On Saturday, Dec. 22, independent convenience store owners and their
families are gathering at Fiesta Gardens for a business appreciation holiday celebration hosted by Capitol Beverage Company and Coors
Brewing Company. About 600 are expected to attend the barbecue, which begins at 1:00 p.m. At 2:30 p.m., the American Red Cross will host a special presentation about the work that national and local organization volunteers have accomplished in support of victims of the September 11, 2001 World Trade Center tragedy.
"So much has been made possible by the generous donations from citizens and businesses in every community," says Steve Crisman, CEO of the local American Red Cross. "We want to communicate with people
in Central Texas about precisely how their selfless contributions are being put to work."
One such business-oriented contributor is the Greater Austin Merchants Association (GAMA) which is donating $40,000
to the American Red Cross Liberty Fund. Beginning Sept. 13, the owners of 230 convenience stores who are members of GAMA collected donations from their customers at cash registers. Additionally, the GAMA members themselves added $50,000 to
the collection.
"We wanted to express our appreciation of the liberties and benefits of this great nation, which is our home and country," says Abdul Patel, GAMA director, who owns and operates three convenience stores in Austin. The majority of the association's members emigrated from India and Pakistan many years ago to the United States, and are
active in the Ismaili community, which is a Shiite sect of Islam. "As Americans, we felt an urgent need to contribute to the relief effort of the American Red Cross for the families of the victims of the World Trade Center attacks and of the police and fire departments in New York, as well as those organizations here in Central Texas."
