expert knows a war will cause the American people to rally behind the President, simply because he is leading Americans in a war, a cause which history has always shown produces high Presidential ratings, whomever he might be.

The media expert then immediately flies to Hollywood, where he enlists the aid of a major producer to create news footage of this fake war on a studio set. The picture they create is of a young girl running for her life in a bombed-out village. She is carrying a fake white cat as she is running, and she is looking very scared, by the way."
