521 "samuh" lagan in Mumbai: 521 Mass Weddings

The one and only free public forum for Bohras. The focus of this forum is the reform movement, the Dawoodi Bohra faith and, of course, the corrupt priesthood. But the discussion is in no way restricted to the Bohras alone.

The only article I found in the Times of India of Friday Sept 19, 2003 was on: "Dawoodi Bohra Muslims perform mass marriage."

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/cms. ... sid=189427

Can you post or scan the article "Beware Bohras" you are alluding to?

"Not everything was as hunkydory as it seemed, though. One woman, insisting on anonymity, spoke of how the community headquarters tried to coerce her aunt to have her daughter married along with the other couples, just to swell the numbers. Her insistence that her daughter wanted to finish her studies first was met with much disapproval. Clearly, this is a closely knit community in which firmans, even in personal matters such as marriage, studies and investment, are considered commandments. Beware those who break them."
The article above is copied and is the last paragraph from the article.
Ofcourse its wonderfull that so many can, and get married in a mass ceremony, as this becomes effordable to the majority of families, but the sad part is, there are always compultions and force , either by parents, community or organisers just to get the numbers right.(in this case 521, whatever significance that has?)

Significance of 521?

52 = Sayedna Muhammad Burhanuddin
1 = God

So, Sayedna before God.

These mass weddings bring to mind another cult. Below is an extract from on of teh Moonie websites:

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE 'REALLY'?
Power and Control. It is one thing to leave a cult when you realise that you were lied to and used to keep it's leader living in luxury, but quite another to depart your wife and children! And it will always be in your mind and heart that Moon himself is responsible for your wife and children. It is very difficult to separate these. So, of course, Moon has achieved tremendous control through the 'matching' of strangers for marriage. Aside from this are very obvious legal benefits. Moon has a very difficult time with immigration laws in various countries, and it is much easier to have a Japanese woman marry an American man to get her into the country so she can begin slaving for the false messiah.

.

Mass Marriages:

Compare Mass marriages organized by Syedana and Mata.

In one ceremony grooms were competing to out do each other by getting to Mosque on Horses, elephants or opulent carriages and Scottish Highland Band preceding them. (See the pictures). Muslims of all sect should follow sunnah of prophet and keep ceremony as simple as possible

Whatever be the aim of all these mass marriages(definitely not noble) , but it is not as bad as it looks. The number of jamans , hopefully get reduced & poor families most likely will get benefited .After all the salaam , I guess would definitely turn out to be cheaper than inviting 100-200 ppl .

Another thing to note Br Muslim First is-----------The Mata Amritanandamayi Math has decided to organise a mass marriage for couples unable to afford a proper wedding.

Also see: Everybody's Amma
It will provide each of the 108 couples items essential for a traditional wedding, including gold ornaments, a sari and flowers.
Our Syedna only gives DUAS after getting his hefty salam money!

The last paragraph of news in Times of India which I referred and which shows that some would-be brides and bridegrooms were forced to marry leaving aside their education and career plans just to get the figure of 521 has already been quoted here.
“Not everything was as hunkydory as it seemed, though.
One woman, insisting on anonymity, spoke of how THE COMMUNITY HEADQUARTERS TRIED TO COERCE aunt to have her daughter married along with the other couples, just TO SWELL THE NUMBERS. Her insistence that her daughter wanted to finish her studies first was met with much disapproval. Clearly, this is a closely-knit community in which firmans, even in personal matters such as marriage, studies and investment, are considered commandments.
BEWARE those who break them.”
Hat more a reporter who was called to cover the occasion can say about the sorry state of affairs in our community. Similar cases have been found in Udaipur (to get the figure of 786) and elsewhere. There are cases of divorce after such marriages and joining the Bohra Youth group at least in Udaipur which I know.

S. Insaf:
But you still have not responded to your original assertion(!) of posted 09-20-2003 07:43 AM that:

"Times of India, Friday, dated 19th Sept. 2003 Mumbai edition in which in the last para under the heading 'Beware Bohras'"

Is there a heading "Beware Bohras" or was it the so-called journalistic inadvertent embellishment?
