UP Assembly bypoll: BJP fails to retain Pharenda; SP wins, Congress 2nd

Last October, BJP lost Kairana Assembly seat in Shamli district to SP in a bypoll — it had not lost the seat since 1996.

At a time when BJP is planning to highlight the “achievements” of the Narendra Modi government — which will complete one year at the Centre this month — the party on Sunday lost the Pharenda Assembly bypoll in Maharajganj to ruling Samajwadi Party.

In the bypolls held in 10 Assembly seats in UP last September, BJP had lost seven to SP

“The BJP had won Lok Sabha polls by misleading the people. But they are continuously losing bypolls because the Centre has not done any work in one year,”

"Failure" to prosecute Modi for 2002 riots: Gujarat workers', activists' meet blames Indian judicial system

As the day draws closer for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to celebrate his one year in office (May 26), a well-attended meeting in Ahmedabad’s town hall sought to sharply focus his “culpability” during the 2002 Gujarat riots. The occasion was the first death anniversary of well-known Gujarat High Court advocate Mukul Sinha, who shot into prominence for cross examination of government officials at the Nanavati Commission, appointed by Modi as Gujarat chief minister to “investigate” the anti-Muslim riots.

The commission’s final report, which is said to have given Modi a clean chit, has still not been made public.

Speaking on the occasion, Justice Hosteb Suresh – one of the three members the Indian People's Tribunal fact-finding team headed by ex-Supreme Court judge VR Krishna Iyer to inquire into the Gujarat riots between March and April 2002 – blamed the justice system of India for failing to persecute Modi. Calling the riots genocide, Suresh, was former Mumbai High Court judge, regretted that the Supreme Court handed over the proceedings against Modi to a judicial magistrate.

Girish Patel, veteran Gujarat high court lawyer, also spoke in a similar tone.

Citing the report by Raju Ramachandran, amicus curiae (friend of the court) for the Supreme Court of India in the 2002 Gujarat violence case, Suresh underlined, “Enough material was available made by Ramachandran to prosecute Modi. The Supreme Court should have proceeded with a chargesheet against Modi. Yet, it decided to hand over the proceedings to magistrate. Tell me, which magistrate will dare prosecute him?”

Majority of those who attended the meeting included workers and victims of the 2002 riots.

Suresh further said, “The People’s Commission had found enough evidence against Modi. However, the judicial system did not take cognizance of the report. There is nothing new about it. The same thing happened with the Sri Krishna Commission report on Mumbai riots of 2002-03, when there many innocent people were killed, there was evidence of police barbarity. Yet, nothing happened. Nobody has been persecuted. The same was the case with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi.”

A book, which is collection of articles by Sinha and well-known human rights activists, titled, “Passion for Justice: Mukul Sinha’s Pioneering Work” was released on the occasion. Edited by Arvind Narrain of the Alternative Law Forum, Bengaluru, it carries articles on Sinha by Mahtab Alam, Nirjhari Sinha and Pratik Sinha, Upendra Baxi, Manisha Sethi, Mihir Desai, Cedric Prakash, Pravin Mishra, Harsh Mander, Gagan Sethi, Ajit Sahi, and Saumya Uma.

One of Sinha’s articles also blames the judicial system for failure to prosecute Modi. It says, Modi was “constitutionally responsible even if he was not criminally responsible because he failed to prevent lives of people.” He admitted, “Actions of the state are difficult to pin down within the existing criminal law framework as there is no doctrine of vicarious criminal responsibility by which you can make state officials vicariously liable for actions of those who were within their control.”

Two human rights awards instituted in the name of Sinha were given – one to Ram Niwas of the Maruti-Suzuki Workers’ Union, who led a relentless struggle against the management in 2013, and another to Bablu and Elena Devi, representing Extra Judicial Execution Victim Families Association of Manipur.

An interesting snippet from an article :-

For Modi to become PM or even, just to get a USA visa, the first requirement was a clean chit about the massacre in Gujarat. What he got instead was the absence of a clear guilty verdict. The Supreme Court’s amicus curae had found enough evidence to prosecute Modi but the Special Investigation Team did not agree. The SIT report confirmed that while Modi claimed to have been unaware of the Gulbarg Society massacre in Ahmedabad for as long as 5 hours after the atrocity, in a contrary finding, Modi was shown to have held meetings with police officers throughout the day in order to continuously monitor the violence. The SIT also confirmed that Modi’s Gujarat state government was guilty of destroying a huge amount of incriminating evidence, including completely destroying the records of police communications and government meetings during the riots. For a relieved corporate media, all this passed as “a clean chit”.

The “clean chit” for Modi’s closest aide Amit Shah, is more astounding. He is accused of being a key player in the cold blooded false encounter killings of Sohrabuddin, Kauser Bi and Tulsi Prajapati. The case is still going on even though Amit Shah has been strangely allowed to skip court on a regular basis. Despite the grave charges against him Modi chose him to be BJP’s star campaign manager in Uttar Pradesh. Under Shah’s watch there was a communal riot in Muzzaffarnagar and polarized voters gave BJP a landslide victory. Shah was then elevated to BJP President and delivered further victories in Haryana and Maharashtra.

The moral index of Narendra Modi can be guaged by the facts that he was denied a foreign Visa, was accused for genocide , a Supreme court aide finds prima facie evidences against him in riots , a summon is issued against him in his visit to foreign country . Still he has guts to remain unperturbed and boast about his achievements.

Modi’s Silence on Attacks on Minorities Shows Tacit Consent

Narendra Modi led NDA government is about to complete its one year in power. This period has seen a rise in communal attacks and hate speech against minorities, posing a threat to secular ethos of the nation. These are not isolated incidents or the pronouncements of a lunatic fringe. Modi’s ministers and parliamentarians have been spreading venom through such comments. Newsclick discussed these issues with Teesta Setalvad. Teesta explains that how this government is controlled by right wing fundamentalist groups like RSS and Modi’s silence on such incidents should be read as his consent. On question of saffronisation of education and culture, Teesta explains that culture and education have been important as tools for building fascism and this is what we are seeing today, with active government support. She feels that all the progressive and secular forces should come together to resist the Modi government's agenda to communalise society.

Being Muslims in Narendra Modi's India : Ghetto Life, Between Domination and Resistance

Charlotte THOMAS holds a Phd in political sciences from the Paris Institut d’Etudes Politiques (the French Institute of
Political Sciences, “Sciences Po”) – Centre for International Studies and Research (Ceri). Her dissertation is entitled
“Domination and resistance of the Muslim minority of Ahmedabad (India): paradoxes of the ghettoization process in Juhapura”. It deals with the situation of the Muslim minority after the anti-‐Muslim State-‐sponsored pogroms of 2002 in Gujarat. She got a scholarship from the French Defense Ministry and the State-‐funded National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) for three years (2009-‐2012) to conduct her researches.

Ballabhgarh Communal Tension: Their houses set on fire, Muslims flee village

Evidence of the hasty exodus everywhere. Almost no house is locked and many still have fans running a day after the violence

The violence may have lasted a little over an hour on Monday evening. But that was enough to make the Muslims residents of Atali village in Ballabgarh, Faridabad, flee for their lives. The mosque under dispute was burnt, homes were torched and belongings were abandoned. Most who fled the village agreed — a return simply didn’t seem possible.

The evidence of the hasty exodus could be seen everywhere. Almost no house was locked. Many still had fans running and policemen could seen going in to switch them off. Equally abundant were the signs of the carnage — streets littered with bricks, skeletons of torched vehicles and smoke-blackened house façades.

The lane that leads to the under-construction mosque in Atali village is lined with small shops and only one was owned by a Muslim. This shop alone was torched during the violence.

Muslims in the village claimed that this selective targeting of homes during the violence was the underlying trend. Surrounding the under-construction mosque are about 20 homes, 17 of them owned by Muslims. All 17 were torched on Monday. A godown owned by a Muslim farmer, almost a kilometre from the mosque, was burnt on Tuesday morning. It was the only structure in the area that was targeted.

Police said the village has been tense since the beginning of May, when the Muslims began construction of the mosque at the disputed site.

While the Muslims maintained that the court had given them permission to resume construction, after a near-six year stay was vacated, the Jats maintained that resuming the construction in the village was in clear violation of the court’s order.

The violence began a little before 5 pm on Monday. The Muslims had gathered at the residence of Isal a showroom owner, located directly opposite the under-construction mosque.

“We had just begun praying when the attacks started. They came in groups of 10 and attacked each house. Bricks and gas cylinders were thrown hurled inside the houses. They attacked us with baseball bats and sticks. We tried to escape by locking ourselves inside our homes. That was when they started dousing our homes with petrol and setting them on fire,” he said.

The Muslims alleged that the violence was planned and claimed that even Jats from nearby villages were called in to attack them. They alleged that police deliberately delayed taking action. The Jats, in turn, alleged that the violence was instigated by the Muslims and two houses, owned by Jats, were also burnt.

“Police have done nothing. Even 36 hours after the violence, they have not made a single arrest. They are giving time to those who have made us homeless to bury evidence and get away with it,” Sahil Ahmed, a protester, said.

IIT-Madras bans student group for criticising PM Modi, his policies

CHENNAI: In a controversial move, IIT-Madras has banned a discussion forum for students following an anonymous complaint that it tried to spread "hatred" against Prime Minister Modi by mobilizing SC/ST students to question government policies on the use of Hindi and the ban on cow slaughter.

The decision followed after the ministry of human resource development (MHRD) made an inquiry regarding the anonymous complaint it had received on the activities of the Ambedkar Periyar Student Circle (APSC) on the IIT campus. The complainant had enclosed one of APSC's pamphlets reproducing a speech which criticized the Modi government and its policies.

The 'controversial' pamphlet that the MHRD forwarded was the copy of a speech by a Dravidian University academic R Vivekandanda Gopal on the "Contemporary relevance of Dr Ambedkar". The event was organised by the APSC on the campus. The pamphlet reproduced portions in which the speaker had criticized the Modi regime for "pro-corporate" policies such as the Land Acquisition Bill and insurance and labour reforms. He had also accused the government of "communally polarizing" people by introducing a ban on cow slaughter and through ghar wapsi programs.

Following the ban, APSC can no longer use facilities on the campus including the auditoriums for its functions.

Monday’s attacks caught local Muslims by surprise.

About 400 Muslims of Atali village, who were attacked by a Hindu mob four days ago, continue to be stranded Friday in the compound of the Ballabgarh police station. Despite the sweltering heat and inadequate food and water, the displaced persons have refused to return to their homes, seeking the arrest of the attackers and compensation for their burnt houses.

"The cause of the confrontation, locals say, is a dispute over a 30-year-old mosque. In 2009 the Hindus of the village claimed that it was the property of the village Panchayat. The Muslims said the land belonged to the WAKF board. In March this year, the Faridabad court ruled in favour of the Muslim community. The Hindus however, continued to raise objections, with some advocating the demolition of the mosque because it stood adjacent to a temple." - The Hindu
.

The pattern of recent riots has been that Muslim houses are set on fire, Muslims run from their houses, and are never able to return, becoming refugees in their own land. Such arson and violence cannot occur without thugs from outside coming in to create mischief.

2 + 2 = 3 for these SSC, HSC evaluators

AHMEDABAD: What is 2 + 2? No, not four, but three if you go by Gujarat's gurus. Teachers, while evaluating answer papers of class X and XII, committed a plethora of simple addition mistakes that could have marred the fate of over 65,000 students.

With parents spending lakhs on their children's studies and students putting in all their effort into the board exams, these errors highlight the callous attitude of teachers.

The errors were spotted when the marks were totalled again while being fed into computers.

"It took us marathon sessions of re-counting in all answer-sheets to ensure that injustice was not done," said an official of Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board.

These errors crept in despite the answer-sheets passing through three sets of eyes before the final marks were arrived at. Generally, papers are evaluated by a teacher and are then passed to a senior teacher and finally to the moderator.

Officer on special duty of GSHSEB for class X, M M Pathan, said: "We took a long time to correct the errors. Since fates of students hung in balance, we went the extra mile. Had the teachers been more careful, this exercise would not have been needed."

Exam secretary of XII general stream G D Patel said: "We are quite surprised that teachers of secondary and higher secondary schools with top academic degrees have committed such basic mistakes."

The erring gurus who are paid for evaluation are never taken to task or penalized for such errors. This, said GSHSEB officials, is something that might need to change.

An aged man from Atali reduces entire village to tears

NB: One can only offer thanks to Shabbir Mulla and to his fellow villagers, Hindu and Muslim, for speaking to each other with honesty and friendship. This shows us once more, the lesson that Mahatma Gandhi died in order that we may remember: ahimsa is another name for love. Truth and love are the only medicine for communal hatred and violence: Dilip

Govt. and district administration fail to bring down the wall of hatred in Atali village in Ballabhgarh, Haryana; but with a few words, an aged Shabbir Mulla douses the fire, paves the way for the return of Muslims to their village

New Delhi: History is replete with examples of how in all incidents of communal violence, if there is politics at work on one hand, there is human empathy on the other. When violence gripped Atali village in Ballabhgarh district of Haryana recently forcing Muslims to flee their homes, here too both politics and human empathy were at work.

With both factors in evidence in Atali between May 25 and June 3, there arose the question of how to resolve the conflict, how to breach the hate barrier, how to facilitate the return of the violence-affected Muslims back to their homes. Several attempts were made but no solution seemed to be in sight. At last, Union minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Krishan Pal Gurjar, state education minister, Ram Vilas Sharma, Minister, PWD, Rao Ranvir, local MLA Tejpal Tanwar and other leaders brought people from both communities together at the Panchayat Bhavan at Ballabhgarh in the hope of finding some solution. The victims of the violence spoke their minds, narrating their woes in great detail. A lot was said from both sides; the ministers and the administration were hard put to find some way out of the impasse.

Among those attending the meeting was the aged Shabbir Mulla who sat in one corner, tears rolling down his cheeks as he listened quietly to all that was being said. When there seemed to be no solution in sight, gathering courage Shabbir Mulla stood up and said in a trembling voice: please grant me two minutes for I have something to say. As he spoke, he was heard with rapt attention. In a highly charged atmosphere, what could Mulla say in two minutes that could possibly show a way forward?

But as he spoke, each word that he uttered helped douse the fire of hatred. What’s more, what he said reduced all the Hindus present, ministers included, to tears. Many rushed to embrace him even before he had finished his say. This is what Mulla said: “Where can we go? Even at the time of Partition in 1947, people of our village would not let us leave. When Muslims elsewhere were fleeing to Pakistan, we were not allowed to leave. We were told that this is where we must continue to live. So where can we go now? If they wanted to kill us, they could have killed us then. Why would the village elders have guaranteed our safety, offered us protection? Now, we will live how they want us to live”.

Mulla’s words brought tears to every Hindu eye. The ministers and the village elders rushed to grab Mulla and hug him tight. “You have touched our hearts, shaken us, opened our eyes. Our Muslim brothers should feel free to live in the village in any way they please. You are free to build your mosque. Even if you send us to jail we’ll live together as brothers from now on."

The frail, aging Mulla broke the ice. As Hindus and Muslims embraced each other, the latter decided to return to their village. The ministers and the district administration gave them the assurance that the wall of the mosque which had been demolished will be rebuilt and all those who had suffered loss of property will be compensated. They also assured the Muslims that they would have the right to continue to pray in the mosque at the disputed place.

To earn for his family’s upkeep and to pay for the treatment of his ailing son, Shabbir Mulla, makes regular rounds of some 20 villages neighbouring Atali, selling cloth. Mulla has been engaged in this business for the past 30 years. The 9 days of conflict have cost him dear for he was unable to meet the orders customers had placed with him for weddings in their family.

Modi govt will go if it doesn't build Ram temple, VHP says

NEW DELHI: Although BJP president Amit Shah says that the Narendra Modi government doesn't have the mandate to address its core issues, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), a constituent of the Sangh Parivar, disagrees.

The VHP has said that the huge mandate with which the Modi government came to power was not only for development but also to delver on its core issues, including building a grand Ram temple at Ayodhya.

The Hindu outfit also reminded the government to be ready to "face the consequences" — like the previous NDA government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee — if it did not deliver on the core issues.

"The mandate which the BJP got in last general election was not merely for development. People expect that they will address the core issues too," VHP spokesman and national secretary Surendra Jain told IANS.

"Despite several comments on the issue by senior BJP leaders, our hope is still alive. We expect that this government will fulfill its commitment to construct a Ram temple at Ayodhya," he added.

Bharatiya Janata Party president Shah said last month that the party needs 370 seats in the Lok Sabha to address its core issues. Home minister Rajnath Singh said earlier that the core issues were not the government's priority for now as it was focussed on development.

Jain said building the Ram temple was also in the BJP manifesto. "How can they backtrack on the issue?" he asked.

Jain said the previous NDA government didn't address these issues, and the voters had shown them the door. "BJP leaders should learn from their mistakes of the past."

He said a committee of sadhus and spiritual leaders would soon meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to urge him to construct the Ram temple.

Recently, the Shiv Sena, another BJP ally, had said that the Prime Minister should reveal his "Mann Ki Baat" on the contentious issue of the temple in Ayodhya.

Rajya Sabha MP Vinay Katiyar, who was the face of the Ayodhya movement in the 1990s, has said that the government should resolve the issue through legislation or dialogue and not wait for the Supreme Court's verdict.

The Allahabad high court's verdict on the disputed Babri Masjid-Ram Janambhoomi issue is on appeal before the Supreme Court.

Adani, Reliance to build Bangladesh power plants to ease crisis

DHAKA: Two leading Indian power firms will build several plants in Bangladesh to produce up to 4,600 megawatts of electricity to ease the country's prolonged power crisis, a senior official said on Saturday.

Adani Power Limited of India and Reliance Power Limited of India signed separate memorandums of understanding with state-run Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) on Saturday, as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi began a two-day state visit.

"Reliance Power and BPDB today signed a MOU to develop four units of power plants to produce 3,000 MW of electricity with a cost of $3 billion," the company said in a statement. The plants will burn natural gas.

Adani Power will set up two, coal-fired plants with a total capacity of 1,600 MW that will cost more than $1.5 billion.

CBI Prohibited From Interrogating IB officers involved in Ishrat Jehan killing

The ultimate test of Narendra Modi lay in his commitment to justice in Gujarat. No case was as vital from the Muslim standpoint as the killing of Ishrat Jehan . The evidence was so strong that for years senior arrested Police officers could not get bail in that case. The name of Rajendra Kumar, a high IB officer and very close to Modi came up repeatedly. Finally, the Union Home Ministry declined the CBI request to question Rajendra Kumar and three other IB officers.

Why is the Modi Government stopping this investigation ? The answer lies in the prior consent of Modi himself to the killing

DETAILS OF THE CASE AND THE CONSPIRACY HATCHED BY MODI AND HIS HENCHMEN (POLICE OFFICERS).

Javed-Ishrat Encounter: Why is Rajinder Kumar still free?

3 of the most heinous offences defined in the Indian Penal Code are Abduction, Abduction for Murder and Murder itself. If one scrutinizes the evidence collected by CBI in the charge sheet they filed on July 3rd 2013 in the Javed-Ishrat fake encounter case, the 3000 pages are replete with credible evidence which make it abundantly clear that the master mind of this entire conspiracy is Shri Rajinder Kumar.

What is shocking however is that while his name is all over the charge sheets papers, his name is strangely missing from the list of accused. In atleast 6 sworn statements before the magistrate under the Section 164 of CrPC, police officers of the crime branch of Ahmedabad city tell the whole story of the involvement of the IB officials namely T Mittal, MK Sinha, Rajeev Wankhede led by their joint director Shri Rajinder Kumar.

Shri CJ Goswami, the then PSI has sworn that the involvement of the IB officers in abducting the so called terrorists started way back in April 2004 when one Shri Jeeshan was kept in a house in Gota Housing Board, Ahmedabad.

Shri CA Barot, the driver of Tarun Barot who was actually present at the Vasad toll naka on June 12 2004 and was a witness to the abduction of Javed and Ishrat and had in fact driven Tarun Barot back to Khodiyar farm on SG Highway near Vaishnodevi temple from Vasad. He has stated in his sworn statement that:

“At around 12:30-01:00 p.m. a blue Indica car was stopped by Shri Amin, Shri Barot and their policemen. One Shri MK Sinha of SIB had also come there with another person in his white Maruti 800 car. These officers had taken a girl and a man from the blue Indica car and put them in white Maruti 800 of Shri MK Sinha….”

Shri Kalubhai Desai who was at that time present in the Khodiyar farm had seen Javed and Ishrat being brought in the white Maruti 800 car and he has sworn in his 164 statement that Shri DG Vanzara, Shri Rajinder Kumar and Shri Vanzara had interrogated the suspects during his duty time.

Another PI Shri RI Patel has also sworn an affidavit, pointing out that he had seen Rajinder Kumar go to Arham Farm where another person, Amjad Ali, had been abducted and detained. After detaining him on 26th of May, NK Amin, DG Vanzara and Rajinder Kumar interrogated him (an euphimism for torture) till he couldn’t walk and co-erced him to agree that he had come from Pakistan in order to commit an offence in a crowded area of Ahmedabad. This became the basis for the first intelligence input of the Joint Director of IB Rajinder Kumar, communicated to the Police Commissioner on the 1st of June 2004.

And then comes the affidavit of DH Goswami who in no uncertain terms states that on 13.06.2004 when he and GL Singhal went to the crime branch office at Shahibaug he saw Vanzara, Rajinder Kumar and PP Pandey discussing the operation. In his presence Rajinder Kumar had asked DG Vanzara to talk to the chief minister. Mr Goswami further states that on 14.6.2004 when he had once again gone to the same shahibaug office at noon, Vanzara had told him that he already had the approval of the chief minister and the minister of home.Shri KM Vaghela, another PI, has given his statement before the CBI that he had also gone to the crime branch office at Shahibaug on 14th june at 11 p.m. and at that time he had gone into the chamber of Shri Vanzara to plead on behalf of Singhal to let Ishrat go, but Vanzara refused stating that everything had already been decided the day before with Shri PP Pandey and Shri Rajinder Kumar and that they had already gotten the green signal from kali dadhi and safed dadhi, referring to the code names they have for Shri Amit Shah and Shri Narendra Modi.

As if all these statements are not enough, Shri BA Patel unamibugously states that on 14.06.2004 morning Shri GL Singhal had asked him to go to the SIB office Bungalow no 31 Shahibaug. There Shri Rajinder Kumar had met Singhal and had handed over one AK 56 rifle, ammunitions, magazines, two pistols and its ammunition in a bag which was given to another policemen Nizamuddin Saiyed for handing it over to Tarun Barot at Khodiyar farm. If we piece together, all the above facts, it makes a whole story. Starting from intelligence inputs to the planting of weapons, it was all carried out by Rajinder Kumar. If we look at the standard of proof, the evidence collected under section 164 against Rajinder Kumar, it is sufficient to convict him from Murder, Abduction and Conspiracy, perhaps as the main accused. It is therefore a travesty of justice that he not only remains out but a large section of the bureaucracy and the security sector is desperately trying to save his skin.

Where Do Ram And Allah Live?

By Ram Puniyani

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made it a point to keep visiting temples when visiting other countries. His visit to Dhakeshwari Mandir and Ramkrishna Math in Bangla Desh were part of his itinerary (June 2015). On the heels of this he is planning to visit the oldest mosque in India. This happens to be Cheraman Jama Masjid in Thrissur in Kerala. Contrary to the present perception and propaganda that Islam came to India with Muslim kings with sword in one hand and Koran in the other, the initial Islam in India came via the Arab traders in Kerala to begin with. It is due to this that the first mosque in India came up in Kerala. Wikipedia gives the brief history of this mosque. There were trade relations between India and Arabia. Arabian trader used to come to Malabar Coast even before the advent of Islam. With the rise of Islam in Saudi Arabia, the traders brought this faith with them. “Cheraman Perumal, the Chera king, went to Arabia where he met the Prophet and embraced Islam and changed his name to Tajuddin. From there he had sent letters with Malik Ibn Dinar to his relatives in Kerala, asking them to be courteous to the latter. In the 7th Century, a group of Arabs led by Malik Bin Deenar and Malik bin Habib arrived in north Kerala and constructed a Masjid at Kodungalloor, naming it after their contemporary Cheraman Perumal.

This interesting peep in to the history; when the issues related to mosque, church and temple is very much in the air; should help us to delink religion from politics. Modi’s associates within BJP and with RSS family (Sakshi Maharaj and the like) have begun asserting that Ram Temple will be built soon at the site where Babri Mosque was demolished. As Modi led NDA Government came to power we witnessed a series of attacks on Churches in Delhi, which many tried to pass off as series of thefts, despite the fact that not much was stolen; only damages were there, religious symbols were desecrated. The trend continues. In Atali in Haryana the violence was unleashed and the half built mosque was destroyed. In Rajagir (Bihar) the issue of holy place is being raked up. Subramniam Swami of BJP is facing a court case for saying that Temple is a holy place but mosque is not a holy place.

The communal politics has been built around the issues related to identity. Even during freedom movement when the communal streams (Muslim League-Hindu Mahasabha-RSS) came up the issues related to pig in the mosque and beef in temple were made the pretext of violence. In Independent India the story begins with Ram Temple issue in the decade of 1980s when BJP made it a political issue. Its seeds were sown in 1949 when some miscreants installed Ram Lalla Idol in the mosque. The rest is history. The culmination of this has been that the Allahabad High Court gave the verdict on the ownership of land on the grounds of faith of majority community, and divided it into three parts. The judgment was a precedent of sorts as faith became the base of judgment. The matters are pending in Supreme Court but to keep the pot boiling VHP-BJP has started making noises for construction of temple.

There is a long trajectory of incidents related to mosque-temple-dargah. Disputes have been constructed around them systematically. In Karnataka the Baba Budan Giri dargah was claimed to be the Datta Peetham. In Hyderabad near Charminar, Bhgyalaxmi temple is gradually being extended to be dangerously close to the Charminar. In Madhya Pradesh Kamaal Maula Masjid in Dhar has been claimed to be Bhojshala. In most of these places the campaigns were launched and polarization around these was brought in leading to electoral benefit to BJP at most of the places.

Historically it is amusing to see that while kings had diverse policies towards the holy places, the communal historiography which became prevalent looked at Muslim kings as destroyers of temples. This irrespective of the fact the Kings were there to rule primarily for power and wealth, religion being incidental to their policies. Emperor Asoka was the only king who worked for spreading his religion, Buddhism. Kings also could not rule just on the strength of sword and had to respect the faith and feelings of their subjects. That’s how we see that Babar in his will to Humanyun writes “Son, this Nation Hindusthan has different Religions. Thank Allah for giving us this Kingdom. We should remove all the differences from our heart and do justice to each community according to its customs. Avoid cow-slaughter to win over the hearts of the people of this land and to incorporate the people in the matters of administration. Don’t damage the places of worship and temples, which fall in the boundaries of our rule. Evolve a method of ruling whereby all the people of the kingdom are happy with the King and the King is happy with the people.”

Tipu Sultan got the temple of Shrirangpatanam repaired after it was damaged due to the attack by Maratha armies. Primary cause of destruction of Somanth temple was the massive wealth kept there. Even Babri Mosque has been the pretext of biggest communal polarization in recent times. Hindu King Shivaji got a mosque built at the entrance of his fort in Raigadh. ## The clever British policy of introducing communal historiography and dividing the history into Hindu, Period, Muslim period and British period paid them rich dividends and the communal streams picked this version from their angles and this came in handy to incite the feelings of people.

Currently as India on one hand has claims for industrial growth and the figures of GDP are juggled to silence the critics, the fact is that India as a country is very low on the index of human development and per capita calorie consumption by large section is declining. At such a time the issues around temple and a mosque are a definite derailing of the priorities of the society. Lately many from RSS stable have been making damning statements about holy places. Yogi Adityanath of BJP said that non Hindus should not be permitted in Haridwar’s ghats. Somanth trust is barring the entry of non Hindus into the temple. Such attempts will be a great detriment to our social practices which have united the society. People from different religions keep visiting places of all the faiths. These are practices where people overcome the religious divides in practice. These will weaken the fraternity which is integral part of our values.

While watching the TV debates on Ayodhya temple-mosque issue, one can see VHP spokespersons beating their breast that Lord Ram has to live in the tent, while he deserves to live in the Bhavya (great) temple. Here is the question, contrary to the belief of communal forces; for most of the medieval saints; the place of worship was within one’s own heart and soul. The identity issues have been brought to the fore by communal forces for their own vested interests. What we need is not the issues related to identity but struggle for a society which wants to see that all its citizens have bare minimum facilities, food clothing, shelter, employment health and dignity.

Lord Ram and Allah are almighty and the mortals like us, including the breast beaters from communal formations, should prefer to see that the housing is provided to all the mortals, ordinary people so that they don’t have to live on the pavements-slums and suffer the ignominy. Can one hope that rather than presenting the past in a one sided; divisive manner we look at the story from all the angles, and put forth the rational one. We need to cultivate our faith for well being of all our society as a whole on the lines of Vasudhaiva Kutumbkam.

BJP Programme in Surat comes to abrupt end...Why????

She who BJP can't stomach- Modi wife at event, Party rushes to shut it

The BJP's unease with any visibility offered to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's wife Jashodaben appeared to be in evidence last week when the party engaged its big guns to shut down a social awareness event she was attending as a guest.

The retired schoolteacher, whom a teenaged Modi had left soon after their 1968 marriage, had arrived at the seven-day event in Surat organised by the NaMo Sena, a Modi fan club, on its second day on June 4.

Immediately, according to the organisers, Surat BJP president Pranesh Modi and two party MLAs summoned and arm-twisted them into ending the event straightaway, five days before its scheduled end.

Even BJP national president Amit Shah rapped the organisers over the phone, NaMo Sena founder and Sangh-VHP activist Sanjay Goswami told The Telegraph.

At Pranesh's office, the organisers "were threatened and pressured into ending the function",

"When we demanded to know the reason, the city BJP chief asked Pathak to talk to Amit Shah over the phone. Shah scolded Pathak and asked him to leave Surat at once. He left for his home in Saharanpur (Uttar Pradesh)."

After Modi left her, a teenaged Jashodaben had returned to her family home in Mehsana where she lives with her two brothers. She has never complained against her husband publicly, nor have political opponents been able to corner Modi over his treatment of his wife, but the BJP continues to be touchy about her.

Last November, when she told the media she was ready to live with her husband if he made the offer, Modi's elder brother Somabhai had ruled it out as "impossible" and expressed unhappiness that Jashodaben was speaking to the media and "attending functions".

Narendra Modi is a staunch RSS Pracharak and very few people know that RSS does not respect the Indian tricolour flag. They never celebrate Independence Day nor hoist the flag in their shakhas even on this day, one will also never come across any photograph showing any RSS leader saluting the national flag. They just fool the general public into believing that they are a patriotic organisation deeply concerned about the nation.
