* Militants believe triangular snack 'resembles Christian Holy Trinity'

By Stewart Maclean

Somalia's al-Shabaab group has banned samosas after ruling the popular snacks are 'offensive' and too Christian.

Militant Islamist fighters last week used vehicles mounted with loudspeakers to announce the bizarre ruling across the regions of the war-torn country it controls.

HISTORY OF THE SAMOSA

The word 'samosa' derives from the Persian 'sanbosag'. It is referred to as 'sambusak' or a similar variation in most parts of the Arabic-speaking world.

The snack is thought to have originated in Central Asia before the 10th century and was introduced to the Indian subcontinent around 1300 by traders in the region.

Records from the 14th century describe a 'small pie stuffed with minced meat, almonds, pistachio, walnuts and spices', served before the third course.

The snack, popular in South Asia for centuries, then gained popularity when bought to India by Muslim traders and soldiers.

The crispy meat-filled samosa made today was then made around campfires and saved by travelers as snacks for long journeys.

The extremist army has taken command of several provinces of Somalia and is fighting the country's official government for total control.

However it has been widely criticised for its strict enforcement of Shariah law and unmerciful treatment of the population.

Resemblance: Islamic militants say samosas look like the Christian Holy Trinity

At the weekend the organisation sparked outrage after saying it would refuse to allow overseas aid agencies into drought-hit parts of Somalia.

The UN last week declared a famine in two parts of the country and warned millions face death from starvation.
Al-Shabaab had previously suggested it would allow foreign agencies to bring in vital food aid to prevent its people from dying.

But on Friday the group denied the famine even existed and accused Western governments of inventing the crisis as a propaganda tool.

The organisation also warned foreign agencies were still banned in the regions of Somalia it controlled.

Experts have warned the group's refusal to acknowledge the food crisis could cause millions of unnecessary deaths as people struggle to find food amid a devastating drought.

The reported ban on samosas is the latest in a string of bizarre rulings from the organisation, which has been likened to the Afghan Taliban.

Earlier this year the group introduced a blanket ban on the playing or watching of football.

It has also previously ordered men to grow beards and warned it will take action against anyone caught wearing tight-fitting clothes.

Not allowed: Samosas have been banned in many small towns near the Somali capital of Mogadishu

Somalia: the Real Causes of Famine

The mainstream media casually attributes the famine to a severe drought without examining the broader causes.

Both the UN and the Obama administration had accused Al Shahab of imposing "a ban on foreign aid agencies in its territories in 2009". What the reports do not mention, however, is that Harakat al-Shabaab al-Mujahideen (HSM) ("Movement of Striving Youth") is funded by Saudi Arabia and supported covertly by Western intelligence agencies.

The backing of Islamic militia by Western intelligence agencies is part of a broader historical pattern of covert support to Al Qaeda affiliated and jihadist organizations in a number of countries, including, more recently, Libya and Syria.

The broader question is: What outside forces triggered the destruction of the Somali State in the early 1990s?

The reality behind the 'natural disaster' in Somalia is altogether different than the Western media's portrayal of events in the Horn of Africa and extends back to the transformation of Somalia by the IMF into a 'failed state' in 1991.

"Far beneath the surface of the tragic drama of Somalia, four major U.S. oil companies are quietly sitting on a prospective fortune in exclusive concessions to explore and exploit tens of millions of acres of the Somali countryside.

"According to documents obtained by The Times, nearly two-thirds of Somalia was allocated to the American oil giants Conoco, Amoco, Chevron and Phillips in the final years before Somalia's pro-U.S. President Mohamed Siad Barre was overthrown and the nation plunged into chaos in January, 1991. -- 'Somalia: the Real Causes of Famine' by Michel Chossudovsky, 21 July 2011

The IMF-World Bank structural adjustment program (SAP) was imposed on sub-Saharan Africa. The recurrent famines of the 1980s and 1990s are in large part the consequence of IMF-World Bank "economic medicine". In Somalia, ten years of IMF economic medicine laid the foundations for the country's transition towards economic dislocation and social chaos.

ON tuesday I was attending a meeting of our toronto chapter of amnesty international. Plight of somalia came into discussion. A report by unicef and wfo was also discussed. well the drought is result of natural phenomenon. SAP is only applied to those economies, who borrow from IMF and are not able to pay back. To let them adjust their finances, some structural adjustment is suggested. IMF does not implement SAP arrangment, it is the subsequent government which applies. IMF does not have drones and F18s to force any Government to implement structural adjustment. Structural Adjustment is a voluntery suggestion, and it becomes not so voluntery, when receptive govt is willing to borrow more for their domestic consumption. SAP has nothing to do with drought.
It has become normal for islamists to find fault with everyone else but themselves. In the meeting we were told that uptill now 29000 children have already died, and if help is not allowed immediately millions will be at risk of dying. Similar but a bit less severe situation is in kenya. But over there there are humanitarian agencies working and people are getting help.

Al Shabab is an al qaeda affiliated group. I dont know if americans or westerners aided them or propped them. Even in that case blame lies on their shoulder for being american or western puppet. As they claim to be purist wahabis, and also aided by saudis and gulf arabs, shouldn't they be condemned for their own people's suffering.
it is an pen secret these groups are most brutal and unkind to thir own people. They have no compassion left. they are involved in all kinds of criminal activities including piracy in gulf of aden, gun running , kidnapping , killing people in the name of islam.

it is high time muslims should stop blaming every body else for their own moral and physical decay. Muslims are most corrupt and immoral people. They take it granted that if they are performing some ritualistic worshipping then every immorality or corruption is allowed.

Indian muslims blame hindus for their backwardness and ignorance. But hindus did not deter them to get educated. They do not show loyalty to their country. they are all for their rights but donot want to take responsibility. It is in our best intrest to alienate groups like al shabab and such groups, so that sufferings of normal people can end.
Muslims should also realize that they are no more than 20% of world, and islam should learn to live with all other religions and stop claiming religious hegemony over others.

The starvation caused by the drought is a natural occurrence in Africa. Interference of foreign parties has intensified the problem in that Horn of Africa. According to the UNICEF, the Somalian crisis this time is due to a combination of conflict and crop failure and the worst drought in the last 60 years.

The regions of the Horn of Africa has long suffered and in situations of prolonged conflicts. In 1884, Europe agreed to do the occupation, colonization, invasion and annexation of Africa. The British, French and Italians claimed the territories in the State now known as Somalia. For 40 years, the British controlled the northern Somalia for its access to the Red Sea. Italy had invaded southern Somalia. While France controlled the neighbor, Djibouti.

After having been overridden by conflicts, actually since 2006 it begins to enjoy stability. At that time, the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) took over Mogadishu and several areas in the south of the country. The UIC succeeded in defeating the tribal warlords who for many years have been doing mischief. After so many years without law, the UIC managed to bring peace.

However this is not favored by the United States of America. This country then used Ethiopia, to brutally attack Somalia to eliminate the Supreme Islamic Courts Council (SICC). As a consequence, more than 1 million people evacuated to stay away from areas of conflict. The American war by using its right hand state - Ethiopia - against the UIC has worsened the African crisis.

The West seemed reluctant to give serious aid to Somalia. Unlike other countries whose natural wealth are lucrative such as Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Afghanistan, etc. The West has spent trillions of dollars to wage a war and killed thousands of civilians. In Somalia, the West tends to ignore, although compared to the cost of war, this famine could be eradicated with a cost that is much less. It is not the first time the world is seeing pictures of emaciated babies in Africa! In the years 1991-1992 , hundreds of thousands of Somalis also experienced starvation.

Responses from the wealthy Muslim governments are not much better. Muslim rulers who are puppets of the West are not so concerned, preferring to spend the wealth they have plundered on non-essential things. Qatar spends $ 430 millions to buy those American works of art within six years. Qatar also gives unlimited credits to American banks during the global financial crisis!

When children perish from malnutrition, Muslim rulers are too busy buying bankrupt American banks, buying beautiful villas or European football clubs. Sheikh Mansour buys Manchester City for £500m, Sulaiman Al Fahim acquires Portsmout for £60 million, Prince Faisal bin Fahd bin Abdullah from the Saudi intends to by Liverpool for a price in the range of £200 to 350 million!

The famine in East Africa is a problem for the entire Islamic Ummah in the world. The solution to this problem lies with the governments.
