SURAT: The toll is mounting in flood ravaged Surat as hospitals, mortuaries, cremation and burial grounds get a steady trickle of human bodies from the still submerged areas which have remained under water since Monday.

By some estimates, about 200 people may have lost their lives in the worst-ever floods to hit any part of Gujarat.

At least 18 bodies buried under the rubble of the five-storeyed Rabiya Manzil in Rander that collapsed on Thursday were recovered.

The civil hospital alone had received 69 bodies of victims of flood related incidents, according to hospital superintendent MK Wadel.

At the new civil hospital post-mortem room, 15 rotting bodies were brought on Friday evening by volunteers of Ekta Trust.

"I have seen at least 48 bodies in the last 24 hours," said Dr Imran Mulla of Ekta Trust. "I am afraid that this is just the beginning with more bodies likely to surface as the water recedes further," Mulla added.

Most of the bodies are from the worst-hit areas like Kader Shah ni Nal, Khwajadana Dargah, Sagar Hotel, Navapura and Maan Darwaza.

Residents said apart from those who were drowned or swept away, casualties were also caused by the absence of timely medication for four days.

People kept the bodies of their near and dear ones in their flooded homes and are now bringing them to the mortuaries.

Government officials privately said in low-lying areas next to Tapi, which were immersed under 20 feet water; it is possible that slum-dwellers may have been swept away into the sea.

Floating corpses, badly decomposed by now, are being recovered by fire brigade personnel. Meanwhile, four persons, including three women, were killed when a rescue boat capsized in Nizar taluka on the border with Maharashtra on Friday.

The death of three people due to drowning on Tuesday was also reported on Friday from Magdalla village.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday announced an additional Rs 350 crore for Surat from the National Calamity Relief fund, taking the total Central assistance to Rs 500 crore.

He also announced Rs one lakh compensation for families of those who had lost their lives in the floods in Surat

Anybody who claims that one cannot do 10% of task of another person is out of his mind. One gets trained to perform certain job and shoud do it to best of his ability. AqM Saheb was trained to be AqM from get go. I would love to be a religious leader. This job is goood one espicially when 'Murids' are convinced that I am in direct contect with the hidden one and poor fellas buy it hook,line, and sinker. Whatever he does it is a good business.

Brainwashing and plundering is a rather tough task. My conscience won't allow me to do 1% of it even if I am showered with zyafats, salams and rida clad nymphets lined up to smooch my thighs.

Before I sign out, I'll let you into a secret. Actually, the old man is too dumb to do the job anywhere near perfection. It is the deputy hawks who are running the show while they lullaby the old man into sleep lest he goofs up things.
