A Tale of Two Systems: 3 Pope of Christianity and the Dawoodi Bohra Dai

The one and only free public forum for Bohras. The focus of this forum is the reform movement, the Dawoodi Bohra faith and, of course, the corrupt priesthood. But the discussion is in no way restricted to the Bohras alone.

A Tale of Two Systems: 3 Pope of Christianity and the Dawoodi Bohra Dai

In just fifteen years, the Christian world has witnessed remarkable change through the election of three Popes. Each transition was marked by deliberation, transparency, and spiritual intent, demonstrating the power of democratic values in religious leadership. The 3 Pope of Christianity—Benedict XVI, Francis, and now his successor—represent a system that, despite being ancient, still holds space for reform, dialogue, and diversity of thought. This stands in stark contrast to the Dawoodi Bohra system, where for over four hundred years, leadership has been confined to one family, inherited like property rather than earned through divine inspiration or community consensus.

The Dawoodi Bohra community’s system of appointing the Dai has become, in practice, a hereditary monarchy. Since the 47th Dai, leadership has passed almost exclusively from father to son, all within a single family line. While continuity and stability are often touted as strengths, they have come at the cost of renewal, introspection, and justice. For over four centuries, no Dai has been chosen from outside this lineage. The idea that divine wisdom and leadership can only flow through one bloodline defies the very spirit of spiritual egalitarianism that the faith once upheld.

I had hoped that this cycle would one day break. I believed that maybe—just maybe—Khuzema Qutbuddin would see the need for a shift. I believed that he would remember the deeper values of Dawat: service, humility, and the need for Ilham from Imam-ul-Zaman. I waited to see if he would appoint someone truly worthy, someone outside his immediate family, someone guided by insight and spirituality rather than bloodline. But like so many before him, he followed the same pattern. He appointed his own son.

That moment was pivotal for me. It was the moment I understood that nothing had changed. The faces change, but the formula remains the same. There is no room for new leadership, no real openness to community participation, and no possibility of selecting a leader based on divine guidance outside a chosen bloodline. This is not just disappointing—it is disqualifying. This is why I cannot align myself with this leadership. Because to join them now would mean endorsing a system that has long lost its essence.

Unlike the 3 Pope of Christianity, where leadership was transferred with humility and an awareness of the times, the Dawoodi Bohra system remains fixed in an outdated model of succession. Even when Pope Benedict XVI voluntarily stepped down, citing age and strength, he handed over the baton with grace, opening the way for Pope Francis—who brought with him a renewed emphasis on humility, service to the poor, and interfaith dialogue. Each Pope brought his own perspective, his own mission, and yet remained united in serving the Christian community and Christ’s teachings.

The Dawoodi Bohra leadership, on the other hand, has become increasingly distanced from the needs of the common follower. Corruption is no longer a hidden problem—it is systemic. The community has become materially prosperous, but spiritually hollow. Resources are directed toward luxury, not livelihood. Grand architectural projects take precedence over actual help to the needy. Instead of serving the poor, the system often exploits their loyalty. Instead of fostering knowledge and truth, it cultivates fear and obedience.

What is most painful is how deeply the philosophy of the Dawoodi Bohra faith has been forgotten. The Dai was never meant to be a king. He was supposed to be the spiritual representative of Imam-ul-Zaman—chosen not through inheritance, but through divine guidance. The position of Dai al-Mutlaq carried the responsibility to lead with justice, humility, and wisdom. But what remains now is only the outer shell of that legacy. Where is the Ilham now? Where is the light of Imam-ul-Zaman that once directed such appointments?

People have surrendered their ability to question. They have accepted a system that prioritizes ceremony over sincerity. Any voice of dissent is stifled. Any questioning of the leadership is treated as rebellion. In this climate of suppression, true spiritual growth becomes impossible. And so, I must part ways—not out of resentment, but out of principle. Because truth demands separation when compromise would mean betrayal.

The example of the 3 Pope of Christianity shows that even the oldest institutions can evolve. Even within the Catholic Church, leaders have stepped down when they felt they could no longer serve effectively. They have allowed others to step forward—based on vision, capacity, and collective agreement. They have remembered that religious leadership is not about legacy—it is about responsibility.

If the Dawoodi Bohra system continues to insist that leadership must remain within a single family, then it risks becoming a closed circle with no future. Spiritual leadership must be alive. It must be open to change. It must recognize that the light of God cannot be monopolized by a surname.

I say this not to insult, but to awaken. My heart still holds respect for the faith I was born into, but I cannot be blind to its misdirection. The essence of Dawat is not in rituals, wealth, or architecture. It is in justice, in service, in alignment with Imam-ul-Zaman. If that essence is lost, then the structure becomes meaningless.

Until the day a Dai is appointed based on divine Ilham and not inherited entitlement, I will remain outside. Not because I lack faith—but because I want to honor it.

Khuzaima Qutbuddin sahab swear on Quran, can taher fakhruddin swear on same Quran and claim that he is divinly appointed by Imam and he is in contact with Imam by any means?
