This Good Samaritan begs to donate
Palanpur: It is difficult to believe that a beggar can do this. Yet it is true. For the third year in succession, Khimji Prajapati has donated a large part of alms collected by him to buy uniforms for a dozen poor girl students of Government Primary School II in Mehsana.
He spent a major portion of his savings of Rs 3,000 collected while begging to buy these uniforms. "I know the pain of these children," he said when asked about his gift to the poor children.
It was a sight on Monday as shabby looking Prajapati limped through the school gates on crutches to give away the school uniforms to the poorest of the children, six of whom come from Muslim families, four are orphans and two are children of street vendors. "Rich philanthropists are a common sight. Some are pretentious. But this is the first time I have ever seen a beggar who has shared his alms with the poor girls," school principal Suraksha Naik said. She said the school authorities generally do not insist on uniforms as this leads to children not coming to school.
The girls who got the uniforms were too happy to express their feelings. Poonam, a student of class VII, could hardly mumble her thanks to the good Samaritan, who looked like a character out of fairy tales. Same was the case with others.
Prajapati goes daily to Hanuman temple at Modhera Chowkdi, Sai Baba temple and Jain temple of Simandhar Swami to collect alms.
