The beautiful facade of the 259-bed Saifee Hospital with 33 speciality departments faces the sea and promises affordable medical care to all without discrimination

The Rs. 150-crore Saifee Hospital was opened on June 4 by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The Hospital with ultra-modern facilities is located opposite the Charni Road railway station on Western Railway in Mumbai

The beautiful façade of the 259-bed hospital with 33 speciality departments faces the sea and is considered an impressive addition to the Mumbai skyline. The view of the sea is available from the maximum number of rooms in the hospital which would have 22 free beds. Only one of the 14 floors of the hospital will be deluxe in facilities. Fatimid architecture adorns its walls, glasses and floor area.

The Trust has been clear that the hospital is there to address the needs of all including the elite. It promises affordable medical care facilities to all without discrimination. The whole edifice, including the general ward is fully air-conditioned. It has installed the latest CT, MRI, gamma cameras and other diagnosis equipment, has the latest technology such as xenon lights in its operating theatres and a fitness equipment that is unavailable anywhere else in India. It even has WHO standard treated water that is available throughout the hospital and rain-water harvesting and solar power panels in consonance with environmental concerns. Information about inmates is available at all points in the hospital merely at the touch of a button. It also provides Alternative Medicine including acupuncture, homeopathy, yoga, naturopathy, Unani and Ayurvedic medicine as part of its medical repertoire.

The hospital is expected to be staffed by 700 medical and support personnel, including 27 managers, 180 nurses, 40 skilled technicians and over 100 security and engineering staff when fully operational.

Saifee Hospital is named after former spiritual leader of the Bohra community, Syedna Taher Saifuddin, who led the community from 1915 to 1965. The construction of the hospital started in 2001 after several cases pertaining to the site were settled and was personally guided by the present Syedna, Dr. Mohd. Burhanuddin. Earlier here stood a sanatorium in the early part of the 20th century.

The construction of the hospital complex was funded entirely by Syedna and the Dawoodi Bohra community.

Nearly 700 guests including the Prime MInister Manmohan Singh, HRD Minister Arjun Singh, Maharastra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, several film stars including Dilip Kumar and Dharmendra, Dipti Mayor of Karachi Tariq Hassan, a senator from US, Consular Staff of foreign missions in Mumbai, several governors attended the inaugural ceremony.

Just happen to be at charni road today and visited Saifee Hospital. It hasnt started functioning yet since they cant manage to get a sufficient number of doctors. All the good doctors prefer to work with Leelavati hospital where they get better remuneration and more exposure . For now, the hospital is serving the purpose of public toilet for street dogs. I spotted many of them spraying the courtyard of the hospital with their hind leg lifted. Surprisingly there were no guards to shoo them away. As a gratitude to Aqua Maula for providing them such a luxurious toilet, the dogs must learn to howl together GHANU JEEVO GHANU JEEVO... ;)

PS: The structure of the hospital is massive but lacks symmetry. It looks very irregular. This would escapes the eyes of hoi polloi but anyone with a basic knowledge of architecture spots the flaws at first sight.

I am sure this is a welcomed and much needed project in India. I for one like the architecture as well. However, it bothers me that the medical staff appears to be an afterthought. How can a hospital be inaugurated without a medical staff ?

Until recently I assumed that it commenced operations after the ceremony. Mumin Mukhlis do you know the qualifications of the medical staff being targeted and when they will come on board (or do you even care) ?

Tahir,
I think you must have seen the inuagration of Saifee Hospital on TV. But you failed to see the video of making of Saifee Hospital in that there is a message from Dr. Desai.
At that time i think you must be doing like all the dogs do with three legs on ground ...... :D
First of all see all the videos and then ask for any proof.

Saifee Hospital- An unfavorable Report by The Editor of Seerat Urdu weekly
The Editor of Urdu weekly Seerat from Mumbai, Moinuddin Shaikh Ajmeri according to front-page news in his paper Seerat dated 4th August 2005 has reported the pathetic condition prevailing in Saifee Hospital in the beginning itself.
The verbatim translation of his report is as under:
"The Indian Prime Minister Mr. Manmohan Singh inaugurated the Saifee Hospital on 4th June 2005. Wide publicity was done. The bombastic speeches were made in the presence of Bohra High Priest Sayedna Burhanuddin Saheb.
Saifee Hospital was to become a milestone in the services of humanity but it did not happened.
The work in the hospital started on 26th July . So I visited the Saifee Hospital on 29th July. But I was shocked to see that only some ordinary work in O.P.D. had started. And in one corner a pathology dept. on a small scale was opened.
When I talked to Prakash and Mrs. Nayyar in the reception they were very rough in their talk. When I showed them my press-card they took me to one person who also talked to me in most impolite and disgraceful tone. Then they took me to one decent-looking elderly person. When I showed him my press card and inquired about non-functioning of the hospital, he became very upset and angry and advised me to go Badri Mahal. When I argued that the hospital is here so why should I go to Badri Mahal? Take me to some responsible person of the hospital. But there was no one.
Sayedna Saheb had already done the official inauguration of the Saifee Hospital in the month of Ramadan (November 2004) but (since no one gave any notice or importance to it), it was again publicly inaugurated on 4th June (so that the presence of Prime Minister can catch media’s attention.). Though 8 months have passed after official inauguration and two months have passed after public inauguration there is no trace of any patient or doctor in Saifee Hospital. The same is condition in Saifee Diagnostic Center in Bhindi Bazar. I request Sayedna Burhanuddin Saheb to keep some sensible responsible person in Saifee Hospital who at least can talk in a professional manner."
There a hospital behid Saifee Hospital known as Hinduja Hospital. It learnt that the staff, the machinaries and equiptments were brought from this hospital to Saifee hospital to show it to the public that Saifee hospital is already functioning.
